01:02This is Life is Strange Double Exposure.
01:17It's been three years since the release of Life is Strange True Colors.
01:21Since then, the team at Deck Nine Games have been hard at work on a game, a story and a
01:27world worthy of the return of Max Caulfield, beloved star of the very first Life is Strange.
01:34I've been here before.
01:36We knew that this had to be something special.
01:39We knew we had to respect the two unforgettable endings to the first chapter of Max's story
01:45while also crafting something new, something fresh that echoed and acknowledged Max's past
01:52challenges, even as it moved her personal story forward, welcoming in new players from
01:58the very beginning while giving fans the story they didn't know they wanted.
02:03The team have been collaborating along with our partners at Square Enix External Studios
02:08to bring Max and Caledon University to vivid life.
02:13And we couldn't have done it without Hannah, Tel, and the rest of our stunning cast, whose
02:18performances elevate and bring nuance to every moment of our story.
02:23Together, we've built for you a supernatural murder mystery packed full of twists, intrigue,
02:31and heart that still delivers on every aspect of Life is Strange's DNA, meaningful emotional
02:37choices driven by your connection to other characters.
02:41A diverse and complex cast that reflects the world around us in all its joy, sorrow, and
02:48anxiety, romance, humor, and light even in the darkest of circumstances.

03:04you back.
03:05And for those of you curious about Max and her new adventure, we're delighted to have
03:10you join us.
03:11Welcome to our deep dive reveal of Life is Strange Double Exposure.
03:24I swore I'd never use my power again.
03:32But two nights ago...
03:33I found my friend's body in the woods.
03:52I don't know who I can trust.
03:56Or who trusts me.
03:59But my friend, Safi, is dead.
04:04Max...
04:06So why can I still hear her voice?
04:10Max...
04:14Focusing my power, I somehow shifted into a parallel timeline.
04:23Here, Safi is still alive.
04:26The danger stalks our every step.
04:30And only I can investigate both realities.
04:33In a parallel world?
04:36It's the same as this one, except you're...
04:43dead.
04:46I can still save Safi.
04:49If I can solve and prevent the same murder across two timelines.
05:00I can.
05:12Life is Strange Double Exposure is a thrilling narrative adventure game where you investigate
05:17a supernatural murder mystery.
05:20You play as Max Caulfield, a photographer and artist-in-residence at Caledon University,
05:26a prestigious college in upstate Vermont.
05:29When Max's new best friend, Safi, is found murdered in mysterious circumstances,
05:35Max discovers she has the supernatural ability to shift back and forth between two timelines.
05:42In one timeline, Safi is dead.
05:45But in the other, she's still alive.
05:49And still in danger.
05:50Oh shit.
05:51Max realizes the killer will soon strike again in both versions of reality.
05:58Max, and the player, will use her new shift power to explore two versions of this vivid
06:03winter campus.
06:05As you forge allies and pursue suspects across two versions of reality,
06:09you'll shape both timelines through your unforgettable choices.
06:14But it's a race against time.
06:16A relentless detective has Max in his sights.
06:20And Safi's killer grows closer with every clue uncovered.
06:25With Max's new power to shift between two timelines,
06:28can you solve and prevent the same murder?
06:32Wild, right?
06:34Murder Mysteries, a narrative genre full of thrilling stories and intense action,
06:39scattered with red herrings in the inevitable, climactic twist.
06:43But what happens when elements of the supernatural become involved,
06:46making the mystery at hand seemingly impossible to solve?
06:51And how do you write something so complex?
06:53And how do you write something so complex?
06:56And how do you write something so complex?
06:58And how do you write something so complex?
07:01And how do you write something so complex?
07:04I'm chatting with Game Director Jonathan Staudter and Narrative Director Felice Kwan
07:09to learn how they crafted Life is Strange Double Exposure's supernatural murder mystery.
07:17Jonathan and Felice, it is so wonderful to be here with you.
07:21How does it feel now that you can finally talk about Life is Strange Double Exposure?
07:26It's definitely been exciting to finally get to talk about
07:30what Tech N9ne's been working on these past few years
07:32and get to talk more about the game today.
