00:03 An MLB recap from Thursday that sets the stage for the weekend.
00:08 Some series coming to a close throughout the midweek before the teams go to their
00:12 different destinations to start their weekend sets on this Friday.
00:16 Some have already begun.
00:18 DRS, we look back first on what we saw yesterday afternoon up in the Pacific
00:22 Northwest, the divisional duel for a fourth consecutive time this week
00:27 between the Mariners and the Astros.
00:28 Seattle won the first three games, hoping for a four game sweep over Houston in
00:33 the fourth and final yesterday.
00:35 But speaking of four, the Astros score four, the Mariners score none, and
00:40 Houston avoids this sweep with their first victory of the set for nothing.
00:44 Again, Spencer Arriguete, as you shared, very good in the game on the bump for
00:49 the Strohs, and Alex Bregman, a two run shot for
00:52 Houston that got the scoring started.
00:54 Houston needs a win.
00:56 Houston needs many wins.
00:58 They entered yesterday having lost five of their last seven.
01:01 They avoid the sweep up in the Northwest.
01:04 >> Yeah, and it's good for them where they avoided the sweep, right?
01:06 And just try to somewhat hang around in the AOS.
01:09 And that's really not Houston Astros' fault that they're 25 and 32.
01:13 They shouldn't even be in playoff contention with a record like that in
01:17 a normal division to maybe win it.
01:19 You should be looking just at the wild card as maybe as a pipe dream.
01:22 But the fact that the Seattle Mariners at 31 and
01:24 32 are the best team in the AOS, that gives Houston hope all throughout
01:28 the summer that if we just get right, we have a legitimate chance to actually win
01:31 this division when quite frankly, we should have been wiped out of
01:34 the divisional race when just a few short weeks ago,
01:36 we're talking about them 12 and 13 games under 500.
01:40 And this is also a reason that I don't trust Seattle.
01:42 Games like this, yes, I understand you're going for the sweep, and
01:45 all you can ask for in Major League Baseball is to win series, not sweep series.
01:49 We understand that.
01:50 >> Right. >> But you take a look at
01:51 Spencer Arriguete on the mound.
01:52 It's not as if you were throwing a Cy Young guy that was gonna be the stopper
01:55 on your team to make sure you got a victory.
01:57 It's a pitcher that's been quite frankly below average for
01:59 the season that dominated you in your ballpark where you only had four hits and
02:03 also didn't even score a run.
02:05 The Seattle Mariners to me, I just can't trust them,
02:08 which is why what was maybe a week ago, who do you think is gonna win this division?
02:11 I said the Texas Rangers because they got a lot of ammunition eventually
02:14 that will come back to that lineup.
02:16 And they're just too talented here not to be a 500 or better ball club.
02:19 You take a look at the Mariners again, trust level is low for me,
02:22 which also keeps the Houston Astros hanging around and
02:26 believing that eventually they'll get it together.
02:28 >> Seattle four games above 500,
02:31 again the only team within the AOS that has a winning record.
02:35 The Rangers have won three in a row after some poor as play including a quick two
02:39 game sweep in the World Series rematch against Arizona earlier this week in
02:44 Arlington.
02:45 But the Rangers still two games below 500, 27 and 29.
02:49 And the Astros avoiding the sweep yesterday 25 and 32.
02:54 The American League West, the American League West, those divisional odds.
02:59 We have them, there they are.
03:00 Minus 140 for Seattle as the divisional favorites and
03:04 those front runners with a minus money price.
03:07 Donnie, you said you're not buying into either Seattle or Houston.
03:11 Let me ask you the question like this around the Astros who are tied for
03:15 the third best price still to win the American League pennant even being seven
03:19 games below 500 at plus 750.
03:22 You saw the odds there plus 260,
03:25 just five games back of those Seattle Mariners for the top spot in the division.
03:30 Houston is also plus 112 even to see the American League postseason.
03:35 If there was a price, you were going to bet on the Astros,
03:38 figuring things out from the month of June on through the rest of this long
03:42 summer and Major League Baseball.
03:44 What do you think would be that best bet on the Astros?
03:47 >> I mean, it's probably wouldn't even be to be honest, the AL West.
03:51 It would be more of looking at the pennant and you say, well,
03:53 that's ludicrous, Donnie.
03:54 Why would you bet the pennant, not the division?
03:56 Well, I actually don't think technically they're the best team in this division
03:59 this season.
04:00 I still think the Texas Rangers might have a leg up on them because they do have
04:03 a couple pitchers on the DL right now that might be able to come back.
04:06 You take a look at some of those young hitters,
04:07 which includes Josh Jung, expected to come back as well.
04:11 Now having said that, the reasoning behind not winning the division is,
04:14 we know it's more of a crapshoot once you get to the playoffs.
04:17 Pedigree sometimes comes into the equation where if the Astros just make
04:21 the playoffs, yeah, been there, done that.
04:22 Making deep runs, that's what we do.
04:24 Winning world championships, that's what we do.
04:27 So that's where the expectation comes from me.
