Darwin’s Glenti festival draws huge crowds to celebrate Greek culture

Darwin's beachside esplanade has transformed into a celebration of Greek culture this weekend. The Glenti festival is a yearly event, which draws huge crowds over two days of feasting and dancing.

00:00 Hungry Darwin residents turned up in their thousands to graze on Glenty's offerings.
00:07 You know as a community we want to share our culture.
00:11 Within our culture we like to get together, we like to dance, we're very festive, we like to eat.
00:18 From octopus that's not so often cooked at home, to the famous honey puffs and other sought after Greek desserts.
00:26 They've come for the desserts, alright we've been hammered. So we have the milfay and the cream cones, so all our creamy desserts.
00:33 We have our traditional galacto burrico which is our vanilla slice with the syrup.
00:37 Then we have our baklava's and our nut rolls and our kateifis which are all nut and syrupy pastry desserts.
00:44 Down on Meat Street crowds stroll through billowing smoke to find a feast.
00:50 We've got 1600 kilos of lamb for the weekend and we've got 700 kilos of chicken.
00:55 But don't ask these proud cooks for their recipe.
00:58 We can't give away all our secrets, special Greek spices.

01:04 Nah, just a bit of oregano, salt and a bit of other stuff.

01:17 The family event relies on volunteers with funds raised for charity.
01:21 We're so far away from Greece but we've got second, third, fourth generation Greeks in Australia that still speak Greek, still dance, it's so important.
