00:00 [Crowd noise]
00:04 Okay lads, when I say stop, you stop boxing. When I say break, take a step back.
00:08 Keep your hands up, protect yourself all the time. Good luck to you both. Good luck.
00:12 So three months after a display that impressed Ritchie and Carl Frampton was described in some quarters as dazzling.
00:20 The very talented Royston Barney-Smith is ready for his first eight rounder tonight against the Costa Rican Jose Manuel Perez.
00:29 He's such an exciting prospect, Ritchie.
00:31 Yeah, he goes about his work very well, doesn't he? Lovely skills, lovely jab.
00:36 And I like his judgement of distance. He's straight away catching his opponent there. Good backhand.
00:41 Yeah, he's a lovely boxer, Royston Barney-Smith.
00:44 Not just a demolition job, they were his words at the weigh-in.
00:48 And he's certainly not hanging about here early in the contest.
00:51 The first 25 seconds or so, Royston Barney-Smith already landing telling shots.
00:57 He's won all eight fights to this point, four inside the distance, including the last one against Michael Velasco here in December.
01:04 A performance that night was just about punch perfect.
01:07 And if he comes through this tonight, he's going to fight for the WBC youth title next up.
01:13 And he looks razor sharp, Ritchie, in the early stages here.
01:15 Yeah, good. And that's what impresses me more than anything.
01:18 If you watch the way he boxes, he takes a little backward step.
01:20 So he's always assessing the distance between himself and his opponent.
01:24 You watch as he boxes, as his opponent comes forward, he adjusts his feet, creates a gap and then punches through that gap.
01:30 So lovely boxing, lovely balance.
01:33 Oh, didn't you see there he was again.
01:34 Look, the way he just works, maintains that gap between himself and his opponent.
01:38 Very good. Very well schooled indeed.
01:40 Left hand has been a factor to this point.
01:42 That long right southpaw lead, which sets up the left hand.
01:46 Perez has been beaten 11 times.
01:48 He's 15 years older than Barney-Smith.
01:50 He's lost seven of his last nine fights.
01:54 And he turned professional, Ritchie, in 2014 when Royston Barney-Smith was still at junior school.
01:58 That's the gap tonight between them in terms of age and potential experience.
02:04 The 35-year-old here tonight from Costa Rica.
02:07 But he's a tough cookie. He's only been stopped once, Fletch.
02:10 So he knows the game, this fella does.
02:12 Staying on the outside, trying to keep that guard nice and high, trying to avoid the shots from Barney-Smith.
02:18 Up there, good guard there from Barney-Smith.
02:21 And then he comes back again, that lovely straight left hand.
02:23 And just maintains that gap again with that little backward step.
02:27 Just got bumped at the knees.
02:29 Perez.
02:31 And that one landed from Barney-Smith.
02:33 He's now backed into his own corner.
02:35 Final minute of the first round.
02:37 These are sharp shots coming in from the 20-year-old from Southampton.
02:41 This one's scheduled for eighth at Super Featherweight.
02:44 Barney-Smith wants to try and get the job done as quick as he can in there.
02:48 Oh, lovely. Doesn't rush his work either, Fletch.
02:52 You know, he's very well skilled, works well behind his jab.
02:56 And he's got the accuracy with that left hand.
02:59 But, you know, he's a patient puncher, isn't he?
03:03 Barney-Smith, and there again, that little back step.
03:06 Yeah, he's clever.
03:09 [BELL RINGS]
03:11 It's the first round where Jose Mandov-Perez has been on the defensive.
03:20 He's been on the back foot.
03:21 Royston Barney-Smith has been nice and sharp in there over this opening three minutes here.
03:27 The fourth fight of the night here at York Hall.
03:29 And that was a good opening round for Royston Barney-Smith.
03:37 It started with a name which led me to a young girl made to work.
03:41 This unfairness must have ignited something, as years later she boycotted the 1911 census.
03:46 The suffragettes gained the vote for women, and I discovered she was one of them.
03:50 My great-great-aunt, Eliza Dobson.

