00:05:21 Hi.
00:05:21 Hello.
00:05:24 Well, welcome to California.
00:05:27 You're Eileen, right?
00:05:29 Right.
00:05:29 My name is Kramer.
00:05:31 I, besides being your next door neighbor, I'm going to be your English lip teacher.
00:05:37 Oh, how nice.
00:05:38 Well, your family certainly have been looking forward to seeing you.
00:05:42 I felt the same way myself, having you in my class.
00:05:46 Well, I won't bother you anymore.
00:05:49 I'm just going to take a look around before dark.
00:05:51 Well, thank you for saying hello.
00:05:54 It's nice to know you. Bye.
00:05:55 Bye.

00:07:00 Does anybody here speak American English?
00:07:13 I can manage a few words.
00:07:22 It's all right. She's a friend.
00:07:24 She's the new station master's daughter.
00:07:26 Small town.
00:07:33 My name is David.
00:07:35 This is my father, Archiro Tayanika.
00:07:38 It's unusual, but...
00:07:44 Hi.
00:07:45 Welcome.
00:07:48 Well, Mr. Tayanika, I was walking through the fields on my way home, and I heard the music, and I just couldn't resist.
00:07:53 It's fine.
00:07:55 Stay.
00:07:57 Eat.
00:07:59 David.
00:08:00 Sure.
00:08:02 You're at the O'Ban, or the Festival of the Lantern, or the Feast of All Souls.
00:08:11 Take your pick.
00:08:12 All three names are correct.
00:08:14 It's just beautiful.
00:08:16 Ma, this is... I think your last name is Philip?
00:08:20 Eileen Philip.
00:08:21 I know your brother Harlan. He's a tough man on the basket.
00:08:24 Welcome.
00:08:25 Your father and mother have much pretty girls.
00:08:28 Oh, please have some.
00:08:30 No, Ma. She doesn't want any of that jive.
00:08:32 There's something inside you might like much better.
00:08:34 Oh, that's all right. I like Chinese food.
00:08:37 In here.
00:08:44 In here.
00:08:45 Shazam!
00:08:50 That's funny.
00:08:51 Oh, it's as funny as not knowing Chinese from Japanese.
00:08:53 I'm sorry.
00:08:55 Here. Eat.
00:08:57 Thank you.
00:08:58 You're welcome.
00:08:59 It's not too Japanesey. I'm lucky.
00:09:03 Dad always thought, "When in America, be American."
00:09:11 Mom, she kind of holds on to some of those old customs.
00:09:14 Don't tell me there's a poetry nut here, too.
00:09:20 Pardon?
00:09:21 That's what my brother calls me. A poetry nut.
00:09:23 Really? Well, so am I.
00:09:25 But I'm not sure I always understand it.
00:09:27 He does.
00:09:28 Come on.
00:09:40 That's my older cousin, Tadashi.
00:09:42 Here's something else you might like to see.
00:09:49 Want to swing?
00:10:10 It looks like fun, and I'd love to, but I've really got to go.
00:10:13 We'd like you to stay.
00:10:15 I appreciate it, but I must go.
00:10:18 If you have to, I'll drive you home, okay?
00:10:22 Well...
00:10:24 Okay.
00:10:26 Okay.
00:10:28 How about this one?
00:10:39 "To one who has been long in a city pent,
00:10:41 "it is very sweet to look into the fair and open face of heaven,
00:10:45 "to breathe a prayer full in the smile of the blue firmament."
00:10:48 John.
00:10:51 You're very good.
00:10:54 Uh...
00:10:56 That was my road.
00:10:59 Your turn.
00:11:03 Your turn.
00:11:04 "The world is too much with us, late and soon.
00:11:15 "Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers.
00:11:20 "Little we see in nature that is ours."
00:11:23 Shakespeare?
00:11:25 Wordsworth.
00:11:27 Oh, I always get those two confused.
00:11:30 Hey, it's really great to know someone who likes poetry.
00:11:33 My folks don't understand it at all.
00:11:35 Mine neither.
00:11:37 You're about to have one of my...
00:11:44 You're about to have one of my...
00:11:46 (tires screeching)
00:12:14 - You like it? - Yeah, I love it!
00:12:16 (laughing)
00:12:32 (laughing)
00:12:34 What else do you like, David?
00:12:46 I like Bob Hope,
00:12:50 Crosby songs,
00:12:52 basketball, Hemingway, Colliers,
00:12:55 Ronald Lloyd.
00:12:57 What else?
00:13:00 What else?
00:13:01 You're very pretty, Eileen.
00:13:05 Nice of you to say so.
00:13:10 David, I really have to go home.
00:13:16 I'd like to see you again, Eileen.
00:13:19 What?
00:13:21 You don't have to.
00:13:23 I want to.
