00:00Many has been part of history, but only few can bend history.
00:11Itself on this night of spectacle and public display, we transgender bend history.
00:20And that is our story.
00:27Hi, I'm Charmaine Gonzales, hailing all the way where the Chicharron Festival was celebrated.
00:36I'm from the municipality of Santa Maria, province of Bulacan.
00:43A proud Contisera, and I'm proud to be a Transgender Mom.
00:57I discovered that I'm a girl when I was 12 years old in my first year of high school.
01:19I feel like I'm a girl.
01:23I put on makeup even when I'm being scolded at school.
01:30My family doesn't know that I do these things because they don't really teach me.
01:37I don't have siblings. I'm the third oldest in my family.
01:40I'm the only part of the LGBT community.
01:43I left home when I was 13 years old because I didn't feel the presence of my family.
01:52That's why I decided to leave.
01:57I walked to the park in Santa Maria.
02:01Then I saw a gay man.
02:05He said that's where I lived.
02:08He said that he would help me.
02:10I decided to go with him because I was looking for a family.
02:16I was only a year old when I was adopted by a transgender man who is no longer in Canada.
02:23He adopted me when I was 15 years old.
02:29Mamita is the one who took care of me.
02:32She became my second mother.
02:35She took care of me, raised me, and supported me in everything.
02:41When Mamita came into my life, she taught me how to stand on my own two feet.
02:51She forced me to go to school.
02:56I will never forget what Mamita taught me.
03:00She taught me to stand on my own two feet and not to beg anyone.
03:06She also taught me to stand on my own two feet in a good way.
03:14I want to be a mother because I want my life to be complete.
03:18Because life is incomplete.
03:21I don't have a family.
03:24I don't have anyone to support me.
03:27I love you, Mommy.
03:30Sia is my daughter.
03:32She's four years old.
03:33I love her so much.
03:35I will do everything for her.
03:38When we adopted Sia, I was taking HRT.
03:41I was taking hormones like meal blockers.
03:44But I was afraid at that time because I was afraid that the hormones I was taking might affect her.
03:52But with God's mercy, she was healthy and there were no problems.
03:59Kit is a trans man.
04:01He's the one who brought Sia to life.
04:04He's also Sia's father.
04:07I'm the one who provides Sia with everything she needs.
04:11Then Kit is the one who takes care of her.
04:13I buy her everything she needs, like diapers, groceries, and most importantly, biscuits.
04:20I take care of her in the park, in the playgrounds.
04:26I have an online business.
04:27I sell swimsuits.
04:30I made a way for me to have my own business.
04:33I owe 5,600 pesos to the government.
04:36Because if you don't have 300 pesos, you don't have 500 pesos in your pocket.
04:41You can't feed a child.
04:44I really do everything I can to earn money.
04:51My favorite part of being a mother is taking care of Sia.
04:57She has no problems.
04:59You can see her even when you're very tired.
05:01You can see her.
05:03The problem will really go away.
05:07Sia is now four years old.
05:09She's about to go to school.
05:11I want her to go to school because I want her to have a normal life.
05:18I'm afraid because I'm part of the LGBT community.
05:24Her mom and dad are part of the LGBT community.
05:26I need to teach her how to guide herself.
05:32I need to make her understand that she has parents like this.
05:42Even if her parents are like this, they're still normal.
05:47They're still her parents.
05:49That's the most important thing.
05:51It's not about the criticism.
05:53It's about how you handle it.
05:57I talk to Sia about this.
05:59I tell her that her mom is a transgender.
06:03She says,
06:05Mom, what's transgender?
06:07I tell her,
06:09I'm the one who made you.
06:11You came from me,
06:13but your mom is a woman.
06:16Your mom's heart is a woman.
06:18Your mom's mind is a woman.
06:20Your mom's body is a woman.
06:22It's just a man's body.
06:24Before Sia came into my life,
06:26I was just at home.
06:28I was busy.
06:30I wasn't able to focus on work or business.
06:34When Sia came into my life,
06:36when she came out,
06:38that's when my mindset changed.
06:40I needed to work.
06:42I needed to do business.
06:44You can't just walk around.
06:46You can't just walk around.
06:48I have a responsibility that I can't escape.
06:50So I really needed to move.
06:52I really needed to work.
06:54And I really did my best.
06:56That's the most important thing for me.
06:58That Sia changed.
07:00When Sia came into my life.
07:08I started being a contessera
07:10when I was 15 years old.
07:12That's when I started earning money.
07:14That's when I became a manager.
07:18That's when I started providing my own stuff.
07:20Sia watched my pageants.
07:22And one time, I invited her.
07:24When I was doing my makeup backstage.
07:28I was doing my makeup.
07:30She was getting brushes.
07:32She was doing her makeup.
07:34Whatever she wanted, I would support her.
07:36Everything.
07:38I would do everything for her.
07:40Even if she left the Philippines.
07:42Go.
07:50If ever Sia discovers
07:52that she's part of the LGBT community.
07:54I will accept her.
07:56I will support her.
07:58Because our purpose as parents
08:00is to accept
08:02what our children want.
08:06We will support them
08:08no matter what they want.
08:10No matter what gender they want.
08:12As long as they grow up.
08:14My advice to Sia,
08:16I know that she will reach a point
08:18where she will have someone to lean on.
08:20You need to be brave.
08:22You need to fight for your life.
08:24Don't pay attention
08:26to the people
08:28who will lean on you.
08:30Because
08:32the time will come
08:34when they will understand
08:36that even if you have a transgender mom
08:38or a trans man dad,
08:40there's nothing wrong
08:42with having a parent like that.
08:44Because as long as you don't have
08:46someone to lean on.
08:54If I can talk to
08:56my 12-year-old self,
08:58I will tell her
09:00that her decision is right.
09:02Her decision is right
09:04because you made a decision
09:06that no matter what,
09:08you made the right decision.
09:10That you don't regret anything.
09:14That no matter what problem
09:16comes to you,
09:18that you don't expect
09:20from anyone
09:22that you will be the one
09:24to stand on your own two feet.
09:26Thank you because you are so strong.
09:34Thank you for watching this video.
