00:00Spurred by the success of its inaugural Powering the Future School Engagement series, leading
00:07utility company Tenaga National Berhad, or TNB, has decided to expand the campaign to
00:12more schools nationwide, as it aims to educate more young people on the importance of adopting
00:17electricity-saving habits.
00:20The series is part of the National Malaysia Energy Literacy Programme, or MELP, and was
00:25first held last year in 10 schools in the Klang Valley, involving 890 students.
00:32This year, it will be held in 60 schools in 6 states.
00:36Besides raising awareness among the younger generation on energy consumption, TNB Chief
00:41Retail Officer Kamal Arifin A. Rahman said the programme was also tailored to promote
00:45sustainable practices and emphasises the importance of energy safety.
00:50Powering the Future programme is about our collaborative programme with Star Media.
00:54This is to encourage the new habits among the next generation of Malaysia with regards
01:01to energy efficiency, energy saving, and also raising the awareness among the students about
01:07the importance of depleting non-renewable energy resources, for example, like coal and
01:13gas.
01:14And looking forward into the future, looking into how we should utilise more the source
01:19of renewable energy.
01:21And of course, this programme involves students from various levels, from the primary and
01:27also secondary students.
01:28It's not an in-class room type of education, it's more of interacting, engaging, and gamification programme.
01:38Kamal Arifin said TNB co-developed the idea with SMG and non-governmental organisation
01:44MAD, or Make a Difference, to fulfil its responsibility in educating and raising the
01:49awareness level about energy literacy amongst the young of different ages and backgrounds.
01:55Throughout the programme, TNB wants to help the young have a better grasp of energy-saving-related
01:59issues as well as fostering energy-efficient habits and behaviours.
02:04The day-long programme begins with interactive games and activities tailored to suit the
02:09students' grade level of understanding.
02:12This would be done through fun learning workshops and educational sessions, centred around the
02:17main principles of awareness, application, advocate and adapt.
02:21It's actually to create what we call the critical mass in the society.
02:27And it starts with students.
02:28The reason why we do this is because we think that the students can be the advocacy or the
02:33advocates to energy efficiency and energy saving and also the safety of using the electricity
02:39at home.
02:40So, definitely we targeted this young generation, when they go back to their parents, they go
02:45back home, they can also expand their knowledge on this programme.
02:51Kamal Arifin said TNB was also targeting technical schools, skills training centres and other
02:56institutions of higher learning, so that the message gets across to more young people.
03:01Apart from schools, TNB has introduced programmes at tertiary levels since 2022.
