00:00They took the alien's body and they buried him at the cemetery and gave him a Christian burial.
00:05Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the top 20 mysteries you've never heard of.
00:11The tracks even extend to rooftops, and a garden secluded behind walls 14 feet high.
00:17And all the indications are that it goes back to the end of the last ice age, and is probably around 11,000 to 12,000 years old.
00:26Two jockeys were walking their horses along the beach, and they saw what looked to be a body of a man.
00:31For this list, we're looking at the craziest and most obscure unsolved mysteries.
00:36Think you know some crazier mysteries that we've never heard of? Let us know in the comments below.
00:48What do all of these locations have in common?
00:51In all of these cities and many more, embedded in seemingly random streets, are linoleum tiles containing cryptic messages about death.
00:59New York, D.C., Boston, the person who made them was a complete mystery.
01:05The phrase, Resurrect Dead on Planet Jupiter is present on many of the tiles, as well as references to Stanley Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey.
01:14A couple of different theories have been put forth as to the identity of the tiler, including a 2011 documentary.
01:20But no proof or admission from the tiler has confirmed any of them.
01:24If it were one person, why go through the trouble of traveling around the world?
01:42What's in a name?
01:43Well, judging by the spooky phenomena that occurs in the Devil's Promenade west of Hornet, Missouri, sometimes a lot.
01:50Also known as the Hollis Light, the spook light is a ball or group of lights that's been sighted numerous times around the border between Missouri and Oklahoma.
01:59People have proposed explanations that range from headlights on Route 66, to atmospheric gases, to the spirits of two Quapaw lovers who ran away together.
02:13Oh yeah, and aliens, obviously.
02:16Over the years, a few investigators have laid out evidence for the headlight's explanation.
02:21But there are still true believers who think there must be something more to the tale.
02:29Any cars coming all the way down this long hill to this point could be the ambience of the spook light.
02:41Don't bring your dogs near this next mystery.
02:44The Overtoun Bridge in Scotland is a seemingly normal bridge like any other,
02:48except for the staggering amount of dogs that have jumped to their deaths from the structure.
02:53They just looked up and leapt right over the bridge.
02:56Local tabloids have estimated that around 600 dogs have leaped off this bridge, seemingly for no reason.
03:02I started shouting to David, Sophie's jumped off the bridge, she's jumped off the bridge.
03:08It just happened so fast, seconds.
03:12Residents tell of their dogs pausing on the bridge as if possessed before unexpectedly jumping.
03:17Some dogs have reportedly jumped twice.
03:19Paranormal theories abound, including spirits and ghosts,
03:23while the most scientific explanation is that the dogs are smelling wildlife below.
03:27They've no concept of what's on the other side. They can't see the drop.
03:31But if that's the case, why this bridge in particular?
03:38One winter morning in 1855, residents of Devon, England woke to find an eerie phenomenon.
03:44Hoof prints, some four inches long, were found across 40 to 100 miles of snow,
03:49as well as on roofs, walls, and even in drain pipes.
03:53Residents might have been able to write the markings off as belonging to a donkey or another animal,
03:57except they appeared in a variety of unreachable places.
04:00Even stranger, they were all in a single line instead of alternating left and right.
04:05No animal walks in such a unique way.
04:08To this day, no satisfactory theory exists, but residents think it was Satan himself.
04:1416. The Disappearance of Benjamin Bathurst
04:18Try rationalizing this one.
04:20Benjamin Bathurst was a British diplomat in the 19th century.
04:23He was traveling through Germany in November 1809 with his aide Herr Krause
04:27when something strange happened.
04:29They were walking to the carriage together, but when Krause got in,
04:32he suddenly couldn't find Bathurst.
04:34Investigations uncovered his valuable fur coat in an outhouse
04:38and pantaloons miles away in the woods.
04:40His wife spent a fortune trying to find him, but to no avail.
04:45It's thought he was murdered and a possible skeleton was found many years later.
04:49Bathurst was known to carry pistols.
04:51How could no one have seen or heard him being taken?
04:5515. The Phantom Barber
04:57There was more to worry about than World War II
04:59in the small town of Pascagoula, Mississippi in 1942.
05:03A mysterious person dressed in white began sneaking into homes
05:06and cutting off locks of people's hair in the middle of the night.
05:09This phantom seemed to prefer blonde hair and he was rarely seen in the act.
05:14Though his intrusions were usually non-violent,
05:17police think he used chloroform to knock out a victim
05:20and on one occasion, he beat a couple unconscious with an iron bar.
05:24A suspect was later arrested and then released.
05:27No definitive identity has ever been given for this ghastly figure.
05:3214. The Pollock Twins
05:34Sisters Joanna and Jacqueline Pollock were 11 and 6 years old respectively
05:38when they were killed in a car accident.
05:40The devastated parents decided to have another child and gave birth to twins,
05:44Jillian and Jennifer.
