00:00 "I might kiss you."
00:02 "I might be bad at it."
00:07 Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the goody two-shoes girls
00:12 and the leather jacket wearing boys who fell for each other in movies.
00:16 We'll obviously be discussing relationship trajectories, so here is your spoiler warning for that.
00:21 "The extreme always seems to make an impression."
00:27 #30. Beatrice "Triss" Pryor and Tobias "Four" Eaton
00:31 Divergent
00:32 While Triss would quickly develop a rebellious spirit over the course of this first movie,
00:36 something it can be argued she always had inside her, we can't ignore her roots.
00:41 "You're still free to choose."
00:43 "But you don't really want that."
00:45 Being raised as abnegation made her, by definition, morally good.
00:49 On the other hand, when we first meet Four, he's shed his past and embraced Dauntless fully.
00:54 He has the whole tough-guy routine down pat, and even comes across as straight-up mean in his early scenes.
01:00 "Were you a transfer too? Or Dauntless porn?"
01:04 "Are you kidding?"
01:08 "No."
01:09 "What makes you think you can talk to me?"
01:13 It doesn't take long for him to take an interest in Triss, though.
01:16 And when he does, he goes to great lengths to protect her, which is everything we love about this trope.
01:22 "I don't know, I mean, you haven't told me anything about yourself, and now you just want to let me inside of your head?"
01:27 "Why are you afraid of that?"
01:29 "You're not?"
01:31 "No."
01:33 The opposing roles are pretty much non-existent later on in the series,
01:37 but the first movie sells the dynamic nicely.
01:40 "So that's it? You're just giving up?"
01:48 "I'm the bad guy. I don't save the day, I don't fly off into the sunset, and I don't get the girl."
01:55 A supervillain dating anyone could make them look good in comparison.
01:59 Lucky for us, Roxy actually is good.
02:02 She's brave in the face of danger and always tries to be on the right side of the fight.
02:07 When we first meet her, she's Megamind's favorite kidnap victim and clearly more astute than he is.
02:12 Though they do have some great banter.
02:15 "Predictable? Predictable? Oh, you call this predictable?"
02:20 "We're alligators, yes. I was thinking about it on the way over."
02:25 As the events of the movie progress, the two team up to fight a greater evil, Titan.
02:30 We doubt Roxy would have ever developed feelings for Megamind if he'd remained stuck in his ways,
02:36 but his true colors come out, and by the end of the movie, he is officially turned into a hero.
02:41 "The Megamind I knew would never have run from a fight, even when he knew he had absolutely no chance of winning."
02:49 "It was your best quality. You need to be that guy right now."
02:55 This is not a relationship we strive to emulate, but boy does it have the good girl/bad boy dynamic mastered.
03:07 David McCall is about as bad as they get, and as disturbed.
03:11 "I didn't know it was Gary. I swear, all I saw was some guy with his paws all over you."
03:17 "I'm knowing how many bad guys are out there. Guys that would take advantage of somebody like you."
03:23 "Guys that I would kill if they ever did anything to hurt you."
03:26 With an overprotective father though, Nicole is as ready as ever to gain some life experience of her own.
03:32 This might explain why she ignores all of David's red flags. That, or they're difficult for a 16-year-old to spot in the first place.
03:40 "You're the one who's hiding something."
03:43 "It's just that I was taught that if something seems too good to be true, then it probably isn't."
03:51 'Fear' is 90s thriller at its finest, and has been regarded as a cult classic today,
03:56 largely in part due to the performances of young Reese Witherspoon and Mark Wahlberg.
04:01 They play their parts perfectly, which makes the ensuing descent into horrible tragedy all the more chilling.
04:07 "No!"
04:09 "What? You want to go with me, don't you?"
04:13 "All of you are just vicious!"
04:19 "I'm sorry!"
04:21 "How can you be sorry? You have no feelings. You're just a worthless excuse for a human being."
04:26 Birdlace is a complete and utter jerk at the beginning of this movie, but at least he's self-aware.
04:32 The Marines have this horrible tradition where they try to pick up the ugliest girl,
04:36 and whoever brings the worst-looking date gets the prize money.
04:40 Birdlace is pretty desperate by the time he walks into Rose's mother's coffee shop and tries to convince Rose,
04:45 who's timid and soft-spoken, to go to a party with him.
04:48 [Music]
04:51 "Wow."
04:54 "Oh, please don't stop. You sound real good."
04:57 There's one big problem, though. Rose is actually pretty cool.
