02:55I saw that pass that chase made on hunter, and I could tell, oh, as hunter gets around
03:00him on the inside, I could tell that hunter really didn't like the pass by chase.

03:11It's going to be a big battle at least for second.

03:18About a lap and a half, the stuff is taking place with sexton.

03:32To me, that tells me he's not comfortable on that high speed part of the racetrack.

03:51That particular part, right past the mechanics, is really high speed.

03:58If you're not comfortable on the lean, you're not going to push it.

04:07This half of the track is great for the number four.

04:12The bike is not moving at so much high speed.
04:15I think, for sure, on those higher parts of the racetrack, higher speeds, he's a lot
04:19quicker.
04:20He's going to have to pick that up.
04:21He lost a lot of time to hunter lawrence and jeff in that spot.

04:59Based on the body of work we've seen from jeff lawrence so far, what I'm seeing in his
05:02riding right now is a very conservative mindset.
05:05Of course, he's in the lead, leading the race, so he has to have a certain amount of speed

05:11He's definitely managing things more than he was in the first moto as hunter lawrence
05:14makes the pass.
05:15Maybe not aggressive enough.

06:25Yeah, maybe his shoulders bother him a lot more than he led on.

06:30He said he felt pretty comfortable in that first moto, so, yeah, a lot of track conditions
06:34and change.
06:35But this race is still 23 minutes left.

07:13The rider that this helps more watching jeff lawrence get his pass is chase sexton.
07:18I think this maybe gives him confidence because now hunter lawrence is in front of him.

07:24Sometimes in these motos when it's a hard day like this, all the lack to exit from just
07:29doing the hard work and how hard it is to ride this racetrack, sometimes your legs and
07:33your body just doesn't respond in the beginning part of the race, so I know I've been there
07:38to work.
07:39I almost feel really lethargic out there riding a motorcycle, and that's hard to believe,
07:44but it looks like jeff lawrence is in that stage, and it takes you a few laps for the
07:47body to kind of wake up, and then you'll start pushing it forward.
07:51Maybe it's more of that than anything else, and let's see if he can start closing that
07:55gap back down on his brother once his body wakes up from it.
07:58So you think he might actually, even though he looks tired now, could potentially get
08:02stronger as the race goes on.
08:05It's just something about, you know, what happens to the body after the first moto.
08:10This racetrack is super hard.
08:11They've been standing up all day long, and just the acid and all the energy it takes
08:17for the body to finish these motos, sometimes you come out in the next one, and your body
08:21just doesn't respond, and if you have hunter lawrence, chase sexton, those guys are attacking
08:25you.
08:26The best thing you can do is almost let them go by because you're not ready to go at that
08:30pace, warm up, and then attack them again, and maybe that's what we're starting to see
08:34with jeff lawrence as this race goes on.
08:37We'll find out here pretty quickly.
08:38Yeah, we were talking yesterday about that burn in the legs when you're standing up on
08:42this sand.
08:43Let's go back to adamsene cerullo.
08:46And with jeff laboring out there a little bit right now, this opens up a great opportunity
08:50for chase sexton to get around him, and just from a confidence perspective, james, just
08:55from a mental perspective, it makes such a big difference if you can just straight
08:59up pass a guy.
09:00Whether he has a little injury or whatever it is, if you can get past a guy mentally
09:05for the rest of this championship, this is a huge moment right now.
09:09Yeah, absolutely.
09:11But you look at chase's body position, to me it doesn't look like a rider that's ready
09:15to move forward.
09:16Kind of what we were saying about jeff lawrence.
09:19It looked like chase came out firing, and then I don't know what happened, but now you
09:24can look at his body position, he's really, you know, kind of, I wouldn't say laboring,
09:29but he doesn't have any attack to move forward compared to what he had that first lap, and
09:34you saw him overjump that double after that finish line jump.
09:38So I don't know if he hurt something or maybe he's just feeling the conditions of southwick,
09:42but he definitely doesn't have a rider that's, okay, jeff lawrence is in front of him and
09:45attacking that same position he had that first lap.
09:48Yeah, you're not seeing it from sexton either right now, yeah.
09:51You can tell by his body position, he's not in attack mode.
09:54He looks like a mode of, like, I want to just finish this moto, and it could be the bike
09:59maybe is uncomfortable, maybe overjumped something, or maybe just as all these guys are, they're
10:04a little bit tired and you just don't want to push that much.

