00:00 The third and final reading of the Camera is the legalization of divorce in the Philippines.
00:06 The only state in the world that has no divorce law is the Philippines and the Vatican.
00:11 Tina Panganiban Peretz has a report.
00:13 Not all marriages are happy endings.
00:21 Like Mila, she doesn't have a real name.
00:24 She was forced to marry a man who is pregnant with her.
00:27 For nine years, I forced her to leave me when no one knew who she was.
00:33 No one knew that she was going to kill me, that she was going to throw me inside the house twice.
00:38 I am mentally, physically, sexually abused.
00:41 I have all kinds of abuse.
00:50 The reason why the panel of judges for the absolute divorce was forced to read the third and final reading of the Camera, was because Mila was crying with joy.
00:57 In the panel of judges, a petition must be filed to the court for the divorce of the married couple.
01:04 Next, there is a 60-day cooling off period where the couple can return.
01:10 If the couple cannot fix the problem, the hearing will start.
01:15 The grounds for the absolute divorce are physical violence to the spouse or child,
01:21 forcing the spouse or child to enter prostitution,
01:25 drug, alcohol, and gambling addiction, marital infidelity,
01:29 abuse in the life of the spouse or child, and abandonment of the family.
01:34 This is also cheaper than other forms of separation because the petition will cost up to P50,000.
01:42 It is also possible that the petitioner will not pay any fee if the value of his property exceeds P2.5 million.
01:51 But if the court can prove that one of the married couple was forced by her husband to petition for divorce,
01:58 or they were forced to be together, they will be jailed for five years and fined P300,000.
02:05 If the court cannot provide sustenance, they can be fined P50,000 to P200,000 and they can be jailed.
02:13 This is half the battle won for us.
02:15 We will go to the Senate to approve the counterpart measure.
02:23 I have no plans to oppose or oppose this.
02:27 According to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines or CBCP, the marriage that was forced by the Church is not enough.
02:35 Divorce is also not the solution to the problematic marriage.
02:39 Tina Panganiban Perez reporting for GMA Integrated News.
