Temperatures soaring to triple digits in the Southwest

Record-breaking heat is gripping the Southwest this week.

00:00It will get hotter over the next few days as the ridge builds. We're going to see fewer clouds out

00:03there. And you can see that there are areas with excessive heat warnings. In fact, if I isolate

00:08them on the map here, many areas in the southwest are under them. And then we also have heat

00:12advisories one step down, including parts of the Bay Area there. And then an excessive heat watch

00:17looking further down the line into parts of interior central and southern California too.

00:22But a good news update here on the recent wildfire that we've been tracking, the Corral Fire.

00:27This has not grown at all. There's been almost no fire activity over the past 24 or 36 hours,

00:32which is good news. So we're pinned at 14,000 acres. One of the interstates here was a nice

00:37boundary that it did not cross a fire stop. And now 90% of that perimeter is contained. So there's

00:43good confidence behind what the crews are doing there. And there's also good confidence in what's

00:48going on in the reservoirs, a big surplus. So it's going to be hot. It's going to be dry here.

00:52The dry season is certainly here, but we have a nice benefit from the two most recent snow

00:57seasons. We were a little above average this past one, way above average two winters ago.

01:02We're still reaping the benefits from that. So we're at 100 degrees sitting at the century mark

01:07in Phoenix right now. Head up into Portland, some rain showers there, 61. That's nice for us in the

01:12short term, but the heat is on and we have a significant warming trend through Thursday and

01:17Friday. Temperatures are going to be up there. So Wednesday, looking at record challenging highs

01:21in Las Vegas, we're looking at 110 degrees. In fact, that's going to be probably a record breaker.

01:26The record high for June 5th is 109 from eight years ago. We're also going to probably tie the

01:31record high in Lancaster, California, and also tie the record high in Flagstaff. So we have some heat

01:36and it doesn't end on Wednesday. In fact, Thursday, we break out the maroon colored pencils. It's

01:40going to be even hotter out there and we're going to have more record heat. In fact, we gain a few

01:45more degrees in some spots like Phoenix and Vegas. And we'll also be probably into record territory

01:50in Elko, Nevada.
