00:00 Hello and welcome along to Invicta Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:20 up all of Kent's sporting action.
00:22 I'm Bartholomew Hall and here's what to expect on this Friday 7th June.
00:27 Folkestone's Invincibles meet the Under 13 squad that hasn't lost a match in a year.
00:34 Our way to say thanks, we meet the friends who are preparing for a charity match after
00:39 facing cancer treatment.
00:42 And swinging into action, T20 cricket finally returns to Canterbury.
00:49 But of course we always start with a round up of the headlines.
00:52 Kent British Touring Car racer Jake Hill is looking to keep the momentum going into this
00:56 weekend as the BTCC heads to Thruxton.
01:00 It comes after a double-winning weekend last time out at Snetterton, where even a time
01:04 penalty wasn't enough to set Jake away from the top step of the podium in two of the three
01:09 races.
01:10 Ahead of the return this weekend to the Hampshire circuit, Jake says that despite the track
01:14 not being optimal for his BMW package, he will still be working hard to stay competitive.
01:19 The Plattsheath race driver currently sits fourth in the championship, and just 11 points
01:24 adrift from championship leader and current holder Ash Sutton.
01:28 Holcombe Hockey Club have enlisted the help of England international Matt Ramshaw, who
01:32 signs with the Chatham Club from Southgate.
01:35 The 24-year-old forward, who scored twice on his senior international debut in 2022,
01:41 is the third signing of the summer period for Holcombe.
01:43 Ramshaw has been capped five times by England, whilst also having played for both Great Britain
01:48 and England's Under 21 squad.
01:50 The Holcombe men's team will be back in action this September, where they'll be back once
01:54 again playing in the England Premiership.
01:56 Moving on to rugby now, Kent are one win away from back-to-back Bill Beaumont County Championship
02:02 Division 1 titles, as they're set to face Yorkshire at this month's final in Twickenham.
02:08 Last year's win was the county's first since 1927, but this year will make it 120 years
02:14 since Kent reached a consecutive final.
02:17 It comes after Surrey conceded Kent's final group stage game at the weekend, meaning Kent
02:21 are now heading straight to the finals, with a three-week break before the chance to make
02:25 history on the 15th.
02:28 And last of our headlines today, Neil Harris will be returning to Priestfield this summer,
02:31 but he won't be alone, as the Gilles will be taking on his Millwall side in a freshly
02:36 announced pre-season friendly.
02:39 After a rollercoaster season for the former Gillingham manager, which saw him sacked from
02:42 his job at Priestfield, Harris has had a brief stint with Cambridge United before finally
02:47 settling back with his beloved Millwall, where they finished overall 13th in the championship.
02:53 The match, scheduled for 13 July, will be the start of Gillingham's pre-season, but
02:57 also due to take on Watford, Dartford, Southend United and Woking before the start of the
03:02 League 2 season in August.
03:04 Don't forget you can keep up to date with all the latest football news by reading Kent
03:09 Online, but you can also have your weekly digest of Gilles news sent directly to your
03:14 email inbox.
03:15 Yes, exactly, even in the off-season there's still plenty of news for you to read, and
03:20 there's also plenty of non-league news for you to read too.
03:23 Just search Kent Online email alerts and sign up for the one you want in your inbox.
03:30 Well now, in less than half an hour, Kent Spitfires are returning to Canterbury for
03:34 their first home T20 blast match of the summer.
03:37 T20 is of course the shortest format in county cricket, with just 120 balls thrown by each
03:43 side over 20 overs.
03:46 Our county has won the competition twice, with the most recent time being in 2021.
03:51 Head coach Matt Walker has told us he thinks he has the right men to take the county to
03:56 the finals once again.
04:03 Summer evenings, colourful kits and switching out the red ball for the white.
04:07 The T20 blast is one of cricket's most popular county formats, and in recent years Kent have
04:12 had some great success after winning the whole thing in 2021.
04:17 Now the competition is due to return to Canterbury as the Kent Spitfires face their first home
04:21 match of the season against Somerset this Friday night.
04:25 So far it's been a mixed start for Kent, achieving a club record win in the opener
04:29 against Middlesex with 98 runs, before going on to narrowly lose out to Hampshire by three
04:34 wickets with just one ball left to be bowled.
