03:12 Because that became my selling point, I think, for them.

03:22 I want to learn more about your life before you became a showbiz star,
03:26 before you became a GMA, before you became a first hit.
03:29 So you were a flight attendant.
03:31 Did you have any other jobs before you became a GMA?
03:34 Before I became a flight attendant,
03:36 I worked for a hotel here in Manila as a sales executive.
03:41 So I was handling events.
03:43 I tried handling, for a time, social events,
03:46 so private, personal, like birthday, weddings.
03:49 It lasted for about a year and a half.
03:53 But the workload I had there was a bit overwhelming,
03:56 so I resigned.
03:58 I was unemployed for about five months before the flight attendant thing happened.
04:02 Oh, wait. So your work as a sales executive,
04:05 that was your first job out of school?
04:07 Yes, right after graduation.
04:08 I actually applied in different companies.
04:11 Then I was hired at a hotel.
04:13 The job offer was generous.
04:15 So I didn't refuse.
04:16 Though, in my case,
04:18 I was only 20 years old when I graduated.
04:21 They get hired according to the PADCOR guidelines.
04:23 They can only hire employees who are 21 and above years old.
04:29 So I waited for about five months before I got employed.
04:34 But the job offer was already there.
04:36 I just waited until I turned 21 before I could join the team.
04:40 What was your college course?
04:42 I took up Bachelor of Science in Business Administration,
04:45 major in marketing.
04:46 Ah, okay.
04:47 And it was my choice to take up marketing management.
04:51 You really have a disclaimer, "It was my choice."
04:54 Why? Who else would have?
04:55 Meaning not your parents?
04:57 Well, yeah. I mean, most of us,
04:59 well, in this batch of college graduates,
05:02 most of my batchmates would say,
05:05 "Why did you take marketing or whatsoever? Or like nursing?"
05:08 And mostly, they choose nursing because that's what their parents want.
05:12 And there's more opportunity.
05:13 Which is, I mean, it is true.
05:15 But for me, I had the liberty and the freedom
05:18 to choose whatever I want in college.
05:20 My parents didn't interfere.
05:22 I would take their advice for sure.
05:24 Whatever would be better for me.
05:25 So they would know.
05:26 But they gave me a chance and freedom
05:30 to choose what I really wanted.
05:32 That's great, right?
05:32 They didn't force you to help them.
05:35 Yes. So that's it.
05:36 So marketing, and then I practiced it as a salesperson.
05:39 And then, customer service is still being a flight attendant.
05:43 So being able to talk to people,
05:44 conversing, and trying to pacify them whenever they have feedback
05:48 or like, there are late passengers.
05:50 That's where I applied to be a marketing graduate.
05:53 Hold on, Kaloy.
05:54 How did you go from being a sales executive?
05:56 I mean, you said that the workload was overwhelming at a very young age.
06:00 But how did you make the jump from a corporate or office job
06:03 to being a flight attendant?
06:05 Did somebody suggest to you that,
06:07 "Why don't you try being a flight attendant?"
06:09 Did you watch something?
06:10 Or did you dream of being a flight attendant when you were young?
06:14 You would expect that I might have a dream, actually.
06:17 But the selling point of being a flight attendant is
06:19 you get to travel the world.
06:21 Which I was able to when I was still a flight attendant.
06:24 But I wasn't dreaming of being a flight attendant, honestly.
06:28 Even the sales, I wasn't thinking of becoming a salesperson.
06:30 I wasn't either.
06:31 But that's where I got my inspiration, I guess.
06:34 But it turned out pretty well for me.
06:37 I learned to love everything that comes to my life.
06:40 How did I transition from being a salesperson to a flight attendant?
06:44 So right after resigning,
06:46 for five months, I was unemployed.
06:49 I wasn't doing anything.
06:50 I was able to save up from my earnings.
06:52 Then I used it for travel.
06:54 I used it while I was resting.
06:58 And then my friend forwarded me an email
07:00 that he knew I was unemployed.
