00:00 "That's why we're talking about the movie, but we also would like to talk a little bit about you,
00:03 and I don't know how comfortable you are, you know, talking about yourself at the moment."
00:08 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most embarrassing times
00:13 that celebrities have walked out of an interview, or it was suddenly ended by them or someone on
00:18 their behalf. The cringe can come from either the celebrity's behavior or the interviewer's
00:23 inappropriate questions. "Hold it, hold it, listen to me because you'll learn."
00:28 #30 Kanye West
00:32 Ye is a contentious figure and has given many infamous interviews throughout the years.
00:37 Just ask Sway, who definitely doesn't have the answers.
00:40 "You ain't got the answers, man. You ain't got the answers. You ain't got the answers. You ain't
00:46 got the answers, Sway." One of the OG freakouts occurred all the way back in 2005 when Ye
00:52 appeared on the Toronto radio station Flow 93.5. Ye was already on edge, as the station had
00:59 previously edited the lyrics to his famous song "Gold Digger." Ye confronted the host about the
01:04 censorship, and things got a little heated live on air. Unfortunately, the DJ cut off Ye one too
01:10 many times during the discussion, prompting the rapper to slam his hands on the desk,
01:15 yell at the host, and storm off the show. "Yo, stop it, man. I'm talking, man. Talking, man.
01:22 Keep on cutting me off, man. Are you serious?" #29 Montel Williams
01:27 "It has zero to do with this and has zero to do with the school, so I'd rather not address that
01:32 during this interview. But if you want me at another time, we can schedule it. I'll be back
01:36 up here to do it. Or we can get me via satellite." Famous talk show host Montel Williams sat down
01:41 for an interview with WPTZ's Jack Thurston, but it didn't last too long. Williams is a known
01:47 advocate of medical marijuana, having used the plant to aid with his multiple sclerosis.
01:53 When Thurston brought it up, Williams immediately shut him down, claiming that his marijuana use
01:58 had nothing to do with his reason for being there, but that he'd be happy to discuss it at
02:02 another time. When Thurston pushed, Williams simply stood up, claimed that the interview
02:07 was over, and told the camera operator to cut their device. "We end the interview. Done. Thanks."
02:13 #28 S Club 7 "There are rumors, I don't know how true they are,
02:17 that you guys are grumpy because you haven't made a mint." Formed in the late 90s, S Club 7 was
02:24 another British group looking to capitalize on the Spice Girls craze. They had great success,
02:29 but broke up under curious circumstances in 2003. As a final goodbye, the group stopped at the BBC
02:35 for an interview on Liquid News. Host Claudia Winkleman brought up the group's finances,
02:41 referencing a rumor that they were unhappy with their pay. Before they got into the weeds,
02:46 a publicist stormed into the room and put a very awkward stop to the interview.
02:51 Guess that answers that. Turns out, there was some truth to the rumor. Band member Hannah
02:56 Spirit later admitted that the band members were severely underpaid, despite selling millions of
03:01 albums. #27 Jamie Foxx "The one and only, Jamie Foxx, representing Team Clippers." Famous actor
03:17 Jamie Foxx was in attendance at the 2018 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, playing for Team Clippers.
03:24 SportsCenter host Michael Smith was lucky enough to score a ringside interview with the Oscar
03:29 winner, but he squandered the opportunity with celebrity gossip. It has long been rumored that
03:34 Foxx once dated Katie Holmes, and Smith referenced a series of photos that showed Foxx and Holmes
03:40 playing basketball on Valentine's Day. Foxx didn't even address the rumors, nor the photos.
03:46 He simply stood up, removed the headphones, and walked away. "Did you and Katie Holmes play
03:50 basketball for Valentine's Day? Like some real loving basketball game?" "Uh oh." Now, that's
03:58 how you leave an interview like a boss. The look that the sound guy gives the camera is just icing
04:04 on the cake. #26 Selena Gomez "There's something about him that we don't get or we don't understand
04:10 him." Justin Bieber was controversial in 2013, often encountering run-ins with the law and
04:16 engaging in problematic behavior. And at the same time, he was in an on-again, off-again relationship
04:22 with Selena Gomez. Gomez appeared on Chicago's WGN-TV and gave an interview with Dean Richards,
04:28 who asked the pop star about Bieber's behavior and if there was, quote, "something about him that we
04:34 don't get." It's quite an inappropriate question, and Gomez politely but noticeably made her
04:39 displeasure known. She simply stayed quiet and gave some disbelieving looks off-camera before
04:45 the screen cut to black. It's likely that her publicist ordered the cut, resulting in a brilliant
04:50 bit of awkward comedy. "What don't we get about him, or what is it that he's not getting out there?"
