00:05Alright, CMA Fest, how many days have you been here?
00:08Well, I live in Nashville, so I just rolled right in.
00:11When CMA Fest came in, I came in, so yeah.
00:13I'm also local here.
00:14When this festival starts, it changes the city,
00:17and I'm sure you've experienced it in previous years.
00:19It's got to be wild to walk in as who you are now, post-Idol.
00:23It's very cool.
00:24Like last year, I didn't even know it was happening,
00:28and then it rolled in, and I realized what was going on.
00:30And so being able to kind of have an inside pass a little bit
00:33and getting to perform at it, I mean, it's a dream come true.
00:36Super cool.
00:37We just watched you perform in front of an audience full in this convention hall.
00:40Everybody loving, hanging on every word.
00:42That's got to feel good.
00:43What has the fan response been to you since you left Idol?
00:46Oh man, it's so cool.
00:48I mean, singing songs, like, I mean, the songs I wrote,
00:50I wasn't really ever anticipating singing them for,
00:53I mean, wrote them for soul healing for the most part.
00:56And so getting to watch people sing them back
00:59and really connect with the words and have them apply to their own life,
01:02I mean, that's why you do it.
01:03It's just so cool and just reinvigorating to make me want to keep going.
01:07I mean, Idol is go, go, go.
01:09It's exhausting, and coming off of it, like, it feels like you want to break,
01:12but doing something like this, it's like, let's keep going, man.
01:15This is awesome.
01:16You've got such a great storyline with Katy Perry
01:19that everyone obviously connected to
01:21and the great arc of, like, winning her over
01:24and becoming, like, performing with her
01:27for her final performance on American Idol.
01:30It's just such a crazy trajectory that your whole time on the show took.
01:33Was there anything that she said to you off camera
01:36that'll stick with you or maybe that would be a special moment?
01:39It was watching it grow kind of week to week.
01:43Like, once we got to L.A. and the shows were live
01:45and she'd come up after a show and she'd kind of give me a look like,
01:49what are you doing?
01:50And then at the end, it's like, are you serious?
01:52Like, seriously, she came up to me and she was like,
01:54what happens if you win this thing?
01:56I was like, I don't know.
01:57I have no idea.
01:58I haven't gotten that far yet.
01:59Singing the way I want to sing and doing the faces I want to do,
02:02and America loves it.
02:03It's so funny.
02:04Yeah, I feel it.
02:05I mean, we're close now.
02:06She's a good friend, and so it's definitely not what I was expecting
02:09when I left the room for the first time.
02:11Didn't feel like we left on the right foot, but yeah.
02:13And I wonder if there's any piece of advice that sticks with you
02:15that you got throughout the season.
02:17Yeah, I mean, really just the confidence of them
02:20kind of encouraging me to do what I do as an artist.
02:23It's tough in Nashville because you watch people climb the charts
02:26and you're like, I want that to be me.
02:28Should I be doing something that they're doing?
02:30And over and over they're just like, hey, do what you do well.
02:32Do what makes you unique, even if it's weird facial expressions
02:35by the end of it.
02:36But just lean into that and be you as an artist.
02:39And so I've just taken that and kind of ran with it for the show,
02:42really believed it more than ever, and so, yeah, it's been cool.
02:45What's the biggest thing that's changed about your normal life
02:47now that you just bounced back in after this huge whirlwind?
02:50Or have you really bounced back in yet?
02:52I've been trying.
02:53It's kind of weird because you come in and then there's CMA Fest
02:56and you're bouncing around, but that's what I've dreamed of.
02:59I mean, I've been wanting to do what I love to do as a career
03:02for a long time, and it's always felt like a distant dream.
03:07It feels real right now a little bit.
03:09At the same time, it doesn't feel real because it's happening so fast,
03:12but it's like this is something that I can actually do,
03:14and I'm more inspired than ever to make it happen
03:16because it just feels like it's right in front of me.