07:34We are excited for fan theories about what's going on in the trailer.
07:38Oh, we're going to have a lot of theories.
07:39We're going to have a lot of theories, trust me, because a mystery is afoot, right?
07:44And that is the core premise of the game.
07:46Right. But not just a murder mystery, it's a supernatural murder mystery.
07:49What initially starts as a whodunit in terms of the crime
07:52very quickly becomes a how could this have even happened?
07:55How is this even possible sort of crime?
07:57And then you as the player, as Max, are uniquely suited
08:01to use your time powers to solve this crime.
08:04Oh, can you tell me about Max, who she is and why she has time powers?
08:08Right. So Max Caulfield, famous photographer,
08:10artist-in-residence at Caledon University, which is the setting of our game.
08:13She's come to Caledon University to start afresh,
08:18to build a life that's separate from a past that she doesn't really want to think about anymore.
08:24But unfortunately for her, this mystery lands in her lap.
08:28So Felice, can you set the scene for us?
08:30Because we've got mysterious pasts at play,
08:32but then also this is a very unusual murder mystery, right?
08:35Right. So it is almost holiday break, dead winter.
08:40Max walks up a hill and finds her friend Sofie dead in the snow
08:46seconds after seeing Sofie talking with him.
08:48There are no footprints. There's no weapon.
08:51Police are completely stumped as to how it could have happened.
08:54So there's not really any evidence or leads to go by.
08:56How do you solve a murder mystery like this? What tools might you have?
09:00Luckily, Max unlocks a supernatural ability.
09:04She is able to shift from the current timeline into a parallel timeline
09:09where her friend Sofie is alive.
09:11And fans of the first game will recognize this as kind of an evolution of her rewind power.
09:16And why exactly that has happened is at the heart of the story.
09:19What the hell was that?
09:22So my understanding is there are two timelines at play here,
09:24one in which Sofie is still alive and the other she's been murdered.
09:28If I'm Max, why don't I just stay in the timeline where she's still alive?
09:32Because Max will very quickly discover the killer is still at large
09:35in the timeline where Sofie is alive.
09:37And so using her new supernatural abilities,
09:40Max will have to both solve and prevent the same crime across two timelines.
09:45So we're dealing with two timelines and a race against time
09:47to stop a killer before they kill again.
09:50This seems like it was very complicated to write.
09:53It was really complicated.
09:55It was also very interesting because Max meets essentially two versions
09:59of every person that she's investigating, two versions of the environment.
10:03And these will both differ in ways that are significant because of Sofie's death.
10:08It is also kind of bittersweet because even the people that Max is growing closer to,
10:13like Moses, there's two versions of him as well.
10:16And she needs to navigate that.
10:18Can you tell us a bit more about Moses?
10:20So Moses is Sofie's best friend and he's an astrophysicist at this college.
10:26And because of his science background, he might be the only person who can help
10:30Max understand what's going on with her powers.
10:32And the two of them grow closer through this investigation.
10:35But Max has to wrestle with if she's ready to open up
10:38and tell someone about her powers for the first time in years.
10:41Now, Jonathan, I can imagine that the multiple timelines
10:44also really lends itself to some interesting gameplay.
10:47What can we expect?
10:48Well, so Max's ability to shift between the two timelines
10:50open up a whole slew of new gameplay possibilities for us.
10:53And so Max will be navigating between different versions
10:57of the same space impacted by Sofie's death.
10:59And she'll be able to use these powers to circumnavigate puzzles,
11:03discover clues about suspects she might not otherwise have access to,
11:06in addition to navigating these different relationships in each space.
11:10Oh, so like maybe in one timeline, a door is closed.
11:13In another, it's been unlocked.
11:15But it sort of depends on how you play the game, right?
11:19Right.
11:19Or Max can make sure that it is unlocked.
11:21Oh, now we're learning.
11:23I'm going to write this down in advance.
11:26And you mentioned earlier that this is described as a, quote unquote,
11:30impossible murder that only Max can solve.
11:34Why is that?
11:35Because Max can talk to the murder victim.
11:38She's the only person who can do that.
