00:00For fans of the 2014 Time Loop blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow, the wait for a sequel has
00:05been long and full of disappointment.
00:07You're not mentally equipped to fight this thing, and you never will be.
00:11In 2022, it seemed like Warner Bros. might make a TV show that would serve as a sequel-slash-spinoff,
00:16but two years later, there still haven't been any updates.
00:20And though there have been plenty of rumors of a sequel movie in development, we've gone
00:23ten years now without any official announcement.
00:26Admittedly, it makes sense that Edge of Tomorrow would take a while to get a sequel greenlit.
00:30It wasn't a huge hit when it first came out.
00:33Thanks to its $175 million budget, its $370 million worldwide box office earnings were
00:39considered a disappointment.
00:41It also doesn't help that the two main leads, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, have been so busy
00:45over the past decade.
00:47Even if the studio knew exactly which direction they wanted to take the sequel, it would have
00:50been difficult to schedule both stars considering their work in the Mission Impossible and Quiet
00:55Place franchises.
00:56But in a recent interview with Total Film, director Doug Liman teased that a potential
01:00sequel is still possible.
01:02You're not going to believe what I'm about to tell you.
01:05No, I'm not.
01:06In fact, there's more behind-the-scenes interest in the idea than you might expect.
01:10Liman told the magazine,
01:11"...I do think there's probably no better compliment to a movie than people wanting for there to
01:15be a sequel.
01:17There's no better compliment than Warner Bros. constantly bringing up, will you go and make
01:20another one of these?"
01:22Even though Edge of Tomorrow wasn't an immediate box office hit, it's definitely built up a
01:26passionate audience through word of mouth over the years, to the point where it makes
01:30sense the execs at Warner Bros. might give it a second look.
01:33It helps that the creatives involved seem to have already put some thought into the
01:36sequel, with at least one draft of a script written by 2021 and in really great shape,
01:41at least according to Emily Blunt at the time.
01:44Even back in 2016, Liman was talking about his plans for a sequel, promising that it
01:48would, quote, "...revolutionize how people make sequels."
01:51He didn't say much more on the topic, but in a later Collider interview, he explained
01:55how he wanted to make the sequel even more character-focused, saying,
01:59"...I get sometimes the sequel just has to have more firepower or more explosions, but
02:03no visual effect is going to top what you're going to get from a great scene performed
02:07by Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt."
02:09When asked about what it would take to get the sequel greenlit, Liman said,
02:12"...If you can get Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt to commit to the movie, it's going to happen."
02:17It's a promising sentence, because in 2021, it sure seemed like Blunt would be interested.
02:21"...I would love it.
02:22Doug Liman would love it.
02:23Tom would love it.
02:24We'd all love to do it."
02:26Blunt told Howard Stern at the time that she feared the movie would be too expensive and
02:29scheduling would be tricky.
02:31She also cited the impact COVID-19 had on the industry.
02:34With Cruise finishing up his Mission Impossible series, and with Hollywood largely moving
02:38past the COVID chaos of 2021, the odds of a potential Edge of Tomorrow sequel feel higher
02:43than ever.
02:44Sure, there will likely be all sorts of difficulties with budgeting and scheduling, not to mention
02:49the challenge of finding a natural next step to the original's relatively self-contained
02:52time loop-slash-alien premise.
02:55But if there's a will, there's a way.
02:57And it definitely seems like there's a will among Liman, Cruise, and Blunt to take this
03:01project on.
