00:00Surprise everyone and welcome to a new episode of Surprise Guest with Pia R. Cangheng.
00:06And we are expecting none other than one giant surprise today.
00:10Because we don't know our guest, we don't know who we'll be joining us today.
00:15But we'll be receiving clues to find out who he is.
00:19Our first clue is that he's a voice dubber.
00:22Yes, I don't think I've ever met a voice dubber.
00:25Unless we've already met, but we don't know that he's a dubber.
00:29Former politician. This is hard. What is this? Local? National?
00:33He's a stroke survivor.
00:36Oh, okay. That's something we can talk about.
00:39He's also a host.
00:41Wait, let's think about it. Voice dubber, former politician, stroke survivor, host.
00:48Brother of the nation. OMG! There can be no other person other than Kuya Kim.
00:54Is that you, Kuya Kim?
00:56Yes! Kuya Kim, I had a hard time with the clues.
01:01Okay, so we always meet, but with the clues given, I wasn't able to guess.
01:04I was thrown off by the voice dubber, Kuya Kim.
01:07Voice dubber? That was my first job ever, Pia.
01:10Really?
01:11Yeah, my very first break in ABS-CBN was not an on-cam talent.
01:15I was a voice dubber. I was the voice of Ultraman and Magma Man.
01:19Oh, wow! Tell us about your voice dubbing.
01:22I started out on television in the 80s, around 1989.
01:26I wanted so badly Pia to be on-cam.
01:29But, Kuya Kim is not ugly, not handsome either, just right.
01:33We had no place on television back then.
01:35Back then, TV was perfect, right?
01:38So, my first break was, I was a voice dubber for Maskman.
01:43Maskman first.
01:44Channel 5, and then we moved to Channel 13.
01:46So, I went on as a voice dubber for a few years,
01:50up until there was a break for my voice talent group in ABS-CBN.
01:53ABS just opened then.
01:55ABS-CBN opened in 1986, 1987.
01:58This was in 1989, two years pa lang.
02:00And, this was a live anime show called Ultraman.
02:04So, that was my voice.
02:05I was Ultraman and multiple other characters.
02:07Then, after one season of Ultraman, there was Magma Man naman.
02:11Live anime shows from Japan became popular.
02:13And, that was my first break in ABS-CBN.
02:16Then, I got into politics for a while.
02:19Actually, 12 years.
02:20By God's grace, I was back on television in 2004.
02:23And, it's been 20 years since that day.
02:26Wow!
02:26Kuya Kim, I never knew.
02:28I always thought that, you know, your television career started when you were doing on-cam.
02:32Mas maaga pa pala nag-umpisa yung TV career mo.
02:35And, as a voice dubber, how cool is that?
02:38Eh, hindi ka ba nahirapan?
02:39I mean, it's hard kasi, as it is, kapag on-cam, di ba?
02:42It's hard enough to convey emotion.
02:44Eh, lalo na siguro kapag boses lang ang ginagamit na hindi ka naman nakikita.
02:48Actually, Pia, being a voice talent, it takes a lot of subtleties and there's a lot of nuances to it.
02:53A lot of people think that being a voice talent on television is the same as being a radio talent.
02:59Magkaibayan e.
03:00Kasi on radio, you have to exaggerate your voice and you have to exaggerate your emotions.
03:04Because there's no video support.
03:05Alam mo, kinakailangan, sumugun tayo!
03:08Ganun, O-A. Medyo O-A.
03:09Sa TV, as voice talent, yung mga radio talent, nahirapan mo to adjust.
03:13Kasi medyo O-A sila.
03:15Because on television, since there's video support, the voice should be commensurate to the emotion on video.
03:21Hindi pwedeng O-A.
03:22Kung subtle yung muka no TV, no acting, ilangang subtle din yung boses.
03:27Pagka radio kasi, walang muka eh.
03:28So talagang dapat adjust.
03:30O-A talaga.
03:31Nasasaktan ako ng ton-ton-ton.
03:33Tapabasag!
03:35Ganun, medyo O-A.
03:36Hindi pwede sa TV, O-A yung labas.
03:39So alam mo kung sinong mga radio talent na nagvo-voice,
03:42at yung mga talagang tunay na voice talent na pa-TV.
03:45Kuya Kim, so pag nag-VVO ka,
03:48pag nagda-dub ka for TV,
03:50so like wale, si Maskman, ganyan.
03:52Habang nagda-dub, nakikita mo na yung images.
03:55Yes. Alam mo, Pia, during our time,
03:57this was in the 80s and early 90s,
03:59it was so—it took a lot of skill to be a voice talent.
04:03Mainly kasi because hindi to digital nun.
04:05Wala pang numero.
04:06Mano-mano ang editing nun.
04:09Ito yung tape, hindi pareho ko yun.
04:10In the same way, when you dub for television,
04:12we use visual cues and not numbers.
04:15Ibig sabihin yan, bagong buksan yung bibig,
04:17kailangan naka-ready ka na,
04:18pang—pang—when you dub,
04:21na pang sinusunan mo yung bibig,
04:22you're always a step late.
04:24Kaso, Chinese movies.
04:26May Chinese movies, talatang-talatang dubbed sila?
04:28Oo.
04:28You can use the mouth.
04:30Because number one, Chinese naman is not the language,
04:32so medyo off yung pagka-dub.
04:33Nagiging comedy tunoy.
04:35Ang voice dubbing ng panahon na yun,
04:36you use visual cues.
04:37Kunyari, two seconds before bumukas yung bibig,
04:40itigin ka na ron sa video.
04:42Meron bang dahon na nahuhulog doon sa pulo?
04:44Bumukas mo na kaunti yung pintuan.
04:46Kanyari, and then you use that cue
04:48to know that in two seconds,
04:49bumukas yung bibig.
04:51So you're on time all the time.
04:52You don't use the mouth to dub.
04:54That takes a lot of skill.
04:54And number two,
04:55yung pagbabasa ng script mo, ano,
04:57kunyari, script yan.
04:58Kung yung script, isyadong wala niyo sa TV,
05:00and you read it like this.
05:01Yung time traveled ng mata mo,
05:02from the script to the screen,
05:05that's a split second.
05:05Then you lose it.
05:07Dapat yung script, ililinyo mo doon sa camera,
05:09malapit na malapit yung linya,
05:11ilalagay mo sa mismong paragraph.
05:12So yung eye level mo doon sa camera
05:15at doon sa script,
05:16halos bang kanina,
05:17walang split second lost.
05:18Mga skills na ganyan,
05:20na hindi na alam ng mga dubbers ngayon.
05:22Ngayon kasi, they're numbers, eh.
05:23And hindi lang yan,
05:24may audio sync pa ngayon.
05:26You can be not in sync,
05:27yet the editor can sync you.
05:29Ah, it's easier, oo.
05:31Nung panahon namin, kunyari,
05:32there are four characters in one scene.
05:34You're as weak as the weakest link.
05:35So ginahanggalingan namin lahat
05:36para makauwi kaming lahat.
05:38Kasi ikaw yung pinakamabagal doon sa apat,
05:40you'll delay everyone,
05:41kainislam ka.
05:42So mabilisan,
05:43kailangan magaling lahat.
05:44Pag ganoon, Kuya Kim,
05:45always from the top.
05:46Kailangan, kumari may magkamali sa gitna,
05:48you go back to the top.
05:49Yes, nung panahon namin.
05:51Kung magkamali,
05:52back to the top.
05:52Naku, kainislam ka lang yung mga kasama mo.
05:55Grabe pala yung pressure noon.
05:57But Kuya Kim,
05:58now that I think about it,
05:59actually, I've always thought this,
06:01that your voice on TV is very distinct.
06:03So now that I think about it,
06:04it's really not surprising
06:05that you were a voice dubber before.
06:07Do you remember the last time you dubbed?
06:09Was it before you started on cam?
06:11Oh my gosh.
06:12The last time I dubbed professionally
06:14was Magmaman.
06:15That was in 1991.
06:17Anong story ni Magmaman?
06:19Inaap eh.
06:20Tapos yung inaap eh,
06:21pupunta sa robot.
06:22Tapos yung robot will save humanity.
06:25But it's the same.
06:26Kung naman yung storyline.
06:28Yung Maskman,
06:29lima kami eh.
06:29Palaging lima.
06:30There's something about five.
06:31Well, there's five.
06:32Our rangers.
06:33Our rangers, lima palagi.
06:35Like a magical superhero number for Japanese.
06:38So kami eh,
06:38ordinary people kami,
06:40parang Batman,
06:41and then someone's in trouble,
06:42merong monster,
06:43palagi may monster.
06:44Merong monster nilubas
06:45galing sa dagat,
06:46threatening to end the world.
06:47Matatawagan kami,
06:48lalabas yung lima.
06:49Nagkoconvert kami at some time.
06:51Ordinary civil-minded citizens
06:53to superheroes.
06:54Krabi Kuya,
06:55so how many years were you doing this?
06:57Maskman, Magmaman?
06:58I was doing it from 1988
07:01to 1994,
07:021995.
07:03Mababa rin?
07:041995.
07:05Yeah.
07:05Because 1995,
07:06I shifted to politics.
07:08I got into politics.
