00:00This is the new Pixel 8a in the bay color, and this time around is extremely punchy.
00:08That is the bay from the 8 Pro, and check out the bay on the 8a.
00:14It's definitely more saturated, that's how I would describe it.
00:18This aesthetic really fits in with the 8 and 8 Pro, with the visor look along the top.
00:24It's actually feeling a little bit more premium with this metallic frame.
00:29This is quite a comfortable size to hold as well.
00:32I noticed that the ridge is not as substantial as it is on the Pro.
00:37So if I hold up the Pro here, I can sort of fit my finger underneath.
00:41It's a much taller ridge, more camera components here, more subtle.
00:45So if I place it down like this, now I can tell we've got more of a bezel on this unit
00:52compared to the Pro model or the standard Pixel 8.
00:55However, it's important to remember that this is an early first look, hands-on,
01:00so I can't go through everything with this device.
01:038, 8 Pro, and then the new 8a, which as you can tell, very similar in scale to the standard Pixel 8.
01:13Today's episode has been sponsored by EarFun and their affordable ANC wireless headphones
01:18that are actually going to remind you of some stuff that's a lot more expensive.
01:21With the code in the description, you can get these things for like 60 bucks.
01:24So definitely go check that link.
01:26You can see high-res audio, wireless audio as well, 80 hours of playtime on a battery,
01:31hybrid active noise cancellation, 40 millimeter drivers,
01:33unboxing experience, relatively elegant.
01:36You can see the whole thing folds up.
01:38Soft headband as well as ear cups.
01:40And if we look at the bottom side, you can see they charge up over USB-C, which is nice.
01:43And that Type-C port is capable of fast charge.
01:46So five minutes gives you five hours of battery life.
01:48Noise canceling, you got a strong ANC, comfort, wind canceling, ambient sound, or normal.
01:54Can you talk now, Mo?
01:55Testing, testing, one, two, three. Testing, testing, one, two, three.
01:58Zero. Louder, Mo!
01:59Testing, one, two, three.
02:01Zero!
02:02Here, you try.
02:04All right, go.
02:06You're not talking. There's no way you're talking.
02:08I'm talking now, I'm talking now. I'm talking now for real.
02:10Are you actually talking?
02:11I'm talking now for real.
02:13Okay, wow. I can't hear anything you're saying.
02:14Why do I talk loud like this?
02:16No, no way. No way.
02:18That was you yelling?
02:20You mess with me a lot, so I don't know if you're messing with me.
02:22I'm not, I'm not.
02:23Mo!
02:24Oh, you were yelling there.
02:25Mo!
02:26Oh, wow. These are really good.
02:27Google is saying it's the most durable A-series phone that they've made yet.
02:32It's IP67 protected, so it's going to do better with both water and dust,
02:37and the majority of the body is actually made of recycled aluminum.
02:41The display on this guy, 6.1 inches, 20 by 9 aspect ratio.
02:45The resolution, 2400 by 1080, and it does go up to 120 hertz on the refresh.
02:50It's got Gorilla Glass 3 on the front glass, and always on display,
02:54and it can do up to 1400 nits of HDR brightness, and up to 2000 nits for peak brightness.
03:00Now, they're stating it's got 24-hour battery life.
03:02Obviously, that depends on how you use your device,
03:05but the actual battery inside is listed at 4492 milliamp hours,
03:10and it also features fast charging, and it also features wireless charging,
03:14which is a nice little touch for an A-series device.
03:17You can get it in either 128 or 256 storage, and it has 8 gigs of RAM,
03:21and of course, it's also got Google's Tensor G3 chip.
03:24You're getting the Google One VPN built in at no extra cost,
03:28and Google is saying that you're going to get 7 years of OS security and feature drop updates.
03:35Of course, this is a major advantage that Google has.
03:37Often, new and experimental features will drop on the Pixel devices first,
03:42seeing as how they're the ones that developed the operating system.
03:45Now, the other nice thing is that even though this is Google's budget device,
03:50you're getting the same chip that you get in the premium devices,
03:52so you'd expect performance to be similar as well, at least when it comes to processing power.
03:59They give you the Tensor G3, even though you're not paying as much as you were for the 8 Pro, for example.
04:05It does feature stereo speakers as well, so it'll be tougher to cover up the sound,
04:11and as far as colors go, and as I mentioned earlier, this is called Bay,
04:15which is a little bit more saturated than the 8 Pro Bay,
04:18but there's also going to be Obsidian, Porcelain, and Aloe.
04:22Now, here's another bold statement.
04:24Inside of my notes that they sent over, they say that the Pixel 8a has the best camera under $500.
04:32So, two things there.
04:33That tells us that the device is going to be under $500, I presume USD,
04:37but it also, of course, tells us that they're very proud of their camera, both hardware and software.
04:42Now, let's talk a little bit more about those cameras.
