00:00 An association has questioned the Malaysian Medical Council's double standards in recognising
00:07 specialists trained at public hospitals.
00:10 The Malaysian Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons said while those doing
00:14 their master's studies at these hospitals are recognised by MMC, parallel pathway trainees
00:19 at the same hospitals are not.
00:21 It was understood that MMC's refusal to register parallel pathway graduates was based on provisions
00:27 in the Medical Act that do not recognise health ministry hospitals as training centres.
00:31 MATCVS Secretary John Chan said he found the provisions strange as almost all master's
00:37 clinical training programmes at local universities are conducted in public hospitals.
00:42 He cited the Master of Surgery course at Universiti Kemangsaan Malaysia as an example of a successful
00:48 course that had produced many general surgeons.
00:51 Chan also stressed that graduates from the parallel pathway programme offered by the
00:55 Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh were fit to work as cardiothoracic surgeons at
01:00 public hospitals.
01:02 The MMC is currently embroiled in a controversy with parallel pathway specialists and medical
01:07 genetics graduates over having their qualifications listed in the National Specialist Register.