11:40And it's her relationship with Sofie that's the key to solving it.
11:43Sofie's alive.
11:45Max, are you okay?
11:47It kind of seems like you're on drugs.
11:49Huh?
11:51Oh.
11:54No, I'm just really happy you're here with me.
12:00And your mom.
12:04So, drugs then.
12:08So, let's talk about Max's incredible new ability to bend time.
12:13Give us the lowdown on that.
12:15Right. So, Max has the ability to tear the fabric between these two timelines
12:20and instantaneously travel between them.
12:23We call it shift.
12:24That's a lot of responsibility.
12:25And that's a lot of power.
12:27Where does it come from?
12:28Because we know Max to have had powers in the past, right?
12:30Yeah.
12:31She actually does not have her rewind powers anymore.
12:35She has not used it because of the trauma associated with it and fear of what might happen.
12:40And so, when Sofie is murdered, she can't rewind.
12:44It's like losing fluency in a language.
12:48But she does care enough about Sofie that she's willing to use the new version of her power,
12:53the shifting, to try to help her friend.
12:56But why that has happened is, Max doesn't know.
12:59It's kind of at the heart of the story.
13:01So, is Max kind of thrown by having this new power?
13:03Or is she sort of old hat at this?
13:05She's like, yeah, I've just got another power.
13:07Pile it on.
13:08She, definitely at first, she needs to use the power to investigate how the power works
13:13before she can even start to investigate the murder.
13:16So, right off the bat, she is concerned.
13:19Is this some version of rewind?
13:21Have I gone back in time?
13:22She doesn't know.
13:23And so, she starts traversing the timelines,
13:26pulsing and listening in on folks across the Vale
13:30and deducing how her power works.
13:32Okay, so this pulse power, is that the thing that she does
13:35where it's kind of like an aura coming out of her fingertips?
13:38And she can, yeah, what's that?
13:40Right.
13:40So, Max can extend her supernatural senses to detect
13:45where the Vale is weakest between the two timelines,
13:48the spots where she can shift.
13:49And in doing that, she can also grab a glimpse of other people,
13:54key objects across the timeline without having to shift,
13:56which comes in really handy when you're a detective
13:58and you want to eavesdrop and snoop and track suspects.
14:02So, when she uses the pulse, she kind of like takes this glimpse
14:05into the two timelines, can make an assessment,
14:08and then choose which one to shift into.
14:11How does the shift work?
14:12Right.
14:12So, when Max has identified one of these weak points
14:14between the timelines, we call them shift spots,
14:17she can use the shifting ability to instantaneously travel
14:20to the other timeline.
14:21So, in a flash, she is instantaneously transported
14:24to the opposite version of the environment,
14:28different non-playable characters around.
14:29And so, she's able to use that to traverse puzzles,
14:33circumnavigate locked doors,
14:36suspects that won't talk to her in one timeline,
14:38but will in another.
14:39Oh, so, like, is it apparent to the player,
14:43yeah, I'm in this timeline where Safi's still alive,
14:45or I'm in this one where Safi's dead.
14:46Like, how will I know?
14:48I'd, like, confuse myself playing this.
14:50Right.
14:51So...
14:51Does Max get confused?
14:53She does.
14:54She absolutely does get confused.
14:56And along the way, she has to learn what's different
14:59between the two timelines, along with the player.
15:02But Safi's death not just reverberates
15:04through the relationships on campus,
15:07but also through the environment.
15:09And we reflect this in different ways,
15:11different set dressing, different audio, different lighting.
15:13The weather patterns change, the butterfly effect.
15:16And so, Safi's death has this immense impact
15:19that creates two distinctly different timelines.
15:22I do think that it will be really clear
15:24to both Max and the player where she's at.
15:27At the same time, she's juggling twice as many
15:31social interactions and twice as many clues.
15:35So she absolutely messes up.
15:37It's a lot of fun for Max to try to keep all that straight.
15:39Right.
15:40So she'll have to keep an eye out for dialogue choices
15:42because if you're not paying attention,
15:44you might stumble into Max being confused about the timeline.