04:56 #25 Cameron Diaz "We are friends, we are fellow angels. Please welcome my partners in crime and
05:08 life, Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz." This wasn't a walkout per se, but a hung-up instead. Cameron
05:15 Diaz and Jason Segel were discussing their new movie on the Australian morning radio program,
05:20 The Kyle and Jackie O Show, when Kyle Sandelands made some inappropriate comments about Drew Barry
05:26 Moore and her controversial past. This immediately rubbed Diaz the wrong way, as she is very close to
05:32 Barry Moore. Her vocal demeanor instantly changed following the comment, and she became openly
05:37 combative with Sandelands. Sensing the obvious tension, Jackie O attempted to change the subject,
05:43 but it was too late. After a brief detour, Diaz abruptly ended the call, claiming, quote,
05:49 "they're wrapping us up" before hanging up on the duo. "Do you know how hard it is to find a
05:53 quality man in Los Angeles?" #24 Rihanna "Well, people are interested in you, you're a big star."
06:02 "They are, and they're interested in a lot of things, a lot of things that don't matter or
06:06 shouldn't." That's where our interview abruptly ends. We return to Australia for this interview
06:11 between Rihanna and Natalie Barr, host of The Breakfast Show, Sunrise. The pop star was there
06:16 to promote her new movie, Battleship, in which she plays a Navy gunner's mate named Cora Rakes.
06:22 The interview began well enough, but before long, Barr brought up Rihanna's romantic life. She asked
06:28 if it's awkward being linked to other celebrities, and Rihanna gave a fierce comeback befitting the
06:33 question. She insinuated that her personal life, quote, "shouldn't matter" before the interview
06:38 suddenly ended, with the implication that Rihanna had walked out. Barr later said that celebrities
06:44 and publicists don't like when, quote, "you venture into personal territory." "If you ask nice
06:49 questions about the movie, that's fine, but if you venture into sort of personal territory, they,
06:53 they don't like it at all." We suppose she just couldn't help herself. Number 23, Birdman.
07:00 "Audrey, y'all. Stop playing with my name. I ain't gonna say it no more."
07:04 We don't know what the record for shortest interview of all time is, but this has to be
07:08 up there. Back in April of 2016, American rapper Birdman appeared on the popular radio show,
07:14 The Breakfast Club, and his displeasure was immediate. The second Birdman entered the studio,
07:20 he attacked the hosts and told them to stop playing with his name. And when they went on the
07:24 air, Birdman got into a vicious fight with Charlamagne Tha God, told him to, quote,
07:29 "put some respect on his name," dropped a few racial slurs, and left, all within the span of
07:35 just one minute. You can't script this kind of stuff. "Y'all, y'all, y'all finished or y'all
07:39 done. I ain't got no more talking. Let's rock." Number 22, Nicolas Sarkozy.
07:46 "Since we've been here, it seems that every day we're hearing another story about your wife.
07:52 What's going on?" As we're learning throughout this list, many famous people do not like talking
07:57 about their personal lives. That includes Nicolas Sarkozy, who served as the president of France
08:02 between 2007 and 2012. The same year he took office, Sarkozy divorced his wife of 11 years,
08:09 Cecilia Segeny-Albéniz. This divorce came after months of rumor and speculation that the couple
08:16 was not getting along, and Sarkozy was asked about the nature of the relationship during an
08:21 interview with 60 Minutes. Sarkozy remained tight-lipped, but host Leslie Stahl persisted.
08:27 After another line of personal questioning, Sarkozy raised his eyebrows to his hairline,
08:32 took out his earpiece, and left with a genial handshake. "Sarkozy decided the interview was over.
