Transcript
00:00 Hello and welcome along to Invicta Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:21 up all of Kent's sporting action.
00:23 I'm Bartholomew Hall and here's what to expect on this Friday the 24th of May.
00:29 Battle of the Bridge.
00:31 Kent strive to try and get their second win of the season against old rivals Essex.
00:37 Hitting their goals.
00:38 Margate weight loss football group up for an award after losing a collective 150kg.
00:45 And action replay.
00:46 We once again take a look at the clips and pics of you, the KMTV audience, getting active
00:51 around the county.
00:55 But we start today with the news that this weekend Jake Hill will be heading back out
00:59 on the circuit as the British Touring Car Championship heads to Snetterton for the third
01:04 round of the season.
01:06 Jake Hill is looking to keep up his good form at the Norfolk track after finishing second
01:10 on four occasions at the circuit.
01:13 Currently sitting fourth in the championship however, after suffering a DNF last time out,
01:17 Jake says the team have been working tirelessly to resolve any issues and that he's looking
01:23 forward to coming back fighting this time around.
01:28 Football fans across the country have been writing to political party leaders urging
01:32 them to save the football governance bill as the announcement of the general election
01:36 this week means the bill's progress has been halted.
01:39 It comes as three Kent clubs have also been calling for politicians to save the future
01:43 of football this week.
01:44 Maidstone United, Tunbridge Angels and Ebbsfleet United bosses are all members of Fair Game,
01:50 a group that is campaigning for fairer governance in football.
01:53 Well following their meeting this week at the home of Wimbledon, I caught up with Tunbridge
01:58 Angels president Dave Netherstreet who explained why the bill is so important to the lower
02:02 league clubs.
02:04 The money you achieve helps keep you going through the season.
02:09 If like Maidstone you have a really great run, which is fantastic for them, it boosts
02:15 the whole system and then you can invest and put the money into the club.
02:20 To take that away, it's not necessarily the prize money that you get as well, it's the
02:26 exposure.
02:28 Everybody knows Maidstone, everyone's talked about Maidstone, Maidstone's on television,
02:32 radio, everywhere.
02:36 Good luck to them and it expanded their market.
02:39 So it's just fantastic, it's what it means to a local club.
02:47 Now we'll stick with football and after this weekend the Football League season will finally
02:51 come to an end and all eyes will be turning towards the pre-season.
02:54 This week Gillingham have been announcing an array of friendly fixtures to supplement
02:59 your summer.
03:00 The latest of which is a visit to National League side Southend United on Saturday 27th
03:06 July, a team managed by former Gilles midfielder Kevin Maher.
03:11 The trip to Rootes Hall will come a week after Gillingham's home friendly against championship
03:15 side Watford on 20th July.
03:18 In the Midway club will also face Dartford, Woking and Chatham in their pre-season fixtures.
03:26 And finally, an under-13s football team from Lyd are celebrating after they won a tournament
03:31 at League One Charlton Athletics ground.
03:35 The girls found themselves at a disadvantage at the start of the seven-a-side competition
03:40 with the regular goalkeeper out injured and no back-up in the squad.
03:44 The team was nervous but when they set out onto the field it didn't show with a dominating
03:49 midfield led by Madison Smith and Lisa Hilding.
03:52 Cub coach Lox said it was an amazing day with lots of support from the parents in the stands.
03:58 A day our girls will never forget.
03:59 Well don't forget, Kent Online, our sister publication, is looking for your clubs to
04:04 do get in touch with them for a special supplement that's coming out this summer to coincide
04:09 with the Euros.
04:10 Now, moving on to cricket.
04:12 And Kent are back in action.
04:14 This bank holiday weekend following their defeat to Somerset last week.
04:17 Here's a round-up of how they've been getting on throughout the season so far and what's
04:22 going to be happening over the next few weeks.
04:24 It's exciting isn't it Jack?
04:25 I'm joined now by our reporter Jack Darkin.
04:28 T20's on the way but first of all let's talk about this weekend.