07:09Pero Kuya Kim,
07:09at one point ba,
07:10halimbawa,
07:11mag-order ka sa telepono
07:14or kaya may kausap ka,
07:15sabihin na,
07:16parang kilala ko yung boses mo.
07:18Kaya ba Pia,
07:19nakakatawa eh.
07:20Because my voice is nice.
07:22Kailangan eh,
07:22kinokopia nga palagi ng maraming tao eh.
07:24Alam nila na Kuya Kim yun.
07:25Hindi naman siya.
07:26The reason why I got into voice acting,
07:28Pia,
07:29was because I was so passionate
07:31about being an on-cam talent.
07:33Alam mo nung college tayo,
07:34to be a commercial model
07:35was a real status symbol.
07:37We all looked up
07:39in UP
07:40to the commercial models.
07:42Kilala namin yan.
07:43Uy,
07:44si Janel Barreto,
07:45sa Palm Polid yan.
07:46Uy, si ano,
07:47kilala namin yan.
07:48Uy, si Pia Arcamiel.
07:50Ganun yun.
07:51And I wanted so badly to be sikat.
07:54Lahat ng mga TV commercials,
07:56diba may mga boozy yan.
07:57Lahat ng mga auditions,
07:59pinupuntahan ko yan.
08:00Hindi ako matanggap-tanggap.
08:01Talagang,
08:01hindi ako matanggap on-cam.
08:03Up until one time,
08:04the producer,
08:05his name's Noel Malionga.
08:06He's also a voice dubber.
08:07Sabi ni Noel,
08:08You know,
08:09Kim,
08:10Mr. Kim,
08:11your voice is very distinct.
08:13Sabi niya din ganito,
08:14your hands are very distinct
08:15and very,
08:16maganda yung kamay bumalak eh.
08:17And then your voice is very distinct.
08:19I'd like to audition you
08:20for a hand commercial.
08:21Hand commercial.
08:22Gusto ko face commercial eh.
08:24And,
08:24a voice commercial.
08:26Subukan natin,
08:26baka Jen ka mag-excel.
08:27And true enough,
08:28my first audition
08:29for
08:30voice,
08:30hindi,
08:31voice talent,
08:32nakuha ka agad.
08:33This was for
08:34Beer na Beer.
08:35Oh!
08:36I was the very first voice
08:37of Beer na Beer.
08:38They were launching
08:39Beer na Beer then.
08:40I was also the first voice
08:41of the first commercial
08:43for Miller's Cigarette.
08:44Nakakatawa,
08:44puro sin products nga eh.
08:46And then,
08:47I went on
08:48doing voice commercials.
08:50And then,
08:50as a voice talent also,
08:52you get to audition
08:53to mga dubbing projects eh.
08:54So, samay yan.
08:55Isang grupo lang kami niya.
08:57A grupo ni Noel Malionga.
08:58Noel, by the way,
08:59is the voice of Big Bird
09:01in the original Voltes 5.
09:02Oh!
09:03Back close to the original
09:04Voltes 5 cast.
09:05And then, si
09:06Steve Armstrong,
09:07I think,
09:07was si
09:08Tomanyo.
09:09So, ayan.
09:09Puro mga dating mga
09:10Voltes 5 voice talents yan.
09:12But, Noel
09:13was my dubbing supervisor.
09:14And he was the one
09:15who brought me
09:16to ABS-CVL.
09:17Siya yung
09:17dubbing supervisor
09:18ng Magmaman at Ultraman.
09:20I started na on my TV career
09:22of a bit frustrated
09:23because I couldn't be on cam.
09:24Puro buwag,
09:25puro boses lang.
09:26I told my dubbing supervisor,
09:27Noel,
09:27pero naman ABS-CVN.
09:29Inagay naman yung mga
09:30pangalan namin sa credits
09:31para alam na kami yun.
09:32Ay, dati ba wala?
09:34Wala.
09:35Hanggang ngayon, wala.
09:37And you know what's funny ba, Pia?
09:38Our rate then,
09:39a senior,
09:40I was already a senior
09:41dubber.
09:42My rate then,
09:43which is a thousand pesos
09:44per episode,
09:45is still the same rate
09:47that they're getting now.
09:48Wow!
09:49Walang inflation
09:51sa kanila.
09:53One thousand pa rin sila.
09:54One thousand kami noon.
09:56This was in 2019 siya.
09:57Kuya Kim,
09:58when you were doing that,
09:59that was your main gig.
10:00Malaki yun, Pia.
10:01Oo.
10:02I was earning,
10:03for all my voice gigs,
10:05commercials,
10:06and my anime,
10:08I was earning more than
10:08ten thousand pesos sa mga.
10:10And this was in college.
10:11So I felt so wealthy.
10:13Parang,
10:14ang yaman ko nun, ta.
10:15Nagilibya ko palagi.
10:17I had gasoline for my
10:18beat-up car
10:19that got stolen, by the way.
10:21And then,
10:21I felt so rich.
10:22Ang yaman-yaman ko, ten thousand.
10:24Salap siguro maging kaibigan
10:25ni Kuya Kim noong time na yon.
10:27Laging nalilibra ng lunch.
10:29Libra pa gasolina.
10:31Malate palagi.
10:32Kasi Malate was the party central
10:33din eh.
10:34I remember all the bubbers
10:35and all the theater actors,
10:37my friends,
10:38would all hang out
10:39pagkawing weekend,
10:40Wednesday,
10:41Saturday,
10:42Friday and Saturday,
10:43sa Penguin Cafe in Malate.
10:45And Penguin was the epicenter
10:47of for those who were
10:48deep into the arts,
10:50music,
10:51photography.
10:52Ayun ako, I remember Penguin.
10:54That was my second home.
10:55And voice talents and bubbers.
10:57I met all my artistic friends,
10:59all my artist friends,
11:01in that little cafe in Malate.
11:02Penguin.
11:03Inabot mo, eh, Pia?
11:04Parang hindi na, Kuya Kim.
11:05Pero naabutan ko na
11:06nagpa-party pa sa Malate.
11:10But, Kuya Kim,
11:11parang,
11:12now that I,
11:13you know,
11:13now I begin to really see
11:14how strong the
11:16artistic side of you is.
11:18Was your course in college
11:19related to the arts?
11:20I took a film
11:21about generational communications.
11:22Okay, okay.
11:23Initially,
11:24not to be a director,
11:25not to be a producer,
11:26not to be a TV writer.
11:28I wanted to be a TV star.
11:30Back in the 80s,
11:31I already wanted to be a TV star.
11:34But Pia, my penguin was Agamot.
11:35In the 80s kasi,
11:36you had to be Attenborough.
11:37You had to be Richard Gomez.
11:39You had to be perfectly symmetrical.
11:41You had to be handsome.
11:42You had to be sweet.
11:43Ako, as I said,
11:44sakto lang ako.
11:45Parang ako si,
11:45si Egan.
11:47Parang ako si Mike Antiques.
11:48Taka level kami yan.
11:51Nadamay sila.
11:53Sakto level kami si.
11:54Hindi kami Adam Bulak,
11:55hindi kami Richard Gomez.
11:56Sakto lang.
11:57Walang lugar sa sakto lang
11:58during that time.
12:00Kaya nga,
12:00ang laki ng utang-ulog ko
12:02kay Buma,
12:03ang laki ng utang-ulog ko
12:04kay Egan,
12:05kasi they paid the way
12:06for the sakto lang people like me
12:08who have a career on television.
12:10It's a whole new genre pala, no?
12:12The sakto lang genre.
12:13Yeah, yeah.
12:14Tipong yan.
12:15For Egan,
12:16before Buma,
12:18Richard Gomez.
12:20Alam mo,
12:20katawa nga eh
12:21because in my mind,
12:23I was so focused to be like
12:24Adam Bulak and Richard Gomez.
12:25Yun pala,
12:26ang plano sakin ni Lord iba.
12:29He did not want me,
12:30the Lord did not want me to be
12:31Richard Gomez or Adam Bulak.
12:33He wanted me to be like
12:34Ernie Barod.
12:35So wala pala sa mukha yan.
12:37Yun pala,
12:38mire-reserve ni Lord sakin
12:39to be the new Ernie Barod,
12:41to be like the walking encyclopedia,
12:43the TV genius.
12:45Never in my wildest dreams
12:46did I think
12:47that I was going to be that.
12:49And I've been that for the past.
12:50It's my 20th year
12:51of television this year.
12:52Wow.
12:53Happy anniversary,
12:54Kuya Kim.
12:54Kupos.
12:55Yeah.
12:55Thank you.
12:56But imagine that.
12:57So,
12:58you know,
12:58bata ka palang,
12:58eto na yung gusto mo.
12:59And then,
13:00you just took a short break
13:01when you did politics.
13:02Because I remember
13:03you were a counselor,
13:03di ba,
13:04Kuya Kim?
13:05So,
13:05how many years?
13:06So when I first met you,
13:07I think you were covering
13:08City Hall,
13:09you were covering Malate,
13:10nalaga ka panood.
13:11But I remember,
13:12yeah,
13:12it was 12 years
13:13that I spent in politics.
13:15Three years as barangay chairman
13:16in San Andres,
13:17and then nine years
13:18as a city councilor of Manila,
13:201995 up to 2004.
