00:00 It's pretty loud down here, Joe, as you can probably hear behind me.
00:06 There is some pretty cool artwork on display being projected onto Customs House.
00:11 This is the artwork of Reg Mombasa.
00:14 Now I can't see what you're looking at right now, but earlier as we were setting up I saw
00:19 a robotic kangaroo shooting lasers out of its eyes.
00:24 We've also seen projections of a man surfing on a thong, so it's all pretty exciting down
00:30 here, Joe.
00:31 And there's quite a huge number of people who have come down for the first night of
00:36 Vivid Festival.
00:37 And when those lights were switched on, right on 6 o'clock tonight we saw, of course, the
00:42 sails of the Opera House light up and fireworks right across Circular Quay.
00:48 Sydney, after a few difficult years, it's great to see so many people out and about
00:53 enjoying everything that this city has to offer.
00:56 And we're here tonight for the light and the music and the dancing, but the special thing
01:01 about Vivid is that it brings people together, it brings our community together.
01:05 Yeah, so they've gone to town this year with that launch.
01:08 I had never seen so many fireworks before associated with the opening of it.
01:14 Is it already pretty busy?
01:15 The crowds at Vivid each year are notoriously pretty full on.
01:20 What's it like for opening night?
01:24 It's pretty crowded down here, Joe, and organisers are expecting to see about three and a half
01:28 million people through Vivid this year.
01:31 That's about half of the population of Sydney.
01:34 So it's quite a spectacular sight.
01:37 There's about eight kilometres of lights, essentially, for people to walk through.
01:44 An eight kilometre light trail all the way from Circular Quay up to near where you are
01:50 in Ultimo, Joe.
01:51 There's on the goods line out there, there's a tonne of food options and lots of things
01:57 to see and do.
01:58 And if you're anything like me as well, Joe, you can also bring some Vivid home with you.
02:03 There's lots of lights for people to look at all over the all over Sydney landmarks,
02:09 but there's also some little bits and pieces you can pick up along the way yourself.
02:14 Can't work out quite what that thing is you're holding there.
02:17 But Mel, you're only a recent addition to Sydney, aren't you?
02:22 And you haven't seen this before?
02:24 No, I haven't.
02:25 This is my first Vivid, which is why I'm so excited about my...
02:29 I think it's a balloon of some sort.
02:32 It's shaped like a star.
02:33 It's got lights on it.
02:35 It's colour, it's fun.
02:36 This is, yeah, my first Vivid and it's very exciting.
02:39 Yeah, well, it's such a cool thing to see and I can highly recommend wandering around
02:43 to the Botanic Gardens and walking through that archway there at the Botanic Gardens.
02:49 It's a beautiful thing to do.
02:52 Great tips.
02:53 Thanks, Joe.