07:02 "Hey, Carlo. I really miss you."
07:05 "So Carlo, why don't you try opening slots here for flight attendants?"
07:10 So I opened a batch of flight attendants.
07:11 I trained again.
07:12 The email was still internal.
07:14 And they weren't announcing the hiring yet to the mass public.
07:18 So I got my first dibs on the walk-in.
07:22 And then, the first hiring was on Monday.
07:24 They hadn't announced it yet.
07:25 So I was able to apply for the connections inside.
07:29 So I was the first one.
07:31 That morning, in the queue,
07:33 and very early in the morning,
07:35 I was at the headquarter's office on Domestic Road.
07:38 But not until two hours after,
07:41 they were about to start the queue.
07:44 But I was part of the first batch.
07:47 And then, it was a one-day process,
07:49 a hiring process with Zia.
07:50 In the morning, they would do the physical screening, the usual.
07:53 We were going to enter per batch.
07:54 Five guys.
07:55 And right after that,
07:56 they would release you right away.
07:57 And then, after a couple of minutes or hours,
08:00 they would call you again.
08:01 "You're back for an impact interview."
08:03 - Which is... - Oh, wow!
08:05 Yes. It's like a group.
08:06 It's like you would be facing in front of each other
08:09 your co-applicants.
08:11 And you would ask questions.
08:13 Actually, no one would ask you questions.
08:14 There would be someone who would be supervising.
08:17 But it's actually you who's going to ask each other questions.
08:21 Wow! I didn't know the application process was that intense.
08:25 I thought it's normal.
08:26 It's like an application for a job where you're interviewed by HR.
08:30 - Yeah. - Oh, actually...
08:31 There are different stages of interviews.
08:34 First, physical screening.
08:35 And then, impact interview, which is a group.
08:37 And then, the last one is a five-minute final interview
08:40 with the HR head.
08:42 And that's it.
08:43 And then, you would just wait for their advice
08:44 if you passed or not.
08:46 So, how long did it take for you to know that you passed?
08:49 That same week, Friday,
08:50 I got the email that the job offer is being prepared.
08:54 So, let us know if you want to push through with the application.
08:57 Of course, as someone who is unemployed and running out of savings,
09:00 I was like, "I don't want to!"
09:01 I'll just get a new job.
09:03 And I was just so lucky.
09:05 I think everything turned out in my favor, Ms. Pia.
09:08 Because my batch members during the training...
09:10 Because you would be on board right after you signed the job offer.
09:13 You would have to take two months of unpaid training
09:17 before you can be put on the front line.
09:20 They can put you on the front line, like on the flight.
09:23 And then, you have to do your duty.
09:27 Because it's two months of training of emergency procedures,
09:30 our own duties to the passengers,
09:33 the aircraft familiarization, and everything else.
09:36 So, it's two months in advance.
09:38 During that two months, my batch members
09:41 had to wait a year or even over a year
09:44 before they got a slot for training.
09:46 Where, in my case, I had to wait for one week
09:49 before I was accepted.
09:52 And I was already on board with them during the training.
09:54 So, I was just so lucky
09:57 to be able to complete it.
09:58 Because I didn't have to wait for a long time
10:01 before I could get training.
10:03 Unlike them, who had to wait over a year.
10:05 - Yes. - And then, the job offer expired.
10:08 The terms were different. The pay grade was different.
10:10 So, they had to go through the entire process again.
10:14 The medical, everything else.
10:15 But that's great.
10:16 What was your first flight assignment?
10:18 Was it domestic first, or international right away?
10:20 In our organization, my previous organization,
10:24 in that airline, there were two entities.
10:27 So, there's purely domestic flights,
10:29 which they fly the ATR, the propeller flights.
10:32 Suanga, Batanes, Mastate, those with small airports.
10:37 And then, my batch,
10:38 it was both international and domestic.
10:41 So, I was released for Airbus flights
10:43 and long-haul flights.
10:45 But my first flight wasn't international right away.
10:48 I flew, I remember, that was Viracat and Duanets.