08:38 And off he went." The divorce was officially announced just two weeks later.
08:46 Number 21, Russell Crowe. "The location of him, the accent you've given him, there are hints to
08:52 me of Irish, but what have you, what were you thinking of in those terms?" "You've got dead
08:56 ears, mate. You seriously got dead ears if you think that's an Irish accent." Whatever you do,
09:00 never tell Russell Crowe that he sounded Irish in Robin Hood. That's what BBC radio presenter
09:05 Mark Lawson did, and it resulted in a slew of problems. Crowe was on Radio 4's front row to
09:11 discuss Robin Hood when Lawson claimed that his accent in the movie sounded Irish. Crowe took
09:17 immediate offense, and told Lawson that he had "dead ears" for believing that. And then, despite
09:24 answering a question, Crowe immediately returned to the Irish comment and claimed that the assertion
09:29 is "ridiculous." He then made one further sarcastic remark before leaving, muttering under his breath
09:35 that he "doesn't get the Irish thing." Yeah, we can tell. "Thank you. I don't get the Irish thing,
09:41 though. I get 'em both." Number 20, Gary Coleman. Former child actor Gary Coleman found himself a
09:49 target of the tabloids in January of 2010, when he was arrested on an outstanding warrant related
09:54 to domestic assault. He subsequently appeared on The Insider in an attempt to clear his name,
10:00 but was pelted with accusations by the hosts. In the course, he grows particularly hostile
10:14 towards guest host Lisa Bloom, who seemingly refuses to listen despite his constant denials.
10:21 They proceed to get into a fierce screaming match, before Coleman storms out in a flurry of curses.
10:27 The other hosts can do nothing but sit and gawk at the sheer pandemonium that is taking place
10:41 beside them. Number 19, Julian Assange. Getting an opportunity to speak to the man who probably
10:48 knows more than most isn't an opportunity to be squandered, but sadly, that's what CNN ended up
10:54 doing. During a 2010 interview, the journalist repeatedly asked Assange questions about his
11:14 personal life, prompting him to threaten to walk if the questions didn't stop. The interview was
11:29 intended to focus on the importance of WikiLeaks, but quickly turned to inquiries regarding Assange's
11:35 past lawsuits. After repeated warnings that he would leave if the topic of conversation continued,
11:41 Assange stayed true to his word and walked out. Number 18, R. Kelly. Now this is an interview
11:54 for the ages. While appearing on HuffPost Live, R. Kelly is told by the interviewer that his
12:00 controversial personal life has been affecting his album sales and the way people interact with
12:05 his lyrics. This does not please Kelly, and he tells the interviewer that she only has one more
12:25 question. This results in an absolutely hilarious and surreal moment where the two talk over each
12:31 other for a solid minute, with neither being interested in what the other has to say. Of
12:48 course, the interviewer has a point, because R. Kelly's reputation has plummeted in recent years.
12:54 Number 17, Sarah, Duchess of York. Nobody likes being confronted with video evidence of them
13:01 committing a crime, especially royalty. In an interview with the Australian version of 60
13:06 Minutes, the Duchess didn't seem to want to be there whatsoever. Snappy replies, eye-rolling,
13:12 and the demand that the camera crew delete certain segments of the recording made for an interview
13:17 that was wild from start to finish. The final straw came when she was shown footage of her
13:22 accepting a bribe for offering insider access to members of the royal family. With one more huff,
13:28 the Duchess was out. Number 16, Bill O'Reilly. This conservative commentator has caused more
13:36 than his share of outraged reactions. This is another one where we don't physically see the
13:41 subject, but the host herself has called it a walkout, so we've got grounds to include it.
13:47 In this public radio interview with NPR, it was O'Reilly's turn to leave outraged. O'Reilly was
13:54 on fresh air to promote his book, Who's Looking Out For You?, and wasn't ready for one specific
13:59 line of questioning from host Terry Gross. Gross asked O'Reilly about recent accusations that were
14:05 made against him, accusations that claimed he was abusive and unkind. O'Reilly instantly turned
14:12 combative and eventually ended the interview, claiming that it was, quote, "a hatchet job" on
14:18 him. Years later, O'Reilly was fired from Fox News over instances of sexual misconduct.