13:22Did your parents,
13:24did your family
13:25have a hard time
13:25convincing you
13:26to give politics a try?
13:27No,
13:28well,
13:28no.
13:28Because,
13:29it was a bit,
13:30this is my dad's,
13:31my dad's pitch to me.
13:33Sabi niya,
13:33Kim,
13:33di ba you like television so much?
13:35Sabi niya,
13:35yeah,
13:35dad,
13:36I really want a career on TV.
13:37Alam,
13:38us politicians,
13:38I'm always on TV,
13:39watch me.
13:40I'm on TV.
13:41He was,
13:41he was vice mayor then.
13:43Watch me,
13:43I'm on TV tonight.
13:44Oh,
13:44look,
13:44I'm always in the news.
13:46But the,
13:46the satisfaction's the same.
13:48You get television as well.
13:50At the same time,
13:51you have a break,
13:52big break in politics
13:53because of your family.
13:55Give it a try,
13:55give it a chance.
13:56Sayang naman,
13:56baka pang politika ko eh.
13:58I was very good with people.
13:59I still am very good with people.
14:00Gamitin mo yung people skills mo.
14:02Mamamig ka ng tao.
14:03Binibigyan.
14:04So I gave it a chance
14:05because nga,
14:05dad is dad.
14:07And then the first term
14:08as city councilor
14:10was quite fulfilling.
14:11I was quite fulfilled
14:12the first term.
14:13But the second term,
14:14the fulfillment was not as much.
14:16The third term,
14:17I was so unhappy na.
14:19I knew it was not for me.
14:20And I knew that I was in it
14:22for the wrong reasons.
14:23I was not in it
14:24for genuine 100% public service.
14:28I was in it partly for public service,
14:30but in most part,
14:31in a bigger part,
14:32a service to my dad
14:34because I love my dad so much.
14:35I wanted someone to replace him,
14:38someone to watch his back,
14:40someone to support him.
14:42So I was a politician
14:44for dad and my family
14:45first and foremost.
14:46And secondly lang,
14:47pangalawa lang in public service.
14:49And that will not drive you to succeed.
14:51That will not drive you to
14:53to be passionate about what you do.
14:55I was a bit unfulfilled.
14:57When you told them na,
14:58this isn't for me,
14:59hindi naman sila parang na-disappoint.
15:02I mean, they didn't try and convince you
15:03to, you know, stay on
15:04for a little bit longer,
15:06maybe run for another position.
15:08Again, na story ayan.
15:09It's actually the story
15:10that's my testing only.
15:11I'm a Christian.
15:12I'm not born again Christian.
15:13My key to come back
15:14was God's will.
15:16And it happened so supernaturally.
15:18Grabe yan.
15:18I got back to television in 2004
15:21because 2006 was the time
15:24that dad was going to end his term
15:27as mayor of Manila.
15:28And the family agreed
15:30to make me run as his replacement.
15:31I was going to be mayor of Manila.
15:33And then me naman,
15:35though my heart was not in politics anymore,
15:37I was with the son.
15:38And I said, yes, okay, I'll do that.
15:40So we started,
15:41the whole family started preparing already.
15:43My propaganda was already out.
15:45We were already,
15:45we already had leaders
15:47down to the ward,
15:48down to the precinct level
15:50to prepare my politics
15:51to run as mayor.
15:53And then like any other politician,
15:54I said, the best way to get exposure
15:57is to be on television.
15:58Since my classmates in Mascob
16:00were already bosses then
16:01in all the channels.
16:02Mga boss na mga desk na eh.
16:04I called a friend
16:04and I told him,
16:05this is DJ Saldaan.
16:06I told, DJ, DJ,
16:07I need a break on TV.
16:08I'm bringing, what will you do?
16:09Anong gagawin mo?
16:10Then kasi,
16:11well, I really like animals, no?
16:12Since I was a kid,
16:13I took care of exotic animals.
16:15I'm very good with snakes and lizards
16:16and the creepy stuff.
16:18Then I told,
16:18I told DJ,
16:19sabi ko, bro,
16:20there's no local Steve Irwin.
16:21Steve Irwin,
16:22the crocodile hunter,
16:23was still alive then.
16:24No local Steve Irwin.
16:26I can be that.
16:27Huh?
16:27How are you gonna do that?
16:28You know, dad is mayor.
16:29We can convert Manila Zoo
16:30and make it like a
16:32teeny studio.
16:33We can put lighting there.
16:34I have access
16:35to the cages of the big animals,
16:37the crocodiles.
16:38We make it look like a swamp.
16:39Galon ang ano.
16:40Uy, maganda yan.
16:41And then,
16:42not only that,
16:43sabi niya,
16:44how am I gonna pay?
16:45How am I gonna get paid?
16:46You don't have to pay me
16:47kasi may agenda rin yo.
16:48Sponsor.
16:49You don't have to pay me.
16:51As a matter of fact,
16:51I can get sponsors
16:53for that segment.
16:54And I know exactly already
16:55what time show.
16:56Put me in the morning show
16:57para daily.
16:57My first break,
16:58I had a segment.
16:59It was a five-minute segment
17:00being Steve Irwin
17:01and playing with animals.
17:02My executive producer then,
17:03who's my manager now,
17:04Noel Ferret.
17:05My manager.
17:06Noel.
17:07Si Noel pala yan.
17:08Okay.
17:09That's when I met
17:10Noel first.
17:10Noel was the VP.
17:11Sabi ni Noel sakin,
17:12Kim,
17:13why are you limited to animals alone?
17:14I can see that you're very good
17:15with people also.
17:16You do people na rin.
17:17And then, he gave us a segment.
17:19It was me,
17:20T.J. Manoto,
17:20a former kapuso,
17:21and Mamari Rezalud.
17:23Ahh.
17:24I have my tape segment,
17:25my animal under segment.
17:26Aside from my tape segment,
17:28I had a live segment with T.J.
17:30We'd go and visit personalities
17:31na si Ritchie.
17:32Na si Ritchie.
17:33Apat pala kami, apat.
17:34So, we'd go to mga,
17:35mga different personalities.
17:37And then,
17:38medala akong hayop palagi.
17:40Si T.J. was a serious interviewer.
17:42Si Mamari,
17:42may on-on ang mga
17:44LGBTQ jokes
17:45ang gila nabas.
17:46It,
17:47the segment was so fumpy,
17:49it was rating so well.
17:50It went to us in well.
17:51Wow!
17:53And two segments na.
17:54But the hat had to stay.
17:56Kasi people so used to me
17:57wearing a hat.
17:58So, I was knowing people na,
18:00but still wearing a hat.
18:01And then,
18:02while still being EP,
18:03put me in another show
18:04with Bianca
18:05and,
18:06Ryan.
18:06Ayan.
18:07Ayan, Ryan.
18:08And,
18:08sina pa ba?
18:09Si Drew.
18:09Ahh.
18:10And then,
18:11why speak na?
18:11Dalawan na yung show ko.
18:12After a couple of years,
18:14no one said,
18:15o sa studio ka na.
18:16I became a main host na.
18:17And then, that's what really started.
18:19And then,
18:19this is it.
18:20After about a year and a half
18:22doing television,
18:23I knew already
18:24that my passion was television.
18:26I knew that
18:27I'm back.
18:27And I love this.
18:28And this is what,
18:29I'll do this for free.
18:31I had a duty to my family.
18:32So, ito na.
18:33I was split na.
18:34Elections was coming.
18:35In about six months,
18:36pag-election na.
18:36And,
18:37ang exposure ko maganda na.
18:38Nakikilala na ako ng tao.
18:40I had a bigger chance of winning na
18:41as mayor of Marina.
18:42Yet,
18:42I knew that my passion
18:44was really television.
18:45And then, this happened.
18:46Maria Reza,
18:47who was the head of news
18:48and current affairs in EBS then,
18:50was watching me pala
18:51all this time.
18:52Sabi niya,
18:52I really like this guy.
18:53He told me this after.
18:54Ernie Baron,
18:55the resident weatherman
18:56and walking encyclopedia,
18:57died
18:58in 2006.
18:59Before he died,
19:00I covered his house
19:01in my usual sentiment.
19:03And then,
19:03on air,
19:04lang,
19:05sabi niya,
19:05Bata,
19:06hindi ko yakimang tawag niyo sa Bata.
19:08Malapit na ako mamatay.
19:09At pag namatay ako,
19:10he put his hand on my shoulder.
19:11Ikaw ang papalit sakin.
19:13Oh!
19:14My co-host then,
19:14which was Winnie Cordero,
19:16started crying also.
19:17Ka-Ernie,
19:18oo sabihin yan!
19:19Because Ka-Ernie was healthy.
19:20He was not sick naman.
19:22But he had a premonition
19:23that he was going to die.
19:24So, we changed the topic.
19:25This is live.
19:26But we changed the topic.
19:27We made it funny again.
19:28But when I went home,
19:29I prayed to God.
19:30And I said,
19:30Lord,
19:31what was that?
19:32Parang,
19:33he saw my art.
19:33You know my art.
19:35You know that I want to be on television.
19:36And it was manifested
19:38through Ka-Ernie Baron.
19:39Parang,
19:40things are falling in place.