10:08And we always talk about bike setup.
10:11We're always talking about testing, chasing settings and all this stuff, but what happens
10:15when you do that?
10:16What happens when you're constantly changing the motorcycle as chase sexton has been very
10:21vocal of this year, you're riding a different bike every week, so there's different characteristics.
10:26You're not necessarily used to it.
10:28Sometimes it's better to just stay on something that you're a little bit uncomfortable on,
10:32but it's predictable, and maybe that's some of what's happening.
10:35He's gone out there, and now he's very focused on what he doesn't like with the bike.
10:43Final race of the day, the WIC 338, and guess who just woke up?
10:49Hunter Lawrence in the blue got the drop on his brother, Jett, but it looks like Jett's
10:54putting it back together, James Stewart.
10:56To me it looks like now the legs are starting to fire, and he's back on, I mean, a lot of
11:00these guys, they try to stay calm, and sometimes, like, the beginning part of the race is the
11:04hardest part, no matter who you are, Jett Lawrence, James Stewart, Ricky Carmichael,
11:08that hard part to be able to dump the throttle off that gate is difficult, especially when
11:13you have a guy like Hunter Lawrence and Chase Exton going after you, J.T.
11:16I wonder if it was just a situation where Jett didn't feel comfortable, he knew his
11:20lines weren't very good because these guys were all over him in those early laps, so
11:24he just checked up, let Hunter by, followed him around for a minute until he found his
11:27flow because he just looks like a different rider.
11:30Maybe not the rider from the first moto, but his intensity is better, and it looks like
11:34he's refound some confidence he didn't have two laps ago.
11:37I'm curious of the lap times.
11:38They were all at 216 the previous lap.
11:40Now as they come across, let's see.
11:44All in the 217s.
11:45Now, all within a second, though, Sexton and Plessig are hanging in there, but it looks
11:49like Jett is ready to attack.
11:51I think at most places, J.T.'s right, and I think Jett did do that a little bit, but
11:57I also think the reason why I'm, like, maybe a little hesitant that it was more about him
12:01just firing was because Chase Sexton was right there, and if Chase Sexton wasn't as close,
12:07I think he would be content to hang around his brother, but you allow Hunter to get around
12:11you.
12:12Chase Sexton might come up and pass you.
12:13It just, I don't know if that ends well for you, but now they're starting to wake up a
12:18little bit.
12:19He's pushing his brother, and they're starting to separate themselves from Chase Sexton,
12:22and I don't think Jett Lawrence is going to follow his older brother just because here
12:25at Southwick, as I mentioned, vision is a big thing, and you can make a mistake just
12:29because you can't see.
12:30And we do have some rain coming down, so how does that affect the vision?
12:34Well, it affects it, and especially with the sand now, usually sometimes the sand hits
12:38it and it falls off, but when it's wet, it hits you and it sticks, and not only, one,
12:42you run out of tear-outs, but even with roll-offs, now you've got to worry about that happening,
12:46and they're getting stuck, and then the roll-off's not working.
12:49So as soon as I say that, Jett Lawrence falls back, Chase Sexton's closing back in.
12:54Aaron Plessinger's right behind him, too, so this race is far from over.
12:57Does it just depend on what section of the track we're in for Sexton?
13:01He starts closing right back up, and he's done it again.
13:05Any parts where the track slows down, it seems like Chase Sexton's a little bit more comfortable,
13:10and he might just be patient.
13:11Maybe he's trying to ride this thing and just be there for the end, now that Jett's not
13:15getting away.
13:17From weeks past, it seems like Chase has been the stronger rider.
13:20He's been able to close in on Jett, so for him, maybe he's thinking, well, he's right
13:24in front of me, I'm going to get to halfway, and then try to attack him, and maybe that'll
13:28work, almost like it did a couple weeks ago.
13:31Now it's going to open back up, fast section here.
13:42And Hunter's pulled away a bit, also.
13:43Yeah, and a part of that, Jett likes to he doesn't want to be too close to Hunter and
13:47these tighter parts because of what I was mentioning with vision.
13:51As you can see, the rain's coming down quite a bit more on that side of the racetrack than
13:54it is over here.