15:47Whereas if you're on your game,
15:49you can avoid those little faux pas in a conversation.
15:52I'm sorry.
15:53I was being nosy.
15:55I don't know why.
15:58Probably just paranoid.
16:00You think?
16:02Jesus, Max.
16:04Get your shit together.
16:05And also, we're on a college campus.
16:08So she's supposed to be using this power
16:10to be solving a murder mystery.
16:13But I imagine there's probably also a lot of drama
16:15that filters through.
16:16And she's an artist in residence.
16:18So she's supposed to be this mentor figure
16:21to the students who are still there on holiday break.
16:23But at the same time, it would be really useful
16:26to manipulate these students to solve this mystery.
16:28So she is juggling a lot.
16:31So Max Caulfield, who has been so closed off for so long,
16:35now has to be like,
16:36OK, I have to juggle all these new social situations
16:39and put myself out there.
16:41It sounds like this is going to be
16:42a big learning experience for Max.
16:44Now I have more impossible questions
16:47than I had to begin with.
16:48I have to ask, because I'm just so curious,
16:52which came first?
16:53The idea for Max to have this timeline shifting power?
16:58Or did your team just want to experiment
17:00with the idea of multiple timelines?
17:03We have been interested in multiple timelines for a while
17:06because of that gameplay possibilities.
17:10But I think it wasn't until we were exploring Max's story
17:13that it really clicked how we could do it
17:16in a way that felt absolutely intertwined
17:20with the emotional journey as well.
17:21And shifting and traversing the timelines
17:23is in players' hands.
17:24You have to trust the player is going to do it.
17:26Yeah, the player over the course of the game
17:28is going to learn how to use this ability
17:30to navigate the environments, the relationships.
17:34And then at a certain point,
17:35we just trust the player to navigate
17:38and solve this mystery.
17:40When I woke up, Safi was gone forever.
17:44And now I am in a whole new world of questions.
17:50What are these worlds?
17:53Timelines?
17:54Realities?
17:56Where did this new power come from?
17:58Is Rewind gone forever?
18:01Lucky for me, one question clearly takes priority.
18:06How do I protect the Safi I have left?
18:10Now, as a big fan, I am so happy
18:13that Hanatel is returning as Max.
18:16But for people who are new,
18:18players who are new to the Life is Strange franchise,
18:20do they have to go back and play all of the older titles?
18:24What's the point of entry for them?
18:26You don't have to at all.
18:27All of the Life is Strange games stand on their own
18:30and have their own story.
18:32And so for Life is Strange Double Exposure,
18:34players will have everything they need
18:36to understand the emotional context of Max's past.
18:39But it is a brand new location in a small college.
18:43There's new characters.
18:45You can absolutely start with this first game.
18:47Seems like Safi rubbed a few people the wrong way.
18:50How should I know?
18:52Go talk to somebody who's been here longer than six months.
18:55We do all know that Life is Strange is all about choices
18:58and the consequences of those choices, for better or worse.
19:02So for returning players like me,
19:04who made really hard decisions that we now have to live with,
19:08do we bring those with us to Life is Strange Double Exposure?
19:12Yes.
19:12So the returning players from Max's first adventure will remember
19:16that there's a massive decision to make at the end of that game
19:19results in two very different endings.
19:22And it was really important at Deck 9
19:24if we were going to make another Max adventure
19:26that the game would have to respect both those endings.
19:29Life is Strange Double Exposure does that very thing.
19:32There's no canon ending in our book to the first game.
19:35Double Exposure will respect both endings
19:38in Max's thoughts, her journal, her SMS,
19:41her interactions with other characters,
19:43what she opts to reveal about her past to her new friends.
19:46It's all reflective of that final choice.
19:50For all of us players who were wracked with guilt
19:53making those tough decisions,
19:55who kind of crave making decisions like that again,
19:58will we have lots of those choices that keep us up at night
20:02playing Life is Strange Double Exposure?
20:04Yeah, Max will face a lot of tough decisions.
20:07It's kind of her thing.
20:09Perfect, perfect. That's what I want.
20:11Bring it on, bring it on.