05:01 She's responsible but has big dreams, and she cleans up real nice.
05:06 "Jesus, God."
05:08 "You look great."
05:13 "Yeah?"
05:14 "Outstanding."
05:16 "Thanks."
05:17 As is typical in these stories, she finds out about the competition,
05:20 but Birdlace at least has the good sense to try making it up to her.
05:24 "I want you to stop swearing."
05:27 "Okay."
05:29 "Okay."
05:33 "Okay what?"
05:34 "Okay. Let's go to dinner."
05:36 "Sophomore year, spring fling, I was dancing with Randy Melrose.
05:46 You know, a romantic song came on, and I was like, 'Oh, it's gonna happen!'
05:49 But it- until it just didn't 'cause..."
05:52 She's awkward, athletic, and not like other girls.
05:56 He's tall, rough around the edges, and rides a motorcycle.
06:00 Right from Elle's introduction, we're told Noah's been protecting her
06:04 and his brother Lee since they were all kids.
06:06 "I don't start fights, okay? I only finish them.
06:10 And besides, no one should treat a girl like that.
06:13 Especially if that girl's you."
06:15 The scene continues on the first day back to school
06:17 when a guy touches Elle inappropriately.
06:19 Lee and then Noah quickly come to her defense,
06:22 and it's here that we also get to see how uncomfortable Elle is with being in trouble.
06:26 "Oh my god, am I being expelled?"
06:28 "Elle."
06:29 "I- I- oh, I've never been in trouble before. I feel like it's hot in here, I'm sweating."
06:32 "Elle."
06:33 "What?"
06:34 Yup, these two fit the character archetypes to a T.
06:37 Plus, there's the whole 'my best friend's brother' trope thrown into the mix too.
06:41 It doesn't get more delightfully cliche than this.
06:44 Number 25. Nicole Maris and Chase Hammond, 'Drive Me Crazy'.
06:48 Let's go childhood best friends who are neighbors and don't talk anymore.
06:52 Add in some contrasting personalities,
06:54 and we're sitting down in front of the screen with a bowl full of popcorn
06:57 and the kind of intrigue that would make you think we haven't seen this concept a thousand times already.
07:02 We eat it up every time.
07:04 "How does it compare?"
07:06 "To what?"
07:08 "Protests, club cigarettes, bongos, whatever does you beatniks do?"
07:12 "We prefer disaffected youth."
07:14 "Okay, so?"
07:16 "More pep."
07:17 When Nicole and Chase rekindle, it's to fake date in order to make other people jealous.
07:22 Would you look at that? Another cliche we love.
07:25 "It's like a fairy tale, right?"
07:27 "Huh?"
07:28 "I mean, you and Nicole. Falling in love with the girl next door."
07:32 "Oh, yeah, right."
07:34 Nicole helps Chase fit in with her preppy crowd,
07:37 and Nicole discovers she gets along with his misfit friends too.
07:40 As you might have guessed, the two fit into each other's worlds pretty well
07:44 and begin to realize they've fallen for each other.
07:47 "So, who are we making jealous?"
07:49 "Everyone, Nicole."
07:52 Due to their cystic fibrosis, Stella and Will have to stay six feet apart at all times.
08:02 When they first meet at the hospital, Stella doesn't take to Will's disregard for the rules.
08:07 "Let me guess. You're the kind of guy that ignores the rules 'cause it makes you feel in control. Am I right?"
08:12 "You're not wrong."
08:14 "You think that's cute?"
08:15 Where other teens could get detention for troublemaking,
08:18 for Will and Stella, it could cost them their lives.
08:21 "Will, stop! Oh my God!"
08:24 "God!"
08:29 "Relax!"
08:31 They definitely have different outlooks on their illnesses,
08:34 and it adds a unique dimension to how their relationship progresses.
08:38 "I need to know that things are in order, and I know that you're not doing your treatments,
08:41 and it's really, really messing me up."
08:44 The heart wants what it wants, and inevitably, the two develop feelings for each other.
08:49 Fair warning if you're gonna watch this one, it is emotional.
08:53 After losing her memory and being brought up in an orphanage,
09:02 Anya's ability to sniff out a scam could use a little work.
09:06 "Three, two, one."
09:09 "Dimitri!"
09:11 "Right in the palm of our hand."
09:13 Dimitri recruits her to pass her off as the lost Grand Duchess and claim the prize money.
09:18 "Just think, Vlad. No more forging papers, no more stolen goods.