04:04 Get out there.
04:07 Backhand.
04:08 A couple of times there, Lillian Byrne did take it.
04:10 Little jab. Jab, throw it on the front foot.
04:13 Welcome back to York Hall.
04:14 Ben Davison in the Royston Barney-Smith corner as we take a look at some of his impressive work in the first round, Richie.
04:20 Super shot there with the left hand.
04:22 Perez tried to come back there with the shot, but there's a little chopping left hand there.
04:26 That was a belter.
04:27 Tell you what, what a good time to be Ben Davison.
04:29 Some of the fighters he's working with right now.
04:31 He's got some quality boys in the gym.
04:33 Yeah, I'll give him that.
04:34 Really good.
04:35 So the second scheduled for eight.
04:37 First eight rounder tonight for Royston Barney-Smith.
04:39 Super featherweight.
04:40 He's four inches taller.
04:41 He's got the height and reach advantage.
04:43 When you punch as straight as he does,
04:47 it's quite a significant advantage he has in there as well.
04:50 Those long straight punches, the right lead setting up the left hand.
04:54 Very significant and impressive in the first round.
04:56 Perez has got real problems here because obviously he's conceding the height and reach.
05:00 When you have a southpaw orthodox situation,
05:03 gets caught again with that left hand flex.
05:05 Let's see if he can get through this.
05:07 Just seemed to be a little wobble, Richie, didn't they?
05:09 Right above us when that landed.
05:11 The knees just seemed to buckle.
05:12 There's another one.
05:13 The long left that he can't miss with really, Barney-Smith, when he lets it go.
05:17 It's so accurate and so sharp.
05:19 It's there in a flash and there's nothing that Perez seemingly can do about it.
05:23 No, he's only got a left hook there.
05:25 That was just a shot on the inside with Perez.
05:28 Rare bit of success.
05:30 But he can only land the shot really if there's a mistake made by Barney-Smith.
05:36 With an inaccurate shot, he misses the target.
05:39 And everything he's thrown, he's hitting the target.
05:42 So he has real problems.
05:43 Look at that.
05:44 That's lovely.
05:45 One, two, and then that right hook as he's leaning back.
05:47 That's a great quality work that was.
05:50 Barney-Smith in control again in the second round.
05:54 And there's a real problem in there for Perez.
05:57 He's got the age.
05:58 He's got the experience.
06:00 But there's not a great deal he can do to stop this talented young man, Sugar Boy Roy.
06:05 And the punch is coming back in Barney-Smith's direction, few and far between.
06:11 This is the shorter man, you see.
06:14 As I said, it's an awful lot of soundball situation.
06:17 It's the rear-handed, both boxers have to travel a little bit further to the target.
06:21 Because the way Royce and Barney-Smith is boxing,
06:24 standing nice and tall, not missing the target.
06:27 Perez is really struggling to land his right hand.
06:30 He keeps falling short.
06:31 A bit of damage up beneath the eye as well.
06:33 Just started to swell because of that long punch that Barney-Smith's been landing with power
06:38 and great regularity as well.
06:39 He can't really get off the ropes.
06:41 He can't get out of the corner.
06:42 And it's been target practice at this point as well.
06:44 It's almost like he's punching a speedball when he lets his hands go, Barney-Smith.
06:48 He can't miss.
06:49 Yeah, very patient display again.
06:51 He's not getting what we call greedy, is he?
06:54 He's just working away with his jab, chipping away,
06:57 breaking the opponent down with skillful boxing.
07:00 I think Ben Davidson would be very pleased at this stage.
07:03 Perez, his feet are far too slow, not a lot of head movement.
07:08 Can't really get out of the way of these shots.
07:10 Yeah, really good shot.
07:11 Just staggered Perez again.
07:13 Showing decent resilience to this point to take the final ten seconds of the second round.
07:19 Another good one for Royce and Barney-Smith.
07:21 He's dominating him there.
07:24 He's literally sapping the energy away from Perez with these punches that he's landed.