00:13:24 We can...
00:13:27 We can go to a drive-in movie
00:13:29 Friday night?
00:13:30 I don't know.
00:13:33 Saturday night?
00:13:35 It's not that, it's just that...
00:13:39 You're right.
00:13:43 Absolutely right.
00:13:45 Oh, David, I didn't mean it that way.
00:13:49 I just meant that...
00:13:52 I'm scared.
00:13:56 (somber music)
00:13:58 (screaming)
00:14:09 I didn't think you were coming.
00:14:19 I almost didn't.
00:14:20 I told my folks I was going roller skating.
00:14:24 I told my folks I was going to a recital with Miss Kramer.
00:14:27 It's lovely.
00:14:39 You're simply beautiful.
00:14:43 But...
00:14:48 You're simply beautiful, but...
00:14:53 Four weeks.
00:14:54 Four weeks of empty beaches and dark corners.
00:14:57 There's a cave over here!
00:15:06 Girl, they wish us to be kept in secret before we find a cave?
00:15:13 Japanese proverb?
00:15:14 Arminian.
00:15:16 (screaming)
00:15:21 (laughing)
00:15:22 (screaming)
00:15:27 How's the recharging?
00:15:35 I love charging.
00:15:36 What else do you love, Eileen?
00:15:39 Oh, I love beach caves.
00:15:42 Security blankets, putting pennies on railroad tracks, daffodils.
00:15:49 Butterflies, cold hot dogs, and...
00:15:51 And an angle-eyed Japanese-American boy named David...
00:15:55 I don't know anything about you.
00:15:58 Do Japanese gentlemen have middle names?
00:16:01 Thomas.
00:16:04 David Thomas Tayunika.
00:16:06 Well, David Thomas Tayunika, I love you.
00:16:11 (somber music)
00:16:15 (train whistle blowing)
00:16:17 You're an honor student, an all-conference basketball guard, an Eagle Scout?
00:16:24 Why would you be interested in me? I'm nothing but a nobody.
00:16:28 You're beautiful, smart, something.
00:16:31 Why would you love me?
00:16:33 Nothing but a chap.
00:16:35 Oh, baloney.
00:16:36 I do love you, Eileen.
00:16:40 What's wrong?
00:16:44 And it's right.
00:16:45 Two candles?
00:17:01 Two months.
00:17:03 Happy anniversary.
00:17:05 We even got our own private harbor.
00:17:08 Doesn't everybody?
00:17:10 I've never known anyone like you, Eileen.
00:17:11 White, yellow, purple, little chartreuse.
00:17:13 And you're never again gonna know anybody like me.
00:17:16 Eileen.
00:17:18 Tayunika.
00:17:20 Eileen Tayunika.
00:17:23 Do you really believe it?
00:17:27 Eileen Tayunika.
00:17:29 Do you believe in David Tayunika?
00:17:32 Eileen Tayunika.
00:17:37 I believe it.
00:17:38 Then it's settled.
00:17:40 We're getting married.
00:17:42 They won't let us, our families.
00:17:44 I know, but we're going to do it.
00:17:46 When?
00:17:48 On a Sunday. That's when everybody gets married.
00:17:49 How?
00:17:51 Leave it to me. I know a man.
00:17:52 What? You can't get married by just any old man.
00:17:55 You can by this man.
00:17:57 But we need a witness.
00:17:58 Miss Kramer.
00:18:00 We're really going to do it.
00:18:06 No more dark corners.
00:18:07 I love you.
00:18:09 Different colored flowers grow side by side.
00:18:17 You make fine garden.
00:18:19 Armenian proverb?
00:18:21 Japanese.
00:18:24 My father.
00:18:26 Still feel the same, honey?
00:18:31 Why don't you just take it easy now?
00:18:34 Rest is the best thing for a headache.
00:18:35 Go to the sun.
00:18:37 If it's not gone by the time we get back,
00:18:39 we'll have the doctor in.
00:18:41 I'm sorry I'm not going with you.
00:18:43 So are we. Bye-bye, Anna.
00:18:45 Don't fret about that.
00:18:47 Think of me.
00:18:49 What?
00:18:51 In church, say a little prayer for me.
00:18:53 You feel that badly?
00:18:55 No, but I'm sure it'll help.
00:18:57 Bye, Anna.
00:18:59 Stay warm, dear.
00:19:02 [footsteps]
00:19:03 [door slams]
00:19:05 David, I just don't know.
00:19:25 I've known your father for so many years.
00:19:28 It's not right to do this to him.
00:19:30 But what about her parents?
00:19:31 Father, once it's done, they'll accept it.
00:19:34 You're so young.
00:19:36 You're just children.
00:19:38 Father, there's no age limit on being in love.
00:19:40 I know what I feel.
