00:04 My mother and my sisters,
00:05 I grew up with some amazing role models in my life
00:08 that were very close to me.
00:09 I didn't have to look to like celebrities
00:11 for inspiration, I had my mother
00:13 who taught me my work ethic,
00:14 my sisters who probably made me funny.
00:16 But yeah, I love the women in my family.
00:19 That's who I look up to.
00:19 My sister Lisa, yeah, I have a sister with special needs.
00:24 She has a mental disability.
00:25 All the things that she's overcome in her life
00:27 to be where she is today,
00:29 you know, they said that she would never walk,
00:30 she would never talk, she would never laugh.
00:32 Today she's 55 and has a job and has five boyfriends
00:36 and has a very big social life.
00:39 Like, I think her life would be amazing to tell.
00:41 You know what, there's your sisterhood of your family,
00:43 which is my three sisters that I grew up with.
00:46 And then the sisterhood that you create with your friends
00:48 and your community.
00:49 And I think I have a really amazing sisterhood
00:52 with my friends, with my Latina community.
00:55 And I think it's important for us to lean on each other,
00:57 to lift each other up, to be there when we need something.
01:00 And also as resources.
01:02 I'll use my sisterhood as resources for anything,
01:04 you know, about raising my kid, new recipes,
01:07 workout tips, facial tips, you know, everything.
01:10 Everything in life, you should be able to lean on somebody
01:12 and ask these questions
01:13 and have somebody there to answer them.
01:15 Oh, I would tell her, you know, fasten your seatbelt.
01:18 Life's gonna be fun.
01:20 Ah, Wonder Woman.
01:21 I grew up with Linda Carter and Wonder Woman,
01:24 and I loved her.
01:25 I thought she was amazing and she was beautiful
01:27 and she was so powerful and she had the lasso of truth.
01:30 And yeah, so many things I've accomplished a lot.
01:33 Obviously, Desperate Housewives, all of my directing,
01:37 directing Flaming Hot.
01:38 You know, I really enjoy being behind the camera,
01:41 but I also love acting.
01:43 So I like mostly when I do all three.
01:45 Well, my master's is in Chicano Studies,
01:47 which is the history of Mexican-Americans
01:49 in the United States.
01:50 And so a lot of my work is centered around those stories.
01:52 You know, I produced a documentary about identity.
01:55 I directed Flaming Hot, which was about Richard Montanez
01:59 and his struggle to create one of the biggest snack brands
02:03 in the world.
02:04 So I really like producing with purpose
02:06 and my education and my Chicano Studies background
02:10 has really serviced a lot of that
02:12 and informed a lot of my filmmaking.
02:14 (upbeat music)