05:46These twins shared so many similarities with the deceased sisters,
05:49including birthmarks, behaviors and preferences,
05:52as well as memories from before the accident,
05:54that they seem to be perfect reincarnations.
05:57Many simply dismiss the case as a hoax,
05:59but both parents were convinced that these twins were their original daughters.
06:04The case is often touted as evidence of true resurrection.
06:0813. Sleeping Sickness
06:11This is a scary one.
06:12A sickness began sweeping through the world shortly after World War I
06:16and it would become so widespread it became an epidemic.
06:19It was called lethargic encephalitis
06:22and it put people in a sort of coma where they were conscious
06:25but unable to speak or move, like living statues.
06:29Close to a million people died
06:31and millions more were helplessly trapped in their bodies.
06:35No scientist to this day can explain what this sickness was or how it spread
06:39and it is one of the biggest medical mysteries in history.
06:4312. The Aurora Incident
06:45We've all heard of Roswell,
06:47but have you heard of the alien shipwreck in Aurora, Texas?
06:50In 1897, an airship that looked like a cigar
06:54allegedly collided with a windmill and exploded.
06:57People reported seeing a non-human pilot
06:59and papers with an unrecognizable language that resembled hieroglyphics.
07:03The pilot was supposedly buried, but the grave marker disappeared.
07:07The cemetery declined a request from the Mutual UFO Network to exhume the site.
07:11The dear lord is powerful enough
07:14that if he wanted to create another universe and other people, he could have done it.
07:18Conspiracy theorists believe the wreckage was confiscated by the military.
07:22So all that's left are accounts and memories.
07:25Was this a misconstrued event or a real alien shipwreck?
07:29He's coming!
07:3411. The Big Grey Man
07:36The Big Grey Man, known as Amfer Leamur in Scottish Gaelic, is not actually a man.
07:42It's said to be a creature or spirit living in the isolated Cairngorms Mountains in Scotland.
07:47Various accounts of the creature tell of a tall specter shrouded in mist
07:50that inflicts terrible fear and panic in the victims.
07:54Nearly all accounts report footsteps following them in the gravel
07:57before they encounter the entity.
08:04Another explanation that's been proposed is that it's a brocken specter,
08:08where the user's shadow is enlarged on a cloud bank.
08:11We sure hope so.
08:1610. The Flannan Isles Lighthouse
08:19In December of 1900, three lighthouse keepers mysteriously vanished without a trace
08:24on the uninhabited island of Eilean Mor.
08:26When people went to check on them, they found a spare oilskin and unmade beds,
08:31suggesting something suddenly aroused them from their sleep.
08:34The mechanical clocks had not been wound for some time either.
08:37No evidence of foul play was found, and the bodies were never seen again.
08:41The leading theory is that waves pulled them into the Atlantic Ocean,
08:45but it's forbidden to leave the lighthouse unmanned.
08:47So why did they all venture outside?
08:50And why did one leave his oilskin suit?
08:53It may forever be a mystery.
08:559. The Dancing Plague of 1518
08:59In 1518 in the Holy Roman Empire,
09:01the city of Strasbourg was reportedly struck with one of the strangest plagues in history,
09:06an inability to stop dancing.
09:08What started with one woman busting some moves
09:11somehow turned into mass hysteria that lasted for days.
09:14Residents found themselves unable to stop,
09:17and some sources report that many danced themselves to death.
09:20To this day, no one knows what really happened.
09:23Some believe the residents had ingested ergot, a hallucinogenic fungi,
09:27while others point to stress-induced hysteria.
09:30Oddly enough, this plague also reportedly occurred in Switzerland,
09:34Holland, and Germany, though not to the same extent.
09:388. Taman Shud
09:40This is the sort of puzzle that keeps you up at night.
09:42In 1948, an unidentified dead body washed ashore in South Australia.
09:47What ensued was a wild scavenger hunt with dead ends everywhere.
09:52In the man's pocket was a torn piece of paper that read Taman Shud,
09:55which is Persian for finished.
09:57The paper led them to the book it was torn from, the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam,
10:01along with a phone number and cryptic message that has yet to be decoded.
10:05It was 1948-49, so they were convinced perhaps he was a communist spy or a Russian spy.
10:11But no one ever came forward to claim this man.
10:13The number was of a local nurse, who denied knowing the dead man.
10:17Investigators discovered a discarded suitcase that they believe belonged to the body,
10:21but it had a fake name.
10:23One of Australia's biggest mysteries is still an open case.
10:27And even though that picture that we saw was widely distributed around the world,
10:30his fingerprints were sent to Scotland Yard, the FBI, nobody knew who this guy was.
10:367. Bimini Road
10:38This strange rock formation is located in the Bahamas.
10:41The underwater path stretches for exactly half a mile before ending abruptly.
10:46The limestone blocks seem to have been precisely cut and stacked,
10:49leading some to claim that it must have been human-made.
