DOJ and State Attorneys General Take on Live Nation: Federal Lawsuit Alleges Ticket Pricing Monopoly

The U.S. Department of Justice and 30 state and district attorneys general have filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation Entertainment and its subsidiary Ticketmaster. The suit alleges that Live Nation has created a monopoly on live event ticket prices in the United States by engaging in anticompetitive practices, such as retaliating against competitors, locking out rivals with exclusive contracts, restricting musicians' access to venues, and acquiring smaller companies perceived as threats. The DOJ is seeking "structural relief," asking the court to break up the Live Nation-Ticketmaster merger, which it had approved in 2010.
