Manchester United defeated Manchester City 2-1 to win the 2024 FA Cup final and guarantee their participation in next season’s Europa League. The win also means that Newcastle United will not play in European competition next season, with Chelsea instead dropping to the Conference League and the Magpies out of Europe all together.

00:00 So, Newcastle United will not play in European competition next season after it was confirmed
00:07 they missed out altogether following Manchester United's 2-1 FA Cup final win over Manchester
00:12 City. Now, both Manchester United headed to Wembley knowing that a win would see them
00:17 not only win the FA Cup for the 13th time but also qualify for the Europa League. A
00:22 win for Manchester City would have meant Newcastle United play Conference League football and
00:26 Chelsea who finished sixth would play Europa League football. Now, at the end of the game,
00:31 it was most of Boogie's favourites, I think most football fans thought Manchester City
00:35 would defeat Man U. Eric Ten Haag looked like potentially being sacked, that could still
00:41 happen. But yeah, the form guys and the odds, Boogie's, everything went, we think Man City
00:46 would complete a domestic double for the second year in a row. Of course, they completed the
00:50 treble last year. But as we know, that's not necessarily how it happens. And yeah, it was
00:56 a brilliant first half for Manchester United. They thoroughly deserved to go in ahead 2-0.
00:59 Man City just didn't look up. They were lower tempo, they weren't at their game, they were
01:06 just sort of 70-80% of what they normally are. And to be fair to Man United, they were
01:11 bang on it and went in 2-0 ahead their second goal in particular. It was a lovely flowing
01:14 move and it was finished off by Kobi Mainu. So yeah, it was, they went in at half-time
01:19 2-0. But even then, we've seen Manchester City so many times come back from situations
01:23 like that where even though they're 2-0 down, you think they've got something in the tank
01:28 to find a way back in the game. But that didn't happen. They pressed Erling Haaland at the
01:31 bar, Alvarez missed a real sit-out. But yeah, it was one of those days. It felt like Newcastle
01:38 at Wembley really did. It felt like, despite it being Man City, this almost all-conquering
01:44 Manchester City, it felt like Newcastle were there and it just wasn't there, do you? Jeremy
01:48 Dock who, I think it was the 87th minute goal, pulled one back. But City never really had
01:54 the chance after that, I don't think. And Arnaud made a couple of good saves before
01:57 that goal from Kyle Walker from outside the area. But yeah, that's it. Newcastle United
02:02 won't be playing in Europe next year and it's a big blow for them in their project. They
02:06 really needed European football, certainly some sort of form of European football every
02:10 year. Obviously, the Champions League qualification for the Champions League last year was fantastic
02:14 and far beyond what they probably thought. But to then go from that to no European football
02:20 the season after is a big blow. They've played their own part in this. No one can take the
02:26 blame other than Newcastle United. If you look at it, first of all, their performance
02:30 in the Champions League along with Manchester United and other clubs in Europe means that
02:33 that fifth place wasn't open. If that fifth place for the Champions League had been open
02:38 to English clubs, it would have trickled down and Newcastle would have been playing European
02:42 football regardless of the FA Cup final. So that's the first thing you've got to look
02:47 at. Second one, of course, you look at the injuries, but realistically, you've got games
02:53 against Everton, Luton, Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest. They're the ones that Newcastle didn't
02:58 pick up enough points in. You've got to remember, a couple more points would have seen them
03:02 finish above Chelsea and there would have been European football regardless, but that didn't
03:06 happen. They've let themselves down in periods of the season. That sort of December, January
03:11 period was a real bad time for them. And then they managed to pick themselves up. You've
03:15 got to give them credit for picking themselves up, sort of around March after that international
03:18 break, really. But then heading into the final week of the season, they had Brighton, Manchester
03:24 United and Brentford to play. Now they picked up four points, which to be fair, is on any
03:30 sort of given season, if you took four points from them games, two away games and Brighton
03:34 at home, you would have probably said that's okay. But that's a stage of the season that
03:38 needed wins. Brighton at home was a big miss there. And then Manchester United at Old Trafford,
03:42 yes, they might not have the best record, but if they'd gone there and won, which Fulham
03:45 says they probably should have, they would have had that phone in their own hands going
03:48 into that last game against Brentford. And as much as they did defeat Brentford, it's
03:53 now almost meaningless because they do miss out on European football. So yeah, you can
03:57 look back at injuries. In the world, there'll be plenty of people writing season reviews.
04:01 I'm sure my colleague Dom's Girl will be writing a brilliant one in the coming days. I'll certainly
04:05 have a look back at some key moments from the season. But yeah, you've got to look at
04:10 those games, particularly the home games, as I said, against Everton, dropped points,
04:15 Luton dropping points, Bournemouth dropping points. Although Bournemouth were a good team,
04:18 but you've got to be beating them kind of teams and picking up wins if you want to be
04:24 that sort of team that's qualified, getting into Europe every year. And yeah, where does
04:29 this leave Nigasso? Well, it leaves Nigasso heading into a summer window without European
04:32 football to be able to track players. Now they've done that in the past. They managed
04:36 to get Bruno here, Trippier here without European football, Isak and Bottman came without European
04:42 football, although they did qualify for European football that season. So it's going to be
04:47 real test to try and get that calibre of players to come with a season without European football.
04:50 They've of course got no European football to try and convince someone like Bruno to
04:53 stay, Isak to stay. Now again, clubs have to meet their valuation, have to pay money
04:58 for them to, you know, for Nigasso to sell. So it's not just because they've got Europe
05:02 that there's no guarantee that they're going to go, but it's going to make this Nigasso
05:05 project a lot harder as a sell. Really, you know, they could get away with one year, but
05:11 certainly next year with no European football, there's no excuse for them not to get back
05:15 in the Champions League, have a good go in the Cups and, you know, and really put pressure
05:20 on the best teams in the league. They did it last season without European football and
05:23 they did brilliantly last year. Obviously injuries have really hurt them this year and
05:28 their inability to sort of, to beat the lower teams, which they were doing really well last
05:33 year and their away record as well has been terrible this year. So there's a few things
05:36 that we need to focus on next year and without the distraction of European football, they
05:40 have a chance to do that, but it's a crucial summer now and a crucial few weeks for Eddie
05:43 Howe and his team to get them up fitness levels. Obviously they've got the major tournaments
05:48 to consider as well, but then to get the fitness levels up, they need to hit the ground running
05:50 in August and they need to really strengthen their team in the market any way they can
05:54 because, yeah, it's a blow for Newcastle today. One that, you know, was avoidable of their
06:01 own work, you know, as mentioned that last week of the season, a couple of games at home,
06:07 they were the real killers for them, but now they have to pick themselves up for a real
06:10 crucial summer because next year, as mentioned before, Newcastle United will not be playing
06:14 European football.