00:19:42 Maybe.
00:19:44 And maybe not.
00:19:46 [birds chirping]
00:19:49 [water dripping]
00:19:50 You still want me?
00:20:03 Yes. I want you.
00:20:05 Father, this is Eileen Helen Phillips.
00:20:09 Hello, Eileen.
00:20:11 Hello, Father.
00:20:13 He won't say yes. He won't say no.
00:20:15 You work on him.
00:20:17 Eileen,
00:20:18 this is a very important decision.
00:20:21 I want to be his wife.
00:20:23 It's especially difficult
00:20:25 when you have the burden of other people's prejudice.
00:20:28 And have it you will.
00:20:30 I know.
00:20:32 I'm not sure that you do.
00:20:34 If you're willing to enter into marriage,
00:20:36 your eyes wide open,
00:20:38 knowing that it's going to be extremely difficult.
00:20:40 There'll be happiness too, Father.
00:20:42 Enough for me, no matter how difficult it gets.
00:20:45 If I refuse to marry you, what then?
00:20:47 I guess we'll just have to be married in the eyes of God.
00:20:50 You mean that?
00:20:52 I don't want to live without him, Father.
00:20:54 I know only too well that it's right for both of us.
00:20:57 How can you be so sure?
00:20:59 There comes one moment once,
00:21:04 and God help those who pass that moment by,
00:21:07 when beauty stands looking into the soul
00:21:11 with grave sweet eyes.
00:21:14 Yes.
00:21:15 Her stand.
00:21:18 Yes.
00:21:19 Her stand.

00:22:11 Nervous?
00:22:13 Yeah.
00:22:14 They think I'm homesick.
00:22:16 Then they find out I'm married.
00:22:18 [Music]
00:22:20 Folks!
00:22:25 Hey, folks!
00:22:26 Before you hear anything else,
00:22:28 I want you to know we've got everything taken care of.
00:22:32 The Japs have bombed Pearl Harbor.
00:22:34 What?
00:22:38 Pearl Harbor.
00:22:40 That's in Hawaii.
00:22:42 Say, you people, you just go on home now
00:22:45 and turn on your radios and don't get excited.
00:22:48 If we need any of you, we'll holler for you.
00:22:51 [Indistinct chatter]

00:23:23 [Sound of wind]
00:23:27 [Sound of water]
00:23:30 [Sound of car driving away]
00:23:31 This is not another Orson Welles radio play.
00:23:49 This is the tragic and real thing.
00:23:51 The Japanese have bombed Pearl Harbor.
00:23:53 The Japanese have bombed Pearl Harbor.
00:23:56 A few short hours ago, without warning,
00:23:59 the Japanese launched an unprovoked attack
00:24:01 on U.S. ships in the Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Hawaii,
00:24:04 and simultaneously attacked strategic points
00:24:07 in the Philippines and the island of Guam.
00:24:09 Japanese planes also bombed targets in Singapore and Hong Kong.
00:24:13 Japanese troops also landed in Malaya
00:24:15 and crossed into Thailand from Indochina.
00:24:18 And all of this while the Japanese envoys were in Washington
00:24:22 assuring our government of their government's wish for peace.
00:24:25 Now the question that is being asked is,
00:24:28 how much of the destruction that occurred in Pearl Harbor
00:24:30 was the result of sabotage?
00:24:33 Until an investigation has been made, of course,
00:24:35 one can only speculate.
00:24:37 And while the Japanese attack was a complete surprise,
00:24:40 it did come at the end of a series of events
00:24:42 that have continued to increase the strain and tension
00:24:45 in Japanese relations with the United States and Great Britain.
00:24:48 Here's another bulletin just handed to me.
00:24:50 Russian armies have broken through the German line
00:24:53 on the Moscow front at two points
00:24:56 and destroyed two German divisions.
00:24:58 Now back to the background of the Japanese attack on Hong Kong.
00:25:01 Made in China, Dad. No problem, right?
00:25:03 No. No, not a chance. Let's go. Let's go.
00:25:09 Miss Kramer?
00:25:20 Eileen?
00:25:24 The whole town's gone mad.
00:25:26 Eileen?
00:25:29 Did they know about you and David?
00:25:31 No.
00:25:33 We couldn't tell them. They've got enough problems.
00:25:36 I'm so sorry.
00:25:38 I'm so sorry.
00:25:40 Miss Kramer.
00:26:01 Hello. Come in. Come in.
00:26:05 My name is Mr. and Miss Kramer and our open visitor Eileen Phillips.
00:26:09 Mr. and Mrs. Tayanaga,
00:26:15 a number of us have been going to all the Japanese families
00:26:20 and telling them that we're sorry,
00:26:24 we're concerned, and we'll help in any way.
00:26:30 I know you.
00:26:31 There's a good man in there.