10:51 ERC, I can't remember the airport.
10:53 But it was memorable because
10:55 I got to try the Guayabano Shake.
10:57 Is that right?
10:58 - Ah, nice! - That's the local drink.
11:01 So, you get to travel to the places you're going to.
11:05 Not every time, but I have allotted,
11:08 or like allotted schedules or flights
11:11 that if I don't reach the minimum crew rest,
11:13 so, you're supposed to be on duty
11:16 for 14 hours maximum, that's what you're mandated.
11:19 If your duty is going to go over that,
11:21 you're not allowed to stay there
11:22 and you'll stay in the place wherever you're going.
11:24 So, what was your longest flight
11:27 that you were assigned?
11:29 Actually, we don't fly America and Europe.
11:33 So, the longest flight I was assigned was to Dubai.
11:36 - Ah! - Which was around 9 to 10 hours.
11:39 - That's a long flight. - Yes.
11:40 You can't go back right after.
11:43 You have to stay there for over 24 hours
11:45 and then turn around on the flight
11:47 that's inbound to Dubai by the crew.
11:50 Then, you'll get on the plane and go back.
11:52 - Oh! - That's what they do.
11:54 - So, it's like a "Hatid Sundo". - Yes, yes.
11:57 But, I was on the flight for two years
12:00 and then the pandemic happened.
12:02 And the rest is history.
12:03 So, it was only during the pandemic
12:05 that you applied as an on-cam talent, as an actor?
12:09 Actually, yes.
12:09 In 2019, I started modeling for a local agency.
12:13 I had a taste of being a TV commercial model
12:17 for one project.
12:18 I was scouted by the same agency that I'm with now.
12:21 They didn't exclusively scout me in 2019
12:23 because they knew I was a flight attendant.
12:25 They just scouted me on social media
12:26 and one of the events I attended.
12:28 They told me to join a VTR, like the usual.
12:31 You'll be in a VTR and you'll get to know yourself.
12:34 So, I did that in person.
12:35 Then, I got a commercial.
12:38 That's why I was able to project for them.
12:40 But, the industry didn't follow up
12:41 because I had a day job, which was being a flight attendant.
12:45 But, until the pandemic happened,
12:47 I was part of the batch that was retrenched.
12:49 And then, they were the ones who got a lot of agency.
12:52 And then, why don't we try you in acting or modeling?
12:56 That's how I earned my income
12:59 generating a job during the pandemic.
13:02 That's the story of how I got into this industry.
13:03 Wow! I didn't know that.
13:05 I thought that by the time you started,
13:07 you've been hosting for a long time
13:10 or acting.
13:11 But, I didn't know that it was just...
13:13 So, at first, it was your first TV job?
13:16 When I signed with a modeling agency,
13:18 they gave me a modeling job
13:20 in two digital series, which I acted.
13:22 So, that's how I started.
13:25 I was able to do a workshop with them
13:28 but it wasn't enough for me to be an actor
13:32 for mainstream TV like now.
13:33 Then, the auditions for Jimmy arrived.
13:36 They opened the doors for Jimmy Arte Center.
13:38 It was in the year 2021, December.
13:42 I remember that.
13:43 And then, I did audition online.
13:44 It was fairly online.
13:45 They auditioned me.
13:47 We tried.
13:48 And then, it took months before they got back to me
13:52 and told me, "You got in.
13:55 Let's proceed with your contract."
13:57 Blah, blah, blah.
13:57 Before it got hot,
13:59 it was already mid-2022
14:03 when they had to hire fun liners.
14:07 - We call ourselves fun liners. - Yes, the fun liners.
14:09 We were supposed to be there in the first year, 2022,
14:13 in the summer of 2022
14:15 because they needed hosts for the summer segments.
14:19 - Yes. - They'll be on TV.
14:20 They couldn't hire current hosts.
14:23 So, they needed to hire us.
14:24 You would know, you would know, Estia.
14:27 You're good friends with them.
14:30 They're past that stage.

