00:00 - I wanted to ask you about VAR.
00:03 Sorry, I know you've been asked about this
00:04 a million times a season,
00:05 but there's talk that there's going to be a vote
00:07 for it to be scrapped.
00:08 Where do you stand on that?
00:09 - Oh.
00:10 (audience laughing)
00:10 - I mean, I know how you feel about VAR,
00:13 but would you, now presented with it.
00:16 - Is this your first press conference, Charlie?
00:18 (audience laughing)
00:19 - If presented with that vote,
00:20 would it just be, yeah, get rid?
00:22 - Yeah.
00:23 Yeah, look, like I've consistently said,
00:24 I'm not a fan of it.
00:26 And I don't think they will get rid of it
00:28 'cause we're too far down the track.
00:29 I just don't think it's serving a purpose that it should.
00:32 And I think they should bring it in
00:35 when the technology can match the expectations.
00:39 And I don't think it does at the moment.
00:40 So when they brought in goal line technology,
00:43 it was seamless.
00:44 It was like, you bring it in, it helps the game.
00:46 Nothing changes.
00:47 Yeah, they're talking about semi-automated offsides.
00:50 So if that is accurate and that's quick,
00:53 then by all means, use it because, you know,
00:56 it doesn't slow down the game.
00:57 It doesn't, you know, we get this ridiculous notion
01:00 of, you know, waiting for an hour
01:03 to look at some blurry images with some lines.
01:05 I mean, I think it's almost prehistoric
01:07 that we're going down that route and yet we accept it.
01:10 And then the rest of the game, we'll let the referee it.
01:13 And like I said, if the technology gets to a level
01:17 where, you know, we can introduce it
01:19 and it doesn't affect our game, then by all means.
01:21 But I don't know, I think there was just this real
01:25 clamour to bring it in at the time
01:27 because everyone kept saying, well, you know,
01:29 you'll never get the Maradona handball
01:32 and you'll never get, you know, whatever other decision.
01:35 But they were picking up isolated incidents that, you know,
01:40 there's a reason they stand out
01:41 because that didn't happen every week.
01:43 And now all of a sudden, every decision
01:46 is getting scrutinised where, as I said,
01:50 we don't celebrate goals anymore
01:51 or we celebrate them three times
01:53 or we're waiting to see whether it's something's offside,
01:57 linesmen aren't putting their flags up,
01:59 it's just changed the game materially.
02:00 So I would, I would scrap it,
02:01 not because I'm against it being sort of implemented,
02:05 but get the technology right,
02:08 prove that it works and run it with from there.