00:26:34 Thank you. Thank you.
00:26:37 Hi, Dad.
00:26:39 The radio says we Californians have been building an army and are ready to rise.
00:26:43 Yes, and they're saying we've sprayed the truck producer with arsenic in the last two days
00:26:48 and put ground glass in the raw fish that has been delivered to the market.
00:26:52 But are they going to remember that there are 78,000 Japanese Americans
00:26:56 who have never seen Japan?
00:26:59 Will they remember how many Japanese fought in World War I?
00:27:03 Take a look in your father's closet. He still has the uniform and the medal.
00:27:10 We don't know what to expect.
00:27:18 So we stay together and we pray.
00:27:23 Thank you for coming.
00:27:28 Oh, not at all.
00:27:31 I'll see you out.
00:27:33 David?
00:27:42 Not now.
00:27:45 I'll meet you at the Arbor, about eight.
00:27:50 I'll be there.
00:27:52 I'll always be there.
00:27:57 And we thank you for the food on our table.
00:27:59 We ask that you help keep our family together.
00:28:02 And God bless our country, America.
00:28:05 Amen.
00:28:08 Now, there's no need for this. No need.
00:28:18 Folks, this is a very sorry way to meet somebody. I know that.
00:28:22 But this here's Mr. Coslow. He's with the government.
00:28:25 This may not seem right to you, but there's a war on.
00:28:27 Folks, I got a list here.
00:28:30 Got some things on it we're supposed to pick up.
00:28:34 That is, if you folks have any of this.
00:28:37 If you don't mind, I'm going to look around a little bit.
00:28:40 Sheriff.
00:29:07 Sheriff, will you come in here a minute?
00:29:10 What about this?
00:29:14 Now, that's under eight inches, isn't it?
00:29:20 Well, yeah.
00:29:22 All right. Says right here it's okay, then.
00:29:35 Morse code book.
00:29:37 He was the boy, Scott. That's his handbook.
00:29:40 It's on the list, isn't it?
00:29:42 It's on the list.
00:29:44 Well, all right, then.
00:29:46 Oh, boy.
00:29:48 Oh, my. I'm sorry, folks.
00:30:00 Golly.
00:30:02 Oh, fuck.
00:30:03 We don't expect any type of light movement from this farm.
00:30:08 So do all the things you need vision for in the daylight.
00:30:11 Hey, can they speak English?
00:30:16 Of course they can speak English. Now, is that what you want?
00:30:19 Good. Then they understand.
00:30:21 Well, is that it?
00:30:23 Yeah, that's it.
00:30:25 Okay, then let's get going.
00:30:28 All right.
00:30:29 You folks be careful now.
00:30:39 Hey, Sheriff.
00:30:54 Look at this clothesline. Good thing I noticed.
00:30:57 This could be used as a shortwave antenna.
00:31:00 Oh, they found the right man for the job. That's for sure.
00:31:04 David! Yo, David!
00:31:12 Oh, well, you're off to...
00:31:22 David, son, you can't go anyplace.
00:31:25 What?
00:31:27 Not this time of night. Japanese can't be out after 6 o'clock. That's a brand new law.
00:31:32 But...
00:31:35 David, son, anybody that breaks the curfew has to go to jail.
00:31:41 I'm sorry, but that's the way it is.

00:31:54 [Music]
00:32:21 [Music]
00:32:24 David!
00:32:50 Eileen!
00:32:51 I guess Pearl Harbor lets them spell that out on paper.
00:32:57 I've been so worried about you.
00:33:03 So many things have happened.
00:33:05 You haven't been in school for two days.
00:33:07 What for?
00:33:09 David, we have to talk.
00:33:11 I know.
00:33:13 What are we going to do?
00:33:17 Not about the war, this town. About us.
00:33:20 David, I'm your wife.
00:33:22 My truck's behind the 5 and 10. Meet me there.
00:33:30 If things don't work out, I can always get a shave.
00:33:36 And they don't want me to go out at night.
00:33:44 We're not allowed to go out.
00:33:46 I know.
00:33:47 How is it with your mom and dad?
00:33:49 Same. Worse, actually.
00:33:52 I know I told you they might let us stay with them, but now that's off.
00:33:56 The way Dad's been treated, he wouldn't trust anybody. Not even you.
00:33:59 I don't blame them.
00:34:01 My folks are worse than ever. They're just terrible.
00:34:04 Why should they be different from the rest of us?
00:34:06 Oh, David, what are we going to do?
00:34:09 I don't know.
00:34:15 All I can say is that I love you.
00:34:16 You're my wife.
00:34:18 You're not sorry for that?
00:34:20 I never will be.
00:34:23 Me neither, David.
00:34:25 Me neither.
00:34:27 No matter what.
