00:00Mr. President, this week marks the 80th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy.
00:17Operation Overlord, on June 6, 1944, was one of the most significant events in human history.
00:28In those early morning hours, more than 24,000 soldiers and 1,200 aircraft conducted a massive
00:36and daring airborne assault behind enemy lines.
00:41This was done to isolate the coast and prevent the enemy from reinforcing its defenses.
00:49Then, at dawn, the largest amphibious assault ever conducted.
00:55160,000 U.S., British, and Canadian troops poured out of 6,900 ships and vessels to storm the beaches
01:05against a crushing enemy fire.
01:10Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juneau, Sward, the beaches' names are still famous today.
01:20The first days were not promising for the Allies, but slowly, over the next several weeks,
01:28the Allies extended their tenacious foothold and amassed more and more forces,
01:33viciously numbering two million on these beaches of Normandy.
01:40After a German counterattack in early August failed, the breakout would begin.
01:47Paris would be liberated just weeks later, on August the 25th.
01:53And then five days later, the enemy would withdraw back against the Seine into Germany,
02:01the end of Operation Overlord.
02:06Losses were severe. June the 6th, D-Day, alone, the Allies suffered more than 10,000 casualties.
02:16At Operation's end, that number would swell to nearly a quarter of a million,
02:21including more than 153,000 wounded and 72,000 killed or missing.
02:30More than was killed in the entire war in Vietnam.
02:37Most of D-Day's participants were young men in their teens and early 20s,
02:44men with little or no combat experience, and their whole lives in front of them,
02:51landed on those beaches.
02:54Men like my father, Charles Tuberville, a farmer from Arkansas who was not yet 19.
03:00He was 18 years old when he landed at Utah Beach on that very day of June 6th.
03:08I can't imagine what it must have been like to carry such an incredible burden at such a young age.
03:18To leave your family and loved ones knowing you might not make it home.
03:25My dad would tell you it's because it was their duty.
03:29They loved their country, and their country needed them.
03:35They also understood that America and the freedoms we enjoy were worth fighting for.
03:43I think of those men today, and I can't help but worry for my sons and this country's future.
03:52In the months leading up to this important 80th anniversary,
03:56we have been inundated with images from college campuses across our nation.
04:01We have seen young people of similar age to the D-Day heroes protesting in support of terrorists,
04:11openly calling for the destruction of the society and freedoms
04:16that my dad and all these men paid for on D-Day with their blood.
04:23So how did we get here?
04:25How did we go from producing the type of men and women
04:29who are willing to die on the beaches for freedom and our Constitution?
04:34How did we get here?
04:36To college students who are openly supporting groups that chant,
04:41Death to America.
04:44Sadly, our education system has failed the younger generation.
04:50Many of our major universities are more concerned with woke ideology than with quality education.
04:59They have no interest in teaching students the truth about our country
05:04and our founding principles.
05:07Many of our students are being taught to hate this country, to hate America,
05:14and the results speak for themselves.
05:18More and more, high school students today can tell you everything you want to know
05:23about the made-up gender spectrum.
05:26They can carry on a conversation about that.
05:29But you know what?
05:30They struggle to read at grade level and do basic math.
05:35Our progressive education system, controlled by teachers' unions,
05:39has made us ranked 26th in the world in math,
05:45and 26th in the world in math, and 6th in reading.
05:50It's embarrassing.
05:52It's unforgivable.
05:54The teachers' unions try to silence parents and cover for incompetence
05:59while our children are suffering.
06:02Merit is now problematic.
06:06As our nation has been taken over by the Marxist, Diversist, Equity, and Inclusion,
06:12or as it's better known, called DEI ideology,
06:17this woke teaching sows division by teaching our kids to resent each other.
06:25Think about that for a minute.
06:27Our young people are the greatest resource that we have, but we are failing them.
06:35I worked in the education system for 35 years, and I'm embarrassed.
06:40I'm appalled.
06:43All to appease a radical ideology that has taken over this country.
06:50As a result, the Army has had to lower its standards
06:57because many enlistees can't meet the minimum requirements.
07:03You heard that right.
07:04We've had to lower standards, our standards both mentally and physical.
07:11We could learn a lesson or two from those heroes like my dad
07:14who bravely served and stormed the beaches 80 years ago Thursday.
07:21Those men and women were united in the belief
07:25that America was a country worth fighting for.
07:31So please join me, especially this Thursday,
07:36in honoring the brave heroes who risked
07:40and in many cases gave their lives for freedom in what we have here today.
07:46May we never forget their sacrifices
07:49and honor them by making sure our children know the truth about our great country
07:55and what happened on the beaches of Normandy that day, June 6, 1944.
08:04Mr. President, I yield the floor.
08:07I notice the absence of a quorum.
08:09We'll call the roll.