20:13And so it's been so long since the original game came out.
20:17For players who maybe don't have the original console
20:20that they played on,
20:21or let alone the save file from their Life is Strange 1 game,
20:26how will they import their previous choices?
20:30So Safi and Max will have a conversation
20:32that's pretty early on in the game
20:34and Arcadia Bay just comes up naturally in that conversation.
20:37Players can remake the choice then,
20:40or they could try the other way.
20:42Okay, so it sounds like Safi is kind of like...
20:45a little interrogation there with Max.
20:47Safi's very curious about Max
20:50because Max is generally pretty closed off
20:53and Safi knows there's something interesting there.
20:55Okay, so that's where we're going to see this backstory come into play.
20:59Very, very cool.
21:01So it sounds like new players are all good to go.
21:03Yeah, 100%.
21:04It was very important to us that for folks
21:06entirely brand new to the franchise
21:07and brand new to Max Caulfield as a character
21:09that everything they need to know about her
21:11is right there in Life is Strange Double Exposure.
21:14And then for returning players,
21:16we absolutely honor the biggest, most impactful decision
21:20you're going to remember from that first game
21:22and carry that forward
21:23so you can see how that plays out in Max's latest adventure.
21:27Is this about the blue haired girl
21:29whose picture you keep in your wallet?
21:32Wait, you snooped in my wallet?
21:34Stop deflecting.
21:35The girl with the blue hair.
21:37What's the deal with you two?
21:44Next up, we speak to Hannah Tell,
21:47the iconic voice of Max Caulfield.
21:50And be sure to stick around
21:51because in less than 10 minutes,
21:53we'll showcase an extended look
21:55at new Life is Strange Double Exposure gameplay
21:58for the very first time.
22:00You don't want to miss it.
22:05I'm Hannah Tell and I play Max Caulfield
22:08in Life is Strange Double Exposure.
22:11Hannah, I'm so thrilled that you are back
22:13as Max Caulfield in Life is Strange Double Exposure.
22:15This is what we've been waiting for.
22:18How does it feel for you to return to Max?
22:21Probably a lot of emotions under play.
22:24Yeah, so many emotions.
22:25It's an incredible feeling.
22:27And in a certain way, it feels like I'm coming home.
22:30I've been back for so long.
22:32In a certain way, it feels like I'm coming home.
22:35I love Max so much and we have so much in common.
22:38And my experience playing her the first time around
22:42was so formative in my life.
22:44It's a real honor to get to come back
22:47and expand on her story.
22:50How did things feel this time around
22:52versus portraying the character in 2015?
22:56Well, she's grown up so much.
22:59She was in high school in the first game.
23:01And now she's, you know, out of her college years,
23:03she has a somewhat prestigious position
23:06as an artist-in-residence at this amazing university.
23:10And she has this whole amazing future ahead of her
23:14in terms of her artist career as a photographer.
23:18And I think that that's really given her a sense of purpose
23:22that's motivated her to kind of shed some of the shyness,
23:26parts of her introversion that held her back.
23:29I think that she's kind of grown out of that.
23:31She's more comfortable with who she is
23:33and she feels like, hey, this is who I'm supposed to be.
23:37Be safe, yeah?
23:39When am I not?
23:40She's been suppressing her powers while on the road.
23:44And now she's this artist-in-residence
23:46at Caledon in Vermont.
23:48Does she still feel like she needs to suppress them?
23:52Or why did she feel like she needed to suppress them?
23:55Well, the powers resulted in ultimate devastation in her life
24:00and everyone's life around her.
24:01And even like the space-time continuum
24:04with the weather-related phenomenons
24:06that were taking place because of her using this power.
24:09So she feels like this is like a deadly weapon.
24:12It's not something that she's gonna ever wanna use again.
24:15And also it really sets her apart from having a normal life
24:19and having normal relationships with people.
24:22So I think she's put that away very confidently
24:27and is very hesitant about ever tapping back
24:30into that side of herself again.
24:32She doesn't know what could happen.
24:34It could even kill her to try to use her powers again.
24:36Whoa.
24:36I mean, who knows?
24:37Yeah.