00:34:29 These Japs are a depraved breed who can't be dealt with like mischievous boys at a Sunday school picnic.
00:34:42 We should wake up to the fact that protection of Americans is more important than what happens to the Jap brutes.
00:34:47 They live like rats, breed like rats, and act like rats.
00:34:52 One more thing.
00:34:54 You can't make an American out of a little Jap junior by handing him an American birth certificate.
00:34:59 What was that for?
00:35:03 I can't hear it anymore. I can't read it anymore.
00:35:06 What is it, Angel? What's the matter?
00:35:09 There's just no logic.
00:35:11 Logic?
00:35:12 Well, you don't want them living near the military bases, now do you?
00:35:17 They lived there before military bases.
00:35:20 And they bought land under the power line.
00:35:23 Because no white farmer would buy that land.
00:35:26 For just chance that they all live near the coast.
00:35:29 Most of us who live in California live near the coast.
00:35:33 Look, I don't want to discuss it with you, Eileen. You're too young to understand.
00:35:39 I've never seen you so hateful.
00:35:41 And violent, so terrible.
00:35:43 Well, there's certainly no need for you to get so upset about this.
00:35:46 Daddy, they're people, just like us.
00:35:49 No, no, no, sweetheart. They are nothing like us.
00:35:52 That's just the point. They're nothing like us at all.
00:35:56 I can't even talk to you about this.
00:36:01 Eileen, will you listen?
00:36:03 Helen, wait a minute.
00:36:05 You're wrong, young lady. Absolutely wrong.
00:36:08 Because they are the enemy.
00:36:09 And you don't give hearts and flowers and love and kisses to people who would kill you.
00:36:14 Without batting an eye.
00:36:17 Daddy, try to understand. Please try.
00:36:23 There's only one thing that I understand, and that is that no speaking jack is worth busting us apart.
00:36:30 [Music]
00:36:56 About a hundred, you say?
00:36:58 [Music]
00:37:01 Well, at least you and your mom are still alive.
00:37:06 Cheeks of man's soul.
00:37:09 Can't seem to help no one.
00:37:12 Up around Santa Cruz, there's a asparagus field got tromped on, chopped up, wiped out.
00:37:19 Yet the sheriff up there says, "Gotta, gotta be at least 50 people to do that kind of damage in one night."
00:37:27 Down at Brawley, shots get thrown into some homes.
00:37:32 That's crazy. Oh, that's crazy. That's just crazy.
00:37:38 Well, bite the bullet, son.
00:37:42 My old daddy used to say, "Hammers break glass and make steel."
00:37:52 [Music]
00:37:57 Let's get 'em.
00:37:59 Hey! Get 'em out of here.
00:38:02 Get 'em out of here.
00:38:04 40 years we've been telling you to get out of the country.
00:38:08 You ever heard of Jack Bond's boys?
00:38:11 You're a bunch of yellow bellies, you two.
00:38:14 Jack Bond's boy was on a ship beside the Pearl Harbor. He's still there.
00:38:21 You still hear that? Remember Pearl Harbor!
00:38:24 [Bell ringing]
00:38:27 Get 'em out of here.
00:38:29 Bunch 'em up! Drive 'em out!
00:38:32 Get out of town, Jack!
00:38:34 [Indistinct chatter]
00:38:38 Jack Bond's paying grand his family's debt!
00:38:44 [Music]
00:39:11 Yes, we'll be all right. That's pretty bruised up. At least we got a house. Today.
00:39:16 With my father.
00:39:18 David was my father, one of them. Please.
00:39:23 Yes, but he wasn't a leader. He... he wasn't a leader.
00:39:28 [Music]
00:39:34 [Footsteps]
00:39:59 Hey, Har! Hey, Har. You're not gonna believe what I just saw.
00:40:03 What?
00:40:05 Your sister with, uh, I don't know, a Japanese David.
00:40:08 Where?
00:40:10 In the wash.
00:40:12 Right over there.
00:40:14 [Footsteps]
00:40:23 I never realized how anyone could be put through such agony.
00:40:27 Don't worry. My folks can take it.
00:40:29 Oh, I'm sure they can. I just don't know about me.
00:40:34 I know, honey.
00:40:36 No, you don't.
00:40:38 I'm a married woman. I want to feel like one.
00:40:41 I want to be with you. Sleep with you. Feel you holding me.
00:40:46 It'll be all right. God knows this can't last forever.
00:40:50 I know.
00:40:52 But neither can we, David.
00:40:56 [Footsteps]
00:41:04 I don't see him anywhere.
00:41:06 Don't believe me.
00:41:08 Yeah, well, they could have gone through the fields back to town. Let's go.
00:41:12 [Footsteps]
00:41:26 Hey, you seen a Jap named Taya Nika?
