OpenAI and Microsoft Join Forces with Oracle to Expand Computing Power for Booming AI Applications

OpenAI and Microsoft are partnering with Oracle so that OpenAI can use Microsoft's Azure AI platform on Oracle's infrastructure to gain more computing capacity for applications like ChatGPT. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said the company needs substantially more infrastructure to power its services, and that Oracle's chips will "enable OpenAI to continue to scale." The new partnership with Oracle will provide OpenAI with additional computing beyond what Microsoft alone can supply to help meet demand and prevent future outages. Microsoft and OpenAI have emphasized that their "strategic cloud relationship" is unchanged and pre-training of frontier models will still happen using Microsoft's supercomputers.