19:41So, I prayed to the Lord.
19:42Sabi ko,
19:42Lord,
19:43is this a sign?
19:45If this is a sign,
19:46your God,
19:47show me a stronger theater sign.
19:49I challenged the Lord.
19:50And then you know,
19:51Pia,
19:52January 23,
19:54a day before my birthday,
19:55in 2006,
19:56I got a phone call from Noel.
19:57Kim,
19:58tomorrow's your birthday.
19:59Sabi ko,
19:59yes, Noel.
20:00Sorry ha,
20:01but you will not have a party.
20:02You won't have a surprise party in the show.
20:04Sabi ko,
20:05Noel,
20:05that's okay.
20:05I'm not even expecting a party.
20:06No, no, no.
20:07Listen,
20:08you have no party
20:09because you have to cover the wake
20:11of Ka-Ernie Baron.
20:12He died today.
20:13Oh, no.
20:14Imagine,
20:15he told me that he was going to die.
20:17And he told me that I was going to replace him.
20:19And a day before my birthday,
20:21he died.
20:22And on my birthday,
20:24I was covering the wake of Ka-Ernie Baron.
20:26How clear a sign is that?
20:27So, Maria Reza talked to me.
20:28Sabi niya,
20:29Kim,
20:29I want you to choose.
20:30Show me a contract.
20:31Here's a contract.
20:32I want you to formally work for me.
20:34I want you to sign this.
20:36I have a career for you.
20:37Wow!
20:37Sabi ko,
20:38Mayor of Manila,
20:40good son to my father,
20:41and my passion,
20:43a career on television,
20:45with a contract!
20:46Maybayad!
20:46Oh my gosh!
20:47I prayed to the Lord again.
20:49My next prayer to the Lord,
20:50sabi ko,
20:51Jesus Christ,
20:51I know very clearly what you want for me.
20:53I know that you want me to be on television.
20:55Now,
20:55give me the courage.
20:57Give me the courage to talk to my dad.
20:58To tell him
20:59na ang papalitan ko si Ka-Ernie Baron
21:01at hindi siya.
21:02Ang hirap nun!
21:03Oo,
21:03they're all expecting.
21:04Nakapaghanda na sila.
21:06Napinakagastos na sila, Pia.
21:08Oo.
21:09So I invited dad to breakfast.
21:10For breakfast in my room,
21:11we were seated in this table.
21:12Ito to.
21:13I'm seated by my kitchen table.
21:15I couldn't tell him.
21:16Dad was there.
21:17Then my mom was on the other side.
21:19And it was me and Feli.
21:20I couldn't tell him.
21:20Dad,
21:21I was near tears na.
21:22And then my dad said,
21:23Kim,
21:24you don't have to tell me.
21:25Every time I watch you on television,
21:27I see how happy you are.
21:28Go where you're happy.
21:30You don't have to tell me.
21:31I understand.
21:31Oh my gosh, Pia.
21:33I gave my dad a big hug.
21:34I started crying.
21:36And I said,
21:36thank you, dad.
21:37And that was the beginning
21:39of Kuya Kim's career on television,
21:41on cam,
21:42not a voice talent,
21:43but seeing my face
21:45that's not
21:46kogi,
21:46not talent,
21:47that's ako lang.
21:48Thank you, Iga.
21:51And the beginning of your career
21:52na may bayad na.
21:53May bayad na.
21:56Matagal-tagal pala
21:57bago nagkabayad.
21:59Matagal-tagal.
22:00Oo nga.
22:01But wow, Kuya Kim,
22:02I never knew the backstory.
22:03I mean, I just had always assumed,
22:05because I remember,
22:06I mean,
22:07halos sabay-sabay lang din naman tayo
22:08nag-umpisa, diba?
22:09I remember when,
22:10because I was already in GMA at that time,
22:12and then they would talk about,
22:13oh, nakita niyo na ba si Kuya Kim?
22:14Kinala niyo si Kuya Kim?
22:15Kasi talagang
22:16your on-cam presence
22:18was really something to take note of.
22:20And listening to you now,
22:21Kuya Kim,
22:22telling the story about how
22:23at that time pa lang,
22:24you were already turning to God,
22:25to your faith,
22:26to help you make big decisions.
22:28That means ever since before,
22:29malakas na talaga yung faith mo.
22:31I always thought
22:33that
22:34parang the turning point for you
22:35was when you had suffered from a stroke,
22:37but it was even before that pa pala,
22:39Kuya Kim?
22:39Yeah, I went to the seminary.
22:41Huh?
22:41Oh my gosh, Kuya Kim!
22:43You're blowing me away
22:43with all these revelations.
22:45Voice-dubber,
22:46nag-seminaryo ka pa pala.
22:48After my high school,
22:49two years,
22:50was in Don Bosco,
22:51junior rate in Pampanga,
22:52because I wanted
22:54to be a priest.
22:55Oh, my theology,
22:56my Catholic theology
22:57is quite solid.
22:58I can even pray in Latin,
22:59and I know Latin.
23:00Because I took two years of Latin,
23:02I know that our Father in Latin,
23:04Pater Noster,
23:04quiescens celis,
23:05arcupicetur,
23:06nobentum adveniat,
23:06renuntum fiat,
23:07unodus tuat,
23:08sicut in cello,
23:08et in terra.
23:09I know all the prayers.
23:10Swift from the heart.
23:11First meetings at that time in Latin,
23:13because we used to pray in Latin
23:14in seminary,
23:15because I wanted so badly
23:16to be a priest.
23:17Because early on,
23:18even as a young boy,
23:20Jesus Christ
23:21was always my best friend.
23:23I would talk to Him.
23:24I would pray to Him.
23:25I was also always a very prayerful kid.
23:27Pag binabuli ako sa saratan dinas,
23:29I would pray to Him.
23:30But Jesus Christ,
23:31growing up,
23:32was not my Lord and Savior.
23:34And that makes a difference.
23:36Jesus Christ was only a friend
23:38to turn to.
23:39Of course, He was my Father.
23:40He was Papa Jesus.
23:42He was best friend Jesus.
23:43But He was not Lord Jesus.
23:46And that makes a difference.
23:47Now, when did I finally accept Him
23:49as Lord and Savior?
23:50This was when I got sick again.
23:522010,
23:53I suffered a stroke.
23:542013,
23:55I got sick again.
23:56Another marked-out illness.
23:58It's a rare disorder
23:59called Guillain-Barre syndrome.
24:00My hands and my feet
24:01got paralyzed.
24:02I was going to be totally paralyzed
24:04and eventually die.
24:05And I was in ICU
24:06when I prayed to the Lord
24:07and I said,
24:08Lord, help me.
24:09And that's when I called a friend,
24:10Rika Paraneo,
24:11who was married to a pastor,
24:13Pastor Joe Bonifacio.
24:14Rika was my co-host
24:15in the morning show.
24:16She's human.
24:17But nasan ka?
24:18I'm in ICU.
24:19Nasa ICU ko na naman!
24:20Yep.
24:21But this time,
24:21bring your husband,
24:22Pastor Joe Bonifacio,
24:24here.
24:24Why?
24:25Because I want to be born again.
24:26I want to accept Jesus Christ
24:27as Lord and Savior.
24:29That's that day.
24:30In 2013,
24:32was when I finally accepted Jesus
24:33not only as best friend,
24:35but as Lord and Savior.
24:36Now, being Lord,
24:37of course,
24:38iba yung Lord eh.
24:39A Lord has power of life and death
24:41over you.
24:42Yet, He's a loving Father
24:44at the same time.
24:45But He's Lord.
24:46Ibig sabi may rules.
24:47So,
24:47I do not sin.
24:48I don't willfully sin.
24:50Unlike before,
24:51I would just sin, sin, sin, sin, sin.
24:52Yet, because He's my best friend,
24:54my best friend will understand.
24:55Now He's my Lord,
24:56I do my best to make my Lord happy.
24:58And that makes a difference.
24:59Wow!
25:00What a story, Kuya Kim!
25:02After that,
25:03because I know,
25:03I mean, I've seen this personally
25:05that you share your faith
25:06as much as you can,
25:07diba?
25:08Did you take your whole family
25:09with you on that journey?
25:11Or,
25:12was it really just a personal journey for you?
25:14You know, Pia,
25:15Fanny is a Buddhist.
25:18Fanny's not Filipino.
25:19She's Taiwanese.
25:20And she comes from a family of Buddhists.
25:22So, she's Buddhist as well.
25:23And growing up,
25:24my kids,
25:24because Fanny had a different faith,
25:26I had a different faith.
25:27I was a non-practicing Catholic.
25:29The kids were baptized in the Catholic faith,
25:31yet I was not able to bring them up
25:33the way a Christian dad would bring them up
25:36because we came up with a faith in Fanny.
25:39So, the kids grew up very agnostic as well,
25:40like the Penedets.
25:41And then we made them study ISM plus IS,
25:44very agnostic,
25:44because the many religions,
25:46you can't really impose your own religion.
25:48So, the kids are quite agnostic,
25:51like Fanny.
25:52Yet,
25:53there's a promise in the Bible.
25:54The promise is when the head of the household
25:56gets saved,
25:58then the whole household will be saved as well.