09:21 We'll have three tickets out of here. One for you, one for me, and one for Anastasia!"
09:27 Despite Dimitri being a conman, there's something so undeniably charming about him.
09:31 Not only does he quickly morph into someone worth rooting for after meeting Anastasia,
09:36 he ends up with such a strong moral compass that he doesn't even take the reward money by the time he gets it.
09:41 "I accept your gratitude, your highness. But I don't want the money."
09:46 "What do you want then?"
09:49 "Unfortunately, nothing you can give."
09:52 The bad boy to man so in love he would do anything for the girl pipeline is one we never get tired of.
09:59 #22. Zachary "Zach" Seiler and Lainey Boggs. She's all that.
10:04 After his girlfriend ditches him for a reality TV star, Zach's left with a broken heart and bruised ego.
10:10 He posits that any girl could replace Taylor Vaughn, and to prove it,
10:14 "scary and inaccessible art student" Lainey Boggs is selected as his project.
10:19 While these characters fall more into the popular boy and outcast girl,
10:24 even their grades are not what you would expect from their reputations,
10:27 they still play off the good-bad dynamic well.
10:30 "So Lainey, listen. I was wondering if maybe you'd want to..."
10:33 "Let's go, Simon."
10:35 "Embarrass me horribly in front of all these people."
10:38 Zach is a player after all, and Lainey is far from being a troublemaker.
10:42 "Do you know how many gallons of chemicals are dumped into the oceans each year?"
10:46 "Don't you ever just kick back?"
10:49 Although this movie definitely falls victim to the "she's pretty under the glasses" platitude,
10:54 the connection the two form is sweet and genuine.
10:57 "Sometimes, when you open up to people, you let the bad in with the good, that's all."
11:05 "What'd I miss?"
11:13 "The oppressive patriarchal values that dictate our education."
11:17 "Good."
11:18 Kat doesn't fall under the term "good girl" super neatly.
11:21 She's loud, opinionated, and by no means afraid to stand up for herself.
11:26 "The way you expressed your opinion to Bobby Ridgeway?"
11:29 "By the way, his testicle retrieval operation went quite well, in case you're interested."
11:34 "I still maintain that he kicked himself in the balls."
11:36 With that said, she cares about her education,
11:39 and is passionate about political issues and human rights.
11:42 Patrick, meanwhile, is the school's resident bad boy,
11:45 though by the time we really get to know him,
11:47 it's clear he's not quite as daunting as his persona might have you believe.
11:51 Ignoring the superficial forces that push them together,
11:54 these two feel made for each other.
11:56 They're the only people who can keep up with one another's big attitudes, that's for sure.
12:00 "You're not afraid of me, are you?"
12:02 "Afraid of you? Why would I be afraid of you?"
12:04 "Well, most people are."
12:05 "Well, I'm not."
12:06 "Well, maybe you're not afraid of me, but I'm sure you've thought about me naked, huh?"
12:11 "Am I that transparent?"
12:14 In this parody of teen summer flicks of yesteryear,
12:19 we get a lot of over-the-top antics.
12:21 The ensemble cast consistently brings the funny
12:24 with this lampoon of a dysfunctional 1980s summer camp.
12:27 Two of the counselors are pitch-perfect tropes,
12:30 nice girl Katie and her jerkwad boyfriend Andy,
12:33 played by real-life, notoriously nice guy Paul Rudd.
12:36 "Goddammit, Katie, you're suffocating me."
12:38 "I'm choking, alright? Give me some breathing room."
12:40 Andy is too cool for school.
12:42 Katie is sweet, lovable, and clearly with the wrong guy.
12:46 They are not the ideal couple,
12:48 more a case of opposites attracting.
12:50 But summer romance is right.
12:52 Natalie is a bright young woman with a future,
13:00 dreams of university, a tennis scholarship, and a cute boyfriend.
13:04 Enter Keith, whose sole personality trait is apparently his damage.
13:09 After Natalie finally agrees to go on a non-date with the mysterious slacker,
13:13 she falls for his laid-back charm.
13:15 He's not exactly the best influence.
13:17 Natalie's marks begin to suffer,
13:19 and she's suspended from school when she tries to find out Keith's real address.
13:23 She even loses her virginity to him, only to have him dismiss her feelings.
13:38 Hey, bad boys do not always make great boyfriends.
13:41 It's in the name.
13:42 Turns out, Keith has a sad secret.
13:44 But he does manage to express how he feels before it's too late.
