Residents flock to Coronation Park to enjoy Corby's second ever Pride event
Transcript
00:00It's a fantastic atmosphere. It has been from the outset. From the moment that we walked
00:14up to Corby Cube, as we turned the corner, all we could hear was whistles, music, people
00:17cheering and that really speaks for itself. That's the tone that's been set by the local
00:22people, by our community. That's what people have wanted and that atmosphere has followed
00:27us from the town down into Coronation Park and now with the entertainment we've got on.
00:31Last year was a real success. People had said to us that they really wanted to see another
00:36Pride and we've been able to deliver that again this year, which is brilliant. We've
00:40had so much investment, so much support from the local community, which has been fantastic.
00:45Without that support we wouldn't have been able to deliver what we've done today. Our
00:48officers have worked extremely hard behind the scenes for a number of months. We've been
00:52hoping and praying for good weather and thankfully everything's come into play and it's been
00:55a great day so far. The response from the parade was amazing. People all through the
01:01town, colours and bright and dancing and cheering. It was fantastic and now the park is full.
01:07The response from last year was very much that they wanted to see another Pride. People
01:10had said to us that they really hoped to see another Pride, but we didn't take that for
01:14granted. We needed to speak to people within the community. We needed to gain that support
01:19from businesses and from organisations. By being able to do that, that meant we could
01:24definitely bring another Pride to Corby. We've got more going on. We've got the park
01:29spread out more. Two stages now this year instead of one, which just means that people
01:34have got a bigger range of entertainment that they can engage in, but also more stalls,
01:38more food and drink, more information and actually more activities all in all. It's
01:44all about if the community want it, if we've got that investment, but also if we've got
01:48the support from the community, if that's what people want to see, then ultimately we
01:53would aim to hopefully be able to deliver that.
01:55Do you know what? It's an insightful role being able to do it, working really closely
02:00with the officers who are commissioning all of the work that's happening behind the scenes,
02:05but speaking to people who want to be part of this and actually helping to shape the
02:11event based on what people are hoping for. People from afar have said to us that Corby
02:16has been such a roaring success last year and building up to that again this year. The
02:21response that they've seen has been really overwhelming in comparison to other areas,
02:24so we feel really proud to think that that's the case.
02:27I think we're always going to have different thoughts about these things, but ultimately
02:31we're listening to what people say. Pride is something that people want to be proud
02:36about and feel comfortable to be able to be themselves in their local community. We want
02:41everybody to feel at this event that they are welcome. We've got people here from all
02:45walks of life, different ages, families, people, anybody is welcome to today. I think
02:51if people from today's event are sharing with us that they want to see it again and we can
02:56get that support from the local community, then it's definitely something that we'd want
02:59to look at.
