00:00We are still watching out for volcanoes.
00:12Stay tuned for the activities of the Canlaon and Taal Volcanoes.
00:14We will be talking to Dr. Winchell Sevilla,
00:17supervising science research specialist of PHIVOLCS.
00:20Good morning and welcome to Balitang Hali.
00:22Good morning to Rafi and good morning to our listeners.
00:26What does elevated sulfur dioxide degassing in the Taal Volcanoes mean?
00:33Yesterday, on June 6, we surveyed how much sulfur dioxide is emitted in the Taal Volcanoes.
00:47We measured 11,072 tons per day.
00:51If we compare it to the average of sulfur dioxide emissions in the Taal Volcanoes this year,
00:58it's only 8,294.
01:00So it's higher than the total average for this year so far.
01:06Yesterday, we observed a vague or haziness in the towns around the Taal Volcanoes,
01:14in particular in Alitagtag, Tingloy, San Nicolas, Laurel,
01:19and other towns around it.
01:22Aside from the vagueness, what is the indication of the high level of sulfur dioxide?
01:28It means that the high volume of SO2 or SO2 gas, Taal, continues to come out.
01:36What's important here is our message to our fellowmen,
01:40especially those who live around the Taal Volcanoes,
01:44if they experience a vagueness, limit your exposure as much as possible.
01:50And protect ourselves, cover our noses,
01:53because we can use N95 masks or face masks.
01:58If we experience irritation in our lungs, drink a lot of water.
02:04This can have a negative effect, especially on our fellowmen
02:10who have problems with their lungs.
02:16Is this a possible reason to raise the alert level of the Taal Volcanoes?
02:20Not really.
02:23Aside from the high level of sulfur dioxide released by the Taal Volcanoes,
02:29other parameters like volcanic earthquakes or the eruption of its edifice,
02:34all of these are included in the alert level 1.
02:38We released an advisory to warn our fellowmen
02:43that the high level of sulfur dioxide released by the Taal Volcanoes
02:46and to take the right steps to protect ourselves.
02:52What are your plans for Tagaytay this weekend?
02:56We will be patching up if we experience irritation.
03:05So as much as possible, we will avoid it.
03:08Anyway, we are still here in Taal 24x7,
03:12so if there are any significant changes in this condition,
03:15we will immediately report it to our fellowmen.
03:18So you will continue to monitor FIVOX.
03:20What are the latest updates on your monitoring of Mt. Canlaon?
03:24Okay, on Mt. Canlaon,
03:26the alert level 2 is still high.
03:31There is a decrease in the number of volcanic earthquakes that we recorded,
03:37so 14 volcanic earthquakes.
03:39The volume of SO2 gas that we recorded is also decreasing.
03:47But despite this, the alert level 2 is still high.
03:55So our recommendation to our fellowmen is
03:59just in case there is an ashfall or a pre-attic eruption,
04:08it is important to protect ourselves so we don't get affected.
04:12And of course, to our fellowmen who live in low-lying areas or near rivers,
04:18we will consult with our local government units
04:21so we can make the right steps
04:25in case there is a heavy rainfall.
04:31Although there is no direct activity in Canlaon,
04:35is there a sufficient ashfall deposit in Dalisdis
04:38to cause more lahar flow?
04:42Possibly.
04:43So that's what our fellowmen are doing.
04:45They are mapping the extent of how far or how thick the ashfall deposit is.
04:54And what are the low-lying areas that could be affected
05:00in case there is a flea of lahar episodes.
05:04Just a quick one because a lot of people are noticing that
05:06every June 3, Mt. Canlaon erupts.
05:10What is the explanation here by PHIVOX?
05:12There are instances where Mt. Canlaon erupts on June 3.
05:16But this is just a coincidence.
05:18Just a coincidence.
05:20Okay. Thank you very much, Dr. Winchell Sevilla of PHIVOX.
05:25Thank you too.