25:59What I can do is plant seeds.
26:01And I've been planting seeds all these years.
26:03And my kids will accept the Lord.
26:05Fanny will accept the Lord in God's time.
26:07It took me 40 plus years
26:09to accept him as Lord and Savior.
26:11It's only been 11 years.
26:12So, there's still a lot of time.
26:13But the good news is
26:15my son called me last year from Boston.
26:18He graduated last month
26:19in Tufts University in Boston.
26:21He called me last year and he said,
26:22Papa,
26:23about two years ago,
26:24I want to learn more about my faith.
26:26Hey,
26:26what got you to this point?
26:28I was baptized Catholic
26:30and just want to get to know more about Jesus Christ.
26:32Yet, at a certain point in his life,
26:33he's already 20 years old.
26:34He wanted to discover Christ.
26:36When he got that,
26:37I took him to Catechism class.
26:38He took his first Holy Communion
26:40at 20 years old.
26:41And then,
26:42now he's deep into his Catholic faith.
26:44Now, I'm born again a Christian,
26:45but I know that Catholics can be saved as well.
26:47Theology is basically the same.
26:49The essence is different.
26:50I told Jose,
26:51Jose,
26:52be the best Catholic you can be.
26:54But don't forget this.
26:55Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior.
26:57And work on that walk
26:58and that relationship with Jesus Christ.
27:00And then,
27:00everything else will fall in its place.
27:02You got into your theology,
27:03learn about the Catholic faith,
27:05but get back to the fundamentals.
27:06The fundamental is
27:08Jesus is your Lord and Savior
27:10and work on that relationship.
27:12So, he's Catholic,
27:12practicing Catholic,
27:14with a solid walk with Jesus Christ as well.
27:17So, one kid na.
27:18Two kids to go.
27:19And finally,
27:20again in the Lord's time.
27:21Wow!
27:22It's so nice to see,
27:23Kuya Kim,
27:23how you're so conversant about your faith.
27:26That you're so comfortable
27:27talking about your faith.
27:28Because sometimes,
27:29a lot of people,
27:30they're not comfortable
27:31when we talk about this,
27:32whether on TV or in interviews,
27:34because they like to keep it to themselves.
27:35But you're the opposite.
27:36You share it with others.
27:38So, Kuya Kim,
27:39my question is,
27:40you said earlier,
27:41your son is already 20 years old,
27:43just graduated from college,
27:45and you have three kids.
27:47How old is your youngest, Kuya Kim?
27:49Jose is now 21,
27:51turning 22.
27:52Eliana,
27:53who's been in the world news lately,
27:54is 19.
27:56And then my youngest,
27:58Eman,
27:58is 18.
27:59So, three kids.
28:00And they're going to have another child.
28:02And you've been married,
28:03you've been married for how long, Kuya Kim?
28:04I've been married for almost 23 years now.
28:06Wow!
28:07Almost your silver anniversary, Kuya Kim.
28:09And you mentioned earlier,
28:10that your wife, Feli,
28:11is actually not Filipina.
28:13But how did you guys meet?
28:19Interesting topics
28:20and insightful conversations
28:22with one of the country's
28:24veteran and most award-winning journalists,
28:27Javi Severino.
28:28The Javi Severino Podcast
28:31was hailed as one of Spotify's

28:41The Javi Severino Podcast
28:43new episodes streams every Thursday
28:46on major streaming platforms.
28:51You mentioned earlier,
28:52that your wife, Feli,
28:53is actually not Filipina.
28:54But how did you guys meet?
28:56Oh my, that's another story.
28:57It will take two hours
28:58of your podcast.
29:00The condensed version, Kuya Kim.
29:02Condensed version.
29:03Feli and I,
29:04this is a classic example of
29:06love at first sight that worked.
29:07It was love at first sight
29:08with Feli and me.
29:09I remember back then,
29:10this was in 1999,
29:12a friend of mine,
29:12Ana Piniquet,
29:14was on assignment.
29:15I told Ana,
29:15Ana,
29:16look around
29:17for my idea of love at first sight.
29:19For my ideal wife.
29:21For someone that I can marry.
29:22Because I was so ready to get married.
29:24How old were you then?
29:2532, 33 years old.
29:26Okay.
29:27I want to get married, Ana.
29:28Look for someone I can marry.
29:30So she was constantly scouting around,
29:31looking around for someone I can marry.
29:33Someone I can get to be,
29:34you know, I can get to know
29:36the marriage material.
29:37And then one night,
29:38I was smoking my shisha pipe.
29:39There's a
29:41shawarma restaurant here in Malacca.
29:42It's the most famous
29:43shawarma restaurant in the Philippines.
29:45This is the first one.
29:46It's called Shawarma Snack Center.
29:48I was always in the habit of
29:49bringing my vintage scooter,
29:51bringing it there,
29:52as a typical Malati boy,
29:53in my retro outfit,
29:54and smoke my shisha pipe.
29:56And drink my Turkish coffee.
29:58That was my style back then.
30:00And then I got a phone call
30:03from my Nokia 5110.
30:04You're still counting your texts
30:06because your memory is running out.
30:08Kim, I found the park
30:09that will open for you.
30:10I said, really?
30:11Tell me more.
30:12She's beautiful.
30:13She's smart.
30:14She's educated abroad.
30:16And you'll like her.
30:17You'll like her.
30:18Very elegant-looking.
30:20Her name is Felicia.
30:21Okay.
30:22But Kim, there's a catch.
30:24What's the catch?
30:25She's leaving.
30:26Where's she going?
30:27She's going to London
30:28to work for Merrill Lynch.
30:30Okay.
30:31When's she coming back?
30:32She's not coming back.
30:33Actually, she didn't.
30:34It's like a goodbye dinner.
30:35It's an engagement dinner
30:37for her brother
30:38who's getting married.
30:39And it's also a goodbye dinner for her.
30:40She's leaving in 48 hours for good.
30:42But I want you to meet her.
30:44You're talking nonsense.
30:46Anyway, she got booed.
30:47So I took my vintage Vespa,
30:49went to a restaurant in Makati,
30:50and then I went inside that restaurant.
30:52When I opened the door,
30:54I saw this woman
30:55in the table in the far end.
30:57She had slicked-back hair,
30:58very elegant.
30:59She was very slim and tan.
31:01And she had this air about her
31:03that's so elegant.
31:04She was just exuding this beauty
31:06and this confidence.
31:07And when I saw her,
31:08then I remembered who she was.
31:10She was Felicia Hong,
31:12who was always 10 Best Dress,
31:14Women We Admire.
31:16She was always in the Pulp Fiction magazines.
31:18And she was always featured
31:19in some shows.
31:20Oh, my gosh.
31:21I like her.
31:22I liked her already
31:23the first time I saw her.
31:24Then I sat on her table.
31:26I was introduced.
31:27I went for a drink.
31:28I asked her a question.
31:29After 20 minutes,
31:30I had a conversation.
31:31I told her,
31:32Felicia,
31:33do you believe in love at first sight?
31:35And then without batting an eyelash,
31:37she looked at me
31:38straight in the eye.
31:40And she told me,
31:41yes, I do.
31:42I didn't bring a car tonight.
31:43I brought a vintage motorcycle.
31:45Would you like to ride with me?
31:47Take you around?
31:48I'd love that.
31:49She left her family,
31:50her brother's engagement party,
31:52and our party.
31:53She rode my Vespa,
31:54and I took her around Malate.
31:56We went around Malate.
31:57And then, I enjoyed it.
31:58I said,
31:59I'll get her.
32:00On the way home,
32:01this was early morning,
32:02around 2 in the morning,
32:03I took her to the number one bar,
32:04which was Venecia.
32:05Of course, I got there.
32:06I took her to Venecia.
32:08This was the boom years
32:09of the stock market.
32:10Yeah, this was 1999.
32:11Ferrari was old.
32:12It was parked outside Venecia.
32:14This was Kim Atienza.
32:16I didn't get her yet.
32:17Kim Atienza,
32:18in a vintage Vespa,
32:191962 Vespa,
32:20with a woman.
32:21She was riding in the back,
32:23with a helmet.
32:24I didn't have a helmet
32:25that I gave to Fannie.
32:26Then we went home.
32:27Kim was here.
32:28The girls were behind me.
32:29When Fannie got off,
32:31everybody knew Fannie.
32:32All the stock brokers,
32:33all these wealthy men in Ferraris,
32:35they knew Fannie.
32:36She took off her helmet.
32:37Oh my gosh,
32:38it's Felicia.
32:39She was with Kim Atienza.
32:41What happened?
32:42Who can believe this?
32:43She was riding in a Vespa.
32:45That's our first night.
32:46The second day,
32:47I told Fannie,
32:48I want to take you to the airport.
32:49So before we went to the airport,
32:51the flight was at night.
32:52We had late lunch
32:53in People's Palace.
32:55People's Palace was still in Malate.
32:57So I took her to Nakpil,
32:58People's Palace.
32:59Then I told Fannie,
33:00You know, Fannie,
33:01this moment is just so beautiful.
33:02This last two days,
33:04it would be a waste
33:05to let it unroll.
33:06But again,
33:07it's too soon
33:08to get into a relationship
33:09with each other
33:10because we just met each other.