00:41:29 Oh, wife of Count, wife of Count Anglici.
00:41:32 [Speaking Japanese]
00:41:38 You see a Jap, a Jap about this high? See Jap?
00:41:42 All right, all right.
00:41:54 [Birds chirping]
00:42:03 Bye now, buddy.
00:42:05 Goodbye, Jap.
00:42:07 [Helicopter]
00:42:23 Hey, where's your cousin?
00:42:24 Why?
00:42:26 You don't want to end up like them poor woolies. You better speak up.
00:42:29 I got my own troubles.
00:42:31 I hear he was messing around with my sister.
00:42:33 What's the matter? Afraid you're going to have Japanese relatives?
00:42:36 I drowned them first.
00:42:38 You better get a big sack first.
00:42:41 You Okies have big litters.
00:42:43 I'm going to shove your yellow teeth to the bottom of your yellow belly.
00:42:48 Come on, get me, Okie.
00:42:50 [Grunts]
00:42:52 You know Kendo Okie?
00:42:53 Jap!
00:42:56 You don't swing from the side, you come over the top.
00:42:59 Learned a lot? Secret Jap army.
00:43:07 Jap!
00:43:11 [Grunts]
00:43:13 [Speaking Japanese]
00:43:17 That's all right, Dave. The Oklahoma kids are going to show the Japs their place.
00:43:21 God, stop it!
00:43:22 You're next, Jap.
00:43:24 [Grunts]
00:43:27 I have to tell you something, both of you.
00:43:49 Holy God.
00:43:50 Holy God, holy God.
00:43:53 Hey, Tiger.
00:43:55 Let's slaughter her.
00:43:57 Come on!
00:43:59 Wait! Wait! Wait!
00:44:12 I can't go.
00:44:14 I killed a guy.
00:44:16 I got to talk to somebody.
00:44:18 I didn't get caught swiping watermelons. I killed a guy.
00:44:21 Yeah, yeah, I got to see the sheriff.
00:44:35 You guys go to the depot. Get down.
00:44:38 [Grunts]
00:44:41 Stop it!
00:44:43 Stop it!
00:44:47 You just stayed away from my sister. This never would have happened.
00:44:50 You hear me?
00:44:53 It's your fault!
00:44:55 It's your fault!
00:45:16 [Grunts]

00:46:02 What is it, Miss Graver?
00:46:04 Something...
00:46:07 Something terrible has happened to your brother.
00:46:11 Violent?
00:46:13 There was a fight.
00:46:15 It's an accident. A terrible accident.
00:46:18 Well, where is he?
00:46:20 I mean...
00:46:21 Harlan's dead.
00:46:26 Dave...
00:46:30 killed him.

00:47:16 What can I say?
00:47:17 I know.
00:47:19 It was an accident.
00:47:21 It was an accident, Eileen.
00:47:25 If you can live with it...
00:47:27 Now I must give myself up.

00:47:33 Mr. Tayanika?
00:47:41 You're under arrest.
00:47:43 You're to come with me.
00:47:46 Come on.
00:47:47 Where are we going, please?
00:47:49 Come on, let's go. Get in the truck.
00:47:51 Here, here you go.
00:47:58 Put on this tag.
00:48:01 You put it in a buttonhole.
00:48:03 Well, B-286-117...
00:48:13 You're being moved into a world of red tape, regulations, and long lines.
00:48:16 I'm sorry, sir. You...
00:48:22 Get on the truck, will you?
00:48:24 Okay, let's go.
00:48:38 [Engine starts]
00:48:40 [Engine revs]
00:48:42 [Engine stops]
00:48:43 Morning, Frank.
00:49:11 Sheriff, you're up at night and bright and early.
00:49:12 Oh, another roundup, Frank.
00:49:14 I figured we'd try to get it done before everybody was moving around.
00:49:17 Well, what'd they do this time?
00:49:19 Seems like they gave some money to an outfit called the Black Dragon Society.
00:49:24 I guess it's not a society a fellow wants to be in anyway mixed up with.
00:49:28 [Engine starts]
00:49:29 -Ruffalo, I think you'd better set up a guard. -Yes, sir.
00:49:49 Sheriff, would you like to check your list against mine, sir?
00:49:57 Oh, all right, Lieutenant. Let's see what we have.
00:49:59 Mr. Sheriff!
00:50:01 You listen.
00:50:03 My son vote for you.
00:50:05 I give money for fight Russia.
00:50:08 Russia, not United States of America.
00:50:11 We loyal.
00:50:13 We all loyal to America.
00:50:15 [Singing]
00:50:20 God bless America, land that I love.
00:50:24 Stand beside her and guide her
00:50:30 through the night with the light of love.
00:50:34 From the mountains to the prairies
00:50:38 to the ocean, white with foam.