13:47 In one of the many college shock comedies of the early 2000s,
14:07 we meet Vance Van Wilder Jr. and Gwen Pearson.
14:11 Van is a perma-senior at Coolidge College who never wants the party to end.
14:25 Gwen is a talented up-and-coming journalist at the college paper.
14:29 When they team up to boost their popularity and marketability respectively,
14:33 sparks begin to fly.
14:34 Van seemingly has the ability to charm the pants off of anyone.
14:38 When he finally gets his act together and commits to graduating,
14:41 he proves to Gwen that he knows more than one way to have a good time.
14:44 Will is a bit rough around the edges,
14:59 but that doesn't stop him from winning the heart of Skyler, a student at Harvard.
15:02 You're an idiot.
15:04 I've been sitting over there for 45 minutes waiting for you to come and talk to me.
15:07 But I'm tired now and I have to go home.
15:09 And I couldn't sit there anymore waiting for you.
15:12 Of course, he's no slouch himself in the brains department.
15:15 The brilliant blue-collar worker catches most people he meets off-guard
15:18 with his stunning intellect and askew insights.
15:21 However, he can at times be his own worst enemy,
15:24 letting his inner turmoil hold him back.
15:27 Skyler doesn't see him as a project to fix,
15:30 but constantly motivates him to be better.
15:32 What aren't you scared of?
15:34 You live in this safe little world where no one challenges you
15:37 and you're scared shitless to do anything else because that moment you have to change.
15:40 Don't tell me about my world.
15:41 She helps him understand that he can do more with his life
15:44 and shouldn't ignore opportunity when it comes knocking.
15:47 She's as sheltered as a girl can get.
15:56 He's an outlaw with a devil-may-care attitude.
15:59 And maybe the chance she's been waiting for.
16:02 All right, listen, I didn't want to have to do this,
16:04 but you leave me no choice.
16:06 Here comes the smolder.
16:08 After Flynn breaks into Rapunzel's tower,
16:16 she convinces him that he must help her to get to the lanterns she loves so much.
16:20 While they seem totally different at first,
16:22 by the end of their adventure, there's nothing they won't do for each other,
16:26 always putting the other's safety and well-being above their own.
16:29 They're the sort of fairy tale couple that really does have a happily ever after.
16:33 Jacob is one of those guys who thinks he's all that.
16:48 He's got looks, can sweet talk,
16:50 and seems to bring home a different woman every night.
16:53 But at least one gal sees through his shtick to the womanizer he really is.
16:56 Hannah, a law school graduate, thinks she's with the man of her dreams.
17:03 But when she gets her heart stepped on,
17:05 she goes back to Jacob because, well, look at him.
17:08 But that night they realize they might have a real connection.
17:21 It's hard for others to see it at first,
17:23 but she has a good influence on him,
17:25 and it's enough to make him a one-girl kind of guy.
17:28 Anastasia "Anna" Steele is the face of wide-eyed innocence.
17:37 Billionaire bad boy Christian Grey is anything but.
17:40 Nevertheless, during an interview for Anna's college paper,
17:43 Christian finds something about her candid manner alluring.
17:45 I would like to know more about you.
17:47 There's really not much to know about me.
17:52 After she agrees to a very particular sort of relationship,
17:55 things get hot and heavy as the couple bears it all, and then some.
17:58 It's a story as much about control and fantasy as love.
18:01 While the book-to-film adaptation left many viewers wanting more,
18:05 the lovers have become an iconic example of consensual kink on screen,
18:09 for better or worse.
18:10 I need you to show me what you want to do to me.
18:15 Punish me.
18:16 Show me how bad it can be.
18:18 I want you to show me the worst.
18:20 Tramp is a carefree mutt,
18:26 living on the road and dodging the dog catcher,
18:28 while Lady is a perfectly prim purebred house pet.
18:31 She thinks she has the perfect life,
18:33 but with a new arrival at home, everything gets shaken up.
18:36 When Lady ends up out on her own,
18:38 Tramp comes to her rescue and tries to show her
18:41 what it means to live footloose and color free.
18:43 I'm afraid I don't understand.
18:45 It's simple. You see...
18:47 Hey...
18:50 Something tells me it's supper time.
18:54 The adorable poochie pair even shares one of film's most iconic dinner scenes.
18:58 Together, they each learn more about life from one another,
19:02 but in the end, it's still all puppy love.
19:05 #12 Sutter Keeley and Amy Finneke - The Spectacular Now
19:09 Amy, you're absolutely beautiful.
