00:00Liverpool City Council's plan to make the city smoke-free by 2030 has been
00:05approved. Almost two million pounders to be pumped into the strategy to make
00:09Liverpool a smoke-free city and clamp down on the city's biggest preventable
00:13killer. Documents made public by the local authorities said smokers in
00:16Liverpool spent almost two and a half thousand pounds a year on the habit.
00:20I don't like walking around the city when people are smoking not only
00:25cigarettes but other substances and you know it just it takes your breath away
00:30and you've got to sort of move back and you know if you're walking behind
00:34someone who's smoking it does smell on your clothes and I think they've got a
00:37good reason to stop it. You know if they want to smoke fair dues or you know
00:43don't smoke where other people are and around other people it's not fair.
00:48Well George Orwell, I think we're going into an Orwellian state. Now it's
00:52taking away people's freedom of choice whether they want to drink, whether they
00:56want to smoke. Let a person do what they want to do. I possibly agree with the pub
01:01ban in spaces but outside no I don't really agree. I'm a non-smoker but I
01:08don't agree with banning outdoors. We don't know what other people are
01:13suffering. Asthma, chronic disease and everything like that. I as I say I don't
01:18smoke. I used to smoke but I've given up by ten years now. No I don't believe it.
01:25It's dead hard to police anyway. According to a report outlining the
01:29strategy to be discussed by the council's cabinet, 17% of people in the
01:33city are classed as smokers. That's around 70,000 people. It's thought adults
01:38in manual jobs are three times more likely to be smokers compared to those
01:42in other occupations. The cabinet report said the vision is simple. The council
01:47wants Liverpool to become a smoke-free city allowing all its communities to
01:51live longer, healthier and wealthier lives in a city where they can play and
01:55work without exposure to the harms of tobacco smoke.
