00:00Bringing Wolverine back from the dead, pitching a new alien movie to the original creator,
00:05and finding out exactly why Earth got so dang quiet all of a sudden.
00:09If you're a sci-fi fan, you've got a lot to look forward to with these films in 2024.
00:15The first new Francis Ford Coppola film since 2011, Megalopolis is a gigantically ambitious
00:21sci-fi epic that will mark its director's first incursion into the genre.
00:25Set in a New York-esque city named New Rome, Megalopolis is a fable about the downfall
00:30of empires, chronicling the clash of ideologies that occurs when an accident forces the city
00:35to rebuild itself.
00:36Adam Driver plays the protagonist, architect and artist Cesar Catalina, who dreams of employing
00:41technology in service of a sustainable utopian future for New Rome.
00:46His nemesis, Mayor Franklin Cicero, played by Giancarlo Esposito, wants to reinforce
00:50the greedy and exploitative status quo.
00:53The conflict is reflected in the soul of Franklin's daughter Julia, who finds herself
00:57torn between loyalty to her father and love for Cesar as she struggles to find her place
01:02in the world.
01:03A passion project decades in the making, Megalopolis didn't get off the ground until Coppola made
01:08the decision to self-finance it, officially beginning development in 2019.
01:13Though it made its debut at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, it still has no official U.S.
01:18release.
01:19That hasn't stopped it from already being one of the most talked-about cinematic events
01:22of the year.
01:23After John Krasinski's original 2018 film A Quiet Place made bank with its story of
01:28two parents trying desperately to protect their kids from a sound-sensitive alien species
01:33that has taken over planet Earth, the 2020 sequel achieved similar figures, even as it
01:37came out mid-pandemic.
01:39The potential for a full-blown franchise was clearly there, and sure enough, even before
01:44A Quiet Place Part III had been officially set to sneak into theaters in 2025, a spinoff
01:49film was already in development.
01:51Now following a behind-the-scenes overhaul that saw original director Jeff Nichols be
01:55replaced by pig breakout helmer Michael Cernosky, A Quiet Place Day One is finally coming.
02:01Starring Lupita Nyong'o, Day One will go all the way back to New York City on the day
02:05the alien invasion began.
02:07Joseph Quinn, Jaiman Hanzo, and Alex Wolff also star as fellow survivors who band together
02:12with Nyong'o's character, and then plot an escape course from the city as the U.S.
02:16government abandons them to their own devices.
02:21We're on our own.
02:27A Quiet Place Day One tiptoes silently into multiplexes on June 28.
02:33The filmmaker tackling the daunting challenge of making an actually good alien sequel this
02:37time will be Uruguayan writer-director Fede Alvarez.
02:41A big name in the current horror landscape, Alvarez is known for genre hits like Don't
02:45Breathe and the 2013 Evil Dead, as well as the less memorable 2018 Millennium Series
02:51entry The Girl on the Spider's Web.
02:54Alien Romulus was notoriously willed into being after Fede Alvarez made a pitch to Ridley
02:58Scott himself that kept Scott thinking for years afterwards.
03:02Although it's coming out this summer, the only plot information available reveals that
03:06the film will follow a new group of space colonists who come into contact with the xenomorphs.
03:11We do know that Romulus will star Kaylee Spaney, who has confirmed that the film is temporally
03:15set between Alien and Aliens.
03:18We also know that Alvarez worked with Scott and James Cameron to maintain franchise continuity.
03:23Alien Romulus tears into theaters on August 16.
03:27How's This for Cinematic Mad Libs?
03:30A Borderlands film directed by Eli Roth, starring Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Hart,
03:36and Gina Gershon.
03:37If it sounds like a fever dream, well, it might very well turn out to be one.
03:41But it's happening, and it's coming out this summer.
03:44Borderlands appears to contain few of the aesthetic hallmarks that Roth developed over
03:48the course of his career.
03:49Instead, the trailer angles for the post-Guardians of the Galaxy eccentric sci-fi comedy market,
03:54emphasizing the humor and the colorful mayhem of the Borderlands universe as recreated in
03:59live action.
04:00God, I hate this planet.
