Sir Keir Starmer has insisted his party won't raise income tax, national insurance or VAT levels if they win the election, and neither will there be a return to austerity. Sir Keir said his first priority would be to grow the economy if he secures victory and forms a government after the election. Report by Etemadil. 00:00 Let me be crystal clear about this. We will not be raising taxes on working
00:05 people. That means we won't be raising income tax, national insurance or VAT.
00:12 We will launch our manifesto very soon and that will have no tax surprises in it
00:17 because all of our plans are fully funded and fully costed and none of them
00:21 require tax rises over and above the ones that we've already announced.
00:26 What we do need to do just to take up the challenge that's being put to us is we do
00:30 need to grow the economy. We do need to make sure that the economy and living
00:34 standards across the whole country are growing and that's why step one in
00:38 government if we get to serve our country will be to stabilise and grow
00:44 our economy. But can you rule out spending cuts? We are not returning to
00:48 austerity. We will grow our economy. That will start by stabilising the economy
00:53 because the Tories have lost control of the economy and it's working people are
00:56 paying the price for that. We've got to turn that around, stabilise the economy and then
01:00 get the growth that we need desperately across the whole country.