00:50:43 God bless America.
00:50:48 Shut up!
00:50:49 Shut up!
00:50:51 But...
00:50:55 My son was murdered.
00:50:57 And this killer's in there, Jack.
00:50:59 You tell me not to start anything.
00:51:02 Oh, I'm sorry, ma'am. I'm sorry. I can't let you see nobody.
00:51:07 Husband! Husband!
00:51:09 -Ma'am, I'm sorry. I've got my order. -Just close. Close!
00:51:12 -Please, I have my order. -I said close! Forever!
00:51:14 Please, Senator.
00:51:17 Can I please?
00:51:18 -Close. Husband! -Yes, I understand.
00:51:23 We can't be completely in the middle of a call.
00:51:31 [Speaking in Russian]
00:51:41 English! English!
00:51:44 English!
00:51:45 Maybe this man not say goodbye to families.
00:51:51 -You say goodbye. -I...
00:51:54 [Speaking in Russian]
00:51:56 I...
00:51:58 [Speaking in Russian]
00:52:00 My heart goes with him.
00:52:02 [Speaking in Russian]
00:52:07 [Speaking in Russian]
00:52:10 [Speaking in Russian]
00:52:11 Well, Ted, it looks to me like you have the whole lot.

00:52:57 [Indistinct chatter]
00:52:59 I have studied the facts and re-studied the transcribed testimony.
00:53:09 This tragedy is clearly accidental in self-defense and to all involved, I am sure, heart-breaking.
00:53:18 Those close to the deceased will not find revenge in my decision.
00:53:25 They must take solace in the unfortunate truth and seek whatever forgiveness can be found in their hearts.
00:53:34 This court finds the defendant, David Tyaneka, not guilty.
00:53:41 [Music]
00:53:49 Adjourned.
00:53:52 [Music]
00:53:59 David, I hate like the devil to rub this in, but I strongly feel it will be best for you to get out of this neck of the woods.
00:54:12 I know all the words, David. Jigaboo, slant-eyed, big, dago, polack.
00:54:20 And I have never yet been able to figure out who's better than who.
00:54:26 So, I am not against you people.
00:54:29 Sure, all my life I've been an American. I don't want to become a "you" people.
00:54:33 Young fella, you are what people think you are today.
00:54:41 So, I don't know who it is, but there is somebody in this town that's going to take it into his head that he'll be helping the war effort by killing you.
00:54:48 Could be Holland's old man or want to take a little crack at your hide.
00:54:53 Point is, I just don't have enough help to watch out for you.
00:54:57 I hate like the devil to stick you back in the hoose, Carl, just to protect you.
00:55:01 American customs is just to lock up the man who commits a violence, not the victim.
00:55:07 David, boy, please don't jostle me.
00:55:12 What do you think is going to happen to us, Sheriff?
00:55:15 I don't know, David. I don't know. I only know there ain't one politician that's sticking up for you folks.
00:55:23 Seems like your cause is not so dandy this election year.
00:55:27 From what I understand, if the Japanese would pick up and go inside the state, why, they wouldn't have to move anymore.
00:55:35 But here, right here, sitting beside the ocean line, looks like so long day is going to be sooner than later.
00:55:41 And you got to get going right now, boy. I mean sooner than sooner.
00:55:45 How about Bakersfield? Do you know anybody around there?
00:55:49 Yeah, my father.
00:55:53 Come in, David. Come in.
00:56:17 You shouldn't be out after curfew. It's dangerous.
00:56:23 I know, but... I know.
00:56:26 I understand.
00:56:29 I've been so lonely lately. Why don't I call Eileen, ask her to spend the night with me. Keep me company.
00:56:38 Miss Kramer, I love you.
00:56:43 I love you too.
00:57:12 I'm sorry.
00:57:19 Eileen!
00:57:33 It's your father.
00:57:38 David, let's tell him.
00:57:43 I'm no longer a Japanese man to his daughter. Now I'm the killer.
00:57:54 What's the matter, Daddy?
00:57:56 Keep your voice down, Angel. I don't want to wake Miss Kramer.
00:58:00 Okay.
00:58:04 David, please.
00:58:07 Angel? Eileen?
00:58:13 Daddy, I have to talk to you. It's very important.
00:58:16 We have to hurry, honey.
00:58:18 Tell me on the way to the depot. I want you to drop me. Mother needs the car today.
00:58:22 Daddy, I...
00:58:24 Will you hurry up, Angel? Please. I have to meet the 620.
00:58:34 Oh, honey, we've never been so close.
00:58:37 Eileen, two things you learn from the Japanese.
00:58:45 Self-discipline.
00:58:50 And patience.
00:58:53 We haven't talked about anything.
00:58:56 And we've talked about everything.
00:59:02 I'm sorry.