04:37 This leaves the club second in the south table, and as long as they stay in the top four,
04:42 they'll then progress to the knockout stage.
04:44 It's something head coach Matt Walker is fairly confident about.
04:47 We want to obviously get ourselves in a position of strength as quickly as you can in this
04:51 comp with points on the board, and certainly try and make this as much of a fortress as
04:54 possible.
04:55 We've got a great squad I think.
04:56 I honestly think we've got a real chance of having a lot of success this season, and
05:03 with the players if they stay fit we've got a pretty nice core of players that can hopefully
05:08 elevate us towards the top of the table and onwards.
05:11 One person who is making the headlines this season is returning T20 captain Sam Billings.
05:16 The wicketkeeper stepped down from his role as club captain last season, before taking
05:20 a three month career pause.
05:22 I've got a little girl at home now, 13 weeks old, so it's been amazing to have a bit of
05:26 time at home.
05:27 Family time the last couple of months has been incredible.
05:31 It's nice to be back on the field.
05:34 You've got that bug to play cricket again.
05:36 Obviously played probably three or four months ago in Dubai.
05:40 But like I said, raring to go and it's always great to play here at Canterbury in front
05:45 of a home crowd.
05:47 Over the winter break, Kent have had some new recruits too, with the likes of Australian
05:50 fast bowler Xavier Bartlett and England international Matt Parkinson becoming spitfires.
05:56 The latter has already made his mark with a hat trick in the series opener against Middlesex.
06:01 We're very careful who we sign.
06:02 It's not just about the player, it's about the character as well.
06:05 They all came with great reviews and great people and I think that's the real secret
06:10 to success.
06:11 Last season, Kent missed out on the knockout stages by two points, so it's clear fans will
06:15 be hoping they can turn it around and maybe even make it to finals day this time round.
06:20 But if nothing else, for a lot of people the return of T20 cricket in Canterbury is simply
06:25 a sign that summer is finally here.
06:28 Jack Darkin for KMTV.
06:32 Well earlier on, Jack joined me from the Spitfire ground in Canterbury as things began to warm
06:36 up for tonight's match.
06:38 Jack, it's good to see you there in position at the Spitfire grounds.
06:42 Before the crowds all get in there this evening, tell me what's the feeling like and what can
06:46 we expect from tonight's squad?
06:48 Well, it's a huge sense of excitement as always when the T20 blast comes back to the Spitfire
06:53 ground.
06:54 In terms of the team news, there's no real surprises in this Kent line-up.
06:58 Only a couple of changes with Harry Finch coming in, but the usual names are all there
07:02 like Sam Billings, Daniel Beldrum and as I was at Crawley, once again, starts for us.
07:06 It's looking like it's going to be a really good game.
07:09 We also caught up with the T20 captain Sam Billings about the game against Sonnerset
07:14 tonight.
07:15 Here's what he had to say about our opponents.
07:16 We've always had epic games against them through the years and I think they're very similar
07:20 to us in a really well rounded side and they gel pretty well.
07:26 So yeah, it's going to be a tough game but they're the kind of games you want to be a
07:30 part of and hopefully we can get the two points.
07:33 And you can see just behind you there a couple of players warming up, getting ready for this
07:37 evening.
07:38 Are they Somerset players or Kent players?
07:39 They are, by the looks of it they are the Somerset players I think.
07:44 Exciting stuff and of course it's looking nice and dry there.
07:47 Lovely blue skies at the moment as we head into the evening of course.
07:50 Those floodlights might be coming on at some stage.
07:53 Tell me how important is it that Kent get a win past Somerset this evening?
07:58 Well it's really important.
08:00 Not just because I think we mentioned earlier that Somerset are the holding champions of
08:03 the T20 Blast but also as well, look at the table as well.
08:07 The table is so stacked at the moment as well that two points Kent could get tonight if
08:13 they win, could see them go back to second in the table and increase that gap between
08:17 everyone else.
08:19 Of course, yes, staying second would be brilliant news to start the season off, especially for
08:23 the first home match there in Canterbury today.
