00:00An artist who's able to take their lived experience
00:04and then use it for some social change,
00:07they are the ones that have the ability to change the world.
00:14If you see a queer stand-up comedian,
00:16I don't think you understand
00:18the adversities they've overcome.
00:22Back when I was starting,
00:23there weren't really very many queer comics.
00:26When I started out,
00:27if someone were talking about being gay,
00:29most people would be shaking their head
00:31or make sure they understood what they heard.
00:33I wasn't open when I started comedy.
00:36It was scary for people.
00:38They had to be in the closet to protect their career.
00:41It was like enough already.
00:42Things have got to change.
00:43Things have got to evolve.
00:45If I never had sex with a woman again,
00:48I would still be a lesbian.
00:51It was very important, the idea that we could be seen,
00:54that we should be seen,
00:55and that we can be funny.
00:56I would not be a happy lesbian.
00:59Queer people taught America to stop being scared of us
01:03by making jokes.
01:05A lot of these performers,
01:07I am standing on their shoulders.
01:09It's been such a journey that we've taken.
01:12Queer comics, queer history,
01:14that all deserves to be talked about,
01:16and now is the time where people can.
