00:00Classic Man vs. Christ-like Man
00:04Yesterday, we saw how manliness means endurance.
00:08Scripture leaves no doubt that this icon of classic masculinity is largely accurate.
00:14Literal or metaphorical scars, sweat, and struggle are part of being a man until Jesus comes.
00:21Some aspects of classic masculinity are damaging, dangerous, and contrary to what
00:27Scripture teaches. We need not defend these, Jesus certainly won't. Classic man dominates
00:35and subordinates. Children are afraid of this father and employees of this boss.
00:41He leads and accomplishes through fear and coercion. It is his way or the highway.
00:48On the contrary, Christ-like man submits to others. He's good at doing what God wants rather
00:55than forcing others to do what he wants. He is gentle but not weak. His temper has
01:01been tempered into patience. He can and does speak the truth, but he does not use the truth
01:07to terrify or intimidate. He can be comfortable in the kitchen and wears out the knees of his
01:13jeans as he plays with the kids. His leadership looks like service. Classic man is steeped in
01:20the sexuality of getting and taking. He looks to lust and always finds his eyes and heart
01:26objectifying women. Christ-like man loves more than lusts. He sees women made in God's image,
01:34whereas others see objects for their pleasure. He fights the battles of mind, word, and habit.
01:41Classic man is too proud to ask for directions and help. He's independent to a fault. He may
01:48even believe himself to be self-made. He thinks anyone willing to work as hard as he did would
01:54be where he is. Christ-like man knows that life is a gift and our greatest attainments are fueled
02:00by grace and the help of others. He has a long track record of asking for help as well as
02:06forgiveness. Every man I've met has been torn between these two pathways. My prayer is that
02:13we submit to Christ's work to make us Christ-like men and follow Christ's narrow way. The Lord
02:20watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
02:26Prayer, Father, help me to grow up to be like you. Give me the strength to flee temptation and
02:32choose the way of Christ today. Please show me where I'm a classic man instead of a Christ-like
02:37man. Amen. Reflection. Where are you like classic man? Where are you like Christ-like man?
02:46Is Christ speaking to you about any of these areas today?