14:25 He said, "If you think that's fair, Terry, you should get out of this business."
14:29 And I'm thinking, one of us still has a program.
14:34 Number 15, Paris Hilton. Sometimes celebrities just don't want to give up the spotlight.
14:42 In the case of Paris Hilton, even the suggestion that her fame had run its course hit a sore spot
14:47 for the notorious diva. As this ABC News interview went on, and she was questioned if she felt
14:52 threatened by the Kardashian's newfound fame, Hilton became more and more Hilton.
14:58 "Do you ever worry about, do you ever worry about your moment having passed?"
15:03 Sarcastic laughter and clipped short replies hinted that the TV personality had just about
15:09 had it with her time in the interview chair. When the reporter asked, "Do you want to wrap up?"
15:13 Paris spared him an answer and simply got up and left.
15:16 "You want to wrap up?"
15:17 "But I, I was curious about one thing, though."
15:20 Number 14, LeBron James. A bit of context for this one. In Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals,
15:28 Cleveland Cavalier J.R. Smith made a monumental mistake, resulting in the eventual loss of the
15:34 game. "Watch James, now wanted a timeout, but too late to get it. And five minutes go up on the
15:42 clock overtime here in Game 1." Teammate LeBron James was visibly peeved at Smith, and journalists
15:48 couldn't help but bring it up in the post-game conference. An ESPN reporter asked James what
15:53 Smith was thinking when he made the error, resulting in a bitter back and forth. When
15:58 pressed further, despite answering the question numerous times, James simply stood up, gathered
16:04 his belongings, and left the stage amidst a painfully awkward silence. "Did you know if he
16:09 knew the score?" "Thank you." We're gonna go ahead and say no, he didn't know what Smith was thinking.
16:19 Just a hunch. Number 13, Bee Gees.
16:22 Before you bring a world-famous band onto your show, it's probably best to brush up on at least
16:32 a few of their songs. When Stayin' Alive Superstars appeared on Clive Anderson's talk show in 1996,
16:38 things were tense from the beginning. Singer Barry Gibb seemed to become especially annoyed
16:42 with Anderson after the host mentioned he'd forgotten one of their hits from the past,
16:46 and the pop star laughed before simply excusing himself and walking off stage.
16:50 "We're getting on like a storm, aren't we, folks? In fact, I might just leave."
16:54 With a painfully awkward half-apology, the rest of the band slowly followed,
17:01 leaving the stunned host all alone. Was it something he said?
17:05 "Oh, well, I guess I better join in." Number 12, Jesse Ventura.
17:10 In 2009, vet, wrestling icon, actor, and politician Jesse Ventura appeared on Opie & Anthony,
17:19 only to spar with comedian Jim Norton over the topic of the American government and military.
17:24 Norton continuously yells into the microphone while Ventura calmly tries to explain his
17:29 situation and point of view. It eventually gets so bad that Jesse simply just sits back
17:46 and stares at Norton, clearly frustrated with his stubbornness. Ventura leaves 20 minutes later,
17:52 but even in the midst of physically walking out of the studio, he and Norton can't help but dig
17:57 into each other. It's wonderfully awkward, and it's a miracle that it didn't come to blows.
18:13 Let's just say, Jim wouldn't have lasted long. Number 11, Donald Trump.
18:19 Ever since his election, there's been friction between Donald Trump and the press. To put it
18:23 mildly, and this botched interview with CBS was no exception. Though it began smoothly,
18:28 things went south fast when the infamous validity behind the Obama wiretapping accusations were
18:34 brought up. Apparently, this was a touchy subject for President Trump, as only moments after the
18:43 questioning began, he waved the reporter away and announced that the interview was over.
18:52 To be quite honest, nobody was all that surprised.
18:54 Number 10, Jordan Belfort.
19:04 Legally speaking, Jordan Belfort is a convicted scammer and fraudster who spent two years in
19:18 prison. You may know this because Leonardo DiCaprio played him in The Wolf of Wall Street.