14:23Back to the leader, Hunter Lawrence, looking for the overall win and trying to stretch
14:27that points lead.
14:33Going to be interesting, can Hunter hold on and deliver an overall win?
14:51Chase Sexton back to the rear wheel of Jett Lawrence.
14:54What do you see in trackside?
14:56I'm anxious to see what chase Sexton's pressure does to Jett Lawrence's disposition out there.
15:03Is he going to use, when chase gets close to him, is he going to go after Hunter?
15:07Is he going to use that to spur him on?
15:10Right now it looks like he's kind of content.
15:12He's just out of the roost, right behind Hunter, just out of the roost, but as chase comes
15:17up on him, we'll see how bad he really wants to win this thing because I have a feeling
15:22he'll start going after Hunter when he really feels that pressure from chase.
15:25Yeah, absolutely.
15:27I think with that, out of all the riders, I feel like Jett Lawrence, he doesn't want
15:32chase Sexton to have any kind of confidence.
15:34We saw what happened a few weeks ago when chase gets the confidence.
15:37He can come from 40th to first.
15:39So with Jett following his brother and being content there, I don't think he would be doing
15:43this on purpose if he felt like he had more pace and he could run with Hunter Lawrence.
15:48I think Hunter's riding strong and maybe Jett's not feeling as good, but as soon as
15:51we say that, you see that gap pull out and it really just comes down to a mistake here
15:55and there, but this is where Jett likes to stretch it out.
15:59I like this outside line.
16:00It seems like it's a lot easier for him and he keeps his momentum up and you can see the
16:04distance that he's lost.
16:05Chase Sexton, that is, lost to Jett in that one section.
16:09Back to J.T.
16:10I'm just going to throw another theory because I've thrown everything else against the wall.
16:13It seems like every time he pulls up to Hunter, he tries to make a move and then he can't
16:17see.
16:18He gets roosted and he's got to fall back.
16:20So I'm wondering now if he's just going to wait and wait and wait and make another run
16:23at it.
16:24Try to get him all at once.
16:25As you said, with the rain and the sticky sand, you just can't sit behind him.
16:29You won't be able to see after two laps and then your race is really done.
16:35Here's Christian, the mechanic for Jett.
16:37Yeah, I mean, by Christian's expression right there, I mean, it looks like even he knows
16:44rider to push.
16:45Like, you know, hey, if he felt comfortable, if this was all part of the plan, I think
16:49he'd be calm just throwing the lap times out there.
16:51But he's telling Jett to dig in there and keep pushing.
16:53So maybe there's a little bit more maybe with the shoulder or he doesn't feel good that
16:57he knows his rider pretty well to know that, yeah, something's not off.
17:01But as soon as I say that, they're pulling away from chase.
17:04So maybe he's going to worry about, you know, his older brother at the end of the race as
17:08long as that number four stays away from him.
17:10And Ferrandez has made the move on Cooper now.
17:12Up to fifth.
17:13We told the story of moto one, Ferrandez saying yesterday, they've had some engine troubles.
17:18They've been down on power the first couple of rounds.
17:20This is the first time this phoenix racing team has raced 450 motocross full time.
17:26Thought they'd be better after the weekend off.
17:29Definitely has been today.
17:31Hunter Lawrence in the top box, that is your leader.
17:34He's actually not won one of these races overall.
17:36He's had the point lead for a while now but has not gotten an overall win but he's in
