Former footballer champion Barry Cable has pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting a young girl decades ago. Cable has appeared in court to face the allegations, which date back to the late 1960’s.

00:07 Court. The 80 year old is facing seven charges, five of indecent dealing with a child under
00:13 13 and two of unlawful carnal knowledge of a child under 13. It's alleged the offences
00:19 occurred in Perth between January 1967 and April 1968. Cable was supported during his
00:25 court appearance by his sons and represented by high profile lawyer Tom Percy Casey. The
00:31 former football champion was first on the court list. His lawyer said his client would
00:35 be pleading not guilty to all the charges and he did. Cable won two VFL premierships
00:41 with North Melbourne, a club he went on to coach, as well as four Waffle premierships
00:45 and three Sandover medals for being the competition's best and fairest player. The charges follow
00:50 a judgment in a civil case last year that found on the balance of probabilities he had
00:55 abused another young girl in the 1960s and 70s. He's always denied those allegations
01:00 and has never been charged in relation to that matter. After the civil judgment he was
01:04 removed from the Australian Football Hall of Fame and the West Australian Football Hall
01:08 of Fame. His bail has been continued and he'll appear in court again in August.