04:43I can't show you samples from those cameras right now,
04:46but I can give you the specs.
04:4764-megapixel quad PD wide camera.
04:51It's got an f1.89 aperture, and it gives you an 80-degree field of view.
04:56The image sensor size is 1 over 1.73 inches.
05:00It's also got a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera.
05:03That's at f2.2, and that field of view is 120 degrees,
05:07and it's also got built-in lens correction, so you don't have too much of that warping or fisheye effect.
05:12And the main camera, the wide camera, has both optical and electronic image stabilization.
05:16On the front, we have a 13-megapixel selfie camera.
05:20That's a fixed focus, and it has a 96.5-degree ultra-wide field of view,
05:24so that should be enough, possibly fit a couple people into that selfie.
05:28Of course, you've got all of Google's software features inside of the camera app,
05:33including Magic Editor, Best Take, Magic Eraser, Photo On Blur.
05:37Like, this list has gotten longer and longer,
05:40but it is all gonna be baked into the 8a.
05:43When it comes to video recording, you're gonna be looking at 4K at 30 frames or 60 frames,
05:48and even the front camera can do 4K as well at 30 frames.
05:51You can do slow motion up to 240 FPS.
05:55There is video stabilization built in,
05:57but since this is a first-look, hands-on video, I can't test that out right now.
06:02However, I will, and I have a little bit of confidence
06:05because I've just had such good experiences with Pixel cameras in the past.
06:09Maybe this is the best camera under 500, we'll have to see.
06:12So, just handling the devices, I mean, this one feels incredibly similar to the Pixel 8.
06:18In the past, the A-series would have maybe a more plastic body,
06:24or maybe the build would be a giveaway that you were looking at a more budget model,
06:28but that's not really the case anymore.
06:30These two in hand feel very interchangeable, and that's a good thing,
06:34because people get to have a premium phone experience for under 500 bucks.
06:40Now, obviously, I've got to play with the phone a little bit more extensively,
06:44but I'm pretty confident with the Tensor chip in there
06:46and these bold statements about the camera performance
06:49that we're probably looking at something fairly competitive at that particular price point.
06:54It obviously comes out, like, months after the original, many months after the original,
06:59but they give you a lot of what you were getting in their premium or flagship device at this discount.
07:05Although, one thing I like about all the Pixel models
07:07is that because the bulge at least goes across the entire back of the phone,
07:12there's no wobble.
07:13Here's the pro, I mean, maybe if you were pushing in the very top,
07:17but pretty much anywhere you would tap on the phone,
07:21there's no wobble.
07:22They've gone for the matte finish on the back.
07:25Standard Pixel 8 has a glossy back on it,
07:28and then it has the brushed matte section around the camera component.
07:33This one has the matte finish for both.
07:36Matte finish on the visor bar and matte finish on the back of the device.
07:40This is probably my preference.
07:42It doesn't attract fingerprints really at all.
07:44Regardless of that, you can always go ahead and slap an ultra-thin later case on the brand-new Pixel 8a.
07:51I've actually got some of those here.
07:53Ooh, we've got lots of colors.
07:55This is a development sample, but these will be ready to go.
07:59Coffee color.
08:00I don't know about coffee with the blue.
08:02However, look at that.
08:03If you want the thinnest case to go with your brand-new Pixel 8a,
08:06you can definitely check out later cases.
08:08These will be live on the site.
08:09Dark blue with light blue?
08:10Look at this.
08:11Okay, we can do this as well.
08:13That's kind of cool.
08:14We can definitely go with that.
08:15So this just gives you a little bit of texture, a little bit of confidence.
08:18It won't slip out of your pocket as easily.
08:20However, interacting with the phone feels like you have nothing on.
08:24That's kind of the point with later case.
08:27If you're gonna pre-order the phone, if you like what you see,
08:29then you can also go ahead and order up the case.
08:32All the details for both the phone and the cases will be down in the description.
08:35The other thing to note, since we don't have any power adapters in the box anymore,
08:39you can also head over to our friends at Anker
08:42because they have the easiest, most portable little power bricks,
08:47and bigger ones if you want more power.
08:49But, like, look how portable that little thing is.
08:51This one's a no-brainer.
08:53You're gonna need a power brick anyway.
08:54All right, so how's that for a hands-on and first impression?
08:57That's everything Google told me I can do at this point.
09:00I'm gonna power this up and actually use it and see how it compares to the 8 Pro,
09:05specifically because the 8 Pro has actually been the device in my pocket.
09:09We'll see how interchangeable these two devices are,
09:11and if I feel like I'm missing out on anything,
09:13swapping over to this sub-$500 phone.
09:16What do you guys think? Let me know down in the comments.
09:18Is this a real contender in the sub-$500 smartphone wars?
09:24I think it might be, but you let me know.