17:40position to do it now.
17:42But we have been mystified the way this race has gone.
17:46Every half a lap, it seems like the plot changes.
17:50Is hunter going to be able to bring this home?
17:52He looks pretty good to me.
17:54This is where sitting down, you notice he's sitting down a little bit more.
17:58So if jet's legs are a little bit tired and hunter, because he sits down and that's his
18:03normal riding style, it probably helps him and he feels a little bit more comfortable
18:06doing that.
18:07Probably has a little bit more energy.
18:08But both of these guys look really good.
18:10I think hunter has a pretty strong pace.
18:13Obviously he's out front.
18:14They're pulling away from chase Sexton.
18:16Might be a battle down to the brothers as it's been the last few weeks.
18:19Anything to me, it looks like hunter is starting to pour it on here.
18:22That was impressive.
18:23Yeah, that was a nice slip that bike in there.
18:25Sometimes here at southwick, a mistake, you can turn that into actually a speed gain.
18:29You just let that thing ride out.
18:32He looks comfortable to me.
18:33Doesn't look like he's laboring at all.
18:35The bike looks pretty good.
18:36It's moving around a lot.
18:37But looks like he's flowing with it.
18:39Now he's starting to tow younger brother along as well.
18:43That inside.
18:44Do you think he's helping jet move forward or is he pulling away?
18:48He's got it up to three seconds now.
18:49He was three tenths quicker than jet last time around, jt.
18:54I think hunter is sensing a little bit of weakness here.
18:57These guys, they manage their energy and they'll kind of save up for when the timing
19:02is right.
19:03They're so intuitive.
19:04They're instinctual in what's happening.
19:05If he senses that jet can't really go with him, he will absolutely try to sprint and
19:10try to what they would say in cycling, they would try to break jet here where jet's not
19:14thinking about the win anymore.
19:15If he can put in his best laps, build that lead out to five, six, seven seconds, that
19:19will absolutely change the way that jet is thinking about this second moto.
19:25One thing I can say for hunter is as a rookie in the 450 class, at the start of the year,
19:31you're happy with podiums.
19:33You're happy with top fives but as he makes a big mistake here, getting a little wide
19:36in that turn, you're happy with those finishes.
19:39But as it gets later in the year, he's been building momentum.
19:43He clearly has the ability to be on the podium and even win consistently.
19:48So all of a sudden, he's not so content sitting behind jet anymore.
19:51He wants to win one of these things and I don't think he's going to let this one go
19:54easy.
19:56It's not going to be easy.
19:57Jet closing back in after that mistake.
20:01So hunter Lawrence on the 96 looking for his first ever overall win in pro moto cross as
20:07a 450 racer.
20:08Last year's 250 champion.
20:11But his brother jet, last year's 450 champ is starting to close back in.
20:16Yeah, he's starting to close in and hunter made a big mistake which allowed jet back
20:21in there.
20:22If you watch some of these roller sections, some of these big breaking bumps, watch these
20:26guys sit down.
20:27They're almost sit down in these bumps and start bunny hopping and it allows them to
20:31keep the front end up but also picks the rear end up.
20:35So we were talking as this day goes on, these bumps you allow to just hit you in the butt
20:41makes you stand up.
20:42Now it seems like jet Lawrence is starting to find his flow and maybe wants to get around
20:45his brother.