07:28 Barney-Smith, good round.
07:30 [applause]
07:36 Modern homes can be hectic.
07:38 Things overflow, stress mounts, and suddenly your sanctuary becomes bedlam.
07:44 That's why we build what we build.
07:47 Tailored fitted furniture to create calm out of chaos.
07:51 Making a space feel spacious.
07:54 A room feel roomy.
07:56 Simple, clever storage solutions.
07:58 Helping people live better.
08:00 Hammonds. In order to live better.
08:03 A spring sale is now on.
08:05 Keep him under him, yeah?
08:07 [inaudible]
08:13 Don't mind the jab slip right up to the body.
08:15 Just again, mindful of coming back to your right.
08:18 He's coming back to his right.
08:19 [inaudible]
08:21 The main message coming from Ben Davison between rounds, which is just to be patient.
08:25 He's quite rightly said, "Look, Perez is durable.
08:27 If you load up, he's going to stay in there.
08:29 A sustained attack is probably going to be the best way to get him out."
08:32 Yeah, just be patient and break him down.
08:35 I do think if Barnett Smith, he's got to sense that for himself,
08:39 when to go through the gears and sustain the pressure and really put him under a little bit.
08:43 I think he's breaking him down very well beyond his boxing skills, basically.
08:48 It's a good look like a jab like that and just maintain that gap.
08:53 Not getting greedy, just chipping away.
08:56 It's a good display up to now.
09:00 There's that left hand again, that long straight left.
09:03 What observation would be that we followed Royston Barnett Smith's career right the way through.
09:07 Every time you see him in the ring, there are improvements and things he does better than what we saw him last time.
09:13 He really seems to be honing his craft and really developing every time we see him.
09:18 Yeah, I mean, in his last contest, he got a stoppage in the third round.
09:22 Before that, he fought Angel Gomez.
09:24 He went points over six rounds.
09:26 Christian Lopez Flores, in June, he went six rounds.
09:29 I was really impressed in those contests.
09:31 I think he learned a lot from them.
09:33 And he was very patient in his work.
09:36 He didn't rush it.
09:37 I think he learned a lot for those six rounders.
09:39 But yeah, he's improving all the time.
09:41 And his quality tonight, he's hardly missed with a shot.
09:45 That left hand, the punch that's doing the damage set up by that right jab.
09:54 Southpaw stance, style of Royston Barnett Smith.
09:59 See again, Perez just too far out.
10:05 That's why he's trying to get his foot on the outside, get a little bit closer.
10:08 Bring Barnett Smith around onto his right hand.
10:11 But Barnett Smith's not having any of it at all.
10:13 He's just being patient on the outside, prepared to work at long range and just pick him off.
10:18 Perez at the moment finding it impossible to get inside the reach of Royston Barnett Smith.
10:25 The landing, telling shots of his own, that's a good chance to set up the latest attack.
10:29 Straight left hand again.
10:31 You see, accuracy is a big part of any boxer's work.
10:35 And here you see Barnett Smith landing with most of his shots are hitting the target.
10:40 Perez is just hoping and praying that he misses the target and then falls in.
10:45 That would allow Perez maybe to come back with a counter.
10:47 But he's not making those mistakes, Barnett Smith.
10:50 Keeping the punches long and straight.
10:52 And basically most of them are hitting the target.
10:55 He's not over committing.
10:56 So it's a patient display, good display.
10:59 Inside the final 30 seconds of round three.
11:05 And that was a slip.
11:06 Signaled by the referee, Lee Everett.
11:20 Good work at the end of the round from Barnett Smith.
11:22 He put his punches together so impressively.
11:24 Mixing up his attacks from head to body.
11:28 And there's the bell.
11:29 And he really is looking sharp in there.
11:31 What's wrong with the car?
11:46 It's okay, lads.
11:48 I'm with the AA.
11:50 Bombay mix.
11:51 Because the AA has more expert patrols across the country, you'll be back on the road in no time.
11:58 No wonder more people choose the AA.
12:02 Join today.