19:23 After its release, Belfort sat down with 60 Minutes reporter Liz Hayes. Throughout,
19:28 Belfort grows hostile when Hayes discusses his victims and their restitution. But things get
19:34 really wild once she asks if he's hiding money in Australia, leading him to scoff and prod Hayes
19:39 to move on. But an off-screen voice cuts the interview short.
19:43 You have an oral contract with your management, the Fordham Company.
19:47 Is that an attempt to hide your income?
19:49 Okay, next question.
19:51 I think the peanut gallery is going to start chiming in really quickly.
19:54 I think you can air what you want here after this interview is done.
19:58 Why can't I?
20:00 Oh my God, you got a lot of nerve, boy, I'll tell you.
20:03 Belfort proceeds to chastise Hayes from the sidelines, calling her disrespectful and telling
20:08 her that she has a lot of nerve to ask the questions she was asking.
20:12 Number nine, Robert Pattinson.
20:14 Ryan Seacrest is no stranger to awkward moments.
20:17 Well, I'm giving you a high five.
20:19 But this red carpet weird-a-thon with the Twilight star still makes us cringe.
20:23 Chatting it up like old friends, the interview was going well until the radio host decided to
20:28 make a poke at a taboo topic, Robert's relationship with co-star Kristen Stewart.
20:32 What do you say to your fans who are desperate to know about you and your co-star Kristen?
20:38 What could you tell them?
20:40 After an awkward pause, Pattinson's PR manager decided that enough was enough and
20:44 spirited the teen heartthrob away, with Seacrest sitting shunned.
20:48 Too bad it didn't keep the Robson drama from blowing up all over the tabloids.
20:55 Number eight, Shannon Tweed.
20:57 She's mad because you made a joke about it.
20:59 I was trying to lighten the mood and...
21:02 She was not having it.
21:03 Yeah.
21:04 In June of 2011, Shannon Tweed and husband figure Gene Simmons appeared on Joy Behar
21:10 Say Anything to promote the new season of Gene Simmons Family Jewels.
21:15 The interview was a little awkward to begin with, as Tweed kept repeating that she was
21:20 sick of her relationship with Simmons and his philandering ways.
21:23 And what about the life?
21:24 You've been with him for 27 years.
21:25 Is it new?
21:26 I'm tired.
21:26 I'm tired.
21:27 28.
21:27 I'm tired of it.
21:28 You're tired of the life?
21:29 Well, the kids went to college and I'm tired of his life.
21:32 Shannon rips off her microphone and walks out, as Gene calmly asks her to return.
21:37 Luckily, not too much damage was done, as Simmons and Tweed married just four months
21:43 later and are still together as of 2024.
21:46 At least the story has a happy ending.
21:48 Number seven, Naomi Campbell.
21:53 Diamonds, drama, cameras being punched, this sounds like an episode of Real Housewives.
21:58 Backstage during Campbell's charity fashion show for Haiti, ABC reporters decided to question
22:03 the supermodel about how she allegedly received a large "blood diamond" from ex-Liberian
22:08 President Charles Taylor.
22:10 Apparently, she wasn't in the mood to discuss her jewelry, as she quickly cut the reporter
22:14 off and said that she would not be discussing any diamond during the interview.
22:17 Shortly afterwards, she stormed away, knocking a camera out of a producer's hands as she
22:25 made a hasty exit.
22:27 Thank you so much, goodbye.
22:28 Number six, Kid Cudi.
22:38 Nardwuar is an oddly beloved, cult Canadian interviewer who uses an idiosyncratic personality
22:45 and some truly impressive research to throw off his guests.
22:49 His unorthodox approach typically results in bewilderment and maybe even some acknowledgement,
22:54 but it often gets him into trouble.
22:56 Yo, he know too much.
22:57 I can't do this.
22:59 Things were going quite well with Kid Cudi until Nardwuar showed Cudi some albums that
23:05 his deceased uncle played on.
23:07 Cudi is polite enough, but he quickly leaves without any fanfare or formal goodbye.
23:12 He just up and walks out the door while Nardwuar chases him down the short hallway.
23:16 Number five, Christine O'Donnell.
23:23 I think I'm being rather charming and respectful.
23:25 I'm just asking you questions based on your own public statements.