24:38We've caught up with who Max Caulfield is now.
24:40What has she been doing in the time
24:42between the events of Arcadia Bay to now?
24:45Well, she's been on the road.
24:48She doesn't feel comfortable in any one place.
24:52And she's living like a nomadic lifestyle,
24:54taking photographs of abandoned, lonely spaces.
24:58For some reason, anything that's desolate
25:00or stark and intense really draws her eye.
25:04And she likes to photograph that.
25:06And she's made a bit of a name for herself
25:08by photographing these types of images.
25:11And she searches for them and stays in hotels
25:15and hangs out in local watering holes
25:18and just kind of absorbs the slice of life
25:20of each little town that she's been in.
25:22And now she's in a new environment
25:24with all new people and a new job responsibility.
25:29And new powers too, right?
25:30And new powers.
25:31Can you talk about that a little bit?
25:33Because fans of the original game,
25:36we love the rewind power.
25:37You know, we were turning back time,
25:38but now time is moving in a different direction.
25:41Exactly.
25:42Well, as Max has evolved, her powers have evolved.
25:45She didn't use that power for a really long time,
25:47understandably, because it created so much devastation.
25:50And so it atrophied and it adapted
25:53into something different.
25:55What if I told you there's this other timeline
25:59where Safi is alive
26:02and I can travel between this timeline and that one?
26:07So she has this supernatural ability
26:08to move between the timelines,
26:10see the timeline where Safi is still alive,
26:13go into the one where she's dead,
26:15talk to people.
26:17Yes, exactly.
26:18She has a unique position to figure out
26:21what's really going on in this terrible situation
26:24of Safi's death.
26:25So I know you're a true crime fan.
26:28So when you got the call of,
26:30hey, we want you to come back and play Max
26:33and solve this mystery,
26:35where were you?
26:35What was going through your head
26:36when you finally learned the news?
26:39Well, I was still in school.
26:40I was studying neuroscience.
26:42I was trying to prepare to take calculus,
26:44but I had to have two different tutors.
26:46It was a horrible situation.
26:47Two timelines, two tutors.
26:49Two timelines, two tutors, one mystery,
26:51one failing grade.
26:54But I got the call and it was just like
26:56such an amazing rescue from my math phobia.
27:00And it was the producer and the performance director
27:04telling me, and I just sobbed into the phone.
27:06Well, one out of two ain't bad.
27:10As you can probably tell,
27:11the fan base, myself included,
27:13have a very personal relationship with Max.
27:16How does it feel for you personally
27:18knowing the impact that you've made
27:20on fans in the community?
27:22It's just unbelievable to be playing a part
27:26that resonated with someone, so many people.
27:31It makes me feel so validated
27:33and so honored and so grateful.
27:38There are so many fans of this game
27:40that have created this really loving community
27:43where they share their art
27:45and they pour their time and energy
27:47into creating gorgeous artwork
27:50or really intricate creative cosplays.
27:53Tattoos.
27:54Tattoos etched on their skin permanently
27:56because the game changed them
27:59and the game changed me too.
28:01So I feel very connected to them
28:04and it moves me to tears all the time.
28:08Let's thrash, Chakrabara.
28:11Okay.
28:12Let's pretend you said something normal,
28:14but basically that.
28:16And it's not often that an actor
28:17gets to reprise a character.
28:19Was that something that you,
28:21from a physical perspective,
28:22from a performance perspective,
28:24had to take into account?
28:25Because, you know, back in 2015,
28:28you were portraying a teenage Max
28:30versus Life is Strange Double Exposure
28:32was an adult Max.
28:33Did you have to change your voice or pitch?
28:36Yes.
28:36Well, my voice kind of stayed the same,
28:39but Max's voice matured
28:41and got a bit more deeper
28:42and more grounded in its tone.
28:45And her posture became a bit more sure of herself
28:50and tall and standing to her full height
28:53and taking up space
28:54and being comfortable with that.
28:56And so I had to, you know,
28:58adjust everything about my body
29:00to try to convey her growth.
29:06And now we're proud to present
29:16an extended look at the gameplay
29:18from Life is Strange Double Exposure.
