00:00 Hi my name is Sam Quine, Digital Reporter for the Lancashire Post and I'm heading to
00:05 the Britannia Tap and Grill in Osselt Whistle. This was after the pub was
00:10 recently named Lancashire Pub of the Year at the National Pub and Bar Awards
00:14 2024. The pub located on Haslingdon Road beat out some tough competition to win
00:21 the award so come with me as I go to see if it really lives up to its name.
00:27 After taking in the Britannia Tap and Grills warm, cosy pub atmosphere as well
00:39 as having some delicious food off of the menu I went to speak to food and
00:43 beverage manager Callum Hartley and ask what his reaction was to winning
00:47 Lancashire Pub of the Year. It was a bit of a shock really, especially with us
00:54 having another pub just down the road. We won the same award last year so we
00:59 didn't really think that you know given the location we would have thought that
01:03 they would have branched it out into another kind of area so when we got told
01:10 that we picked up this year our new pub it was something special. What can we do to make it a
01:17 different vibe, a different offering compared to what we do down the road
01:21 where we're in the Michelin Guide even though you know the food's very, what can I say,
01:29 pub classics but with our own twist we wanted to create something what's not
01:36 easily accessible in the local area so we come up with the idea of turning the
01:41 place into a steakhouse which initially we didn't think it was gonna work really
01:47 after the first couple of weeks. We had a lot of feedback off customers saying that
01:52 they would like to see more pub classics on the menu not just steaks so we took
01:58 on board the customers comments and we created a menu what really does appeal to
02:03 the vast majority of people. That's great and kind of what would you say sets apart
02:10 the Britannia from other pubs and kind of why do you think you were eventually
02:14 chosen to win this award? Our offering and how we source and look after our
02:21 produce as well. We've got our own dryager so all the meat that we're
02:26 getting, the big joints, we dry age ourselves, we butcher it down ourselves.
02:31 The wine, the beer offering is from entry-level to premium so there's
02:38 offering there for everyone as well. And on just the kind of final note are
02:43 there any exciting future plans you'd like to let customers know or kind of
02:47 how do you want to keep both businesses not just the Britannia going forward in
02:53 terms of successful model? Just thinking outside the box you know taking the
02:58 past bless travel by next year we're probably gonna look at upgrading the
03:02 outside area so power an outside bar, deck out the area so there's a lot more
03:07 seats. The back of the pub is very much a sun trap so in the summertime it's
03:12 really really good vibes out there.
03:15 you
