00:55 Today we mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day,
01:03 an incredible achievement in military planning and logistics
01:10 uniting brave service personnel from air, sea and land forces
01:17 at the beginning of Operation Overlord.
01:23 Paratroopers and glider troops had already secured the bridges
01:30 and exit roads and Nazi artillery batteries in advance of the Normandy beach landing.
01:39 By the day's end some 156,000 Allied troops
01:48 had successfully stormed the now famous Gold, Juno, Sword and Utah beaches
01:58 to achieve a foothold in France.
02:02 In the weeks that followed the Allies fought bitterly against a determined foe
02:11 from the unforgiven countryside of Normandy to the liberation of Paris two months later.
02:21 We remember the sacrifice and courage of all Allied forces on Operation Overlord.
