British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak raised eyebrows after he revealed he fasts for 36 hours between Sunday night and Tuesday morning each week. His decision is partially a nod to his Hindu faith, but it’s raised questions on whether observing an intermittent fasting routine is healthy.

00:29generally well I do some intermittent fastings on those days nothing
00:33otherwise I probably have Greek yogurt and blueberries during the week and
00:37then I have a second breakfast mid-morning which is either the Gale
00:40cinnamon morning bun or a pain au chocolat or a chocolate chip muffin so I
00:44have one chocolatey sugary pastry at some point. Intermittent fasting can help
01:05fuel fat loss but it also can improve interpersonal relationships and
01:09self-esteem. Eating all day long overtaxes our pancreas and our digestive
01:15system. It overtaxes it so much that it cannot work properly and if it cannot
01:22work properly we cannot absorb our food or the nutrients in that food. So when
01:27you eat insulin is secreted by the pancreas to move sugar into the cells. We
01:33store the bulk of our sugar in our liver and our skeletal muscle but when we
01:39exceed those storage sites we store it as fat. When we're fasted insulin levels
01:48are low and we can tap into fat stores for energy.