20:59As soon as hunter had that three second lead, that one mistake, he allowed jet to close

21:08Now he sees it and he's going to try to attack his brother but here hunter has been quick
21:12all day long.
21:13Especially the second moto.
21:14He's a lot faster than anybody on the racetrack in this section and he's pulling away from
21:19jet again.
21:20Passed both sexton and jet Lawrence in that area.
21:27Use it to pull back away.
21:28Jet goes back to work on him.

21:38Hunter almost tossed it down.

21:41to the inside and both wheels slid from underneath him.

21:55As a rider you're sitting there watching like, okay, I got him now.

21:59But just as soon as he makes one, you make one as well.

23:49And it's, like, I think he's got to pick and choose what he can do, especially on a track
23:53like this.

23:55And so getting the rhythm and having a good flow is always important, especially here.
23:59And I think hunter just lost it a little bit there.
24:01He lost the lead.
24:02So good battle for the lead with both our boys.
24:04But hard to know who to cheer for.
24:06But I'd like to see hunter get one.

28:24Hopefully, he continues to do that.
28:25But he knew he needs to be in front of jt.

28:30Has anything, he's going to try to attack him again, just like he did a couple weeks

28:34Just like he did a moment ago.
28:35But chase sexton might be rolling away from him.
28:38Did we just see a school in energy management from sexton who waited and then poured it

28:50Something that he gave that spurge of energy right before the finish line, held chase off.
28:54But as they came right before the mechanics area, he sat up and backed out of it.
28:58I just think he understands his body is not going to let him push here and he's not going
29:01to try to throw this championship away trying to push too hard to battle chase here.

29:07When you see these guys come in after the motos, how strong sexton looks even at the
29:12end of a tough day.
29:13Yeah, and I'm on record saying I think chase is the fittest rider in the class right now.
29:17So for him just hanging in there, getting late in the moto with a chance is his best
29:22strategy and we saw that at high point and then he crashed right when he got jet where
29:26he wanted him.
29:27He's got to avoid that same mistake here, but I don't think there's any doubt about
29:30who the fittest rider in the 450 class is at this very moment.
29:34Yeah, I agree with jt.
29:36But the one thing chase did this moto is that he was very patient because southwick,
29:42no matter how strong you are, you can't just ride 30 minutes hard out.
29:46Just because you show up here and you're in better shape doesn't mean you're going to
29:48win.
29:49What we saw chase sexton is realize that, look, I might be the fittest guy, but I got
29:54to save some energy and be the fittest guy towards the end of the race and hopefully
29:57those guys are not too far gone and I can run it down and that's what you're seeing.
30:01So for me, I love the strategy.
30:04It was looking a little grim there for a little bit, but with jt kind of laboring and
30:09hunter lawrence getting out of the pace, chase sexton played this thing to the fullest.
30:13What he has to do is not repeat what he did last weekend or a couple weekends ago.
30:17I would take a look back, realize I got five seconds and now manage this race just like
30:22those other guys do when they're out front.
30:24He just ran a 2.16.5.
30:27Jet ran a 2.24.
30:31Eight seconds faster and he's only a half a second off of his best lap from early in
30:38the moto when the track was smoother and you would assume he was fresher.
30:42There's anderson who was down early off the start about to go a lap down.
30:48Best moto win for chase, that beautiful 1-1 last to first ride at hang town and he has
30:54rebuilt it here.

30:58Now he's got to get around cullen park, the lap rider doing him no favors, but here's

31:03When you're up to park, he probably is only realizing now, oh, wait, that's the leader.
31:08That's not someone I'm battling.
31:10He's battling with anderson for 22nd place.
31:12I know cullen, they're friends, too.

31:19Just like chase sexton.
31:20To me, this is just as impressive as that 40th to first.
31:23The way he's doing it and the way he managed this race.
31:26He played it out.
31:27He knew he had to have a plan going into this race and he knew he just couldn't go out there
31:31and just outrace those guys.
31:34He showed up.
31:35He is the fittest and almost ten seconds the last lap.
31:38I'm going to throw another one at you.
31:40Of all the races last year that sexton was in, this was probably the weakest against
31:44jett.
31:45He had moments in almost every moto last year where he matched him, maybe caught him.
31:49We did not see that at this track last year.
31:52This is a huge step.

31:55Chase sexton, I was actually kind of positive, happy for him and feeling pretty confident
32:01after that first moto when he said, look, I just got to ride better.
32:04He didn't say it was the motorcycle.
32:06To me, it looked like, okay, he knows he's just got to ride better, have a better plan
32:11that the motorcycle is there today to be able to do it.