04:29 Take the bigger price point here to win that as opposed to the division,
04:32 which quite frankly, I don't think they're going to win this year.
04:35 Now, as you pointed out multiple times, you look at the standings,
04:38 they're not far back.
04:39 There's still a long way to go.
04:41 But I've seen enough.
04:42 It isn't like, Ben, you know, hey, you know what?
04:44 It's the first couple weeks of April.
04:46 It's the first couple weeks of May.
04:47 Tomorrow will be in June already.
04:49 And we're still waiting for this team to wake up,
04:52 which they played a lot of base, 25 and 32.
04:54 They haven't woken up yet.
04:55 So they're going to wake up in the next 60 games and be a dominant baseball team?
04:58 I'm not so sure of that.
04:59 But if they do throughout the summer, just hang around in that wild card race,
05:04 nobody's going to look at the Astros if they get into the playoffs, Ben,
05:07 as an easy out.
05:08 That's all.
05:10 I actually think I would look at the division price of plus 260,
05:13 at least at this moment.
05:15 Houston, 5 and 1/2 games back of Seattle.
05:17 They are actually even deeper back, 6 and 1/2 games,
05:20 of what a potential wild card spot would be.
05:23 Like, we don't really look at the wild card race this early on.
05:27 But Donny, there's only six teams in the American League in total
05:31 that are above 500 at this moment.
05:33 And three of them hail from what we all expected
05:36 to be the worst division entering this year, the American League Central.
05:39 That's the Guardians pacing the division, the Kansas City Royals playing
05:43 some really good baseball, and the Minnesota Twins,
05:46 who knocked off KC yesterday.
05:48 We'll look at that game in just a moment.
05:50 National League Central now, four game set wrapping up this week
05:54 in Milwaukee.
05:55 And the Brewers get the last laugh.
05:56 Craig Council's return to the state of Wisconsin.
05:59 The former manager, of course, for Milwaukee.
06:02 And the Brew crew win three of the four games of this set
06:05 with a 6-4 victory at home yesterday.
06:08 Minus 120 money line, favorite total goes over 8 and 1/2.
06:11 Last three games of this series all saw at least nine runs.
06:16 Gary Sanchez, yeah, that Gary Sanchez, who used to play in the Bronx,
06:21 a two-run shot in the eighth for Milwaukee
06:23 when the game was tied at four apiece.
06:25 That the game-winning homer for the Brewers yesterday.
06:29 They got some quality pieces, but I still
06:31 don't know what to make of the Milwaukee Brewers this season.
06:33 33 and 23, which is a good record.
06:36 They look like the class of this division, and I understand that.
06:39 But it's always those central divisions that we just throw in.
06:41 Like, ah, somebody's got to win it, but once they get to the playoffs,
06:44 they'll be balanced because the other teams are better.
06:46 So be it.
06:46 But let's see what Milwaukee does.
06:48 Get some bullpen help back.
06:49 If you can continue to get some of those clutch hitting.
06:51 I like Contreras in the DH role.
06:53 They got good young players coming up, along with guys like Christian Yellich.
06:56 Bully Adamas has been very good this season.
06:58 So the sky is the limit for them in that division,
07:01 but it's always not really the vision.
07:03 What can you do in the playoffs?
07:04 I just don't know if they have the front end talent
07:07 to beat some of the other teams, like the Phillies and the Dodgers,
07:09 if they match up.
07:11 Milwaukee the minus money odds on favorite.
07:13 The Brewers have a five game lead in the National League Central,
07:16 as they're the only team above 500.
07:19 The Cardinals and even 500, but Milwaukee 10 games above them.
07:22 More around MLB next.
07:24 A four game divisional duel coming to a close, as well,
07:28 in Minneapolis yesterday, between the Royals and the Twins
07:31 in the American League Central.
07:33 When we were breaking down the game,
07:35 it was much closer on the money line than where it ended.
07:38 Minnesota around a minus 166.
07:40 Home money line favorite, because Brady Singer,
07:43 who was the probable starter for Kansas City,
07:45 was scratched before we got to some day baseball up in Minneapolis.
07:50 But the Twins did rally.
07:52 They win the finale of the series, seven to six over KC.
07:56 Total sky over eight and a half.
07:58 Minnesota takes three of the four games to win this series
08:01 against the Royals, despite our guy, the RS Vinny Pasquantino.
08:06 Vinny P, the pasquatch, hitting a two run home run
08:09 in the first and three RBIs from Bobby Witt Jr.
08:13 But it was Carlos Correa, bases clearing triple in the sixth.
08:16 And Ryan Jeffers, who hit two long balls for Minnesota.
08:19 The difference, the Twins win the series.
08:21 They win the finale, seven to six.
08:24 - Yeah, good series overall here.
08:25 But if you take a look at the Kansas City Royals,
08:27 even if you scratched a better pitcher,
08:29 you still got a competent performance out of Lynch.
08:31 Five innings pitch, five hits, three runs,
08:33 but only two of those earned.
08:34 That should be good enough to hang around and get a victory.
08:36 But then you have the bullpen coming in,
08:38 stratton two thirds of an inning, four earned runs given up.