08:26 Jack, thank you very much for those details.
08:28 We'll be watching along of course into the evening and we'll have a round up in Monday's
08:32 show.
08:33 Thank you very much.
08:34 Cheers, thank you.
08:36 Great stuff there from Jack and as I said we will have a round up of tonight's match
08:40 this Monday's episode of Invicta Sport.
08:43 Now there's just one week to go until the start of the 2024 Euros in Germany.
08:48 Don't forget to pick up your copy of this week's KM newspaper for a special Euros supplement
08:53 which features youth teams from across the country.
08:56 Teams like the Folkestone Invicta U13s have become double title winners this season after
09:02 not losing a single game and I had the privilege of going down to meet them.
09:06 Let's take a listen.
09:07 Arsene Wenger's Invincibles, Xavi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen and Folkestone Invicta's
09:13 Under 13s.
09:15 Three teams which have cemented themselves in their club's history books after becoming
09:19 champions of their leagues by not losing a single match.
09:27 With 14 wins and one draw Folkestone had a 15 point lead by the tail end of the East
09:32 Kent Youth League season this year.
09:34 That's also their second championship win in a row after winning division two and now
09:39 division one of the league.
09:41 They're clearly the team to beat but what sets them apart?
09:44 "Good teamwork, good discipline."
09:46 "I think it's our togetherness as a team and I think obviously our coaching play, the way
09:51 we play and obviously the players we brought in last season, it really helped us."
09:56 "All the team build up and all the goals Xavi score is just amazing to be fair."
10:02 "The work rate between the squad."
10:04 "Resilience and teamwork."
10:06 The unbeaten Folkestone Invicta youth led by their coaches John Ross and Greg Newman
10:10 even went one step further to claim a double by winning their league cup with an 8-3 thrashing
10:16 of opponents Snowden and Aylsham FC.
10:18 "I think it's the way they've bonded over the last couple of seasons.
10:21 They hang about together outside school, at school and they've really performed and bonded
10:26 together out of the football itself.
10:28 They listen, that's the main thing.
10:31 The dudes are tall, they learn every day and they get on really well with each other."
10:42 Looking forward to the future, head coach Greg has mixed emotions with some players
10:46 set to leave and join the club's higher division, Kent Youth League side.
10:50 "I think they've all got a future.
10:52 They're all playing at a reasonable level.
10:54 Some of the players are now going up to the Kent League, so they're playing for County,
10:58 some of them play for Shepway, some of them are going to play Kent League.
11:01 So there's nothing they can't do.
11:03 Luckily for us, they all want to stay and continue to play.
11:06 So we've kept the same team for four or five years pretty much now, so hopefully we can
11:10 go on and do it again next year.
11:11 It would be fantastic.
11:12 To get to the cup final again would be really nice.
11:13 It was a great day out and to have all the families there was fantastic.
11:16 So I think the main aim, if we can get to the cup final, we'd be really happy."
11:20 And after coming all the way out to set up a training session in the rain for our camera,
11:25 it's clear this team's spirit and love for the game is just as unbreakable as their unbeaten
11:30 record.
11:31 Bartholomew Hall for KMTV in Folkestone.
11:35 Clearly some future stars in that team for sure.
11:38 But we've reached half time now, so it's time for a break.
11:40 But coming up, we'll be hearing the incredible story of two friends who are raising money
11:44 for a cancer ward that saved not only the lives of their family members, but one of
11:48 them too.
11:49 And of course, we'll have a brand new edition of Action Replay.
11:52 See you in a few minutes.
11:53 Bye bye.

15:10 >> Hello and welcome back to Invictus Sport live on KMTV.
15:13 Now, it's time to remind you that you can keep up to date with all the latest
15:17 sports news, interviews, and features from right here on Invictus Sport by heading
15:20 over to our website, kmtv.co.uk.
15:24 When you're there, click on the Sports tab, because there you'll see videos like this
15:27 one about a Gravesend Wheelchair Rugby Club that's expanding.
15:30 >> I'm here in Gravesend with Wheelchair Rugby Club, Gravesend Dynamite.
