00:00Here is the biggest city in the world, Macao.
00:02Located at about 65 km from Hong Kong, it is one of the two special administrative areas of China,
00:07which means that it works semi-autonomously except in terms of defense and foreign policy,
00:11which are managed by the Chinese central government.
00:13Macao is much smaller than Hong Kong, but houses 700,000 people in this area,
00:17making it one of the most densely populated regions in the world.
00:19In comparison, Hong Kong is much larger and has millions of inhabitants.
00:22It is true that Las Vegas receives millions more visitors per year than Macao,
00:25but the way each city earns its money is a little different.
00:28Proportionally, a smaller part of Las Vegas' revenue comes from money games,
00:31which generally amounts to about $12 billion per year in Las Vegas, or at least before the pandemic.
00:35Macao, on the other hand, earns between $20 and $40 billion per year thanks to money games.
00:39Macao is also interesting because of its recent history with Portugal,
00:42which gave this colony to China only in 1999, a few years after Hong Kong.
00:46The Portuguese influence is still very strong in this city,
00:48and Portuguese is still spoken in many neighborhoods.
00:50An example of this influence is the maintenance of its own currency,
00:53the pataca, introduced during the colonial era and still in use today,
00:56underlining the Portuguese cultural and economic heritage of Macao.