23:29 When it comes to this notoriously sassy British TV personality, he has no issue putting his
23:34 guest in the spotlight, whether it's Kelsey Grammer or once Republican Senate candidate
23:39 Christine O'Donnell.
23:40 Known for being just a tad eccentric, O'Donnell didn't disappoint with her reaction to Morgan's
23:45 questions regarding her views on gay marriage.
23:47 Do you talk about gay marriage in the book?
23:50 What relevance is that right now?
23:51 At first dodging the question and then becoming angry at Morgan for his rudeness, the Senate
23:56 hopeful announced that she'd given up another interview for this slot and that she was being
24:00 pulled away.
24:01 Leaving us all in awkward silence.
24:08 Number four, Justin Bieber.
24:15 This entire interview was like something you'd see in Lost in Translation.
24:20 Bieber appeared on a Spanish radio show in 2015 and immediately took umbrage with the
24:25 format.
24:26 As the interview was conducted in Spanish, a translator was required to both translate
24:31 the host's questions and the Biebs' answers.
24:33 You can practically see Bieber's eyes glazing over throughout the interview due to the glacial
24:46 pace and terrible questions, which many people attribute to poor translating.
24:51 After eight minutes of torture and some unnecessary personal digs, the hosts ask Justin to break
24:57 the internet with some popular YouTubers, forcing Bieber to nonchalantly walk out amidst
25:02 the hosts' obvious excitement.
25:04 Talk about being a buzzkill.
25:14 You know, he was great with us.
25:16 Thank you very much.
25:17 Thank you very much, Brad.
25:18 Number three, Robert Downey Jr.
25:24 What are we doing?
25:25 Well, I'm just asking questions, that's all.
25:28 Right.
25:29 The British journalist Krishnanguru Murthy has made awkward interviews his specialty.
25:34 When Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. sat down with him in 2015 to promote the latest Avengers
25:39 movie, we're guessing RDJ wasn't expecting to be asked about his political opinions,
25:44 his relationship with his dad, or his past experiences with drugs and alcohol.
25:48 You've talked in other interviews again about your relationship with your father and
25:55 the role of all of that in, you know, the dark periods you went into.
26:00 After testily answering a few of the interviewer's questions, Downey tried to steer the topic
26:05 back to the movie before deciding that it was getting a little Diane Sawyer.
26:10 You see what, okay, it's just getting a little Diane Sawyer in there.
26:13 No, no, look, I don't want to do that.
26:15 Number two, Joan Rivers.
26:18 You know, this whole interview is becoming a defensive interview.
26:21 No!
26:22 Are you wearing leather shoes?
26:24 Yeah, no, I'm talking...
26:26 The late Joan Rivers was not to be messed with.
26:29 CNN proved that the hard way.
26:31 The interviewer, Frederica Whitfield, is clearly doing that whole "I'll attack you,
26:36 but I'll pretend to be polite and act innocent" thing throughout the whole interview.
26:41 She takes numerous potshots at Rivers while continuing to feign friendliness,
26:45 which includes laughing at Joan's comments, but before long, she has had enough.
26:50 You're just saying, "No, I'm going.
26:53 I really am going because all you have done is negative."
26:56 Once Whitfield comments on Rivers' fur coat, she flies off the handle before calling the
27:01 interview negative and storming off.
27:03 Whitfield also states that Rivers kept her microphone on after the cameras had cut
27:08 and let fly some rather, um, colorful language.
27:11 Something tells us Joan did not take kindly to the passive aggressiveness.
27:16 Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get
27:21 notified about our latest videos.
27:23 You have the option to be notified for occasional videos or all of them.
27:27 If you're on your phone, make sure you go into your settings and switch on notifications.
27:31 Number one, Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar.
27:36 You know it's bad when the hosts decide that they've had enough.
27:38 Pit legendary Whoopi Goldberg against then Fox News host Bill O'Reilly and the gloves
27:43 are bound to come off.
27:45 A heated debate regarding the construction of mosques after 9/11 sparked an argument
27:49 between the hosts that escalated quickly.
27:51 After O'Reilly's remark about Muslims, both Behar and Goldberg decided they'd had
27:58 enough and walked off.