15:36 I'm here to take a look at what wheelchair rugby's all about and
15:38 give it a go myself.
15:40 So, let's take a look and see what it's all about.
15:42 The wheelchair rugby league is very similar to regular rugby,
15:45 as it replicates a lot of the game, making it a rough and tough sport.
15:48 The club here in Gravesend was found by Jason Owen, offers both those that
15:52 are able-bodied and disabled a chance to play together in a sport and
15:55 can be in a league, and bring the community here in Gravesend together.
15:58 >> 11 years ago we started, I founded the club because I felt that there needed to
16:04 be an inclusive sports club in Gravesend, a club where men and
16:09 women can play together, children and adults, people with physical disabilities,
16:13 people with no disabilities, people with hidden disabilities,
16:17 like epilepsy, ADHD, hearing impairments.
16:21 I just felt there needed to be a club where all these people were able to come
16:26 together and enjoy rugby.
16:28 >> The club has found a lot of success in the league,
16:30 winning the National Challenge Trophy four times in the last five years.
16:34 And it's still looking to build and grow as they've been supported by the governing
16:37 body of the league, the RFL, bringing in more chairs and opportunities for the club.
16:41 As the club now has two teams, the Gravesend Dynamite team and the Detonators.
16:46 And with the league being its biggest ever,
16:47 expanding with more teams being added into Kent and Essex, the sport continues to grow.
16:53 And the players here are embracing the sense of community and
16:56 enjoying the atmosphere here at the club.
16:57 >> I wanted something for the winter months to keep me busy, and
17:01 I thought I'd have a go at Wheelchair Rugby League, absolutely loved it.
17:04 And the club here is fantastic, they're so inclusive, yeah, no, it's a great place.
17:09 >> So Gravesend Dynamite is a great club, it's really friendly, everyone gets along.
17:14 It's a great experience when you come along on a Tuesday night and train.
17:18 It's even better on a game when everyone's together, transport team, yeah.
17:22 >> Post lockdown, I just wanted to get some social skills back.
17:25 You miss everybody, and yeah, I thought I'd give it a go.
17:28 I wasn't ever one for sport, but I thought I'd give this one a go.
17:33 And yeah, I've just loved it ever since, I've been here for about a year.
17:35 >> I also got in one of the chairs and participated in training.
17:38 And although I had no prior experience,
17:40 I was able to pick up the sport with the help of the Gravesend team.
17:43 [MUSIC]
17:53 Now, I may not be playing in any championships anytime soon, but
18:01 the Gravesend team is open to all and
18:02 are waiting for more people to join the club and compete in the league.
18:06 Tony Muzanichita, rolling out for KMTV.
18:09 >> And joining me now in the studio is Nicole Benjamin.
18:13 Nicole, thank you very much for being here.
18:14 Really good to have you on the show.
18:15 We were hoping to have Tony as well from the club, Tony White.
18:20 There was a bit of traffic today, so it's just yourself, but
18:22 no less brilliant to have you here.
18:25 Tell me, what was it that first got you into the sport?
18:27 Because compared to Tony, you haven't done it as long as him.
18:30 >> No, he's been doing it quite a few more years.
18:33 So it was great to have his and others' experience as well.
18:35 But I actually do a couple of other wheelchair sports.
18:39 >> Okay, yeah. >> And a couple of years ago,
18:41 we had the World Cup over in England.
18:44 And a couple of my friends through the other sports were playing for
18:47 some of the home nation's teams.
18:49 So I went to watch, and when you get into all that excitement and
18:52 things, you have to get in touch and see if a local team will take you.
18:56 So I got in touch with Gravesend, and within a couple of hours,
19:00 I was getting messages saying, yeah, come along.
19:02 So I actually went along with my stepdad at the time as well.
19:05 And we both went and played, and it's such an amazing team.
19:08 I've been going weekly since.
19:10 >> Now, this Saturday, friends Olly, Solly, and Sam Murray are hosting
19:15 a charity football match at the home of Margate FC, Hearthstown Park.
19:20 Both avid football fans, the two 28-year-olds, are hoping to raise money
19:23 to give back to the chemotherapy ward that saved the lives of their family members
19:27 and one of them, the Vikings ward at Queen Elizabeth Queen Mary Hospital.