04:32 What's it looking like going into it?
04:34 Well Kent have had a bit of a mixed form going into today's fixture.
04:37 They've only won one of their last six games.
04:39 They've had three draws and two defeats to Surrey and Somerset last time out.
04:43 So those results do leave Kent second to bottom in the division one with 58 points, just five
04:48 points above last place Lancashire.
04:50 So moving on to the actual game itself.
04:52 Now there are three changes today made into the Kent side.
04:55 Swain Opole has been dropped, Nathan Gilchrist through injury as well and so has George Garrity
04:59 has been left out of the side.
05:00 However they were strengthened by the return of Wes Agar, Matt Parkinson and Arafat Boyan
05:05 also into the team as well.
05:07 So Essex won the toss and they elected to bat first and it turned out to be a very good
05:10 decision for them.
05:11 It was a very, very difficult day for Kent in the field today.
05:14 However they did finally manage to find the breakthrough with Matt Parkinson taking the
05:18 first wicket of the day after Dean Elgold was stumped by wicket keeper Harry Finch.
05:22 There's a great bit of wicket keeping for him behind the stumps.
05:25 Not too long after that as well, Joey Everson managed to dismiss Nick Brown of his clean
05:29 bowl with a beautiful in-swing a bit of bowling.
05:31 You'll be able to see it on your screen in just a moment's time.
05:36 And there was a little bit more success for Kent in the evening session.
05:39 They managed to get two more wickets but the day did very much belong to Essex and as it
05:43 stands, last time I've checked, Essex have ended the day on 287 for four with chances
05:49 very far and few for Kent in the field and they'll be hoping to take some early wickets
05:52 tomorrow morning.
05:53 Yeah, county championship season hasn't been going the way of Kent so far but hopefully
05:57 things will turn around.
05:59 But of course all eyes will be turning to the T20 blast kicking off next week.
06:04 Give us a bit of a preview to that.
06:05 Well, absolutely, yes, as you said, this is going to be the last county championship
06:09 game for around about a month now.
06:11 We expect the return of that on the 23rd of June when Kent host in Lancashire at Spitfire
06:16 Ground.
06:17 But yes, beginning towards the end of next week is the much-loved return of the T20 blast.
06:24 So Kent, they last won the tournament in 2021 so they'll be looking to replicate that success
06:28 this season as well.
06:29 So they'll kickstart their campaign away from home against Middlesex next Friday followed
06:34 by another away game against Hampshire Hawks.
06:37 Kent's first home game of the season, I think you said you're going to it as well, is against
06:40 defending champion Somerset on the 7th of June as well.
06:43 There's also a chance as well to get to experience some different players.
06:46 For example, Kent have managed to sign Xavier Bartlett on a season-long line.
06:51 So it'll be very exciting to see him in action as well and it looks to be a very exciting
06:54 few weeks for Kent.
06:55 It's always an exciting one in Canterbury in the evenings for the summer when the T20
06:59 is on.
07:00 Thank you very much for that, Jack.
07:02 Now it's time to remind you that you can keep up to date with all the latest sports news,
07:05 interviews and features from right here on Invicta Sport by heading over to our website
07:09 kmtv.co.uk.
07:10 Once you're there, click on the sports tab because you'll see videos like this one from
07:15 when we spoke to Dame Kelly Holmes about what we can all be doing to better enhance our
07:19 health.
07:20 Take a look.
07:21 If you think about it, it doesn't actually have to cost a lot to move.
07:24 So you go out for a brisk walk.
07:26 You don't have to have any form of, you know, special clothing for that.
07:31 Even doing anything, setting yourself a goal.
07:34 I do step goals.
07:35 Sometimes I don't, like I'm sitting here in this room all day long.
07:39 I have a 12,500 step count because I'm mad and I'm, you know, I always set myself something
07:45 higher than I think anyone else is going to do.
07:48 That's just my brain.
07:49 But I'm sitting here now at 11 o'clock, only done 1,500 steps.
