Still no Education chief, says Marcos  President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on June 29, 2023 says he has yet to choose who will be the next head of the Department of Education (DepEd), admitting, "it is harder than I thought because we absolutely have to get it right." The President said he would announce by the end of the week the replacement of Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio as DepEd chief. 00:00Well, no, it turns out it's harder than I thought because we have to absolutely get it right. So I'm giving myself more time.

00:09So what makes it very hard for you?

00:12As I told you before, we have to see really what the DepEd needs. Of course, there are many calls for the new secretary to be an educator.

00:26There are many calls for the new secretary to be an administrator. There are new calls to be a historical professor. All of these.

00:37They're all valid concerns. That's what education is all about. And that is why. And I've gone through so many CVs. Marami tayong magagaling.

00:50It's the one, we have to choose somebody who has an understanding of what is important in terms of being an educator.

01:00But then we also have to find the same person also has to have those qualities that they can galvanize this very, very large bureaucracy, which is the DepEd,

01:12to achieve all of those gains or all of those changes to make the educational standard better.

01:23Ang lagi naman natin tinitignan ang mga test score natin. We have to bring up the test scores. We all know that.

01:29So you need an educator who understands how to help the students, how to help the teachers. Number one.

01:37So there are many people who understand that who are experts really in the educational sector. But then how do you achieve that?

01:45That requires a very good hand on the tiller of the DepEd who can manage it properly, who understands the bureaucracy, who understands how to use the budget properly.

01:57All of these things. May hirap ang trabaho ng DepEd. Kaya I can. That's why we have to thank Inday Sara for really the effort that she put in.

02:11There's a great deal more work to be done and we'll find the right person to do it.

02:20I'm not going to let you tie me down to anything. We're looking at everyone. We don't make a shortlist.

02:31Every time I know people myself na sa palagay ko kaya niring trabaho, many people come to me and say, why don't you think about this fellow? Why don't you think about this maestra? Why don't you think?

02:46So we look at them.

02:48Ipig sabihin niya, Mr. President, may hirap ang pumili. May hirap ang pumili. Gusto mo niring mindi?

02:52Sa madaling sabi, oo. Nayirapan akong pumili dahil napaka-komplikado ng trabaho ng DepEd.