19:32 I caught up with both earlier to find out a little bit more.
19:35 So boys, welcome onto the program.
19:38 Really good to have you here.
19:40 First of all, can you just give me a bit of an outline of what people would expect
19:43 this weekend if they choose to come down to Hearthstown Park?
19:45 >> So we're doing a charity football match.
19:50 It's in aid of the Viking Day Unit at our local hospital, Margate QQM.
19:55 We did one a few years ago, like I say, but this one, yeah, it's looking bigger and better.
20:00 My mum was treated at the unit herself and obviously Olly as well.
20:06 So yeah, we're just trying to raise some funds.
20:08 We've got a raffle going on at the end of the game.
20:11 But it's really just a kick about between friends, just trying to raise some money for a good cause.
20:15 >> Nice, brilliant stuff.
20:16 And I wanted to ask you a little bit about the Viking ward, if that's OK.
20:20 I know it means a lot to you both personally.
20:22 Obviously, Sam, you said it treated your mum and Olly, not only treated your brother, but yourself as well.
20:28 So tell me what it means to you raising money for that ward.
20:32 >> Yeah, quite a lot, really.
20:35 Like I say, three people I know, including myself, have all been treated there.
20:39 So without, I'd say, without the ward I wouldn't be here.
20:42 I probably would have had treatment elsewhere.
20:43 But obviously having the ward on my doorstep is really helpful.
20:46 And it's a brilliant ward, nice people.
20:49 And as I say, the football is really just a bonus.
20:51 It's just trying to raise as much as we can to try and repay something back to them.
20:55 Obviously, we'll never be able to do what we can, would like to do, really.
20:59 But, yeah, as long as we raise as much as we can to help them, that's what matters, really.
21:03 >> Absolutely. And Olly, what was that like for you having to go through that?
21:09 You know, obviously, with your brother, you and your family had kind of not got through it.
21:14 Obviously, it takes a lot out of your lives.
21:16 But then to have to go through it again, I suppose, when you found out about your own diagnosis.
21:20 >> Yeah, definitely. I mean, one time's bad enough.
21:23 And then, like I say, getting it myself, it's just, you sort of go, "Blimey, what happens now?
21:29 Am I going to be all right?"
21:30 And then, I guess, after the first couple of weeks and you start treatment, you sort of just have to crack on and just deal with it, really.
21:36 But, yeah, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
21:38 But we're both all right now.
21:40 Tracy's fine.
21:41 That's the main thing, really.
21:42 >> And I've got to ask then, obviously, this is a charity football match, not your first one.
21:47 What has sport meant to your lives and football in general about, you know, obviously, the awful things that you've been through.
21:53 But having that as kind of, I know lots of people like to just get lost in their sport and their football.
21:57 >> Yeah, I mean, like, these times have been tough going through all this sort of stuff.
22:03 And football's just always been like a nice release.
22:05 We go and play once a week.
22:07 We still play with friends.
22:08 Us a lot.
22:08 And it's just, yeah, it's always made things easier.
22:12 And it's nice to be able to combine the two together, play some football and, like I say, raise some money for a good cause.
22:18 >> I mean, that draws me quite nicely onto my next question.
22:21 I was going to ask how good are you guys playing football?
22:24 You know, one thing setting up a charity match, but you've got to be able to actually perform on the day.
22:29 >> Yeah, it'll be a decent level.
22:32 I say for a charity match, it is a decent level.
22:34 We've got some real good players playing, some semi-professional players playing.
22:38 So it is a kicker, but obviously there's a competitive side to it.
22:42 So, yeah, it will be a decent game for the viewers.
22:46 So, yeah.
22:48 >> Good stuff.
22:49 I mean, I had a little bit of read up.
22:50 So obviously you've got yourselves, you've got some semi-professional players, as you were saying.
22:55 What's it look like between you two?
22:57 You're on the same team, you're against each other?
22:58 >> We're actually the captains of both teams.
23:01 So we'll be going head to head.
23:03 >> And you're quite...
23:04 >> Last time as well.
23:05 >> Are you quite competitive between each other as well?
