00:00Thank you, Madam Ranking Member, Madam Chair, Senator and two great colleagues.
00:06I want to begin by thanking President Biden.
00:09The fact that he issued, is planning on issuing this executive order, I think we cannot understate
00:18the incredible impact this will have on hundreds of thousands of American families.
00:26The couples and their children will have a shot that they deserve.
00:34I think it is so important also to recognize that many of the obstacles to helping these
00:41families have come from really draconian provisions in prior pieces of legislation, and those
00:49provisions have created grave injustices.
00:52I think it's also really important to recognize that Democrats have been working, along with
01:00the President, to create additional legal pathways and fix what is a very broken immigration
01:06system.
01:07But another obstacle, unfortunately, has been our colleagues on the other side of the aisle.
01:13Most Americans understand that fixing the immigration system isn't just the most humane
01:19thing to do, but that it's also economically advantageous to do.
01:25And the President recognizes this, and I am so proud, and in fact, he has mentioned to
01:30me that my bill, the American Families United Act, served as part of the inspiration for
01:37the executive order that is providing an opportunity for undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens.
01:45I'd like to thank all of my co-sponsors of the American Families United Act.
01:50These are things we can and should do legislatively, but we need partners in Congress who are willing
01:57to recognize that we can do two things at once.
02:01We can work together to have secure borders.
02:05We all want that, but we can also work together to create legal pathways, which frankly is
02:12the best way to secure borders, by giving people legal pathways so that they can come
02:19and be a part of our country in a way that we know helps make us stronger, better, and
02:24is really in our best interest.
02:27I'm proud of the President for not just recognizing that these legal pathways are good for our
02:34country, but in addition to what he's done today for American families and for DREAMers,
02:40I think it's important for us to emphasize as well, he has created other legal pathways
02:45through the CBP One app, he's created legal pathways through the CHNB program, but we
02:52do need Congress to do its job.
02:54We need Republicans to come to the table.
02:57We need them to recognize that this is what the American public wants.
03:01With that, it's my honor to introduce my colleague and friend from New York, Adriano Espaillat.