33:12But let's do this.
33:13Let's take this
33:14three months at a time.
33:15She looked at me
33:16straight in the eye again
33:17and said,
33:18Okay, what do you have in mind?
33:19I said,
33:20Then I took off my watch.
33:21It was a Technomarine.
33:22Beat up Technomarine.
33:23I used to bike with it.
33:24I would swim with it.
33:25I would,
33:26I had my sweat
33:27and my libado.
33:28I took it out
33:29and I told,
33:30This watch
33:31has all my energy.
33:32Keep it with you.
33:33Wear it.
33:34And then,
33:35this coming December,
33:36give it back to me.
33:37But let's take this
33:38three months at a time.
33:39For three months,
33:40here's my watch.
33:41Can you be mine?
33:42And then,
33:43unflinching,
33:44she took off her watch,
33:45put it on my wrist,
33:46and said,
33:47I'm yours for three months.
33:49It was us.
33:50Oh my gosh.
33:51Kuya Kimpang Pelikula.
33:53Sobra.
33:54Sobra.
33:55Grabe.
33:56So I won.
33:57And then,
33:58two weeks after that day,
33:59I said,
34:00I have to see Feli again.
34:02Wala pong Facebook nun.
34:03Wala pong FaceTime nun.
34:05Wala pong Skype.
34:06Rotary phone.
34:08Digital nun konti.
34:09Parang mahal.
34:10Mahal.
34:11Putin lang stock broker siya.
34:12So in between
34:13client calls,
34:14bibi ng telepono,
34:15she'd call me all the time.
34:16So we'd talk to each other
34:17so many times a day.
34:18But I found a way
34:19to get to London.
34:20And that was the beginning
34:21of our beautiful relationship.
34:23Two years after that day,
34:24we had a long distance relationship
34:26for a year.
34:27Then she came home.
34:28And then,
34:29we got married.
34:30Wow.
34:31So you have plans already
34:32for your 25th?
34:34I'm planning,
34:35parang gusto ko church siya na.
34:36Church ceremony.
34:37I want the pastor there.
34:39I want parang marriage again.
34:41I want ano,
34:42what do you call it?
34:43Renewal of vows.
34:44Parang renewal of vows.
34:45Oh, the renewal of vows.
34:46I'd like to do that.
34:47Wow.
34:48And then maybe a party
34:49of a small group of people.
34:50You're invited.
34:51Thanks Kuya Kim.
34:53Nabagit mo parang
34:541999 pa lang,
34:56naka ano ka na,
34:57vintage vespa ka na.
34:59So your love affair pala
35:00with motorcycles
35:01is from long ago.
35:02Kasi alam namin na,
35:03you have a passion
35:06for your motorcycles.
35:08So,
35:09nag-ubisa pala yan
35:10way back pa.
35:11College pa lang ba?
35:12Yes.
35:13In college,
35:14ginakaw ang kotse ko eh.
35:16I had a beat-up
35:17Toyota Corona
35:19that I used to go to school.
35:21Ginakaw siya.
35:22Sabi ko,
35:23oh my gosh,
35:24ginakaw ang kotse ko.
35:25You know,
35:26as a college student,
35:27you're so dependent on the car.
35:28I realized,
35:29I would use it to school
35:30and use it for my gimmicks.
35:31It was tied up to my status
35:32and my being.
35:33Ang kotse ko,
35:34I'm a level up.
35:36Other classmates
35:37had no car.
35:38But my car
35:39was beat up.
35:40It was a taxi type
35:41Toyota Corona.
35:42It got tarned up
35:43and then I found myself
35:44with no car.
35:45Sabi ko,
35:46am I gonna do this?
35:47So I got a old motorcycle,
35:48a Honda CB400
35:49and I used it
35:50to go to school.
35:51But I was dependent
35:52on that then.
35:53I lived in his house.
35:54E anti-motorcycle
35:55ng daddy ko.
35:56So sabi nga,
35:57hindi po it had.
35:58You give it back.
35:59I sold it again
36:00to the original owner.
36:01I had no motorcycle nga.
36:02What I did was
36:03I lived on campus
36:04with a friend,
36:05Jonas Mueva.
36:06His dad,
36:07Jonas' dad,
36:08was the president of UP then.
36:09We lived in executive house.
36:10Wow!
36:13What I used everyday
36:14to go around campus
36:15was a bicycle.
36:16So I took class
36:17in my cycling outfit
36:18and I was quite buff then.
36:19I'd take a bicycle,
36:20my mountain bike
36:21for many years
36:22and just go around.
36:23On weekends,
36:24I'd go back to my home
36:25on a bicycle.
36:26So my love affair
36:27with two wheels
36:28started way back
36:29in college pa lang.
36:30And after college,
36:31since I was independent na,
36:32I had money na,
36:33I bought my first Vespa.
36:35It's a Vespa PX.
36:371995 Vespa PX 150.
36:40And then that started
36:41my love affair again
36:42with motorcycles and scooters.
36:44I started a small collection
36:46of vintage motorcycles.
36:47I had a Vespa GS 116
36:49which I still have up to now.
36:50When I was counselor,
36:51all my colleagues
36:53in the council
36:54would come to work
36:55and would go around the district
36:56in their nice cars.
36:57I was known as the one
36:58who'd go around on a Vespa.
37:01I'd go around my district
37:02on a Vespa.
37:03It started in the 90s.
37:05And then when I got married
37:06and then I had kids,
37:07I'd put it on hold first
37:08because my kids
37:09were growing up.
37:10So I sold all my Vespas.
37:11Oh, okay.
37:12Recently, mga 20s,
37:14I wasn't riding for a long time.
37:16I got into Land Rovers naman.
37:18I was in my four vehicles.
37:21I'd do my weather report
37:22on top of a Land Rover.
37:23I'd go around on a Land Rover,
37:24a vintage Land Rover,
37:251969.
37:26And then 2015,
37:28I was able to buy back
37:29all my scooters
37:30from Old Forest.
37:31All three of them.
37:32As in the actual scooters
37:34that you owned?
37:35Yeah.
37:36I bought them back
37:37from Matthew Brill,
37:38a friend of mine.
37:39He owns Prismic
37:40and really likes
37:41antique and vintage stuff.
37:42Gives him Kampanga.
37:43I was able to get them back.
37:45And then I started building
37:46a collection of big bikes.
37:482016, up to this day,
37:50I've been on a big bike
37:51or a scooter
37:52every single day.
37:53It's a conscious decision
37:54not to take a car anymore.
37:56Only when I need to.
37:57When I'm with my kids
37:58or with Fenny,
37:59all my kids are gone.
38:00So 99% of the time,
38:01I'm on a motorcycle.
38:02So how many motorcycles
38:03do you have now,
38:04Kuya Kim?
38:05Plenty.
38:06They might feature me
38:07on Fox News again
38:08if I've seen this.
38:09But aren't they all
38:10lined up in the garage?
38:11Yeah, less than 20.
38:12Yeah.
38:13Less than 20.
38:14But I don't have a car anymore.
38:15So that's okay.
38:16But on a date night,
38:17do you still
38:18sometimes go around
38:19on a Vespa?
38:20Of course.
38:21If it's just the two of us,
38:22on a Vespa or Harley,
38:23Fenny's motorcycle
38:24is just the two of us.
38:25Whether it's far or near,
38:26we ride together.
38:27Fenny's car.
38:28Fenny's car.
38:29She drives.
38:30You're not the one
38:31who drives, Kuya Kim?
38:32No.
38:33She doesn't like my driving.
38:35When we're both
38:36on a Harley-Davidson,
38:37I drive back home.
38:39Ah, okay.
38:40Wow.
38:41And Kuya Kim,
38:42of course,
38:43aside from your motorcycles,
38:44you're also very passionate
38:46about your pets
38:47and your animals,
38:48which you also have
38:49at home, right?
38:50Yeah.
38:51Can you just enumerate
38:52some of your favorite animals
38:54or your pets at home?
38:55When we moved to this home
38:56a long time ago,
38:57about 18 years ago,
38:58we had dogs.
38:59But most of our dogs then
39:00were guard dogs
39:01who were purebred,
39:03meaning pinchers,
39:04because they're noisy.
39:05And then the six pinchers
39:06became 27 pinchers.
39:08It was so many dogs.
39:09But for the past six years,
39:11Fenny and I decided
39:12that we're going to be
39:13amputee nesting soon.
39:14Then we're going to be
39:15amputee nesting already.
39:16We decided to start
39:17adopting Aspens.
39:19So all our purebred dogs,
39:21they passed away
39:22and they're old now.
39:23Then the dogs that,
39:24most of the dogs here
39:25in the house
39:26are called Aspens.
39:27Most of them are Aspens.
39:28Elderly Aspens
39:30that are unadaptable
39:31and we adopt them.
39:32And so far,
39:33we have about 46, 47 dogs
39:35and a lot of them
39:36are adopted Aspens.
39:37Elderly Aspens.
39:38But do they have
39:39their own area?
39:40Yes.
39:41About 17 of these dogs
39:42are indoor
39:43and the rest are outdoor.
39:45The indoor pack,
39:46very solid,
39:47very territorial.