23:07 Who do you think is going to take it?
23:08 >> I took the first one.
23:11 >> Yeah, he won last time.
23:12 So I'm looking to try and win this one.
23:14 >> Try and get it back, try and get it equal.
23:15 And then maybe even have a third one to try and get the decider.
23:19 We'll see.
23:19 We'll see what happens.
23:20 I mean, of course, right, you've already got £1,000 raised for this one.
23:25 Do you have a goal in mind of what you might want to be able to give back to the Viking Ward?
23:28 >> To be honest, online on the GoFundMe we've done, £1,000 was the goal.
23:33 So to have reached that already without even kicking a ball on the day is amazing, to be honest.
23:40 So just anything now is a bonus.
23:42 >> Well, good stuff.
23:44 Best of luck for the weekend.
23:45 Just finally, can you just let us know how people can get involved and come along on the day?
23:50 >> Yeah, the football match is at Margate Football Club in Thanet, in South East Kent.
23:55 I've got the postcode off the top of my head.
23:57 But there's a GoFundMe page on the Isle of Thanet Gazette newspaper page on Facebook as well.
24:01 So the GoFundMe link is in there.
24:03 And as I say, there's a raffle.
24:05 If you can come, that's great.
24:06 If you can't, please donate as much as you can.
24:08 And yeah, we're just trying to get as much as we can for the unit.
24:11 So that's the main goal.
24:13 >> Well, best of luck for the weekend, guys.
24:14 Enjoy it.
24:15 >> Thank you.
24:16 >> Thank you.
24:18 >> Now, we've reached full time on today's episode, but there's just a few minutes of
24:21 extra time to take a look at this week's Action Replay.
24:24 It's of course the segment where we take a look at clips and pictures that you, the KMTV
24:28 audience have sent in of you taking part in sport.
24:31 Let's see what we've got in store on this week's Action Replay.
24:33 Here's Sophia.
24:34 >> First up on this week's Action Replay, you're never too old to play a sport, as former
24:40 semi-pro footballer Malcolm Longhurst proves as he marks 60 years in the game.
24:46 The winger made his debut for Sheppey United men's side back in 1962, and he's still on
24:51 the pitch at the age of 80.
24:54 While he recognises that he'll have to stop one day, Malcolm's vowed to continue playing
24:58 the sport he loves for as long as he can.
25:01 Next up, it turns out you're never too young to play a sport either.
25:04 12-year-old Rory Smith has become a national tennis champion.
25:08 The Derrick Table Tennis Club player from the new Beacon School in Sevenoaks was victorious
25:12 at the Under-13 IAPs competition in Watford.
25:16 And finally, South Kent Harriers' Margaret Connolly took part in the Birmingham 10k run
25:22 to raise funds for Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
25:26 Connolly was part of the team taking on Wales during the Great Birmingham Run, and her 52
25:31 minutes and 52 seconds contributed to England's victory.
25:35 Well that's all from this week's Action Replay.
25:37 Don't forget, it could be you in next week's edition.
25:40 Send in your pictures and videos to social media or sport@kmtv.co.uk.
25:47 And exactly as Sophia said there, if you want to appear in next week's Action Replay, you
25:52 absolutely can.
25:53 All you need to do is tag us in your clips and pics on social media @kmtvkent or just
25:57 send us an email along to sport@kmtv.co.uk.
26:01 Just make sure you tell us what part of Kent you come from and what it is you do.
26:05 And of course, we did hear Sophia there.
26:07 It will be the last time hearing her on Action Replay here at the Invicta Sport team.
26:11 We always appreciate her being here.
26:13 But she is moving on.
26:14 She's leaving KMTV and we wish her all the best in the future.
26:18 Well that is it.
26:19 That is full time on today's episode of Invicta Sport.
26:21 If you want more from KMTV, you can watch all of our other special programmes by heading
26:24 along to our website.
26:25 You can see the Kent Politics Show, Made in Kent, Kent on Climate and the Kent Film Club
26:29 by heading to kmtv.co.uk.
26:31 I'll be back on Monday with a brand new episode of Invicta Sport.
26:36 I'll see you then.
26:37 Bye bye.
