00:00Senator R.A. Linggiswaran has called for two more suits by doctors against the Malaysian
00:08Medical Council to be postponed, following a High Court decision to postpone a suit by
00:13six University Science Malaysia graduates.
00:17One suit involves four parallel pathway cardiothoracic surgeons, and the other involves a Singapore-based
00:23neurosurgeon.
00:25Both suits are pending cases concerning the recognition of specialist qualifications.
00:30The MMC was sued earlier this year by several doctors for rejecting their applications to
00:35be listed in the National Specialist Register.
00:38MMC's lawyer, Jessica Ram Binwani, said the High Court had agreed on Thursday to her request
00:44to postpone the hearing of the case involving the six graduates, pending amendments to the
00:49law.
00:50The case had been set for hearing on August 21.
00:53However, amendments to the Medical Act are expected to be tabled at the Dewan Rakyat
00:57at its next sitting, from June 24 to July 18.
01:01Linggiswaran said he was informed that the health ministry met several related groups
01:06to discuss amendments to the Act pertaining to the recognition of all postgraduate qualifications.
01:12As the amendments are expected to include the recognition of all specialists for listing
01:16on the Register, he said it is best that no decisions be made now, as it may complicate
01:21matters.