00:59:04 Mom is worried about Dad. She thinks he needs more medicine.
00:59:09 I'll try to see him.
00:59:12 Then I'll stop by Bakersfield to see about a job.
00:59:16 Maybe there's an answer.
00:59:19 I'll be back.
00:59:22 Two days, two weeks.
00:59:26 I'll be back.
00:59:31 It was a beautiful night.
00:59:35 The End
00:59:39 The End
00:59:42 The End
00:59:45 The End
00:59:48 The End
00:59:51 The End
00:59:54 The End
01:00:20 No, no. The electric fan.
01:00:23 It shouldn't be here.
01:00:26 I thought you were dead.
01:00:29 Do you need anything else?
01:00:39 No, nothing.
01:00:42 Mom will be happy. You look fine.
01:00:48 You look fine.
01:00:50 Is it true that there are Japanese Americans here?
01:00:58 They keep saying, "I am American."
01:01:04 I say, "You American?"
01:01:08 She walks on the streets.
01:01:12 So I walk on the ocean.
01:01:17 I walk on the ocean.
01:01:19 I don't know what future holds.
01:01:22 You go now. Don't come back.
01:01:27 I never kissed my dad enough.
01:01:38 Now I know.
01:01:42 The End
01:01:46 The End
01:01:50 The End
01:01:53 The End
01:01:57 The End
01:02:00 The End
01:02:28 Mrs. Kayanika?
01:02:30 Since David couldn't be here, I made you something for Mother's Day.
01:02:37 Relocation.
01:02:48 To all those who are Japanese,
01:02:51 or of Japanese ancestry.
01:02:55 My life, my home, my Hachiro and me.
01:03:00 We made it since years back.
01:03:03 First, my man.
01:03:08 Who will tell us next what?
01:03:12 I... I'm so afraid.
01:03:24 Are you serious?
01:03:25 Dad, Hitler did the same thing to the Jews.
01:03:29 Many of these Japanese want to go to those camps to prove their loyalty.
01:03:34 That makes sense to me.
01:03:36 You're wrong, my daughter.
01:03:39 A Japanese is a Japanese.
01:03:42 I was reading in the paper.
01:03:45 General... Yes, here it is. General DeWitt.
01:03:49 He knows more about this than you or I.
01:03:53 He says that the Japanese race is an enemy race.
01:03:56 Many second and third generation Japanese born on this soil
01:04:02 possess U.S. citizenship, but... and get this.
01:04:05 The racial strains are undiluted.
01:04:10 That's very interesting.
01:04:14 It's interesting and by God, it's the truth.
01:04:20 Suppose the strains were diluted. Would that make a difference?
01:04:24 I mean, for instance,
01:04:27 what if Harlan had married a Japanese-American girl?
01:04:31 Not Japanese, a Jap.
01:04:33 There's no other way to say it. A Jap.
01:04:36 All right, a Jap.
01:04:39 What would it do?
01:04:41 It would kill your mother.
01:04:43 Kill me.
01:04:45 And you don't know it now, but it would kill you too.
01:04:49 Talk about the children that might come out of such a marriage.
01:04:51 It would be a living hell.
01:04:53 And as far as Harlan's concerned, he's better off where he is right now.
01:04:57 Dead.
01:04:59 And married to a Jap.

01:06:44 I gotta get back to Santa Marta.
01:06:46 Going there, sir?
01:06:48 Si.
01:06:50 Yes, Dos Truces. Get in.
01:06:54 [Car engine]
01:07:04 You what?
01:07:06 It's best, I believe.
01:07:08 It is not the best.
01:07:10 I agreed to drive you to Bakersfield to help find David.
01:07:13 I did not agree to be an accomplice to a crazy, fake drowning.
01:07:17 I tried to tell Miss Kramer what I was doing, but she wasn't home.
01:07:22 Eileen, you simply can't do this.
01:07:24 I don't want to.
01:07:26 But it's the only way.
01:07:28 My father would rather see me dead than married to David.
01:07:30 After they've lived with my death, they'll be so happy to see me alive that they'll accept my marriage.
01:07:35 Even accept my living in a relocation camp with my husband.
01:07:38 The scheme of yours is absolutely insane.
01:07:42 As soon as we get to Bakersfield, I'm going to tell David everything you said.
01:07:46 And we're going to get this whole business straightened out.
01:07:51 [Car engine]
01:08:16 If we can get to them, it was before I get my evacuation notice.
01:08:20 No one can touch us.
01:08:21 We'll start a new life.
01:08:23 Without any pressure from the government or her parents or my relatives.
01:08:26 Miss Kramer, what is it?
01:08:28 David, you haven't heard.
01:08:30 No, of course you haven't.
01:08:33 This morning, Eileen committed...
01:08:39 Eileen!
