00:00the NFL News in notes just because it's the offseason just
00:09because it's early June does not mean we do not have news to
00:12bring you around the National Football League mandatory
00:15minicamp going on around the NFL and a contract extension.
00:20We brought you contract extension news over the past week,
00:23but this not for a player this for a long time head coach.
00:27In fact, now the longest tenured head coach in the National
00:31Football League after Bill Belichick no longer working in
00:34New England that mantle is passed to Mike Tom 17 years at
00:39the helm of the Pittsburgh Steelers and it's not done there
00:43entering year number 18, which was his final under contract
00:47in the Steel City.
00:49The Steelers organization adds on a three-year contract
00:52extension that would seem to me Donnie.
00:55We're going to get two decades of Mike Tomlin at in Pittsburgh
00:59and you should and you should be happy for a Steelers fan
01:01because the one thing that you do know at the beginning of
01:03every season you will be competitive and you're getting
01:05some really good sound bites.
01:07There's no question that he's a solid coach in the NFL, but
01:10sometimes we take a look at the records which are very good
01:12been 173 and 111 playoff appearances and the key ingredient
01:16once again, no losing seasons.
01:19Here's the issue though in the NFL a lot of the times.
01:22It's really what have you done for me lately?
01:24Sure.
01:24We can look at that record in the losing season and even
01:26say, you know what man he won a Super Bowl championship
01:29good for him that Super Bowl is back in 2009.
01:32We're entering into the 2024 season.
01:34So expectations for a Steelers organization.
01:37That's one of the most, you know, bountiful we should say
01:40in NFL history with winning championships hasn't really been
01:43on that timeline of yes, we're expecting a Super Bowl this
01:46year solid team.
01:47Nonetheless, we'll see what Russ gives out but it's a no-brainer
01:50for the Steelers.
01:50Were they going to let Mike Tomlin go into the final year
01:53of his contract as a lame duck head coach that absolutely
01:55wasn't happening.
01:56So you had to give him the extension and we're pretty sure
01:59next year the Steelers once again, just like they've been
02:01under Mike Tomlin for the past 17 seasons will be competitive.
02:06I'm not going to bet against the Pittsburgh Steelers to finish
02:08below 500.
02:10I'm not going to bet against the Pittsburgh Steelers to finish
02:13with less than eight wins something they have never done
02:16in 17 years under Mike Tomlin heck.
02:19I might even sprinkle on a plus money price and a competitive
02:23AFC North and a competitive conference has a hole for the
02:26Steelers to see the postseason.
02:28Once again, they made the playoffs last year and Mason Rudolph
02:32was their quarterback Russell Wilson is going to be a better
02:35quarterback for Pittsburgh than the Steelers have had probably
02:38the last four years and that includes the final two years
02:41of Ben Roethlisberger's tenure in the Steel City when he could
02:45barely even move around the pocket.
02:48I know Russ did not work out in Denver, but it wasn't all on
02:52Russ.
02:52And frankly, Russell Wilson was pretty good last year in Mile
02:56High now with that being said, it's a really intriguing debate
03:02Donnie in my estimation.
03:03I have it often with the Iowa Hawkeyes a team that is consistently
03:07successful and for that you are grateful for that as a fan you
03:12are thankful, but there is a certain cap on your overall potential.
03:18There is a certain ceiling that is placed on your success.
03:22Yeah, you're going to win and you're going to win games and
03:25you might finish with a winning record.
03:26But are you a true AFC contender?
03:29Are you a true contender for that Lombardi trophy?
03:32I don't think anybody would argue that for the Steelers as of
03:36this moment.
03:37So is it enough in the Steel City and then in a weird de facto
03:42way?
03:42Do you place yourself in limbo never bad enough to need to make
03:46an overhaul or a change but never quite good enough from claiming
03:51the ultimate prize?
03:52No, and that's the tough point about it because you can say as
03:55an organization, you got exactly what you wanted out of your
03:57football coach.
03:58We are always competitive technically always in it.
04:01But also when those football teams at the beginning of the
04:03season, it's very rare where you point to the Pittsburgh Steelers
04:06and go, you know what?
04:07I think that team can make a run and win a Super Bowl band as
04:09you pointed out.
04:10Also, it's not as if you're playing in the AFC South.
04:13It's like hey the upstart Houston Texans.
04:15We just need to take care of them.
04:16You're going to play the Baltimore Ravens one of the best teams
04:18in football.
04:19You're going to take on the Cincinnati Bengals if they get their
04:21wide receivers in line, that's going to be a tough out in the
04:24Cleveland Browns expecting big expectations out of their quarterback
04:27and also a very good and talented football team start to finish
04:31on offense and defense.
04:32So this is not going to be an easy season in division here.
04:35They can win that division.
04:36They'll certainly be tested once they get to the playoffs, but
04:39it's always what have you done for me lately in a championship
04:42driven organization.
04:43It's been a long time which we were favorite talking about the
04:46Steelers to win an NFL championship.
04:49When you look at the Steelers Mike Tomlin came on with such
04:52strong success as a young coach as Donnie said they won a Super
04:56Bowl in the 2008 NFL campaign.
04:59They played in a Super Bowl two years later in 2010, but the
05:03last time that Pittsburgh has even appeared in a conference
05:06championship game in the AFC 2016 now nearly a decade ago, but
05:13Mike Tomlin extended probably should see two decades at the
05:16helm of the Steelers organization.