39:48The indoor pack
39:49has its own alpha
39:50and the outdoor pack
39:51has its own alpha also.
39:53Outdoor dogs
39:54will not go inside
39:55because they know
39:56that there's another pack there.
39:58And the indoor dogs
39:59will only go outside briefly
40:00and then rush inside
40:02just to make me weak
40:03and we'll go number two.
40:04Outside,
40:05we'll come back.
40:07Kuya Kim,
40:08they must be very well-behaved
40:09because we've been talking
40:10for a while
40:11about the dogs we hear.
40:12Actually,
40:13it's a shame
40:14because there are a lot of dogs here.
40:15I have about 17 dogs.
40:17But even dogs,
40:18about 80% of the day,
40:20they're still sleeping.
40:21Ah, they're sleeping now.
40:23Okay, that's why.
40:26Aspens are here.
40:27And then,
40:28it's funny
40:29because we decided
40:30to adopt Aspens
40:31but we ended up
40:32with five
40:33national champion
40:34Labradors.
40:35Black Labradors.
40:37Aside from the Aspen.
40:38Because
40:39the champion
40:40Labrador breeder
40:41found out
40:42that we were adopting Aspens
40:43and that we love
40:44our Aspens so much,
40:45contacted us
40:46from out of the blue.
40:47James Jeff,
40:48he said,
40:49you know,
40:50Mr. and Mrs. Junkhead,
40:51so I contacted my wife.
40:52I can see that you
40:53adopt dogs.
40:54You're the leader
40:55of the champion Labradors.
40:56You know,
40:57I have so many Labradors
40:58already.
40:59I want all of them
41:00when they retire
41:01to go to a good home.
41:02And I've chosen your home.
41:03We're so happy
41:04that we ended up
41:05with five
41:06such beautiful
41:07Labradors
41:08with Aspens.
41:09We have Aspens
41:10that are unadaptable
41:11to any.
41:12But we love so much
41:13and we have five
41:14beautiful
41:15national champion
41:16Labradors
41:17with Aspens
41:18coexisting
41:19and it's beautiful.
41:20Wow!
41:21There's no discrimination
41:22in our house.
41:23We have the national
41:24champion Labrador
41:25and the Aspen.
41:26The rescued Aspen
41:27that almost died.
41:28Lolo Raff
41:29became the alpha.
41:30The alpha of the Labrador
41:31is an elderly Aspen
41:32that was near death
41:33that we adopted
41:34from Potion Project.
41:35Lolo Raff.
41:36Brother Kim,
41:37aside from your dogs,
41:38you have other animals
41:39at home, right?
41:40Yes.
41:41Before I met Felly,
41:42I was heavy
41:43to exotics.
41:44I breed tortoises.
41:45I have Aldabra tortoises,
41:46big ones.
41:47I think you've seen them
41:48in one of our parties here.
41:49I think I've seen them
41:50in one of our parties here.
41:52I have frogs.
41:53I have lizards.
41:55I have monitor lizards.
41:57I have iguanas.
41:58I have birds.
42:00I have different species
42:01of turtles, etc.
42:03Do any of the kids
42:04share your passion
42:05for animals and pets?
42:06Oh, yes.
42:07All of them.
42:08All of them.
42:09All three kids
42:10are so into the dogs.
42:12The youngest, Eman,
42:13is into snakes.
42:14She likes snakes.
42:15She uses my snakes
42:16as an accessory
42:17whenever she has a party.
42:20There's always a snake
42:21around her neck.
42:22Wow!
42:23Something to talk about
42:24at a party, right?
42:25Yup.
42:27But, Kim,
42:28we know you have
42:29a busy day ahead.
42:30But before we go,
42:31can we just do
42:32a very, very quick game?
42:33This is just a heart-to-heart trivia.
42:35I'll read the mechanics,
42:36Kim.
42:37You'll just give
42:38a lesson on trivia
42:39about you
42:40and some of your
42:41heart-to-heart co-hosts.
42:42Okay.
42:43Here, Kim,
42:44I will make you choose
42:46either trivia about you
42:47or trivia about
42:48your co-hosts.
42:49There are two.
42:50Co-hosts first.
42:51Just the co-hosts?
42:52Okay.
42:53Yes.
42:54So, yes,
42:55the first name here
42:56is Susan Enriquez.
42:57What do we not know
42:58about Ate Sue?
42:59She's a different class.
43:00Ate Sue,
43:01you know,
43:02in the first few weeks,
43:03I was just with Emy,
43:04but now it's Susan.
43:06I said,
43:07Susan is so good.
43:09She memorized
43:10all the names
43:11of all the staff.
43:12How did she do that?
43:14I've been here for two years
43:15and I still can't
43:16remember all the names.
43:17Cameraman,
43:18new PA.
43:19Susan is so good.
43:20I believe in her.
43:21And then realized
43:22many months after,
43:23she's just inventing
43:24the names for Susan.
43:26You know,
43:27our producer
43:28calls her Baby Girl.
43:30Baby Girl, come.
43:31Baby Girl.
43:32Then I found out,
43:33that's not the name
43:34of Baby Girl.
43:35She's the one
43:36inventing the names.
43:37And then,
43:38our director,
43:39he's just
43:40getting
43:41different names.
43:42She's the one
43:43inventing the names
43:44so she can memorize them.
43:45She's so nice.
43:46Our staff
43:47are so nice.
43:48So,
43:49in their mind,
43:50for Susan,
43:51I'm Baby Girl.
43:52So,
43:53Kim,
43:54you need to try
43:55that strategy.
43:56Susan,
43:57has genuine
43:58relationships
43:59with the staff.
44:00Susan has deep
44:01relationships.
44:02That's why
44:03Susan loves
44:04the staff so much.
44:05It's just her style.
44:06It's just her style.
44:07I'm also like that.
44:08All the people
44:09call me bro.
44:10I'm like,
44:11okay, bro.
44:12Because
44:13that's how
44:14I feel.
44:15But for Susan,
44:16it's easy.
44:17She loves the staff
44:18and she loves
44:19the staff.
44:20Most of my colleagues
44:21are deep
44:22on a deep
44:23friendship level.
44:24It's not just
44:25a working relationship.
44:26Oh,
44:27we're like Susan.
44:28We're like Susan.
44:29How about
44:30a trivia
44:31about
44:32Emil Sumangil?
44:33Emil Sumangil?
44:34Oh my.
44:35Emil Sumangil,
44:36I'm so sorry.
44:37It's not your fault.
44:38What do you mean
44:39I'm so sorry?
44:40What's your fault?
44:41I'll pass by
44:42in front of him
44:43and say,
44:44sorry, sorry.
44:45Bro,
44:46sorry,
44:47sorry,
44:48sorry.
44:49How are you?
44:50Sorry.
44:51Sorry.
44:52Sorry.
44:53Sorry.
44:54I'm so sorry.
44:55How are you?
44:56Sorry.
44:57Sorry.
44:58Sorry.
44:59Sorry.
45:00Sorry.
45:01Sorry.
45:02Emil is so humble.
45:03Emil is so
45:04down-to-earth.
45:05He's always like that.
45:06It's just how
45:07he is.
45:08Isn't that
45:09how Emil is?
45:10Yes.
45:11All the people
45:12very close to the Lord, religious.
45:14See, Emil is a super-duper-duper deep Catholic.
45:17He has a tattoo of Jesus Christ on his back.
45:20He's the type of person who, when he's on TV,
45:22he becomes the Knights of Columbus.
45:24He becomes the leader of the Church,
45:25he becomes the Knights of Columbus.
45:26That kind of faith he has.
45:27And then, not only that,
45:29Emil is also so loved by the police.
45:32If there's a need for the police,
45:34Emil is the man.
45:35Because a lot of people cannot say no to Emil
45:37because of his deep relationship down there
45:40to the people that matter, especially to the police.
45:43That's so true.
45:44If there's a need for help,
45:46Hello, Emil.
45:48Send help to Emil.
45:50That's something, whatever,
45:52Emil has known him since he was a lieutenant.
45:55Because Emil has been covering him for a long time.
45:58Ever since before, they've been friends.
46:01You know what's weird?
46:02My neighbor,
46:03he calls Emil Mr. Scoop.
46:05You know why?
46:07Because the police,
46:08if they have a story,
46:10they won't give it to others.
46:12And if they love Emil so much,
46:13they'll give it to Emil first.
46:14They won't give it to Mr. Scoop.
46:16They'll give it to him
46:17because it's deep to him.
46:19They'll give the story to him.
46:20How about this, Kim?
46:22Patricia,
46:23Patricia Tumulak,
46:24who also became your co-host on Dapat Alam Mo.
46:26Patricia Tumulak,
46:27she weights so much.
46:29Even if I'm not with Dapat Alam Mo,
46:31we get to work out every Monday.
46:33We have a date every Monday,
46:34we crossfit together.
46:35She squats so much.
46:36If you ask me how much I weigh,
46:38I'd say just under Patricia.
46:40Wow!
46:41Patricia is one of the fittest women I know.
46:43She's just simple.
46:44She's not arrogant.
46:45She's just like that.
46:46But when you see her lifting weights
46:47and doing crossfit,
46:48you'll be surprised.
46:49Patricia is as strong as a man.