10:52And all the indications are that it goes back to the end of the last ice age,
10:57and is probably around 11,000 to 12,000 years old.
11:01What makes this even stranger is that some 30 years before divers discovered it,
11:05modern prophet Edgar Cayce said that the road leading to the lost city of Atlantis was near Bimini.
11:11Geologists argue that this is a naturally occurring formation,
11:14but there are still believers who argue that it must have been built by an ancient civilization.
11:196. The Disappearance of the USS Cyclops
11:22It's one thing when a small dinghy vanishes,
11:24but how does the largest ship in the Navy suddenly disappear?
11:28That's what happened in 1918 when the USS Cyclops was making a trip to Baltimore.
11:33The last message sent from the ship is simple,
11:35quote,
11:36Weather fair, all well.
11:38Normally, when ships disappear, some remnant or flotsam of the vessel washes ashore,
11:43but nothing whatsoever has been found of the Cyclops.
11:46Even more eerily, it vanished within the infamous Bermuda Triangle.
11:51No enemy ships were ever reported in the region.
11:54The Navy has called it one of the most confusing mysteries in its history.
11:585. The Ghost Blimp
12:00Picture it, 1942 off the coast of California.
12:04Two U.S. Navy pilots command the Navy's L-8 Blimp
12:07in search of Japanese submarines in waters not so far from San Francisco.
12:21They radio flight control about an oil slick on the water,
12:29and are never heard from again.
12:31A few hours later, that very same L-8 Blimp crashes into a cliff,
12:35with no one on board.
12:37Everything in or about the craft was working normally,
12:40the throttles were idle, and more eerily,
12:43the parachutes and lifeboat were still on board.
12:45To this day, no one knows what happened,
12:48and the personnel involved were never found.
12:514. The Bay of Jars
12:53Brazil's Guanabara Bay contains a lot of trash,
12:56but the trash that people cannot explain
12:58is the 200 or so Roman ceramic jars found submerged in an underwater field,
13:03an underwater field the size of three tennis courts.
13:06According to experts, these jars trace back to the 3rd century.
13:10However, European explorers didn't even reach Brazil until 1500,
13:14and the Romans themselves had little to no incentive to travel that far out.
13:18Thus, it's a complete mystery why their artifacts would be found there.
13:22Meanwhile, Brazil closed off the area in 1983,
13:25so it's unlikely an answer will ever be found.
13:283. The Voynich Manuscript
13:30If you haven't heard of this one, strap in.
13:33The Voynich Manuscript is a mysterious 250-page book
13:37written in a completely unknown language,
13:39and containing odd, otherworldly sketches.
13:48Or that an alien wrote it while being held captive in a monastery.
13:53Or that Leonardo da Vinci wrote it as a child.
13:56Its origin is unable to be fully traced,
13:58so no one knows who created it, let alone why,
14:01but carbon dating puts it in the early 15th century.
14:04Cryptologists say the writing has all the characteristics of a real language,
14:08just one that no one's ever seen before.
14:10What makes it seem real is that in actual languages,
14:14letters and groups of letters appear with consistent frequencies,
14:17and the language in the Voynich Manuscript
14:19has patterns you wouldn't find from a random letter generator.
14:23So far, no one has been able to decode the script it's written in,
14:26despite being worked on by professional codebreakers
14:29from both World War I and World War II.
14:32What strange message lies inside this uncrackable book?
14:35The truth is, after decades of dedicated study to try and solve the mystery,
14:40this strange book seems likely to remain
14:43one of our most enduring historical codes to crack.
14:472. The Max Headroom Hijack
14:49In 1987, two television stations in Chicago were hijacked
14:53in perhaps the most surreal act of video piracy ever recorded.
15:07Both instances featured an unidentified man
15:10dressed as obscure TV personality Max Headroom
15:13dancing to distorted audio.
15:15The second video, significantly longer,
15:17saw the man rambling incoherently in a distorted voice
15:20and being swatted on the behind by an off-screen accomplice.
15:39The segments lasted no more than a couple of minutes,
15:41but have gone down as among the most notorious incidents in television history.
15:45No one has ever identified who pulled it off or even why.
15:49We can only hope someone comes forward after all this time to put an end to this mystery.

16:201. The Green Children of Woolpit
16:22According to legend, in the 12th century,
16:25two children were found in the village of Woolpit, England.
16:28Their skin was green, they spoke gibberish, and they only ate broad beans.
16:33Eventually, they learned to eat normal food and speak English,
16:36and they claimed they were from a different world where there was no sun.
16:39The boy soon died of a mysterious illness, but the girl lived on.
16:44A few accounts from around the same time reference the tale.
16:47One leading theory proposes that the children were lost and malnourished
16:50Flemish immigrants from another town in Suffolk.
16:53Others claim they were extraterrestrials, or from inside the Earth itself.
16:58Do you agree with our picks?
