00:00Hey guys, Paul Burry, Family Friendly Gaming, and I'm doing MFG Sports on the USFL 2022.
00:19So it was really cool, the USFL came back, and one of the really wild and crazy things
00:24is in week three, Noah and I both picked teams.
00:28So Noah picked the Philadelphia Stars as his team to, you know, kind of support.
00:32I picked the Birmingham Stallions, and I'm wearing my shirt here.
00:35The two teams in the championship game was the Philadelphia Stars and the Birmingham
00:39Stallions, which was like wild and crazy.
00:41You know, we're like, whoa!
00:43The two teams we picked are playing the championship game.
00:45The championship game was a very good football game.
00:47It ended 33-30 with the Birmingham Stallions winning, and the Philadelphia Stars had the
00:53ball with like, you know, I think they threw an interception with like 16-17 seconds left
00:58in the game.
00:59So they were trying to go drive and get a field goal and tie the game.
01:02So it was pretty exciting, it was back and forth, and especially the second half was
01:08really like, wow, this is a good football game.
01:11Now, just because the championship game was good, doesn't mean the rest of the season
01:15was good.
01:16Quite honestly, there was a lot of sloppiness, and you gotta go, I kind of expect that sloppiness
01:25to happen, quite honestly, when this is the first time these players are playing in a
01:30league together.
01:31This is, you know, they played college ball and some people played pro ball, but they
01:36haven't played together, right?
01:37And so I was like impressed that there was not a whole lot, I mean, there wasn't a whole
01:42lot of like false starts, compared to like, say, the Seahawks in the NFL have a ton of
01:46false starts, you know, and I'm like, wow, you know, every game I watched of the USFL
01:52had less false starts than the Seahawks I've seen watching their game.
01:55So that was impressive, at least the false starts weren't happening.
01:58Now, there was other things, it seemed like pass interference, or, I don't know, unnecessary
02:07roughness, you know, things like that, that I think generally most NFL players are a little
02:14better disciplined, on most teams at least, than the USFL.
02:19So there's that.
02:20It was also really strange that the 10 games they had in the regular season, they played
02:26in Birmingham, so all the teams were staying there, so they all stayed in the same hotel,
02:31and the announcers talked about it, they got to know each other and everything, and I'm
02:35like, well that's kind of strange, that's a little weird, you know, because, so then
02:40it was like, Birmingham always had like a home game, but no one else really had a home
02:43game, even if they were the home team.
02:45They didn't have a lot of people in the stands, so that was kind of weird.
02:50Now they did go, the playoff games and the championship, the one playoff, or the two
02:54playoff games, there were four teams in the playoffs, the two playoff games and the championship
02:59game was held in Canton, Ohio, by the Football Hall of Fame.
03:05So that was interesting how they kind of did that, it was a little different.
03:11All in all, I thought it was decent, you know, I wasn't expecting them to be at the NFL level
03:19at all, and they weren't quite there.
03:23There were some wild and crazy games, I remember one early game we were watching, I think there
03:29was like three or four turnovers back-to-back, I mean it was just like, turnover, turnover,
03:34you know, it'd be like, interception, then the other team's offense goes out there, fumble,
03:39and the other team goes out there and they throw like another interception, there's another
03:43fumble, I mean it was just like, there was some wild and crazy games, that if you were
03:52cheering for a team, you're like, what is wrong with you?
03:56Now I did like what Birmingham did a lot of, they did a ton of running the ball, especially
04:02if they got a lead, if they got a lead, they would just pound the ball, pound the ball,
04:05pound the ball, pound the ball.
04:07Now the USFL had an interesting rule that was shown in the championship game.
04:10Instead of an on-site kick, you can take the ball at your own 33, you have a 4th and 12,
04:17you have one shot to get a first down, if you get a first down, you keep the ball.
04:22If you can't get a first down, then you give it to the other team.
04:26So you have to make it to like what, the 45 I think it was.
04:29I thought that was pretty clever, that was a different way of doing like an on-site kick.
04:34So instead of trying to do the on-site kick concept, they just said 4th and 12 when you're
04:37on 33, it is quite the gamble because then if you don't make it and they didn't, then
04:43you put the other team in field goal range immediately.
04:47So that was kind of different.
04:49I'm interested to see where the USFL goes in 2023, I thought they did a decent job and
04:55I said they did some different things, some interesting things.
04:57A shorter clock to make the game go faster, have a whole lot more action was kind of cool.
05:03I think it was, was it 35 seconds I think maybe?
05:07They had instead of like the 45 seconds, or 40 seconds in the NFL, whatever it was, I
05:10don't remember the exact number, don't quote me on that.
05:14It was less than the NFL.
05:17You have to be, I think it was either 30 or 35, so you had to be faster in the USFL, had
05:22to be a little quicker.
05:26It was neat to see some of the different players get an opportunity again and hear some of
05:31their stories when they would talk about them, the announcers.
05:35I really liked that running back for the Birmingham Stallions, he was really good, I thought he
05:41was impressive.
05:43The only thing that he didn't impress me with was in the championship game, he broke this
05:47really long run, but you could tell at the end he was kind of jogging, so he got wore
05:51out and tired, breaking tackles and getting there.
05:57You look at other NFL running backs, they break out, they're going to go all the way
06:02down for a touchdown.
06:03It's not always the case.
06:06Most of them though, most of them will get there and get in there.
06:09I think about like Marshawn Lynch, when he did that against the New Orleans Saints, Marshawn
06:14Lynch just after he broke a bunch of tackles, he just went on.
06:18He did it against the Arizona Cardinals too, so I think that guy may need to work on some
06:26of his stamina, possibly, he may have been tired at the end of the season, I don't know.
06:31There are some different teams, different cities, it's nice to see different cities
06:35like Birmingham get an opportunity to have a football team.
06:39I hope it does well.
06:40I'm also very curious to find out what happens with the XFL when they come back in 2023.
06:45So I'd like to thank everyone for watching, I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day.
06:48Bye.
