00:00Carole King, alive and well in Shrewsbury, how are you?
00:03Yeah, very well, thank you.
00:04And you're soon to be appearing as Carole King in...
00:08In Beautiful, the Carole King musical.
00:10Cool, where's that performing at then?
00:12At the Theatre 7 next week, from the 13th to the 15th of June.
00:15Cool, where are you from yourself? You a local lass?
00:17I'm not, I was born and raised in Watford and then moved to Shropshire about 3 or 4 years ago.
00:22How did you discover Shropshire then?
00:23So I moved to the University of Birmingham when I was a student
00:26and then I did a placement year in Telford with Capgemini
00:29and then I came back as a grab roll and I've been living in Shrewsbury for the past 2 years.
00:33So was your studies all music based then?
00:36They weren't actually, I did business, it was kind of a head over heart
00:39but I've always loved the amateur dramatics and been involved in theatre for most of my life
00:43so that's been a big hobby of mine.
00:45So what's the challenge playing Carole King then?
00:48Because I mean she's got, she's an iconic lady, you know, her voice is very distinctive.
00:53Yeah, it's really hard playing a living legend because you've got to honour
00:56you know, how iconic her voice is but also recognise I am an individual and I've got my own voice
01:00so bringing a bit of that twist, you know, a lot of her hits are top notch and everyone knows them
01:06so trying to make sure that I honour that but also bringing a bit of fresh meat as well.
01:11And for people that kind of know the big singles, if we go off piste
01:15is there a, if you were going to advise someone to kind of, you know, have a little go on the internet
01:19and find a Carole King song that's a bit lesser known
01:22which one would you pick for yourself that's quite appealing?
01:26I guess Chains is slightly less well known and I think the harmonies in that are just stunning
01:31but also Pleasant Valley Sunday which was done by the Monkees
01:34but you might not know that Carole King and Joey Goffin wrote that one as well
01:37which is a good classic.
01:39So is it all song and dance kind of show or does it follow kind of the story of her life?
01:45What's the format of the show?
01:47Yeah, so it's a really good jukebox musical and a lot of the times they kind of
01:50try and mishmash a story around the songs
01:52but this actually tells the story of Carole and her life through her songs
01:56so it's a beautiful story, it's got really gritty scenes
01:59and you learn about a lot of her life and there's a lot of struggle that she went through really
02:04so it has got that nitty gritty storyline
02:06but it's also got the fun dance singing numbers with the Shirelles pop group
02:10and also the Drifters, such iconic songs and the dancers as well
02:14which is great, I like the local emotion.
02:17Well fantastic, so watch this space, so it's at Shrewsbury?
02:21Yep, it's at the Theatre 7 from the 13th to the 15th of June
02:24you can buy your tickets online or at the box office.
02:26Thank you very much Carole King, can I get your autograph?
02:29Right, any time.
02:302, 3, 4
02:31Chains, my baby's got me locked up in chains
02:37and they ain't the kind that you can't see
02:44Oh, these chains of love got a hold on me, yeah
02:53Chains, well I can't break away from these chains
02:58I can't run around, cause I'm not free
