Have you ever applied for a job and then never hear a thing back from your potential employer? Well, don't take it personally -- because it could be that the job never existed in the first place. So-called 'ghost jobs' are advertised positions that an employer has no intention of filling -- or that have already been filled. And some companies do it in order to give the impression that an organisation is thriving -- and also to placate over-worked staff.

00:00This concept came in as a social or a popular science, but you can see evidence in job vacancy
00:13index which job and skills have provided an index to show that unemployment rate is 4%,
00:24but there are more jobs available.
00:27So that simply means that there are ghost jobs and it is not being recorded and it is
00:35skewing the government data on job vacancy index.
00:41We can't say it is illegal because the regulation has not caught up with the online recruitment
00:49process or online job advertisements, which we have now got into it.
00:56So what it simply means is businesses tend to keep it for their benefit because they
01:03can attract warm pool of candidates where they use the competency-based understanding
01:11rather than position-based job description.
01:14So what it simply means is jobs are changing very quickly, the tasks are changing, which
01:22means that the competencies to do those jobs need to change too.
01:28So having a bigger pool of attracting prospective candidates, job seekers, then it helps businesses
01:38to build the competency profile which they can use whenever they require for their various
01:46positions.
01:47It helps the organization, but it has a disadvantage to the job seekers.
01:53It is very difficult to find out, but the way we can do it is if the job has been there
02:01for a while, then you know that they would have already filled in the position, but they
02:08have kept it open to keep attracting more pool of candidates.
02:14That is one way, but there's no clear way by which we can identify where and how you
02:20can detect those jobs because sometimes job seekers might disadvantage themselves by not
02:27applying for it if they're not going to take care of the opportunity.