04:02It remains to be seen just how faithful Borderlands will be to either the story or the spirit
04:07of the massively popular RPG looter-shooter game series.
04:11But we'll find out when the film releases August 9.
04:14If the Transformers films still have a legion of fans around the world, even after years
04:18and years of one critically panned film after another, it's for two reasons.
04:22First, there will always be reverence and nostalgia for the sprawling mythology of the
04:26original animated TV series.
04:28Second, the Transformers movies are nothing if not unique in their vision of hectic, hard-edged,
04:34metal-clanging mecha action.
04:36This time around, human characters will be ditched altogether, and the film will travel
04:39to the Transformers native planet of Cybertron to tell the story of how former best friends
04:44Orion Pax and D-16 became Optimus Prime and Megatron.
04:49Naturally, this also means that the film will be the first entry in Paramount's Transformers
04:53series to be 100% animated, with Oscar-winning Toy Story 4 helmer Josh Cooley giving the
04:58robots in disguise a Spider-Verse-esque makeover.
05:02Aside from the slate-cleaning premise, the starry voice cast features Chris Hemsworth
05:06and Brian Tyree Henry as Optimus Prime and Megatron.
05:10Look for Transformers 1 at the start of fall movie season on September 20th.
05:15In addition to being acclaimed by critics and fans alike, Logan achieved unexpected
05:19dramatic sturdiness and netted it the first-ever screenwriting Oscar nomination for a superhero
05:24movie.
05:25But if there's one thing Deadpool is going to do, it's mess with the established order.
05:30In Wade Wilson's defense, he's not the one who initiates the mayhem this time.
05:35The plot of Deadpool and Wolverine begins with Wilson, aka Deadpool, having settled
05:39into a stable and peaceful life surrounded by loving friends and family, only to get
05:44yanked out of it by the Time Variance Authority, or TVA.
05:47In a typically meta-flight of fancy for the franchise, the TVA effectively offers Deadpool
05:52the chance to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe and become one of its world-saving heroes.
05:57Tasked with defeating Charles Xavier's evil twin sister, Cassandra Nova, Deadpool enlists
06:02the help of an alternate version of Wolverine from a universe in which he failed the world,
06:06and the two super-powered mavericks form an unlikely alliance.
06:10Arriving July 26th, Deadpool and Wolverine is the first Deadpool film to be distributed
06:15by Disney following its acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
06:19And as expected, there are plenty of digs at the new parent company peppered throughout
06:22the trailers.
06:23We should set the table correctly.
06:25We're mostly going to make enemies with Disney.
06:28Huh, Paul Rudd finally aged.
06:32Swedish filmmaker Mikael Hofström has directed several notable Hollywood genre films, including
06:36the prison break film Escape Plan, the religious thriller The Right, and cult favorite supernatural
06:41horror 1408.
06:44He's also dabbled in science fiction before, directing the 2021 Netflix film Outside the Wire.
06:50In 2024, Hofström will bring his sci-fi chops and his command of psychological suspense
06:55together in Slingshot, his first venture into outer space.
06:59Starring Casey Affleck, Slingshot is an original film written by R. Scott Adams and Nathan
07:04Parker, the latter of whom also wrote the screenplay for 2009's Moon.
07:09We know that the plot follows Affleck, an astronaut aboard an interplanetary expedition
07:13to the Saturn moon of Titan, that may or may not be fatally endangered as he begins to
07:18lose his grip on reality.
07:20Although Slingshot has been slated by Bleaker Street for an August 23 release, it has yet
07:24to release a trailer.
07:26While David Cronenberg's greatest achievements have come in the horror genre, classics like
07:30Videodrome and The Fly are also densely mapped, imaginatively realized sci-fi visions.
07:35In 2024, following his 2022 surgery-themed freakout Crimes of the Future, Cronenberg
07:41will once again use sci-fi as a window into the hidden horrors of 21st century life.
07:46The Shrouds represents one of Cronenberg's most personal and emotionally charged feature
07:50films yet and includes autobiographical elements.
07:54The concept is a heady one.
07:55A businessman deep in mourning following the loss of his wife, invents a new technology
08:00that allows people to monitor the bodies of their deceased loved ones in their graves.