15:14 We're one of the first batch.
15:17 We're the same age, actually.
15:18 Syrah, Anzo, Jenzel, and the rest of the fun liners.
15:23 But some of us are 21, 20.
15:27 So we're different. We're still one of the mature ones.

15:34 Well, at least, when we're with them.
15:36 But when we're the same age,

15:48 - Because they'll hear it one way or another. - Yes, it'll reach them.
15:52 But yeah, I'd love to think it was colorful.
15:55 People actually tell me that.
15:57 And then, the sweet for you guys here,
15:59 that my transition was smooth,
16:01 even if it wasn't good at first,
16:03 that I was removed from being a flight attendant.
16:05 'Cause I thought, I was looking at five years
16:07 that was in my timeline of my life plan.
16:09 For five years, I could've left IFDIRC
16:13 and go international, maybe,
16:15 to International Airlines.
16:16 Just to share here, this is the first time I'm publicly sharing it.
16:19 That I actually applied to International Airlines.
16:21 And I even have an existing application with them.
16:23 I don't know if it's still existing,
16:25 well, to me, it is.
16:26 But I had to put it on hold.
16:29 'Cause I was just starting to do it.
16:33 So I said, "When will I ever get the chance
16:36 to be on TV and then be part of the longest
16:40 running morning show on Philippine television?
16:43 And be a host and be part of UH Maricada?"
16:47 And that application, I can take it.
16:50 Or like, well, at least to me, I'm being confident now.
16:54 I can take it at any time that I want.
16:56 If all else fails, I can go there and try my luck again.
17:01 But this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
17:04 We don't know how long I'll be there.

17:11 But you know, my mom is one of the most avid viewers of
17:15 not just Unang Hirit, actually, but GMA in general.
17:18 But Unang Hirit is part of her morning routine.
17:21 Just recently, actually, maybe two months ago,
17:24 we were talking and I was asking her,
17:26 "So what are you watching lately?"
17:29 I forgot what we were talking about.
17:31 Maybe some other...
17:32 - Like one of the teleseries. - Ghosts.
17:34 Yeah.
17:35 She said, "But you know, in Unang Hirit, I love the new hosts."
17:39 And then she said, "They're so cute together."
17:41 She was talking about you and Shira together.
17:43 She said, "You're so cute together."
17:45 And I think that is the sentiment of a lot.
17:47 Your tandem is so engaging.
17:51 It's fun to watch every morning.
17:54 Shira was one of the blessings that happened in 2022 for me, at least.
17:58 Because she wasn't the one who became my partner in Unang Hirit SPA.
18:02 It was Jenzel at first,
18:04 and then another Sparkle artist, which was Roxy Smith.
18:07 Last but not least, it was Shira.
18:08 It was a surprise.
18:09 My first impression, actually, with Shira,
18:11 and I told her this,
18:12 that I'm actually getting jealous of her.
18:14 And I told her that,
18:16 because I know Shira.
18:17 Shira has been in the industry for a while now.
18:19 And she's known for being a good actress,
18:22 being a great partner to E.K. Guzman,
18:24 and the leading lady of Ruro Madrid in Lolong.
18:28 So to be partnered with her,
18:29 it's a bit intimidating at first.
18:31 And how she looks.
18:32 I mean, Shira is beautiful.
18:35 But I have the impression that,
18:38 since she's been an artist for a long time,
18:40 maybe she has a look for new artists like me,
18:43 who don't have a name yet.
18:44 And no one will recognize me if it's not for Unang Hirit.

22:23 it didn't become a burden for me to be eager to be invited again to Hirit. Because it was fun!
22:30 It was fun when I did it in the segment because I was just bungee jumping there. I rappelled, I freepowded, I was a little scared because it was my first time doing it.
22:39 Because it's live, there's time pressure, and then everyone's watching you. So I did it even if I was nervous.
22:46 But right after that, I told my handler that "Hey, tell them that we're available again tomorrow. We're like the contestants. Please, please tell them."