07:54 So somewhere in my day, I've got to think, right, in between my breaks, I've got to get
07:58 up because I've set myself something and it gives me a motivation to do it.
08:04 Exercise is one way of combating bad mental health because actually what happens is, is
08:10 you're going out, you're doing something firstly for you, doing something that's going to re-energise
08:15 you, re-motivate you, give you fresh air, get the body stimulated, moving, and it can
08:21 be, have such a positive effect on your mental health.
08:25 And it's something you've actually been really open about in the past, talking about mental
08:29 health and struggles that come along with that.
08:31 And it's something a lot of people deal with and a lot of people have that blockade to
08:35 sort of getting out.
08:36 I suppose the minute you get out and you get that exercise, that starts to dissipate.
08:40 But how did being open and talking about mental health help you?
08:44 And then I suppose because of the platform you have, how has that then helped others,
08:47 do you think?
08:49 Well I think from my point of view, talking about my mental health was critical to realising,
08:54 to putting a message out there that even though I'd achieved something really, really big
08:58 that was on a public platform, it didn't mean that I didn't struggle to get there.
09:03 And whereas, you know, when I came back, especially from Athens, I got put on this real high pedestal
09:10 because I was the first person to win two gold medals at the same games.
09:14 It wasn't where social media now puts loads of people out there, it was in a premier sport
09:18 like athletics and everyone thought, you know, I was having these titles of superhuman and
09:23 incredible and whatever.
09:25 And I was like, well I've done something pretty damn good.
09:28 But, you know, I mean to get there was not easy.
09:32 And I felt that if I was talking about the struggles, that would be more empowering to
09:37 say that even though I've struggled, I still succeeded.
09:40 Because for me, that's a message to say that we're actually really strong people, no matter
09:44 what we go through.
09:45 A huge summer of sport, Euros, Olympics, Paris, lots of opportunities to be talking about,
09:51 watching sport, we're going to be seeing it all over the news, all over our TV screens.
09:56 You think this is a huge time where people pick up, not only is the weather getting warmer,
10:00 but actually we're seeing some representatives from across the world doing some amazing sport.
10:05 Do you think that's a key to getting people outside?
10:08 I definitely think it sort of promotes that mindset to do more, especially during the
10:13 summer.
10:14 You know, when you're inspired by something you watch, you know, it does get people think,
10:19 oh, I want to give it a go.
10:21 And unfortunately, kind of that weans off after.
10:24 But what it does do during there, there'll be a huge amount of people, especially young
10:28 people that are inspired by what the Olympic movement or the Euros or any other major event
10:33 brings.
10:34 Because everybody that takes part started somewhere.
10:39 Like when I was an Olympian, I started running around Tunbridge Athletics Club after being
10:44 at Hugh Christie School.
10:45 You know, I wasn't an Olympian.
10:46 I started at a club and I started at that club because I had a talent and I was 11,
10:52 12 years old.
10:54 And what happened was, is watching the Olympic Games when I was 14 made me so inspired to
10:59 think because I love the Olympic movement.
11:01 I saw British people achieving and it created a dream.
11:05 Now that dream could have been a fluffy cloud just up in the air.
11:08 But actually what it did was promote a person, a young person who had a talent to commit
11:14 to doing some training, to see the results and to think they want to be better and to,
11:18 you know, do this massive feat.
11:20 Dame Kelly, it's been an absolute pleasure to talk to you.
11:23 Just before I let you go, if you had to give our viewers one task, one challenge to do
11:27 tonight to get themselves moving, what would it be?
11:30 Oh my gosh.
11:31 OK.
11:32 One, one thing.
11:33 Well, a lot of people have a phone these days and on it has little health apps.
11:37 Go on there, see how many steps you've done.
11:39 Now they always used to say that 10,000 was like a healthy kind of way of being.
11:45 But even if you've never done it and you get anything between five and 10,000, you're doing
11:50 great.
11:51 Makes you excited for the Olympics, doesn't it?
11:52 We'll be back after this break with plenty more.
11:54 Thanks.