08:04However, he finds himself caught in a dark mystery when several graves are desecrated,
08:09including his wife's.
08:11The Shrouds was played in competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and has already
08:15been set for a French theatrical release in September, but it does not yet have a North
08:19American release date.
08:21The newest film to employ Lupita Nyong'o's voice acting chops will be The Wild Robot.
08:25It's an adaptation of the eponymous children's picture book series by Peter Brown and will
08:30find Nyong'o playing Razum Unit 7134, or Raz for short.
08:35Raz is a robot who wakes up on an uninhabited island and must find a way to fend for herself
08:39in the wilderness.
08:41Raz gradually befriends the island's animals and develops a sense of place and purpose
08:45in her life as a castaway.
08:47It's a momentous film for DreamWorks, and not just because it will be the studio's first
08:51film since 2013's The Croods to be directed by the great Chris Sanders of Lilo & Stitch
08:56and How to Train Your Dragon fame.
08:58It's also the last DreamWorks animation film to have been produced completely in-house,
09:02before the studio announced the decision to outsource some of its animation to third-party
09:06studios in 2023.
09:08The Wild Robot flocks to theaters on September 27th.
09:13Sony's attempt to build a Spider-Man-based cinematic universe out of supporting and side
09:16characters from Spidey comics has mostly been a resounding failure so far.
09:21However, both 2018's Venom and 2021's Venom Let There Be Carnage proved unexpectedly successful.
09:28The series has so far accomplished this by striking a tone somewhere between brooding
09:32seriousness, campiness, absolutely unhinged lunacy, and even some thinly-veiled homoeroticism.
09:38Hello, gorgeous.
09:39Sorry, no, not my type.
09:42I am out of the Eddie closet!
09:46Now the trilogy is coming to a close with Venom The Last Dance.
09:50Perhaps the most interesting information about The Last Dance is that it will be the directorial
09:54debut of Kelly Marcel, who previously co-wrote and executive produced Venom, and served as
09:59producer and sole screenwriter on Let There Be Carnage.
10:02Marcel wrote the screenplay by herself this time around, from a story co-written with
10:06Tom Hardy.
10:07As such, Venom The Last Dance is the first project in the Venom series to be a full-blown
10:12auteurist vision from a writer-director.
10:14The Last Dance will be waltzing into theaters on October 25th.
10:19Joshua Oppenheimer became one of the world's best-known documentary filmmakers when he
10:23made both The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence.
10:26The films were two very different yet equally horrifying exposés on the Indonesian communist
10:31purge of 1965-1966 and its lingering effects on Indonesian society.
10:37For his third feature and first fiction film, Oppenheimer will be going in a very different
10:41direction, as the end will be a Golden Age-inspired musical.
10:46But in keeping with the dissonant revelatory spirit of The Act of Killing, Oppenheimer
10:50will once again be putting fluffy Hollywoodian form in service of harrowing political content.
10:55The films starring Tilda Swinton, George MacKay, Moses Ingram, and Michael Shannon will tell
11:00the story of the Earth's last remaining family.
11:03The surviving group is the clan of an oil tycoon, who played a direct part in destroying
11:07the planet.
11:08The family then sequestered themselves to a luxurious underground bunker, where they've
11:12been living for 20 years.
11:14The musical numbers will offset the film's raw realism, acting as an expression of the
11:19family's willful denial about the damage they've done.
11:21The post-apocalyptic sci-fi film will come out on an as-yet-unspecified 2024 date.
11:28After directing one of the highest-grossing films of all time with Avengers Endgame, Anthony
11:32and Joe Russo reinvented themselves as helmers of slick, streaming-bound genre flicks.
11:38First there was the critically-bashed 2021 Tom Holland vehicle, Cherry, and then what
11:432022 somewhat better received, The Gray Man.
11:46Now with The Electric State, the brothers are returning to the sci-fi genre that they've
11:51proven they can excel at with their Avengers films.
11:54Scripted by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, The Electric State adapts the eponymous
11:58illustrated novel by Simon Stalinok about a teenage girl traveling through an America
12:03ravaged by a human-robot civil war in search of her missing younger brother.
12:08Millie Bobby Brown leads the film, which will debut sometime in 2024 as a Netflix original.