08:41 And it was basically a wrap from that point.
08:43 But as you saw, Kansas City in the top of the ninth inning,
08:45 played a two runs to get closer in that seven to six loss.
08:48 But Kansas City, look, still hanging around,
08:50 much like we just talked about the Houston Astros.
08:52 Sometimes after 60 days or two full months
08:55 in the regular season, you really know what you have.
08:57 Kansas City is a pretty good squad here.
08:59 Even getting a scratch pitcher,
09:00 which you would have the advantage in,
09:01 you still got a competent start.
09:03 You could have won that baseball game.
09:04 You end up not doing that.
09:05 So decent win for the twins here,
09:07 but not backing down on the Royals.
09:08 They should be in it to win it this year,
09:10 or at least in that area of, you know what?
09:12 I think we can win this, if not win the division
09:14 and maybe sneak into the playoffs if we need the wild card.
09:17 35 and 23, solid record.
09:20 - The Guardians off yesterday,
09:21 but they have the best record in the Central, 37 and 19.
09:25 Three game advantage over KC,
09:27 but the Royals already have 35 wins this year.
09:30 We said it yesterday with Craig Mish.
09:31 It took Kansas City until August 3rd
09:34 to win their 35th game a season ago.
09:37 A promising start there at Kauffman, to say the least.
09:41 Aaron Judge, he elbowed once again,
09:44 his 18th home run of the year in the New York Yankees,
09:47 an 8-3 victory on the road in Anaheim against the Angels.
09:52 Yankees, minus 176.
09:54 Moneyline favorite, total of 8 1/2 does sky over.
09:57 A good offensive performance out of New York,
10:00 and Aaron Judge, he's playing some good baseball.
10:04 - Yeah, by the way, good start by Rodon.
10:05 Six innings pitch, three earned runs.
10:07 Keep you in that each and every time,
10:08 specifically with that Yankees offense.
10:10 Sandoval came into that game struggling a bit,
10:12 now sitting at a 5.34 ERA, despite going six innings
10:16 and only two earned runs.
10:18 But sometimes you just gotta lean on your big boppers
10:20 in the middle of that lineup.
10:21 Aaron Judge only got one hit,
10:22 but if you're gonna take that one hit each and every night
10:24 and turn it into two RBIs with a home run,
10:26 that's what you'll take out of it.
10:27 And also, how about Juan Soto?
10:29 One for three, gets two walks,
10:30 but also catches in with three RBI,
10:33 hitting 312 on the season.
10:34 First three guys in that lineup,
10:36 and Volpe broke a long streak of getting base hits here,
10:39 but he's still hitting 283.
10:40 Volpe, Soto, Judge, Stanton,
10:42 that's been a very good formidable,
10:44 one through four to open the season.
10:46 And that includes Stanton, only hitting 225.
10:48 Hopefully that number rises higher.
10:50 But if you say at the end of this season,
10:52 Aaron Judge hits 275, which he's sitting at 273 right now,
10:56 he's probably having an MVP-like season,
10:58 'cause that means a lot of long balls
11:00 included in that 275 average.
11:02 - The race for 40 is on today.
11:05 The Yankees, 39 wins, tied for the most in the bigs
11:08 alongside the Philadelphia Phillies.
11:10 Also 39 wins.
11:12 Aaron Judge, 18 home runs alongside Kyle Tucker
11:15 and Gunnar Henderson, the most in all of MLB.
11:19 And Juan Soto, that base is clearing triple
11:21 in the seventh yesterday, three RBIs.
11:24 He's got 49 this year, tied for the second most
11:27 in Major League Baseball.
11:29 You've got the two teammates in pinstripes
11:31 that are the two front runners
11:32 to win the American League MVP, Juan Soto,
11:35 the favorite at this moment.
11:36 I get, you can't pat yourself on your back in this industry
11:41 because there are as many losses as there are wins.
11:44 But we called it yesterday.
11:45 The Mets, a victory at home as an underdog
11:49 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, three to two.
11:51 And we wanted to see that apple rise in the outfield,
11:55 maybe embodied with a young Kevin Walsh on its face.
11:59 Francisco Lindor, a home run.
12:01 J.D. Martinez, a home run.
12:04 The Mets, back.
12:05 - Yeah, how about that closed door meeting
12:08 equates to a victory here.
12:09 Lindor does go four for four with that home run.
12:12 He's actually been playing much, much better,
12:14 still only hitting 225 on the season.
12:16 But sometimes you need some breaks, which includes
12:18 maybe one of the better pitchers in baseball,
12:20 Zach Gallin, getting knocked out very early in that game.
12:23 Not because he got hit around, but because he got injured.
12:25 And the Mets still needed a comeback victory
12:27 against a lowly Diamondbacks team right now, 25 and 31.
12:31 But you'll take wins anywhere you can get them.
12:34 - The Mets entered yesterday,
12:35 losing 15 of their last 19 games.
12:38 But now the win streak begins up at Citi Field.
12:41 (upbeat music)
12:44 (bell ringing)
