00:00Pools are opening for some early, and summer camps are being canceled today because of extreme heat.
00:06That's right, AccuWeather's Amy Victor is live with how the weather is impacting millions of people in the Midwest. Amy, good evening.
00:17Justin, good evening to you. You know, what are the odds that all of Chicago's public pools and splash pads open today for the first time this season?
00:26This is huge. It impacts millions of people because they'll be able to seek relief from the heat, which we know is lingering on in the Midwest today.
00:34And just a few hours away from here in Springfield, Illinois, that's where we're seeing pools opening even earlier than expected for the season.
00:42With the heat expected to stick around all week, cities in the Midwest are working quickly to find places for people to stay cool.
00:49Cooling centers are now open from Detroit to Kansas City as temperatures hover near 100 degrees.
00:56Now, temperatures this high are typically more common in the Midwest later in the summer. I asked one person how they felt about the early season heat.
01:06I've been here a long time, and I've got 90s in June before, and I know it's going to be like torture, but, you know, been here all my life, so we know how to deal with it.
01:17With most schools just going out on summer break, many summer camps also started up today.
01:23This meant limited time outdoors or camp being canceled outright to keep children safe.
01:28I heard from one camp in Missouri that kept their kids indoors today, while another in Ohio ended early at 11 a.m.
01:37And we're likely going to see more precautions like this, Jeff, as the week goes on, because we know prolonged exposure to the heat can lead to heat-related illnesses.
01:46I mean, we appreciate that report, and that's some really good advice.
01:49The heat can be a true danger, and it may not have the same flavor as maybe a severe thunderstorm warning or a tornado threat, but it could be a major problem out there.
01:58And we want everybody to be safe and stay ahead of it and know your limitations as well.