29:33Give me the Cliff Notes version
29:34of what we're actually here to see.
29:36A bunch of little pieces of a shattered asteroid.
29:40From 11 million miles away.
29:43This is what I give for introducing you to.
29:48Wow.
29:52So should we be worried
29:54about this crazy asteroid hitting Earth?
29:57Not in our lifetime.
29:59And it'll probably disintegrate
30:00before it reaches the surface.
30:04All right, Max.
30:05You have 24 hours before the world ends.
30:08What would you do?
30:12Oh, I'm documenting that shit.
30:15Can you imagine how cool
30:16an apocalypse photo set would be?
30:18Oh my God.
30:20This again?
30:21Nobody would see it.
30:22I'm telling you.
30:23Art requires an audience.
30:25Otherwise, it's just...
30:26Okay, geez.
30:28Agree to disagree.
30:31Awful quiet over there, Murph.
30:34Don't want to weigh in?
30:35Oh, uh, I wasn't listening.
30:38But hey, looks like the equipment's working.
30:42Why am I not at home
30:43wrapped up in a blanket burrito right now?
30:53I don't know.
30:54Me and Moses out in town without you?
30:56I think of the wild times you would have missed.
31:00Lakeport's most notorious party animals.
31:04Oh, I brought cups.
31:17Figured that was better than passing the bottle around.
31:26This is the best you could do?
31:27I don't work in this building.
31:30Don't blame me for the astronomy department's bad taste.
31:33Mine says I'm the world's horniest grandma.
31:37Grab a mug, Max.
31:43Well, one out of two ain't bad.
31:53I have some good news.
31:55Uh, it's big, but I can't tell you what it is.
32:00You can't tell us you have good news and then-
32:03I don't want to say anything else until everything is finalized.
32:07Mysterious.
32:09Well, whatever we're celebrating, I think it calls for a selfie.
32:13Oh, let me.
32:13I just got this camera and I want to get some good use out of it.
32:18What should we say?
32:20Damn, I think I have hypothermia.
32:26Moses has hypothermia.
32:33I've got incoming.
32:38I'm gonna, you know, do my thing.
32:51Good news, huh?
32:53You two and your secrets.
32:55How you ever hold a conversation with each other is beyond me.
33:02I'm dying to know what Safi's good news is.
33:05Maybe I can somehow convince her to spill.
33:13I love how Moses always looks so passionate about his work,
33:18even when he's just crunching numbers.
33:21Hey, Moses, casually lean on the telescope.
33:25I might knock it over.
33:27Pretend.
33:50Hey, Safi.
33:58Find anything poem-able?
34:03The moon?
34:05Kind of, though I'd hardly be the first.
34:09Carl Sandburg called it a friend for the lonesome to talk to.
34:13Oh, pretty.
34:16I haven't seen a moon this beautiful in a long time.
34:20It's bright outside of Oregon.
34:23Oh, a Max biography nugget.
34:26Those are rare.
34:31You never really talk about why you came here.
34:37You already know.
34:39Your mom threw me a lifeline.
34:41Pulled me out of freelance hell.
34:46One of these days I'm gonna find out what you're running from, Max Caulfield.
34:51That's a promise.
34:56Okay, spill.
34:57What's the news?
34:58No chance.
34:59That vault is closed.
35:01You're killing me here.
35:03Are you really gonna keep secrets from your dear friend, Max?
35:06You're one to talk, my dear.
35:14Okay, I'll leave you to your muse.
35:20Hey, Moses, doesn't some small party of you want to know what Safi's good news is?
35:47All right, I think I have an idea.
35:51But once we go down this road, we can't turn back.
35:55Um, okay.
36:00Give this to Safi, if you can.
36:02You'll probably have to trick her into taking it or plan it on her.
36:06Like a prank?
36:07No, this has rules.
36:09So it's more of a game.
36:12Whoever holds the bottle cap has to do whatever you say.
36:16Well, within reason.
36:17Moses, I have literally never wanted to play a game more in my entire life.
36:23You say that now.
36:24But Safi has a very loose definition of within reason.