12:17 Corner. 10 seconds.
12:19 Second time. Round four.
12:27 It is indeed.
12:33 You see, talking about how the round's gone and what success he's had.
12:37 So yeah, both enjoying it.
12:39 And yeah, they're talking amongst each other.
12:42 It's different.
12:44 It's the perfect illustration tonight as well of just how this sport takes you from one extreme to the other.
12:49 Ben Davison was in Saudi Arabia with Anthony Joshua two weeks ago.
12:54 And now he's in the York Hall, Bethnal Green with Royston Barnett Smith.
12:58 Let's hear from Ben Davison while this round's going on.
13:00 He's going to have a chat with J.D.
13:02 Ben, Royston's working hard in there.
13:05 Just tell me what you're seeing right now and the adjustments you want to see as a coach.
13:08 Yeah, he's very, very durable, this fella.
13:10 Royston's in with some very flush shots and Royston can really whack.
13:13 So the way to get somebody like this out of there is keeping them under threat.
13:17 Keep working consistency and breaking them down.
13:20 So we want to see Royston a little bit more active with his lead hand.
13:23 Keep the guy locked up so that'll give Royston a little bit more creativity with his backhand.
13:27 To work to the body, head, up the middle, round the side.
13:30 Make it a bit easier without the guy leaning back in too much distance for Royston.
13:35 Thanks, Ben, as always.
13:37 Well, there's the shots that put him down.
13:39 That's going to please Ben Davison and I doubt that Perez is going to get up from that.
13:43 He has been durable.
13:45 He's taken so much, but he's counted out by Lee Everett.
13:49 And the demolition job that Royston Barney-Smith promised has come to fruition at York Hall tonight.
13:55 Ben Davison providing the perfect description and Royston Barney-Smith providing the perfect finish.
14:01 Went through the gears at the right time, found the shots.
14:04 Quality left hand, little short left uppercut.
14:07 And then he realized that he'd caught him and then he just finishes him off.
14:10 That was a great display.
14:11 Perez, remember, had only been stopped once in the 11 defeats that he'd had.
14:16 Tough, tough kid. Awkward on that back foot.
14:19 But it was the accuracy, the speed and the power from Royston Barney-Smith that he couldn't cope with.
14:25 But the way he finished him off there, that was a bit of quality, it really was.
14:29 Sets up with the lead hand again, then he brings the backhand into play with a short left uppercut.
14:34 Look in here, there's the jab, there's the jab, there's that left uppercut.
14:37 And again, two or three more and it's all over. Quality work.
14:41 All we need to do is work on Ben Davison's commentary technique so that he can pick up and describe the finish when it comes.
14:47 Yeah, yeah. I'm a bit disappointed in there.
14:51 I mean, where else would you get that kind of insight from a trainer at the top of his profession
14:57 with a young man in there trying to reach the top of his profession as well.
15:00 Fantastic work. I mean, he was described as punch perfect the last time we saw him.
15:04 Would you say the same tonight?
15:05 Oh, absolutely. And I'm even more impressed with him there because that kid was a tough opponent to stop.
15:11 But he broke him down. He made no mistakes. He listened to his corner.
15:14 He's obviously got a very good relationship with Ben Davison.
15:17 It's working to a treat. But that was an impressive display.
15:21 He went through the gears at the right time to get the finish. Yeah, very good indeed.
15:26 So it's another victory and another step along the road.
15:29 Maybe he's going to fight for the WBC youth title next.
15:32 The sky's the limit for this fella. Let's get the official result from Davisoni.
15:36 Ladies and gentlemen, at the time of one minute, 20 seconds in the fourth round,
15:44 your referee calls a halt to this contest.
15:47 Therefore, your winner by KO, Sugar Boy...
15:55 Roy!
15:58 So that's another victory for Royston Barney-Smith.
16:02 9-0, five stoppages. And what an impressive there.
16:06 He really was impressive. Now, he said ahead of this one he wanted a demolition job.
16:13 And it was almost better than a demolition because demolition...