46:52Here's another one of the fittest women
46:56I'm sure you know.
46:57Ia Villania.
46:58Oh, sorry.
46:59I take it back.
47:00The fittest woman in the industry
47:01is Ia Villania.
47:02What else but Patricia?
47:05There's one very difficult move in crossfit
47:07called the muscle-up.
47:08You do a pull-up,
47:09and then when you do a pull-up,
47:10you muscle-up,
47:11and then you push yourself up on the bar.
47:14It's a gymnastics move.
47:16Males, even I cannot do that yet.
47:18Ia can do that so easily.
47:19Many times.
47:20Wow!
47:21Ia's moves are so manly.
47:23Ia, when I moved to GMA 7,
47:25I said,
47:26hey, is it Drew and Ia
47:27are having a baby at the wedding?
47:29Hey, I'm going to be working with Drew!
47:31Finally!
47:32Okay!
47:33And then I find out
47:34my first show in GMA is 24 Hours.
47:37My second show is Mars.
47:39I can see Ia and Ia.
47:41Where's Ia?
47:42I'm working with Drew.
47:43It's all Ia, Ia, Ia.
47:45It's all Ia who's working.
47:47I'm not working with Drew.
47:49Let's save that.
47:50Maybe by the end of this year,
47:52you'll be working with Drew.
47:54But I'm close to both.
47:55I've seen them both
47:56in the crossfit GMA.
47:58But more than Drew.
48:00For Drew,
48:01my trivia is
48:02of all the artistas
48:03that did triathlon,
48:04no one is stronger than Drew Arellano.
48:06Really?
48:07No one is stronger than Drew.
48:08Drew Arellano
48:09is the only artista triathlete
48:11that was able to break
48:125 hours in a half Ironman.
48:15I break 6 hours.
48:16And that's already a peak.
48:18That's already maybe 3%
48:19of the population of triathletes
48:21who is able to break
48:225 hours in a 70.3.
48:24It's hard to do that.
48:26Maybe Drew can do that.
48:27Drew is able to do a full Ironman
48:29in 10 hours.
48:30My full Ironman is 14-15 hours.
48:32Drew does it in hours.
48:35He's that fit.
48:36Wow.
48:37They really suit each other.
48:39They really suit each other.
48:41Even their muscles.
48:42Drew's muscles.
48:45Oh my.
48:46Maybe this is your influence.
48:48Because our next co-host
48:50is Camille Prats
48:52who also is very fit right now.
48:54She also exercises a lot.
48:56Camille.
48:57We call her A-B-B.
48:59Whenever Ea and I see Camille
49:00it's A-B-B.
49:01Do you know what A-B-B means?
49:03No.
49:04That term was coined by PR.
49:06It's called UBB,
49:07Ultimate Beach Babe.
49:11When you see a Camille's beach body
49:13you'll be surprised.
49:15She's not Princess Sarah.
49:16Super fit.
49:17Muscular.
49:18Strong.
49:19Beautiful.
49:20She and her husband Vijay
49:22they work out together.
49:23That's good.
49:24But Camille,
49:25my trivia there
49:27Camille's being a Christian
49:28is so practical
49:29and so applied.
49:30Her Lord is so strong.
49:31Camille exudes confidence
49:34and radiates her relationship
49:36with Jesus Christ.
49:37She is salt and light.
49:38Wherever Camille is
49:39there's light.
49:40That's how Camille is.
49:42She doesn't even have to
49:43recite Bible verses
49:45but you can feel the Christianity
49:47with the way she is
49:48and the way she moves.
49:49I love Camille.
49:50Oh my.
49:51Do you know Camille and Ea's
49:52Mars Pomor?
49:53Because this was in a solid year
49:55where I was co-hosting with them.
49:57I met all the talents of GMA.
49:59The Lord put me in that show
50:01so I can meet all of you guys.
50:03And all the sparkle artists.
50:05All the entertainment artists.
50:07All of them.
50:08We have a lot of guests every day.
50:11I got to meet all of them
50:12crash course.
50:13But more than that
50:14I got to meet Camille and Ea
50:17on a very spiritual level.
50:20Before every show
50:22we would be in one dressing room
50:25and we'd share.
50:26It was a small group.
50:27We'd share about how Christ
50:29was good to us.
50:30Our challenges.
50:31We'd pray for each other.
50:33Every time.
50:36Every taping day was a small group.
50:38About one hour of small group.
50:40Just being in fellowship
50:41with a few of us.
50:42Ea's also Christian.
50:43Ea and Camille and me.
50:45It was a small group.
50:46And I miss that.
50:47It's one thing I miss
50:48about Mars Pomor.
50:49Oh how nice.
50:50Before you start taping
50:52you have a sort of sharing.
50:54A small community
50:56within the show.
50:58In all my shows in GMA
51:00we have this.
51:02It should be official.
51:04Before every show we pray.
51:06All of us.
51:07Everything's on hold.
51:08And then the prayer is on PA.
51:11At the desk.
51:12At the booth.
51:13At the studio.
51:14We all pray.
51:15A two minute prayer.
51:16To bless us and make us excellent.
51:18Before every show
51:19on TikTok
51:20we all pray.
51:21With TikTropa.
51:24With the studio guests as well.
51:26It's a way of being salt and light also.
51:28We were salt and light on that show.
51:30Might as well be salt and light
51:31for co-workers
51:32and to the live audience.
51:34We pray.
51:35That's so nice Koyekip.
51:36Speaking of TikTok
51:37your last host on this list.
51:40Pokwang.
51:41So passionate.
51:42When Mamang is happy
51:45she's happy.
51:46When she's angry
51:48she's angry.
51:49So if you know the way she is
51:52and then you love her.
51:53Mamang has no in-betweens.
51:55When she's passionate
51:57you know where she's coming from.
51:59But her comic timing
52:00Mamang is so good.
52:02Mamang will make you very good.
52:04Because when it comes to comedy
52:06you'll be good.
52:07There are comedians
52:08who don't give.
52:09Mamang.
52:10It's so nice to me
52:11in Repartee with Mamang
52:13because it flows.
52:14It's obvious that she's been a comedian for a long time.
52:17And comedy is very difficult.
52:18It's easy but comedy is hard.
52:20You have to be very smart
52:21and Mamang is very smart.
52:22And then number two
52:23Mamang's language of love is food.
52:25Every time
52:26we share a dressing room also.
52:28Mamang, me
52:29Arabia then
52:30and then Faye
52:31in Wales, Harley in the summer nights.
52:33We're in the same dressing room.
52:34But every lunchtime
52:35Mamang has food.
52:37Wow.
52:38Pork, galugong, kaldereta.
52:40Mamang's language of love
52:41is to make you happy.
52:42In ABS
52:43it was almost my dream
52:44to be a co-host of Mamang in any show.
52:46Because Kuya Willie
52:48whenever he's absent
52:49will make me some for him.
52:50So Wawa win.
52:51Wawa win.
52:52Like that.
52:53And then Mamang
52:54was Willie's co-host.
52:55This was in 2006.
52:57Mamang's co-host is so nice.
52:58She's funny.
52:59I hope one day
53:00I can be with her.
53:02That's my career then.
53:03In GMA
53:04we moved here together.
53:06And then
53:07she will be my co-host in Tiktok Rap.
53:10And Tiktok Rap has been
53:1115 years already.
53:12We've been together for 2 years.
53:13Yes.
53:14It's fast, right?
53:15Just like that.
53:16It's been 2 years already.
53:17Yes.
53:18And I've been in GMA for 3 years.
53:19Imagine.
53:20Wow.
53:21Yes.
53:22I moved here
53:233 years ago in August.
53:24That's fast, right?
53:25Kuya Kim.
53:26And you know what, Kuya Kim?
53:28Thank you as usual.
53:29Because you really are
53:31you have this wealth of knowledge
53:33that just flows from you.
53:35That you really know everything, Kuya Kim.
53:38You're welcome.
53:39But
53:41Oh my.
53:42So actually
53:43speaking of
53:44you have a lot of things you don't know
53:46and things you want to know.
53:59That's a good question.
54:00There's one thing that I don't know.
54:01I don't know when I will die.
54:03I don't know when I'm going to die.
54:04But I know for a fact
54:05that I'm going to die.
54:06And I also know for a fact
54:07that I know where I'm going to go
54:08when I die.
54:09And it's not because of my doing.
54:11It's not because of my good works.
54:13It's because of grace.
54:14And this is the grace
54:15that Jesus showed to me and gave me.
54:17And this grace is all I need.
54:19And when I die,
54:20I'm going to be with Him.
54:21Not because of my good works
54:22but because I've accepted Him as Lord and Savior.
54:24So yeah.
54:25I'd like to focus on that.
54:26Learning more about my Lord
54:27and learning more about
54:29falling in love with Him
54:30deeper and deeper and deeper
54:31and being salt and light.
54:32And
54:34having faith that is not empty.
54:36Having faith that's not based on just words
54:38and the Bible.
54:40But having faith that
54:41emanates with love
54:42and overflows with good works.
54:45Oh wow.
54:46Thank you so much for that, Kuya Kim.
54:48Hopefully, that's something
54:49that we can all do as well, right?
54:51And learn from.
54:52And share with others.