19:11 Oh my God, no!
19:12 Sutter Keeley is a classic party animal
19:15 whose actions are starting to catch up with him.
19:17 After a night of drinking, he wakes up on Amy Finneke's front lawn,
19:21 and things begin to change for the better.
19:23 Although he's seen her in classes, he never knew her name.
19:26 They start spending time together,
19:28 and Sutter realizes she's taking on more responsibility at home
19:31 than she ought to be because of a layabout mother.
19:33 Your mom is a grown woman.
19:35 She can take care of the paper route herself.
19:38 They begin to open up about their personal troubles,
19:40 finding solace in each other.
19:42 While Sutter is bogged down by his own personal demons,
19:45 Amy helps him to challenge them.
19:47 I love you.
19:49 #11 Tyler Gage and Nora Clark - Step Up
19:56 #1 Tyler Gage and Nora Clark - Step Up
20:00 After a little breaking and entering,
20:03 and doing serious damage to a local art school's theater,
20:06 Tyler Gage must complete 200 hours of community service at the school.
20:10 While there, he encounters Nora Clark,
20:12 a dancer who's getting ready for her senior showcase.
20:15 You look beautiful.
20:16 Thank you.
20:17 When her partner is injured, Tyler offers to step up.
20:20 She's reluctant at first, but after seeing his moves, reconsiders.
20:24 At first, they don't get along,
20:26 but as they dance, teaching one another their styles,
20:29 a bond begins to grow.
20:30 You wanna lift me? Are you kidding?
20:33 Does it look like I'm kidding?
20:35 Despite their struggles and disagreements,
20:37 they perform together,
20:38 with Tyler eventually realizing he needs to turn his life around.
20:42 #10 Tessa Young and Hardin Scott - After
20:54 I don't think we can ever be just friends.
20:57 [Music]
21:00 This is another couple pulled from the "You Can Do Better" files.
21:09 Tessa meets Hardin shortly after moving to college,
21:11 and it's games from the very start.
21:14 After rejecting his advances, he pursues her,
21:17 only to insist he doesn't date.
21:19 Dude, what?
21:20 Despite this, he still goes into jealous rages
21:23 when anyone else shows interest in her.
21:25 Yikes.
21:26 Her mother tries to warn her he's a bad influence,
21:28 and we have to say we side with mom on this.
21:31 But love is truly blind,
21:33 and it's only after it's revealed that he pursued her as a joke
21:36 that Tessa realizes she's been played.
21:38 You're just a liar.
21:40 That was all before.
21:43 Before what?
21:44 Before...
21:46 You snap your fingers and you turn it off.
21:47 Still, she'll be back for more.
21:49 #9 Troy Dyer and Lelena Pierce - Reality Bites
21:54 Troy, aren't you excited?
21:56 I'm bursting with fruit flavor.
21:58 Troy is a struggling musician
22:00 who is unable to hold down even minimum wage jobs
22:03 and is barely staying afloat.
22:05 Lelena is at the top of her classes at university,
22:08 graduating as valedictorian
22:10 and dreams of being a filmmaker.
22:12 Despite a mutual attraction,
22:14 they have trouble truly expressing those sentiments
22:16 as their lives lead them down rocky paths.
22:18 You better do it now, and you better do it fast,
22:21 because the world doesn't owe you any favors.
22:23 Even when they finally do come together,
22:25 it seems that Troy's blown it
22:27 and it isn't until faced with the death of a loved one
22:29 that he understands how short and precious life is.
22:32 Where are you going?
22:34 Just gonna look for you.
22:36 #8 Annette Hargrove and Sebastian Valmont - Cruel Intentions
22:43 Screwing the new headmaster's daughter before school starts.
22:46 She'll be my greatest victory.
22:49 Sebastian Valmont initially can be described in two words.
22:52 The worst.
22:54 He is depraved enough to even make his shrink give up on him.
22:57 He sees women as sexual conquests and nothing more.
23:00 So when he challenges himself to corrupt the literal poster girl for chastity,
23:04 he feels he's more than up to the task.
23:07 What he didn't count on was for Annette Hargrove to be so level-headed.
23:10 It's because I don't trust myself with you.
23:13 She's well onto his game
23:15 and knows all about him in his womanizing ways.
23:18 But as they get to know each other,
23:20 not just as prey and prize but as real people,
23:23 they find they're actually a perfect match.
23:26 I'm impressed.