36:27She'll come for you next.
36:30Okay, wish me luck.
36:40Okay, how am I going to plan this on Safi?
36:43How am I going to plan this on Safi?
36:52Since Safi hasn't quit smoking yet, maybe I can use it to my advantage.
36:58I'm not above relaxing my principles to give Safi that bottle cap.
37:02There might be some other hiding places up here that could work.
37:08Could I hide the bottle cap in a snowball?
37:12Not sure I want to rely on my aim.
37:14I'd only get one shot.
37:17Safi eats these when she can't slip away for a smoke.
37:21It'd be totally normal for me to offer her one.
37:23Now I've just got to deliver this to Safi.
37:45Hey, Safi.
37:50Want a piece of candy?
37:52There's a few left.
37:53Oh, twist my arm.
37:58Shit, it's a conspiracy.
38:05Come on, Max.
38:07Surely you of all people would let a girl have her secrets.
38:13And violate the sacred covenant of the bottle cap?
38:17Never.
38:18You know I'm going to get you back for this, right?
38:20Less threading, more talking.
38:22Okay.
38:24So, well, I've been shopping around a bunch of my poetry, right?
38:29Like, as a collection.
38:32And a publisher made an offer.
38:36For real?
38:37Oh my god, Safi!
38:39That's incredible!
38:40Congratulations!
38:45Thank you.
38:47Nothing signed or anything yet,
38:48so I want to keep it under wraps until all the paperwork gets signed.
38:52Understood.
38:53Your secret is safe with me.
38:59Oh.
39:01Oh, shit.
39:03Hello?
39:05This is Safi.
39:08Yes, this is Safi Alewellan Fayyad speaking.
39:15Be right back.
39:23So, would you really take pictures of the end of the world?
39:36Yeah, think about it.
39:39I take photos of empty buildings.
39:41An empty planet?
39:44That's next level.
39:46Okay.
39:47But it's like Safi said, nobody is ever going to see them.
39:52Okay.
39:57Sure, but who cares?
40:00I take a lot of photos nobody ever sees.
40:04I want to go out doing something I'm good at, you know?
40:10Huh, what?
40:12No, nothing.
40:12Just didn't take you as a it's the journey, not the destination type.
40:18I mean, I guess I'm not.
40:21It's more like sometimes you reach the destination alone and that's okay.
40:30Look at that.
40:33What a tail.
40:44Moses was right.
40:46This is awesome.
40:50So,
41:06are you okay?
41:09Yeah, all good.
41:11Just dizzy.
41:12Maybe the champagne.
41:16I think I'm gonna take off, get some rest.
41:19I can give you a ride if you wait a few minutes.
41:21No, that's okay.
41:22I think a walk will clear my head.
41:25I think so.
41:48So,
42:13I'm glad Moses invited me out tonight.
42:19Exactly how you came into my life at all.
42:28Caledon's a beautiful campus, but it's even better when it snows.
42:35What a perfect night for walking home.
42:48I'll just catch up with Safi tomorrow.
42:54Safi's chain-smoking again?
42:57I wonder what that call was about.
43:04Wow, Safi.
43:06What did Mr. Snowman ever do to you?
43:19Now I know who's been leaving all that squirrel gore around campus.
43:34How far I'd go,
43:37cause I'd find you.
43:41Don't get to take a shot like this every day.
43:43Wow, you're really watching me, aren't you?
44:00This is not a test.
44:02Max!
44:03The emergency broadcast system is now in effect.
44:07I caused this.
44:09I caused all of this.
44:25Max?
44:27Hey.
44:29Hey, are you okay?
44:32Max?
44:34Something's wrong.
44:37Safi?
44:38Hey!
44:40Come back!
44:58There's Safi.
44:59She seems okay.
45:02I feel like I should check on her anyway.
45:09Better safe than sorry.
45:23Shit!
45:24Safi, hang on!
45:32Oh, Safi's fine.
45:36For a moment, I thought...
45:54Safi?
45:57Safi?
45:59Hey.
46:00You okay?
46:02I'm okay.
46:26Max!
46:32Damn.
