00:00And we're back here in Pinoy M.D.
00:02We'll continue our story about Makabuluhan when it comes to health.
00:06And speaking of Makabuluhan, we really need to know,
00:10isn't it, Dr. Q?
00:11Heart patients say, we should know our numbers.
00:13They say, when our blood pressure is high,
00:16what do you mean by high?
00:18What is that number?
00:20And what is low?
00:21And of course, when it comes to uric acid, it's the same.
00:24Usually, Connie, even us, the two of us,
00:27we depend on symptoms.
00:29For example, if you have a headache, you'll be asked to check your blood pressure.
00:32You'll say, I have a headache because I'm tired.
00:35But we forget that a headache is a symptom of high blood pressure.
00:42So you need to get your blood pressure.
00:44Like with our joint pains,
00:46oh, maybe I have a high uric acid.
00:49Oh my God, so you don't go to the lab anymore.
00:51But the degree of high uric acid
00:56is a need for a person to take medicine.
00:59So here it is, let's not wait any longer.
01:01So that we can all be guided to this very important topic,
01:05let's watch.
01:10What is this? Does it have arthritis?
01:13Oh my, I don't want this.
01:14My stomach hurts.
01:18Oh, does it affect your stomach?
01:20Oh, here it is.
01:21Does it have a headache?
01:24Intestines and fatty foods are not allowed to be eaten.
01:29But if you feel something in your body,
01:31or if you're a little older,
01:33you know what to do.
01:35Take care of yourself first.
01:38These are some of the foods that increase uric acid and blood pressure.
01:43To avoid hyperuricemia, or high uric acid,
01:46and high blood pressure,
01:48it's important to understand what these are,
01:51and what the normal range of our body is.
01:55Let's start with uric acid.
01:57Uric acid comes from what we call purines,
02:00or crystals that form in our body.
02:04Purines come from the intestines,
02:06some seafood,
02:07and meat.
02:09If purines are excessively present in our body,
02:11and our bones are not healed,
02:13our uric acid levels increase.
02:16Based on studies,
02:18they found that 29% to 30% are mostly men,
02:23and 18% are women who have not had menopause.
02:29After menopause,
02:30the number of women with high uric acid usually increases.
02:36This is what Catherine experienced a year ago,
02:39when she was pregnant,
02:40and she had pain in her arms and legs.
02:43It was as if your whole body was squeezed,
02:46and the pain was so intense.
02:49And when you stand up, you can't move.
02:53I couldn't move much,
02:56because when you move, it really hurts.
03:01And when you have to move slowly,
03:04it really hurts.
03:08When she went to see a doctor,
03:09she found out that she had high uric acid.
03:13She regularly took medicine prescribed by the doctor,
03:15but when she admitted it,
03:16she stopped taking it
03:17when her feelings improved.
03:22This was the only time in March
03:23that her symptoms returned.
03:28Catherine, 54 years old,
03:30had menopause in 2017.
03:36Aside from being in labor,
03:38Lucila believes that
03:39fatigue and stress are also bad for her.
03:42My head hurts,
03:44and my stomach hurts.
03:46And when I rest for a while,
03:48it goes away.
03:51Although she feels something,
03:53Lucila doesn't regularly monitor her blood pressure.
03:56When I took my blood,
03:57it was 140 over 90.
04:00I was breathing when I found out
04:02that my blood pressure went up,
04:04because I was tired.
04:06She only takes a break
04:08and drinks pineapple juice
04:10when she's sick.
04:13But why do we have high blood pressure?
04:16Every time the heart pumps blood,
04:18the blood has pressure
04:19in the large roots of the body.
04:21When there's a bullet in the blood vessel,
04:23we need a stronger force
04:25for the blood to flow to our body.
04:28The result is high blood pressure.
04:31The normal blood pressure
04:32is 120 over 80 millimeters of mercury,
04:35or 120 over 80.
04:38It is considered stage 1 hypertensive
04:40when the BP is already at 130 over 80.
04:45It should be taken care of
04:46so that it doesn't spread.
04:49All people 18 years old and above
04:52should know their blood pressure.
04:54Let's go from 130 over 80
04:56to 139 over 89.
04:59Those patients have a chance
05:01to develop high blood pressure.
05:03So if your BP range is like that,
05:07you should do a lifestyle modification.
05:10If you're fat, you need to lose weight.
05:13If you eat salty food,
05:15you need to eat less salty food.
05:18Then exercise.
05:21Getting a high blood pressure level
05:23shouldn't be easy.
05:25If they're going to get their BP at home,
05:28they should get it in the morning when they wake up.
05:30They should be able to breathe.
05:34For example, if they come from outside,
05:36they should be able to breathe for 15 minutes.
05:40It should be monitored 1 to 2 times a year.
05:44At the moment,
05:45Lucila's blood pressure is at 110 over 80.
05:49It means that her BP is normal.
05:51Replacing a diet
05:53and having enough rest
05:55may help to lower her BP.
05:59The blood uric acid test
06:01can be done in a laboratory.
06:04There is no recommendation
06:06on when to do it.
06:07If you have asymptomatic hyperuricemia,
06:09you can usually see it
06:11if you have comorbid conditions.
06:14The risk factors.
06:15If you're obese or hypertensive.
06:18If you drink alcohol
06:20or if you have a chronic renal disease.
06:23Usually, that's where they get the uric acid levels.
06:27But once you're asymptomatic,
06:29they usually monitor it every time.
06:33To find out the amount of her uric acid,
06:36she followed the blood.
06:39The normal amount of uric acid for women
06:42is 2.5 to 7.5 mg per deciliter.
06:46For men, it's 4 to 8.5.
06:51Catherine's uric acid level is 5.4 mg per deciliter.
06:55That means it's normal.
06:57But it should still be monitored
06:59especially if she has symptoms.
07:02Their uric acid levels fluctuate.
07:04It also depends on what they eat,
07:06what they drink,
07:08and if they exercise.
07:10Drinking a lot of water is good
07:12because as we said,
07:14you'll release the uric acid from the urethra.
07:18It's also good if you exercise.
07:22To maintain your blood pressure and uric acid levels
07:25in the normal range,
07:26you need to avoid certain foods.
07:28These include fat, salty, and high purine content.
07:33But more than avoiding the prohibited foods,
07:35you should follow a healthy lifestyle
07:37to enjoy life more.
