What do Newarkers think about immigration?

In its weekly voxpop, the Advertiser found out people’s opinions on immigration.

00:13 We didn't have immigrants then.

00:16 And I think if they didn't spend so much money on immigrants,

00:20 they'd be able to look after the people who are working.

00:24 Because we've got an awful lot of them.

00:27 I don't agree with immigration at all.

00:29 I totally agree with Robert Jenrick's message.

00:32 We do have too many immigrants that come in and don't

00:34 contribute enough to the country.

00:39 We agree that it seriously needs looking at.

00:49 And they need to sort it out, personally speaking.

00:54 They're quite a drain on the resources of the country

00:57 and how much we have to pay for illegal immigrants,

01:02 putting them up, and everything to do with that.

01:07 There's a lot of immigration.

01:09 And there's not enough work for our people, is there?

01:12 That's the old trouble.

01:15 I agree with it in a way.

01:18 But we should still reduce immigration.

01:20 Not necessarily.

01:25 I think immigration's fine as long as it's controlled

01:29 and we're letting in the people who we need.

01:33 I have to say that I don't agree with the message on the video.

01:35 Because a lot of these jobs that he was referencing,

01:38 they have a need and they need to be filled.

01:41 So immigrants do tend to do these jobs.

01:44 And as an immigrant myself, I'm very, very proud of the fact

01:49 that this country's welcomed me.

01:51 And I'm really grateful as well.

01:54 So in short, I think Jenrick's seen the writing on the wall.

01:59 There is an election coming up.

02:00 He was aware of this when he resigned from the position.

02:04 And I think it's just a strategic move on his part.