32:14Last year was the only race when chase sexton came back in this series against jett lawrence.
32:19Jett lawrence was able to pull away from him towards the end of the race.
32:23Every other moto, chase sexton would close him in.
32:25That's what I said.
32:26Look, you got to have a plan here at southwick and chase sexton realized that and was able
32:30to execute that.
32:31He's got three laps or two laps left to pull this off.
32:35The battle for the overall isn't over because jett lawrence looked back once chase sexton
32:40passed him and was looking back at his brother.
32:42Now you got to see hunter lawrence and if hunter lawrence gets around him, that gives
32:47chase sexton the overall victory.
32:49He's going for it right now.
32:52There's hunter in the blue jersey trying to catch back up to jett and, okay, let's try
32:58to do the math here.
32:59We would then be looking at a 2.2 for hunter.
33:03A 1.3 for jett and a 3.1 would get the overall win for sexton.
33:10Jett's weakest part of the racetrack, I would say, is right there in that mechanics area.
33:14If hunter lawrence is close to him, just what he saw with chase sexton, I think he would
33:18be able to ride around him on the outside.
33:20To me, the reason jett isn't going that fast there is because his shoulder is bothering
33:24him.
33:25It's all strength.
33:27If you don't feel comfortable doing that, you're not going to go fast there and hunter
33:30has a chance if he's close.
33:32The wind has really picked up out here.
33:35We had some rain in this moto.
33:37Southwick throwing everything at these riders as this racetrack usually does.

34:18Go up against a wall and sit there for 30 minutes and let me throw sand on your face

34:23Oh, by the way, you have to carry this 250-pound motorcycle as well.

34:30That's why I'm impressed.
34:31That's why this racetrack is like none other.
34:35Was that the last flurry that hunter had in him?
34:37He's dealing with lap traffic now.
34:40Jett has pulled back away.

34:44Yeah, the only way hunter is going to come back on jett, if jett makes another mistake,

34:50Once jett got through to his lap riders and you saw jett stand up and kind of push, he
34:55jumped a little bit farther where chase was able to pass him.
34:58He knew hunter lawrence was coming and he wanted to get that gap and now it's about
35:01three seconds, jason.
35:02So this would be the end of the brief moto win streak by his standards.
35:06Four moto wins in a row.
35:07It should be enough for the overall.
35:11He'd have a 1, 2.
35:12He'd still get the overall win.
35:14There are the moto positions and event points.
35:16That's your overall on the left side.
35:18He would beat sexton for the overall but this still.
35:20To go out there and pass both lawrence's and southwick, that's something from sexton even
35:25if it's not the overall win.

35:28If you finish like this, they're going to be within three points.
35:30We have top three within three points of the championship leader and all of them feel like
35:35they got a chance.
35:36I think with chase sexton, even though he's going to be tied with jett, it was important
35:40for him to beat jett like he did this moto.
35:43If he can wrap this off, I think moving forward, chase will really feel like he can beat him.

35:51He was able to pass him multiple times last time out at high point then crashed.
35:56This time he makes the move and he's a half a lap away from finishing the job.

36:02Jett doesn't have to beat him for the overall.
36:04This was the thing that sexton couldn't do last year.
36:07He would get to him over and over.
36:09He couldn't make the passes.
36:10He couldn't seal the deal.

36:15He's been fastest like he was the last few motos.
36:19To me, this race is different.
36:21It's even different than the one he won in hang town.
36:25The reason that is because jett lawrence was out front.
36:28Chase sexton dropped back.
36:30He came up and he passed him.
36:31Not only did he pass him and chase him, he dominated him on the toughest track, on the
36:36roughest track of the year.
36:38Jett just dominated the first moto.
36:41There's no excuses.
36:42Chase sexton came to this gate, this second moto and just laid wood to these guys.
36:46Moving forward, now he has that I beat jett lawrence straight up and I dominated him when
36:52I did.
36:53I don't think he's been able to say that his whole time since he's been with jett lawrence.
